Randomly Speaking Vacations
L
ast year went on vacation in Las Vegas for the annual SEMA show. I had always wanted to go to the annual event held in Las Vegas this time I decided to make it one of those working vacations. Ya know, a way to escape the rigors of everyday life and rub shoulders with all the biggest names in the automotive world. I really learned some amazing things. First of all, judging from their airport, freeways and the amount of hotels, there are too many people in Vegas. Why does it always seem to be too many people in exactly the place you’re goin on vacation. Maybe we ought to have a national vacation lottery and draw for the weeks of the year that we take on vacation. It would thin out the crowds and be better for all the vacation areas that either have too many people.. or not enough. There also ought to be a limit to how much time anyone has to spend in an airplane or car to get to the vacation location. Places that are hard to get to are not necessarily better, but it seems that the farther away they are from our homes the better they seem to be.
Another thing I learned, it’s difficult to break my normal routine when I’m on vacation. The trick of a real vacation is not in getting over the feeling the world is passing you by, but not caring whether it does or not. By the time you settled into relaxing, it was time to go home, and by the time I got home I was so tired I needed another vacation. It amazed me how much money it costs to do not much of anything when you’re on vacation. Tipping costs a lot more when you’re on vacation than it does when your home. I didn’t notice that people weren’t any better natured or any more relaxed when they’re on vacation than at any other time of the year. I guess if you’re a pain in the neck at home, you’re a pain in the neck when you’re on vacation. In fact we visited “New York-New York”, which is an exact replica of the Big Apple. Inside you actually walk down streets and alleys that are identical to Brooklyn and the Bronx, right down to the manhole covers that have steam coming out of them. It was so life like, there were even people who were complaining just like in NYC and it turns out they were on vacation from .... Guess where? New York City! One of the many things I don’t like about a vacation is that you always end up counting the number of days you have left. The people I talked with seem to enjoy planning a vacation continued on page 9

n June 20th, 2016 was our next stop on the Lucky 7 Tour. “Cruisin’ The River” in Lowellville, Ohio brings both Oh and Pa cars together for a fresh batch of vehicles. They had an assortment of foods, DJ Lee Martel and Dave and Eds swap meet booth. It ended up being another hot one in the 90s but it produced a huge group of quality cars even with the threat of rain later on that night. They also had the annual Turtle races for the kids - see pictures on the right.

Saturate That Paint.. One of the things that I have noticed from demo-ing products at the shows is that many people look at our demo vehicles and say “well of course it looks good, how many coats of wax do you have on there?” Hence, my very point. At a show, we may wax the show car 30-50 times throughout the weekend and this should answer a few frequently asked questions. Here are 3 frequently asked questions: 1. Can you over wax? Not really. Yes, you do get to the point where there is no more room for the wax to get into the pores of the paint and at that point, you’re just reinforcing what is already there but too much is what gets you that perfect shine. Too much, is what gets your car cleaner when you wash it and too much gets you those looks and compliments that you want to hear when people are envious of your shine. 2. Which way should I rub off the wax, circles or back and forth? The answer is, any way you want. Back in the day, “they”, whoever they are, said circle motions is the best way. Today, you can take product off any way you want. Circles or back and forth, it’s all up to you, just make sure to keep rotating your cloth to expose new areas. A good tip to make sure that you have taken all the wax off is to go to each side of the back of the vehicle, squat and look down the sides

towards the front. Move your head up and down and if there is any wax left behind, you will see it. 3. Can I use other waxes in addition to what I already use? Absolutely… feel free to use other products, other than the ones that you are already using. Some products have more silicone than others, some products have more optical brighteners in them and some waxes last longer than others. If you see a product that looks good, there’s a possibility that it is. Experiment a little, you may be surprised on what you may find. Just for the record, when I use the term wax, I really mean wax, glaze or polish but in order to keep it simple, I use the term wax. Remember one thing. Wax is for protection, glaze is for shine, polish is for cutting and compounds are for removing oxidation. Today, most waxes contain glaze and the longevity of these products is not as long term as the products of yesterday. Frequency of application is what will give you that super slick, super shiny look that everyone is looking for. The more you wax, the more paint problems you will hide as well as the better your paint will look. Happy waxing!!

1979 GMC C15 Stepside Mike Sangregorio Parma, Ohio This project started simple, just fix it up here and there and have some fun with it. That soon changed, next thing you know it was down to the bare frame and while it is this far I might as well do this, do that and project took a 180 real quick. 6 years later I finally got it on the road! This was the first time I went this far with anything so there was a lot to learn along the way. I did all the work myself except for the 700R4 and the 4:10 posi I had installed in the factory 12 bolt rear housing. The 350 is now a 383 stroker with a mild cam. The color is House of Kolor Sunset Pearl that I shot in my small 2 car garage. I am looking forward to next summer to it it out to some local shows. It was a project I enjoyed very much.

1965 Pontiac Catalina 2+2 Al & Barb Leiby IWellington, Oh This 1965 Pontiac 2+2 was purchased new by Andrew and Veronica Kino, of Wickliffe, Ohio. In August of 1993 Matt & Wally Schilkowski , of Fairview Park, Ohio, bought the car from John Pinchot, of North Royalton Ohio. The car was in less than great shape and underwent a frame off, four year plus restoration. Finished in 1998, Matt, his wife Kathy & Wally hit the car shows & cruise in’s together. Matt & Kathy in their restored 1966 tri-power 2+2 and Wally in the 65. The pair (the cars and father & son) are well recognized at the local car shows as well as at the local and national POCI meets. The cars made the cover of the April 2003 High Performance Pontiac Magazine, and over the years their garage shelves were filled with trophy’s won by both. A couple of years ago Matt developed some health problems that slowed him down and this spring the decision was made to sell both cars. Al & Barb Leiby were lucky enough to be the first ones offered a shot at the 65 & they took it home. The car sports the original dark blue bucket seat interior with console & floor shift. A few coats of Blue Charcoal base coat, clear coat were applied over flawless bodywork. The bright work was re-chromed, the stainless was buffed and renewed 2+2 emblems were applied. The classic exterior was finished with 8 lug wheels. A recent addition are the G-70 14 redline, bias ply, Coker tires.

he Coca-Cola Cavalcade of Stars was one of the most successful racing programs to come along during the late 60’s thru the mid 70’s. It’s structure, organization and implementation brought match racing to the next level and introduced, marketed and made stars of lower budget fuel funny cars. In 1967, the funny car was officially recognized by NHRA as a valid eliminator bracket of its own, the fuel funny car by 1969 had developed a large following, throughout the country, featuring legions of low buck entries in competition 65 to 70% of the drivers and crew were barely in their mid 20’s. These young guns had

cut their teeth during their teen years in gas and super stock classes and had become very good. Even then, money was the great deciding factor and while many of the lower budget cars ran very good, they were not quite quick enough to run with the Blue Max’s of the world making them perfect for the Coca-Cola circuit. Understanding the interconnected tracks will help you understand how the circuit began. New York National Speedway opened in 1966 owned by Gil Kohn and managed by Ed Eaton. Gil also owned Detroit Dragway and was well connected with the Gold Agency in Chicago which booked all their match race teams that
