We all know horsepower is a measurement of how much muscle our hot rods possess. It’s a form of status that dictates our rank among peers and symbolizes how much power we have in our control. But where did the horsepower measurement originate? Linguistically, you might assume that a horse can produce 1 horsepower, but in reality, it’s not even close. In the 18th century, the development of the steam engine provided a reason to compare the output of horses with that of the engines that could potentially replace them. In 1782, a Scottish engineer named James Watt conducted experiments and found that a ‘brewery horse’ could produce 32,400 foot-pounds per minute under heavy load. However, that measurement had little to do with the horsepower metric. To arrive at the value of 1 horsepower, Watt averaged the output of 10 horses over the course of a work day. According to Watt’s calculation, it turns out that the maximum output of a horse is around 15 horsepower. Watt’s motivation for quantifying horsepower was driven by his development of an improved steam engine. To help market his innovation, he used his horsepower calculation to demonstrate how many horses his engine could replace. AMERICAN CRUISERS ANNUAL CRUISE FOR THE METRO HEALTH BURN UNIT This year marked the 29th Annual Car Show organized by the American Cruisers Ohio Car Club to benefit Adult Burn Survivors in Cuyahoga County. The event would not have been possible without the cooperation of UAW Local 1005, the General Motors Parma Plant, and the MetroHealth Burn Unit. The expansive parking lot provided ample space for a stunning array of cars, trucks, bikes, project vehicles, powerful muscle cars, rumbling coupes, roadsters, sedans, and several classics. Multiple food trucks catered to the thirst and hunger of everyone in attendance. The Main raffle offered participants a chance to win $500 in cash, a two-piece tool chest, and $100 in cash, along with Lotto Scratchers for an opportunity to win even more. Live music was performed by The Stringer Brothers band, and face painting proved to be a popular attraction for the kids in attendance. The day was filled with exceptional cars, friendly people, and fun with a purpose. The club members demonstrated excellent organization and kept the event running smoothly.

While Cleveland isn’t too far away, there were many vehicles that I didn’t recall seeing at other events prior to this show. This is certainly one of the benefits of venturing a bit farther than local shows. This was my first time attending the American Cruisers’ show, but I will definitely be returning. I caught up with Hoback following his final stint of track time at Gridlife’s Mid-Ohio meet in August, where he showed me what is likely the most affordable race car money can buy.
It has to be a pretty good feeling that your most worn-out item is brake pads.
How was that run? Did you get the time you wanted?
Yeah dude, it literally stays in the trailer, we laugh about it all the time. Like I don’t wash it, I don’t do anything. It just literally stays in the trailer.
It went faster by a full second, but man, the tires were getting hot. (He pops the hood to reveal an almost completely stock engine bay.) That’s it. Nothing but stickers. Just some stickers, huh? Oh, we got a K&N air filter in there [too]. That’s allowed for the Street class, right? Yeah, (laughs) Autozone rotors, like, just some off-the-shelf rotors, nothing (special). How long have you owned the car? Five years. I mean literally we picked it up (from the seller) and went racing. Literally, that was it. And that’s how I figured out (I needed) tranny coolers, [the] brakes suck… They have ‘Top Cop’ and ‘Fast Cop’ and ‘Intruder’... the cops told us ‘these are the ones we put on’. We smoked them all. What was the solution? I called Hawk Performance and said ‘Look, I got this thing I’m doing, can you guys make a pad? Because I’m just annihilating every pad I can get my hands on.’ And they said, ‘Yeah, we’ll try,’ and they did it. I did some testing and I’m like, Yep, here we go!

That is so awesome. What more can you ask for? A Crown Vic is probably about the lowest maintenance race car you could buy. Miata’s probably pretty close… but they just weren’t fast enough (for me). What did you pay for it? I paid $1,800 split two ways to get the car. The seller bought it at the police auction to flip.… It was so cheap to buy that we bought it sight unseen and sent a friend to go pick it up so we could take it to Super Summit that weekend and take people for rides on the autocross course. I think the following weekend it was on the road course. And how often do you race it? I’m at some kind of track almost every weekend. I set the tire pressures and don’t check them for like a month. There’s a group called Auto Interest. These guys (points at a sticker) and we run [a series] called Spec Panther. I saw all of the winner stickers on the back. That’s impressive. Yeah, so I won the points championship two years in a row, (and) I’m leading this year.

And that’s road racing, too? Yeah, we do Time Attack with them (Crown Vics). The competition is probably a little closer there. Some of us kind of wheel-to-wheel each other because we’re good friends, but technically it’s Time Attack. She’s fun, man. What would it take to get a police auction Crown Vic to run the same lap times as the modified sports cars? It really needs another 100 horsepower. Most of the time, Time Attack comes down to driver skill and horsepower with the help of some aerodynamic upgrades. It is hard for 300 horsepower to compete with 600 horsepower, but I bet with a little more money in my Vic, there are several seconds left in it. In short, here’s the formula Hoback used to take a police auction Crown Vic racing and last five seasons without any major issues: cut front springs, custom brake pads, 200 treadwear tires, 18-inch wheels, a transmission cooler, K&N air filter, and a whole bunch of stickers. No sway bars, no shocks, and no performance mods other than the Hawk pads. What other vehicle can you spend so little on and still manage to set lap times merely seconds off of $60,000+ cars like the Porsche 718 Cayman, Nissan GT-R, and the BMW M2? While you look for the answer, I’m heading to the police auction!

Readers Rides John’s 1969 Mustang Mach 1 In 2021, I fulfilled a 40+ year dream of having a 69 Mach 1 since I built a model of one as a teenager! It is pretty much everything I wanted as it is a true Mach 1, 351 engine, manual (a previous owner actually upgraded the 4 speed to a 1987 Mustang 5 speed manual), Magnum 500 wheels and even Acapulco Blue was the perfect color! My wife and I actually named her Jeannie as in “I dream of Jeannie” since I’ve dreamt of owning this car for many years and proof dreams do come true!

This is my 71 Chevelle, I just dropped in a 415ci sbc, turbo 400 trans, 373 gears. The car has 498 HP to the wheels. It’s all original steel except for the fiberglass hood.

Readers Rides Bill’s 1966 Chev Caprice Resto Wagon This is my 1966 Chev Caprice Resto Wagon - Car was from Montana, purchased from a guy in Canada and recently sold back to USA. Has a fully restored body, full body/frame off resto, 427 V8, 700R4 modified transmission, narrowed 12 bolt rear end, custom ram air hood, A/C, custom headliner, custom bodyside moldings and so much more. No rust or patch panels.
Jan & Pat’s 1971 Chevy C10 I first saw this truck for sale in Canfield early one spring. Everything, including anything in Chrome, was painted in Hot Rod black. I wasn’t that impressed but it had potential. After 4 months of searching for the right truck, I saw it again in Columbus and, as I was getting a little desperate, we decided to buy it. I went to work and removed all the painted Chrome items and had the truck painted. My wife decided on the color and what a great choice she made. I did all the work myself including completely rebuilding the original 350, added all the Cheyenne trim and all the new shiny chrome pieces. It has A/C, a 350 transmission, and a stock rear end. We’ve really enjoyed the transformation and all the time we spend cruising in it together!
