Randomly Speaking Band Names...
W
e were going thru some older issues of the mag and discovered the band Phil Dirt & the Dozers and I thought, what a cool name, so memorable. It got me to thinking about band names and how they’ve changed over the years. Here’s just a few to see how many you know: Big Sean featured the ED 40, Tove lo (spelled correctly), Dej Loaf, Walk the Moon and of course Maroon Five (which kinda sounds like a 50’s name). During the 50’s & 60’s groups were basically one name items like: The Diamonds, The Drifters and The Crests. Who can forget the British movement with The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Animals. Before that, “numbers”, played a big part of band names, there were 3 Dog Night, The 4 Lads, The 4 Tops, The 5 Satins, the Dave Clark 5 and The Jackson 5. Apparently there were no 6’s, 7’s or 8’s. Then there were the bands with the lead singers name, followed by the name of the band? Names like: Dion & the Belmonts, Frankie Vallie and the 4 Seasons, Joey Dee & the Starlighters, and even James Brown & the Famous Flames come to mind. As we made our way into the 70’s bands names got shorter and weirder. There were The BeeGees, ABBA and Spy Candy. Then there’s the band that was named after Abbott & Costello’s famous baseball comedy bit.. “Who’s on First”? The Who! And I love this politically incorrect (so to speak) name - the Average White Band. Some of the bands from the Northeast
Ohio area like Eddie & the Edsels, Memory Lane, The New Flames, the Geez-Cats and Rudy & the Illusions have a huge following. Last but not least, are my favorites that would fall into the - “Creative with a Comic Tone” category. That’s where Phil Dirt & the Dozers would be listed. Others like Phil ‘N the Blank and the former Sonny & the Shades come to mind. Sonny is now Sonny Rich who does a bang up job as Elvis Impersonator. If you remember the movie Animal House, then you’ll be familiar with Otis Day & the Knights. Similar bands are: The Above Average Weight Band, The Amazing Embarrasonic Human Karaoke Machine, Bernie the Trailer Park Queen and the Deadbeat Dads, Buck Naked and the Bare Bottom Boys and Buddy Wasisname and the Other Fellas. There’s two bands that play exclusively for hospitals and medical gala events and they are Captain Cardiac and the Coronaries and Cardiac Zach and the Defibulators. There’s Mary Kay and the Cosmetics, who play exclusively for department store chain events and there’s Norman Bates and the Shower Heads, who basically play the cheaper Motel lounge circuits. If there was an award for being politically IN-correct these bands would get it: Rodney King and the Nightsticks, who actually play in the city where their name sake was taken. Then there’s Dick Duck and the Dorks and ... Four Honkies In a Big Black Car. You can imagine the names of bands who play the Vegas late, late nite clubs. Ya know those deep, dark, unknown, back alley casino’s that aren’t listed on the Convention Center “must see” brochures. Bands like Royal Flush and the Jacks of All continued on page 9

eaver, PA opens it streets to some one of the best shows of the year for the “Hot August Nights Cruise”. It was stop #5 on the road tour. Held in downtown Beaver, Pa., bringing in a huge variety of cars to the tune of 2,000+, parking not only along downtown streets but amoung 3 shady parks, downtown shopping, restaurants, free entry, dash plaques, no awards, just a stress free car cruise. Although it officially starts at 1pm, get there early (we heard people were showing up at 5am to get their spots!)

I purchased this car for $500 back in 1982 out of Lakeland, Florida. It had the original flathead and drive train. It did not run so I ended up towing it home. I had young children and did not have time to do much work on it. The original plan was a resto-rod and I continued with some minor work but I ended up puting the car in storage in 1984. The car sat for many years with no work being done on it. At some point I dismantled the car and sold off the drive train. 22 Cruisin’ Times ~ February 2017
I became involved with a frame-off restoration and my business had been operating now for about 15 years and I still had the 39 in storage. I needed a new hobby, so I turned to cars, as I had been involved with this since age 15. The ‘39 came out of storage in 2005 and I disassembled it and sent it to the dip tank. I purchased a Fat Man roller chassis with the ultra low bagged suspension and the rebuild was underway. Simple Solutions.. Over the years I have received many calls having to do with “how to remove extreme amounts of oxidation” which has to be handled a certain way. When the dullness of the paint is extreme, one of the only ways to bring the shine back is to use a high speed buffer of which takes a well trained person to use. Using a high speed buffer not only removes the oxidation (Dullness of the paint), it can remove scratches as well. And If you are not well trained on how to use one, you can quickly ruin the paint too. There are a couple different types of pads that you can use when buffing. One is a wool or synthetic wool pad and the other is made out of foam. Foam pads typically do not cut heavy oxidation the same way wool does but they do a good job of polishing and waxing. To understand the buffing process, you can use dry skin as an example. In order to remove the roughness and bring your skin back to smooth, you first have to clean it, then you have to moisturize it and then you have to take care of it to keep it from becoming dry again. A vehicles’ paint is no different. When your paint is dull, you must remove the dead paint. That is done with compound. Then you have to start filling

the paint back in which is done with a glaze. The final step is protecting it, which is done with a wax. Then repetitive washing is what keeps it shiny and well maintained looking. It does not matter whether your paint is clear coated or not, either way both can become dull over time. The clear coat helps protect the paint against weathering too quickly, and if you wash your vehicle at least a couple times per month, you’ll never have to use a buffer at all. If you are looking for maximum shine and you feel your paint is in need of a good buff out, it is best to contact a detail shop or body shop and have them do it for you. There are many problems a novice will run into and if you are detailing someone else’s vehicle, you definitely don’t need problems!

1969 GTO Wayne W. Tallmadge, OH My wife decided to surprise me for my 59th birthday with the car that I have dreamed of since I was 16. Six months prior she had been diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer and given 2 years to live. That changed our outlook on life. When she sprang the surprise on me she told me she had found a car that she wanted to get me but wasn’t sure if it was everything I wanted. She wouldn’t show me what she found but told me a price limit and said to find the car that I wanted in that price range on the internet. After about an hour I showed her the car I had picked and she smiled and said that was the same one she had picked! After contacting the seller, I found that he had just lost his wife to a rare blood disorder. We shared stories and developed a bond between us which exists to this day. I went to Maryland and drove the car home. When my daughter saw the car she got nervous and thought we had received bad news from the doctors. My wife calmly told her that we didn’t but if something were to ever happen that I would never be able to re-marry because every time I looked at the car I would think of her. She had the last word after all !!! I lost her almost a year later. Needless to say I will never sell the car and I won’t re-marry!

1955 Pickup Yvonne B. Chardon, OH This is our father and son 1955 F100 pick up truck project. We took it down to the frame and rebuilt everything. 347 stroker engine. My son did all the welding on the truck. This was all done within one year. The goal was to take it to the Piston Power 2016, and we just made it and got first place!
