Randomly Speaking But Officer..

nytime you mix hot cars with posted speed limits, there will always be the long arm of the law to slow you down. Usually it’s in the form of a speeding ticket. We’ve all gotten those, even in our daily grocery getters. Actually I haven’t gotten a speeding ticket in a “Hot Car” since I was in High School, but I sure do get ‘em in my regular car for some reason. The 100-200 buck fine is stiff, but the story that goes along with it is usually worth more, especially when we’re swappin’ stories at the local car show. Once I got pulled over by a State Trooper on the highway and after checkin’ my record he said “You Sir, seem to have a habit of going a little too fast, how come?” I responded, “Well, officer, consider me just part of the food chain! I speed, you catch me, I pay the ticket, you keep your job, the judge keeps his and everyone is happy..” “Is that so,” says the trooper. “Yes sir”, I continued, “Ya see, without me in the mix, everything sorta ends!”, “Yeah, and we can end this right now, all I need is your signature on this ticket!” But officer!” Women aren’t immune to being stopped by the law or having outrageous stories, either. Just the other day a friend of mine, who drives one hot 6 Cruisin’ Times ~ January 2018

chevelle told me of the time a cop pulled her over and asked the proverbial question, “Whatcha in a hurry for Ma’am?” “Well, officer, my bra strap just broke and one of ‘em’s hangin’ a little lower than the other and I just have to get home!” “Yes, ma’am,” said the officer, “Be on your way then!” Then there was the guy who had his mother in law staying in his home for 3 weeks. Things were going so well that they invited her to stay for 3 months! On the final day, she insisted on taking a cab to the airport. As the cab left, the son ‘n law noticed she had left her pocketbook and her airplane tickets. He rushed out the door and drove at break neck speeds hoping to catch her. Sure enough, a cop caught him and said “Where’s the fire?” “Well, sir officer, my mother in law forgot her pocketbook which has her airplane tickets in it and she was visiting us supposedly for three weeks, but that turned into 3 months and if I don’t get this to her real fast, she’ll be staying with me for another 3 months!!” The officer didn’t skip a beat,. “I understand exactly, sorry I stopped ya!”

he PPG Goodguys Nationals has an ongoing tradition of being the biggest and best show in the region. And, the gates opened for the 20th annual event in a big way as 6000 street rods and street machines rolled into the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus. They covered the fairground property from one end to the other.

Simply put, if you couldn’t find something to be amazed about, well.....maybe you just weren’t looking at all! Over 400 manufacturers and vendors were set up in the exhibit buildings and midway. Representatives were there to show off new products and answer questions from clients and end-users. Over 100 new products were on display and also contending for Best New Product awards.

Rain curtailed things late Friday afternoon and cancelled the nostalgia drags at National Trails Raceway that evening. That was about the only downside I heard of for the three day event over July 7-9. But, on Saturday & Sunday both the weather and turnout were fantastic. A screaming yellow ’69 Camaro named “Inferno” took home the Goodguys 2017 PPG Street Machine of the Year award for owners John & Nicki Wilkus of Lakeville, Minnesota. The Camaro was built by The Roadster Shop in Mundelein, IL. The Goodguys 2017 Classic Instruments Street Rod of the Year went to Memphis hot rodder, George Poteet’s GTP ’32 Ford Tudor. The deuce was built by Alan Johnson and his team at Johnson’s Hot Rod Shop in Gadsden, AL! There were over two dozen worthy competitors vying for these two prestigious awards.

Activities were taking place in every corner of the grounds. There was the Goodguys Autocross with racers battling for $5K in the Sponsor Shootout At the South end of the overhead transit ride, the Builder’s Award entries attracted plenty of attention. This is always one of the most popular attractions. In Cardinal Hall, at the opposite end of the fairgrounds, the Trendsetter Reunion boasted several previous Street Rod of the Year and Street Machine of the Year winners and even a Ridler Award winner. In between, at every open space and intersection, there was a fabulous collection of street rods and street machines with just about every badging imaginable. If you were looking for inspiration or ideas, there was certainly a wide variety in Columbus. When you became hungry, thirsty or simply tired of walking, you could sit on a bench or curb and watch the cruisers driving by. I guess one might call it curb service for gearheads! I really doubt you could see everything even if you attended all three days. A tight schedule limited me to about six hours of shooting on Saturday. So, there were buildings and other ground locations I simply was not fast enough to get around to seeing. Goodguys PPG Nationals in Columbus still remains one of my favorite super shows and I’m already looking forward to 2018!

When the Summer nights are hot and the hot rods are even hotter, this is where you’ll find them! They’ll be nestled on the quiet, tree shaded lawn that is the Veteran’s Park in Downtown Painesville! This is where you’ll find any where from 250 to over 350 classics, hot rods and antique cars randomly packed into a comfortable tree shaded town square. Folks generally start to show up around 3 or 4 pm and continue to flow in and out until the sun goes down. Never a dull moment! You’ll find a number of places for food at some of the surrounding restaurants or visit Virgil’s Truck for a hot dog or East Coast Custard will have custard too. bout 2 months ago, I took my father over to a friend’s house for dinner where I was cooking for everyone. I had 3 ribeye’s from Costco on the grill. The only reason why I say where I got them from is because if you’ve ever shopped there, you would know that each one of those bad boys weighs about 1.25 pounds each, a beautiful sight in my book. When they hit medium rare, I put them on a cutting board and brought them to the table. Everything was all plated up and as I’m taking the cutting board away, I spilled almost all the juice right on my friends beautiful off white dining room carpeting. At least 4 – 6 ounces, enough to be a major problem. You should have seen the look on their faces…. like that’s going to leave a stain I could hear them thinking. At that moment I knew I had everything under control because of 2 simple things. It wasn’t a chemical and it wasn’t a brush, it was good old fashioned hot water and a couple microfiber cloths. I knew that by using water to remove this (Potential) stain along with the microfibers ability to soak up many times its weight in water that I could lift it out without making it worse and that’s exactly what I did. They were in awe and I was pretty impressed myself. I tell this story because it goes along with what we teach in the detail shop. “Water is your best friend” and do not use brushes, they only make matters worse. If you want to have the best chance of avoiding a stain and removing one that’s already there, use warm/hot water, a wash mitt (Or microfiber) and a small amount of cleaner. Let the heat from the water lift the stains while at the same time bringing debris to the surface. Using microfiber gives you the ability to work with a lot of water without leaving the carpets super wet.

For awesome looking interior carpeting: 1. If you have access to an air compressor, blow out underneath the seats.

2. Vacuum floor boards. 3. Spray carpet cleaner/shampoo on the floor area where you are working. 4. (Wear gloves for hot water) take a wash mitt or microfiber cloth with a fair amount of water and “shampoo area”. Using a microfiber cloth gives you the ability to maneuver around the cracks and crevices better. They also give you the ability to “release” water as you need it. 5. Vacuum again, this time to remove any excess water you can suck up. 6. Take a dry microfiber cloth and use it to absorb water from the carpet fibers. Open up the cloth and rub it back and forth throughout the area that you just shampooed. You may see additional dirt and debris come to the surface where at that point, you would do a quick vacuum one more time. One thing to keep in mind is that you can wring the microfiber cloths out when they get too wet, just like a chamois. Use them to absorb all the excess water you can.
