Randomly Speaking Christmas List..

C

heated/air conditioned building that keeps him in good spirits or the “female modeling agency” down the hall, but I for one certainly appreciate his “high step”.

We make a lot of trips to local print stores, buying paper, ink and stuff, so we get to know a lot of the employees. At the local shop there’s a guy there named Bob, who walks round with a cane and when you ask him to show you something he uses his cane to bang on the shelf with a “there ya go”. It’s that personal touch I’ll always remember. I’m thinking of putting him on top of the Christmas list which should keep him from hitting me with his cane.

Since we’re located in Rocky River, I’ve noticed the police seem to be a little “radar happy”. I mean hiding out in the parking lot next store so the innocent speeder who hears his radar detector go off thinks it’s the doors to grocery store. I think they’re a bit on the lazy side. I say, get back out there on 1-90 with the rest of the pros, besides the fines are bigger and it would be more profitable and they could pay for that new Court House a lot quicker. I’m giving them 1 month to find a new location or they won’t even get a Christmas card from me.

ruisin’ season has just ended for most of the north east and as you may know, Cruisin’ Times doesn’t slow down as much as our outdoor events do. We are busy preparing for “Swap Meet” and the “Indoor Show” season like the Piston Power Show in Cleveland, Ohio. Which means back to the grind to get winter projects done that took the back seat during the summer.

The phone company probably won’t be on the list, since I found out after being on the phone for 3 hours that the same phone service you have at home costs twice as much when you say the magic words “I need an office phone”. And they wonder why everyone uses cell phones? Hello, number please! On the list will definitely be the little restaurant down the street which, believe it or not, the owners drag race every weekend! In fact, when a friend introduced me he said, “This is John - he’s into cars too!” They said, “I hope it’s not Porsches, cause we have enough of those with all the lawyers around here.” I said, “No it’s the V8 kind that make lots of noise”, they said, “Good, then you’re welcome anytime!” Although I bitch and complain about the post office, I’m adding our mailman to the list. He brings the mail right up to the office. We also have a giant mail box in the building foyer that another postman empties twice a day. I don’t know whether it’s the 6 Cruisin’ Times ~ December 2018

Speaking of deliveries, our UPS man, is on the list as well, always stopping by the office to drop off a large delivery of magazines or to check and see if we needed anything shipped.

I know for sure that the building maintenance people will be on the list. So will the cleaningcrew that comes in at night. They’re just thrilled we’re not one of those boring offices and they all seem to really like my “flamed trash can”. One of our neighbors who’s definitely going to be on the list, is an attorney who will remain nameless. He came by one Saturday while I was working late and introduced himself adding “I’m an attorney specializing in traffic and speeding tickets, if you ever have a run in with the Rocky River police, I’m your guy!” I think he’ll get the biggest present. ...course that’s just me randomly speaking.

any car cruises have originated around a worthy cause and the cruising community has stepped up big time to help out while also enjoying the fellow gearheads. This show fits right in with that description. Tanner Noble is a student at LaBrae High School and was diagnosed in 2015 with Stage Four Medullary Thyroid Cancer. Tanner’s cancer spread to his lungs, liver, spine and neck. The Leavittsburg community created the TannerTuff Cruise to help with the expenses of experimental Chemotherapy.

Recently there was a special night for Tanner. To be honest they were not sure if he would make it to his senior season but God has plans for this young man. Tanner donned his #50 football jersey and got in on the final play of the regular season. There was one last play with his senior teammates and he was presented with the game ball. Please keep Tanner in your thoughts and make plans to attend this great event in 2019! That’s all I have - Joe

In just a few years this show has grown to include a huge Chinese Auction and raffle items, multiple food vendors and baked goods, T-Shirts and additional items. The trophies are unique and there is music from a DJ and a couple of live groups. The weather was perfect for a cruise and an excellent selection of hot rods, customs, antiques and even a few tractors pulled into the LaBrae Little Vikings field for the show. There are additional fund raisers and information can be found on Facebook and online sites by searching #TannerTuff.

WILD HOT ROD WEEKEND 7 Photos and Story by John McCartney

For the seventh straight year the hard working folks at the Dead Man’s Curve Car Club USA has taken over the entire Sheraton Mahwah Hotel complex and turned into a car lover’s playground. Each and every year car clubs and car lovers from all over the United States and Canada mark their calendars to make a trip over Labor Day weekend to take part in this very unique one of kind show. With this being the 40th Anniversary of the Dead Man’s Curve Car club this was the show everyone wanted to take part in and help Dead Man’s Curve celebrate their special birthday. For five days all sorts of cars come pouring into the Sheraton Mahwah Hotel complex in the form of muscle cars, hot rods, customs, rat rods, street freaks, vintage race cars you name you can find it on display here. Each and every year the cars seem to change and get bigger and better as over thousand and thousands of cars are cleaned up and put on display. As you turn a corner your jaw seems to drop, as there is another car many, which you have never seen before. For this show seems to continue to change and improve as folks make it a point to make the trip to Mahwah, New Jersey. Many car clubs start to show up on Wednesday to take part in the opening night cruise and mark out the prime spots for the best part to display all of their members rides and set up their compounds to celebrate all that what makes this event special. 16 Cruisin’ Times ~ December 2018

Throughout the run of the show bands play both and inside of the hotel, whether it be in the Surf City Lounge, the upstairs ballroom, in the pool area everywhere you turn you were treated to all sorts of music. Crash Gordon and Debra Dynamite kicked the whole weekend off and came back many times during the run of the show to entertain everyone. If you recalled the classic Ed Sullivan TV show there was a complete recreation of the show on Thursday night complete with a Ed Sullivan impersonator,

a comedy magic act, and capped all off with the one and only Elvis who came back for this show as well. The music styles of the Beach Boys, Stray Cats, the British Invasion, and surf and rockabilly music were all on display. Dj’s Funzul and Johnny Belair kept everyone entertained during the weekend playing all sorts of classic music from back in the day on the turntables over a giant sound system.

Many famous folks from TV, movies, music worlds and car building worlds come out to the show to spend time with fans and checking out the cars as well. Butch Patrick who everyone recalls as Eddie Munster from the Munster’s TV show enjoys meeting everyone and talking about the good ole days of TV. Rock and roll icon and leader of founder of eighties metal hair band Twisted Sister Dee Snider took part in the show as well this year. From current TV show Counting Cars was Horny Mike of Counts Kustoms spent time as well talking about all the cars and artwork that have been created over the run of the show and continue to be built. From the present to the past Gene Winfield who has been involved in the car culture world building and creating cars for many decades also spent hours and hours talking about his creations. Each and every year car builder and designer Rick Dore makes it a point to attend the Wild Hot Rod Weekend and spends time walking the entire show grounds and jumping behind the wheel of the Lynwood Dragster when it is fired up. Dennis Gage of My Classic Car TV show brought out his camera crew to record all the action of this show to be featured in an upcoming show. Inside the ballroom in the hotel fans were treated to classic TV and movie cars and many of the Dead Man’s Curve Car Club special creations. Along with these there are vendors and pin stripers throughout the grounds as well with all sorts of goodies for folks to purchase. Thunder Alley under the guidance of Al Liebmann is a cool display of vintage funny cars, dragsters, altered, gassers close to twenty of these machines could found on display. During the weekend all the cars are fired up with money being collected for Alex’s Lemonade Stand to help stamp out cancer. Lucas Oil, Tub-O-Towels, CRC, Rez Beverages, and FreeAll all of these companies help to get this one of kind display together for everyone to enjoy sponsor thunder Alley. As this show continues to grow it comes as no surprise that every car club in the area makes it a point to attend the Wild Hot Rod Weekend each and every year. You can be assured that when 2019 rolls around you will find even more car clubs and lots more cool never before seen cars taking part. Dead Man’s Curve Car Club USA starts working and planning on the next Wild Hot Rod Weekend the minute that present year’s event comes to a close. Wild Hot Rod Weekend 8 will return once again to the Sheraton Mahwah Hotel in Mahwah, New Jersey in 2019 and for many many years to come each year getting bigger and better. Photos by John McCartney

Words and Photos Ron Dustman/DustmanArt

little over ten years ago, John and I were talking about a bunch of things and he began outlining his ideas for producing a calendar. Something that would feature a bunch of Northern Ohio’s finer cars that could represent what this area is known nationally for! Believe it or not, our small area (Northern Ohio and PA) represents more classic cars and hot rods than most centers nationwide. John one time said something about a fact that we are second only to the West Coast for the number of registered hot rods and custom classics! I can only agree with him after shooting these cars for my minimal time in the industry! Everywhere I go, there are cars hiding in all kinds of places! When you think about it, we should be proud of that fact since we only have a short “good weather” time frame to enjoy our past time! Add to that, the number of builders and folks involved in the industry, and you see that we should be proud of our nationwide reputation!

John Shapiro

With these points in mind, the idea John had was monumental! Select sixteen of the area’s finest machines and have a calendar and a cruise to show them off! What an idea! Well, this article shows the result of this passing idea that was put together by the minimal staff of the greatest cruising magazine in the country! Thanks to John Shapiro, and the whole staff at the Cruisin’ Times Magazine!!! December 2018 ~ Cruisin’ Times 25

Do-It Yourself by: Dave Mallie

Detailing ™

Getting Intricate

I

just got done cleaning the interior of a friends’ vehicle and while doing so, I thought it would make for a good Do-It-Yourself-Detailing article. I say this because I had to use a non-traditional household items in order for me to get into the interior cracks and crevices that are very difficult to reach, while vacuuming out the interior and wiping down the dashboard area. One thing that is sometimes a problem is getting the vacuum wand between the seats, or between the tracks of the seats and the floor boards and often times this area has a bunch of hard to reach crumbs, un-eaten French fries and other debris that will make an interior detailing job a little more difficult to do, especially without an air compressor to blow this debris out from under the seats. One of the best tools to help you get into these small and intricate areas is a plain old flathead screwdriver, however, the metal tip will surely leave scratches on plastic and other components and to avoid this, all you do is wrap it in a towel or cloth, so you can use it to pry loose debris from those very tough places you cannot get to without it. Besides a flathead screwdriver, a wooden or metal ruler will do the same thing,

PROTECT-A-SLEEVE

just make sure to use the towel over it or you could do more harm than good. Now you are all set to get between the seats like a pro! Another good tool for getting into hard to reach areas not on the floor is something called a “vent and dash” brush, which has soft bristles on the end that will let you get into areas impossible to reach too. In particular to today, I used one to get the crumbs and dust from behind the steering wheel, the area where the key goes into the dash, the air vents as well as when I cleaned the dirt from the gas a brake pedals with my cleaner. If you do not have the right tools, you can improvise, just as I did today, just remember that any exposed metal on something you are using to pry loose dirt out of small areas will scratch those surfaces, so make sure the cloth or towels you use is on the thicker side!

Willie’s‘56 Chevy Belair Massillon, OH. I purchased this 1956 Chevy Belair in Niles, Ohio in 1997. It is all original. No power. All manual brakes, steering, and windows. Auto Powerglide transmission. I did eventually change the the transmission to a 350 a few years ago. I love this car. It has been worth every penny! 30 Cruisin’ Times ~ December 2018

Bill’s ‘79 Ford Thunderbird Bedford, OH. My wife was shopping for my son’s 17th birthday gift at the North Randle Mall in Oct 78. They stumbled upon the new cars on display for ‘79 and we purchased the car from Commerce Ford on Northfield Rd. and it made my day! It is an original with 65,000 miles with a 351MCID V8, FMX Auto trans, Cruise Control, Auto truck release, AC, Power Steering, Brakes, Windows, Vinyl Roof and Interior, AM-FM Radio with an 8-Track. I enjoy driving my Thunderbird to car shows and cruise-ins or just displaying it whenever I get the chance to do so.

Steve’s ‘26 T Parma, OH. I have loved old coupes since I was 14 and now I’m 64 and I’m still into it! A couple of years ago I traded my ‘23 T for this ‘26. I had to go to New York from Ohio to do the deal, but it was well worth it! It has a 355 with a 350 auto. 12 Bolt Rear End. Motor is chromed out. Interior is Gray Leather and Full Instrument Dash. It has a overhead CD player with a 1000 Watt Amp. The car was re-painted a couple years ago and pinstriped at the same time. I go to all the local car shows and have won many awards and made many new friends!

Moments In Time by: Mike Jusek

Tradition and Evolution The Great Debate

C

ars and Clubs. Wild, Crazy, and it can get Nasty too. Never a dull moment when you bring up Traditional and Evolutionary (modern) styles and technology into our world of wheels. Sure, it’s a touchy subject for us, but it raises its head no matter where you turn. Everything we can think of is being improved upon, and quicker than ever. For anyone that grew up in the 50’s, 60’s and yes, even the 70’s all you have to do is re-live a day from back then and think of things that you did, and more importantly, what you had to work with, to do those things. How about making a phone call? Rotary phones evolved to Touch-Tone, then Cordless, and now Cellular. Taking a picture? Take the film to be developed (FotoMat anyone?), Polaroids with the stinky squeegee-thing, then the SX-70 developing in your hand, then digital cameras. Now…see cell phone. Point is – these things naturally evolved through improvements in technology and for the most part, we have just rolled along with it. BUT!, when it comes to the car world, that’s where things get touchy. Whether we’re talking about your build, professional racing, your critique of another guys car at a cruise-in, or how certain car clubs operate, Tradition and Evolution can, and do, bang heads. I’ve put 2 buckets below to contain Traditional car items and Evolutionary car items. As I put these to print it’s funny how some belong in both. Why? Because what some may see as ‘Modern’ were breaking ground back in the day, just not yet perfected. But for sake of things we tend to argue on, here are the buckets: Traditional – Independent Racers like 4 of my fellow Choppers (Goudreau, Novotny, Mehalik and Teel), Gas Station sponsorships, backyard or club-built cars, flatheads, Chrome reverse, Cragars, Big Block V-8’s, carburetors, mechanical fuel injection, 4-speeds, and car clubs with defined rules/ conditions of membership. Evolution – Big Business/Corporate sponsored professional racing, Cars built by check/

professional shops, 4/6 cylinders, twin turbo’s, lunchbox sized superchargers, 9-speed automatics, electronic engine management systems (computer/data driven), 6 speed stick and clubs that have widened acceptance criteria to gain members. The Car Club section is a good example of past and present. Trying to keep the traditional rules and culture that made a club great in the past but also trying to bring new ideas to keep improving it can be ‘interesting’. And, the wider the age range in that club the more interesting it is. You try to sort out what needs to stay and what can be changed to better the club. Somehow (?) Choppers has managed to blend that enough to last 62 years. But back to cars - here’s one to chomp on… see if you notice this too, or if it’s just me. When I’m at a cruise-in or car show I like to listen to what other folks are saying about the cars they are looking at. And, it’s even more fun when I know what type of car THEY have. Seems to me (just me) that the guys that have the more modern hotrods (LS motor, billet, digital, etc.) have good feedback and respect when looking at an old flathead roadster or coupe. But when a flathead guy looks at a modernized hotrod I typically hear less than positive comments. So – are modernized (Evolution) guys more accepting of the past (Tradition), than the other way around??? Our hobby is so wide, whatever your tastes are, there’s a spot for you. Old-school, newschool, 1920’s thru 2000’s there are people and places for you. And here’s one to think on. Everything that we consider as Traditional now, was Evolutionary ground-breaking stuff in the past. So, somewhere down the line, at a car show in say, 2030, guys with ‘traditional’ LS turbo glass-coupes’s will be talking trash and ripping apart those stupid, modernized Hydrogen-powered WiFi controlled hotrods. Hmmmmm. ~ Mike

Cruisin Through The Ages

L

ooking through some old family photos a while back, I happened upon several pictures taken of my Aunt Rose while visiting distant relatives in Venice, California. One interesting photo was of my aunt sitting in the driver’s seat of her cousin’s 1932 Ford “high-boy” roadster. The little black fenderless roadster was set up with a louvered hood, smoothie steel wheels and early Ford V8 “bottle cap” style hub caps. It was basically set up the same way my current 1932 Ford “high boy” fenderless coupe is. It was a bit eerie to note how similar in style the two cars were. It was eerie because the photo of my Aunt in the “high boy” roadster was taken in 1946, two years before I was born! When you look back through the evolution of street rodding, it is interesting to note how build styles have progressed through the years from home built cars put together with junk yard parts; to hot rods built with specialty speed equipment and custom parts; to the era of bubble gum color paint and billet parts; to the custom engineered one-off six figure cars and now back to the 40’s and 50’s style hot rods of times past. One can only wonder, what’s next? Incidentally, the term “hot rod” was not really used in the beginning of our sport. In the 40’s and early 50’s hot rods were often referred to as “hop-ups and gow-jobs”. Hop and gow were slang terms for drugs such as opium and others used to improve performance in race horses. A horse that was faster than others was referred to as being hopped-up or gowed-up. The terms then somehow became commonly used to describe a “souped-up” old car, faster than other vehicles and a bit dangerous. More power and speed were of course, the goals.

YOU WILL EVER NEED!

One element of street rodding that played a huge role in our sport was the muscle car era of the 60’s. While the 30’s and 40’s style hot rods were popular on the west coast, it was the American muscle cars of the 60’s that were rapidly gaining popularity back east. One likely reason was that it was a little too hard to drive a 1930’s hot-rod roadster during the winter snow and slush back here in Cleveland, Ohio. Remember, back then most hot rodders had just one car. I know my first hot rod street machine was a muscle car era 1967 SS 396 Chevelle that I bought brand new and drove summer and winter, rain, snow or shine. Back here in the east, the influence the 60’s era muscle cars had on hot rodding are still noticeable today. When I was Director of Sportsman Racing for the National Hot Rod Association in Glendora, California, I would occasionally attend a monthly car show in the parking lot of the NHRA museum in Pomona, California. The mix of cars was really a bit different out west than seen at monthly car shows here in the northern Ohio area. The mix was generally composed of a higher percentage of 30’s and 40’s era hot rods. Back here in the east you do see a number of 30’s and 40’s hot rods, however, there are usually more 60’s and 70’s era muscle cars in attendance. Weather it’s the 30’s and 40’s style hot rods, the 60’s and 70’s muscle cars, or the current generation of super fast hot rods such as the Dodge Demon and Z06 Corvette, “hopped-up” cars will always exist. The love of power and speed transcends time and connects us to our history. It’s all hot rodding and it’s all good! ~ Len
