Randomly Speaking Indoor car shows

his time of year my “non-car friends” always seem to say, “Boy you must be goin’ crazy since there’s no car shows to go to!”. and I tell them, “For the next 3 months, there will be more winter indoor car shows than you can shake a stick at!” I tell them of the upcoming Cleveland Auto Show, Various World of Wheels shows, the IX Piston Powered Show, Detroit Auto-Rama, The Buffalo Cavalcade of Cars and later in April The Choppers Rod & Custom Show. And that’s just a fraction of the indoor shows in the mid-west and east regions. They look at me like it’s some underground deal. And I’m wondering if a lot of you think the same thing.

and personal was something you don’t soon forget. These show cars helped addict youngsters by the thousands, who obviously matured into car crazed loonies just like you and me. Those old shows also offered the spectator a chance to see local cars too, that were build by the not so famous. These cars were just as good as the “star cars” but never got the notoriety. I always remembered that. Now, some 50 some odd years later, we help bring 50 of those their deserving moment in the lights on the red carpet at the Cleveland Piston Powered Auto-Rama. The aim for each year when we go around inviting cars is either fresh builds, unique vehicles, or are built to cruise, but on the same token, are “so nice” they seem to have that “special look”, one that causes you to do a double take. We think this years new line of cars have that look. Come by and check out the lucky 50 (and 900+ more) at the 2020 Piston Power show at the IX Center March Flip through our pages of the Cruisin’ Times Magazine and you’ll see there’s plenty of events to pick from during these winter months to keep you from goin’ crazy!

I’ve always had a soft spot for the winter Auto-Rama. They used to be held in old Armories in every city across America. When I was a kid, probably around 12 years old, it was the show we all looked forward to during the winter, hoping desperately one of the neighborhood parents would take us to the show. I remember as soon as I’d step into the “hall of cars”, the lights and displays seemed to make the vehicles look like they were a million bucks elevating them to superstar stats right before my eyes. The fact that you could see magazine cars like the Barris’ Ala-Kart, or the Starbirds’ Predicta, Carl Casper’s Popcorn Wagon or any of the A-Brothers Cars, up close 8 Cruisin’ Times ~ December 2019

elebrating Alliance (OH) as the Carnation City, the Greater Alliance Carnation Festival is a ten day festival filled with parades, food and fun throughout the city. One of those days features a Car Show on the historic Glamorgan Castle grounds.

Col. William Henry Morgan built Glamorgan Castle in 1904 and 1905. Morgan invented the overhead traveling crane which made it easier for the steel industry to operate on a large tonnage basis. The castle was built on a fifty acre tract and is made of Vermont marble. In 1928, Col. Morgan died and the castle was sold to the Elks lodge. In 1964, Merrick Lewis purchased the property to use as the corporate headquarters of Alliance Machine Company and an extensive restoration project was started. In 1973, Glamorgan Castle became the property of the Alliance City School District through a federal grant and the generosity of Lewis. The school district built a new high school on a portion of the grounds directly behind the castle. They continue to use Glamorgan Castle as administrative offices today. Well, that’s it for today’s history lesson!

This location provides a great backdrop for the annual car show and tours of the castle are also available for those who are interested. Out on the show field there were over 250 vehicles on display. Military vehicles featured a 1963 tank and the vintage hearse display included an 1890 horse drawn unit. A nice mix of rods, customs, antiques, trucks and race cars made for an excellent show. Dash plaques were handed out to the first 250 participants and 100 trophies were awarded. Spikeman filled the air with music and several food vendors were on hand to satisfy any hunger pains. The show’s location boasts easy access and plenty of space for gearheads, their cars and even for spectators. This is one to keep in mind when you set up your 2020 show schedule!

or the 11th straight year the Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Drags and Car Show put together a a great show at Cecil County Dragway. Cecil County Dragway located in Rising Sun, Maryland is a drag strip with a great deal of history. On a picture perfect day all types of vintage drag racing cars came into Cecil County to take part in this once a year event. From classic front motor dragsters to gassers, funny cars if it ran back in the glory days of the sport of drag racing you could find it here taking part in the event. Well over 16 funny cars took to the track to lay down smokey burnouts just like the old days. Some of the highlights included a pair of Frantic Ford Mustang bodied funny cars pairing up against each other. Rocky Pirrone the owner of the early 70â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Frantic Ford faced off with the later seventies Frantic Ford of the Sweetman family. It was a great site to see these cars race each other since they never did back in the day. With the original car owner Fred Frey in the house watching the cars that his son Bobby Frey put together brought back the old day match racing feel. Chris and Krista Masserella had their pair of Monza Funny Cars there both do battle. Time Bomb Vega of Rocky Roxlau laid down several smokey burnouts. Along with the funny cars there were a number of great exhibition cars on hand to entertain the fans.

In some of the racing classes there were several groups on hand running their cars. East Coast Gassers had a nice turnout of all sorts of cool gassers when the smoke had cleared Jim Wheeler took home the title over Rob Carson. Keith Soden got the win in the Backseat drivers class taking the win over a great field of front motored dragsters. With 34 cars in the house John Quinn picked up the victory in the Mandra class in his 1955 Chevy. The NETO group had 27 racers taking part in two classes when the smoke had cleared Frank Paradiso got the win over Joe Puma in Nostalgia Eliminator. While over in NETO Comp Vinny Laurita Sr. picked up the title over Jim Mullen. In addition to all the great racing taking place on the drag strip fans could take a break and check out a great car show. All sorts of great classic cars from the early days of muscle cars, hot rods and customs could be found filling every square inch of the car show. Trophies were handed out in many classes making all the hard work of cleaning pay off to those that stood out the best. Fans could take a walk into the great swap meet area to see what sort of goodies they could find to start, continue or finish any project one might be working on.

A BIG HIT IN THE POCONOS Photos and Story by John McCartney Rat’s Nest Run-In is one special cool get together for all those that love and dig Pre-65 Rodz and Kustomz. Fans of those unique cars get together on one great weather day in the beautiful Pocono’s Mountains in Matamoras, Pennsylvania. Rat’s Nest Pete and his fine Rat’s Nest crew gathered some of the finest hot rods, customs, muscle cars of all shapes and styles to take over the Best Western Inn at Hunt’s Landing.

While Pete and his staff worked very hard on getting the first of many Rat’s Nest Run-In up and running at the Best Western Inn at Hunt’s Landing in Matamoras, Pennsylvania of which there will be many, many, more. There hard work will no doubt result in a long run as they continue to have with the Rat’s Nest Run-In at Blackthorne Result in East Durham, New York as that event will celebrate number ten this year in August and will be around and running for many more years to come just as the Rat’s Nest Run-In will have in the Pocono’s located in Matamoras, Pennsylvania. ~ John

Car owners and lovers came out in force to enjoy this unique event. Rat rods were in the house in all shapes and styles from pick ups, roadsters, and full size trucks. You could find rat rods being towed by other rat rods. Straight forward Hot Rods from vintage barn find hot rods to fully restored Hot Rods as well. Crazy customs in all forms for everyone to enjoy and see take in as well. From cars with blowers and doors that opened in all different ways if you can dream it or think it you could more than likely find it in the rolling fields and Pocono Mountains at the this year’s inaugural running of the Rat’s Nest Run-In in Pennsylvania. In addition to all the great cars on display there was so much more to do and see. From a giant swap meet to live bands playing all day well into the night. The Rough Shapes, Red Neckromancer, Whiskey Kill, Kyle Trocolla and the Strangers, Jennie Angel, The #9 Blacktops, The Mopar Cams and The SciFlies all played during the Rat’s Nest Run-In. Cherry Valentine, Sincerely Yours and Minnie D’Moccha all did their own style of Burlesque which kept everyone entertained for sure. Along with these ladies Rat’s Nest Run-In held their own pin up girl contest with all of the ladies that took part in that event going home with some very cool prizes.

onneaut Lake Park is located on Conneaut Lake just east of Pymatuning Lake on the Pennsylvania border. The park and adjacent buildings have occupied this area since 1892 when the park was originally established. For years, the lake, the park and the whole area enjoyed a flourishing economy due to the park that made Conneaut Lake the place to be for fun and family enjoyment! In 2004, the first of a short four years of cruises began. The idea was to make this excellent setting the site of an annual gathering of hot rods and the folks that enjoy that past time. The original plan was to have the cruise bookend the summer by inviting folks out on Memorial Day and have them out again on Labor Day! Great idea! I was lucky enough to get there in September of 2004, the close of the first year of the experiment. The feeling was magical with cars all over the place, people wandering around looking at everything to see and a general good vibe! The park has an amusement park area with rides, the beach was full of folks getting all the sun they could find before the summer closed out! You could feel the energy in the air! An all around perfect spot.

bout a month ago a good friend of mine told me about a ‘certain fella’ and what he did at a local car show. My friend was really ‘scorched’ over this guys actions and asked me if I could sorta’ ‘call this guy out’, without actually naming him, of course. Well, I was trying to think of how to do this, and hopefully, tie it into something besides a ‘Most Wanted’ poster. Well, I’m driving home from work one day and listening to one of the Comedy channels on Sirius radio and this comedian, T. Bubba Bechtol comes on and I’m laughing out loud to nobody but me. Bubba was talking about people he calls “IgMo’s”. He says Igmo is a combination of ‘ignernt’ (yes, he spells it out this way) and ‘moron’. In his words, the real word ignorant means you just don’t know, but where he’s from, ‘ignernt’ means you don’t even know you don’t know! As for moron, well kinda’ goes without saying, right? Bubba’s routine goes through tons of examples. Think of taking an hour flight to Chicago. Guy sits down next to you and first thing he says, “So, you going to Chicago?” Igmo. Me, I’d tell him “No, was planning to jump out at the 30-minute mark and drop in on Detroit”. This got me to thinking. Besides the blatantly dumb things we hear people say or see them do (true Igmo’s in action), what about the people that do something that leaves you shaking your head and saying to yourself, ‘how can they NOT KNOW that that is all kinds of wrong?’ (or something like that, only with a few expletives thrown in). Or as I view it, they are making a conscious effort to be a moron. So I’ll start my own term, a ‘Con-Mo’. These folks are fully aware they are doing or saying something totally off-base and don’t really give a hooey. They just let it rip, and to heck with everyone else.

Which leads me back to the start of this whole thing. Seems my friend, along with others at this car show, observed a certain “Shoe Box’ owner (see, by saying Shoe Box it doesn’t single it out as a Chevy, ‘Doh!’) at the table to cast votes. Well, this piece of work filled out a wad, handful, boat-load of tickets with his car # on all. Not being sneaky or trying to hide it, just stuffing those babies in there. Well, Surprise/Surprise!...he won. Now, how in Blue Blazes can someone pull a stunt like this, with others watching, and then proudly walk up to get his trophy? What kind of a WIN is this? Even while I write this, I don’t know what to call him (that I can print). Is he an IGMO? A CONMO? I mean, let’s face it, he clearly knew what he was doing, didn’t feel the least bit of concern or embarrassment in doing it. And then, acted surprised at his so-called win! I guess you can call him whatever you like, but one thing stays constant her. Whether IGMO or CONMO, the Moron part stays. And for what? A new chunk of plastic? Wonder if he showed it off to his ‘Buds’, like, Look what I won! Well, congratulations Sparky!, bet you’ll read this and show this to your friends, too and say ‘Look! I made the Cruisin’ Times!’

1934 Ford Cabriolet - All Henry Ford steel. Louvered hood is a steel aftermarket. Original body taken off frame & put on a Lincoln Mfg. frame w/ mustang 2 front end. Tubular upper A arms. All original body parts but hood. Have original gas tank cover w/ bumper holes & spare tire holes in it. Also have original rechromed rear bumper & bracket. Bored .30 over 350 Chevy & 350 Transmission. 8” Ford rear end with leaf spring rear end. Power steering, power brakes w/ front disc, heat & air conditioning, tilt wheel, cruise control, power windows, digital dash, stereo & suicide doors with locking latches. The car has dual electric fans, 1 thermostatically controlled & other switch operated for use when using a/c. Car does not run hot on the hottest days. Top & interior are very nice. Parade boot & rumble seat. I put the rubber on the running boards, brand new wheels, new 9” stainless head lights & put the original re-chromed front bumper back on it.
