Randomly Speaking Tee-Shirts..
E
very car collector person has a huge Tee-shirt collection. If you don’t, then something is wrong with you. I buy them for various reasons - sometimes to help out a non-profit group, sometimes because the design is so cool and I’ve just got to have it, and sometimes they’re given to us as a thank you gift for helping promote an event. What causes us to buy these shirts? I’ve divided them into a couple categories. The Far Away Shirts. If you drive to any show that’s over one hour away, you fall into the ”Since-we’ve-gonethis-far-you-might-as-well-geta-shirt” syndrome. Besides, you may never go this way again. It doesn’t matter how much they are either, because you justify it as a “souvenir”. You can’t spend too much for souvenirs. Next year, you return to the event just to buy another shirt, because it might be nice to have a whole collection of these “What-chama-call-it-Nationals” shirts. The third year, even though you didn’t like the show, you still go because you now have this collection thing going and 10 years from now you can say “Oh, yeah, I’ve been to the What-ha-ma-call-it-Nationals every single year - it’s a tradition - I’ve got all 10 shirts to prove it!” There’s the “Get-the-shirt-with-the-registration” category. I like those deals, Now, whenever I wear the shirt, I can
tell people that I got it for free. As we all know, our society thrives on telling people how inexpensive things are, saying it was free means you must have known somebody pretty high up on the food chain. Our society thrives on that too. There’s the Auto-Rama Tee-shirt Category. If you go to all the trouble of driving or trailering your car to an indoor show, putting up with the snow, ice and gloom of night, then you owe it to yourself to buy a shirt. Then when you wear it, it becomes a story “Yeah, I did the deed. Yeah, I’m one of the sporting few who braved the elements”, which is important in a car persons life! The great thing about having a Tee-Shirt wardrobe is you never have to worry about ironing. It’s just “wash, fold and wear.” Important tip: Don’t skip the “fold” part of the equation. If you don’t fold them properly, you’ll look like you slept in it. We do sleep in them, but we don’t want anyone to know it. There are three methods of folding Tee-shirts. There is the “In the air” two handed, the “place it on a hard surfacetwo handed” and the one handed pro-version. The 2nd method only took me 25 minutes to learn. Caution: The “in the air” trick requires years of doing laundry and that’s way too difficult for most men. The one handed trick is for professionals only - never attempt yourself and certainly never in front of a buddy. Continued on next page..

Randomly Speaking Tee Shirts.. (continued from pg 6) I have Tee-shirts for every car occasion. If it’s a summer show, I always wear the one from the previous year. That way everyone knows this isn’t my first show. You always want people to know that you’ve done something before. That’s why show promoters sell “last years” shirts. It’s not that they can’t get rid of them or didn’t sell out, it’s so you can get up to speed quickly and efficiently and not have people think it’s the first time you went. A friend of mine always buys two of the event shirts. ne is for everyday wear and the other he saves, so it will have that “still brand new” look. Recently he had all his shirts made into a giant quilt, but they had to cut the sleeves off and he’s till having a hard time getting over that and regularly goes to the TT meet-ings (T-shirt Trauma meetings). It’s a very real disease and can be a real problem. Whenever I go to the drag races, I always wear a “drag racing team” shirt. One that says, Mark Pawuk or Dean Skuza or Dave Connolly. Those drivers are home boys, so I like to support them anyway I can. I also have lots of Cruise-In shirts which are from the various local weekday and weekend Cruise nights.

You’re still “cool” if you wear those today, it shows you’ve been around a long time and you’re a veteran. I’ve even got a “Milner Racing’ shirt. You remember he’s the guy who drove the yellow deuce coupe in the movie, American Graffiti, The shirt is white with black letters that simply says Milner Racing, Irwindale California. Non-car people think I know somebody in the movie or something. Actually I bought it when we met Milner in San Francisco - so it’s half true. I also have my “going-outinto-the-public” car shirts. Those are the ones that generally drive people nuts, because they can’t figure them out. They have sayings only a car collector would know. Imagine a non car person seeing my “Flaming River” shirt, “Jerry’s House of Kolors” or “Rod shop,”. They think I’m either a pyromaniac, a color freak or a deep sea fishing nut..Mostly, I’m a Tee-shirt nut. ...course that’s just me Randomly Speaking. ~ John Shapiro

ROCKABILLY RUCKUS Photos & Words By Joe Secka
T
he Trumbull County Fairgrounds in Cortland Ohio was the setting for the Rockabilly Ruckus August 11-13. Once you looked at the schedule of events, it was easy to see there were a wide variety of activities. Cars were parked all over the show field and many of those took advantage of open track sessions on the 5/8 mile dirt track. Now, that’s not something you get to do very often!

The Commercial Building housed several vendors and the pinstripe artists. You could also get a straight razor shave or a haircut and a makeup area was set up for the ladies entered in the pinup contest. The pinstripe art charity auction benefitted the Warrior Foundation. The fairgrounds provided plenty of open area for the car cruisers where they could choose between a roadside setting and parking under the shade of huge oak trees. There were some swap meet and clothing vendors and a nice mix of food offerings.

A stage in front of the grandstands was used for the pinup contest where Abigail Kremm was crowned Ms. Rockabilly Ruckus for 2017. There was also a Junior Pinup and Junior Greaser contest that was entertaining for sure. Plenty of picnic bench seating was available for a nice crowd who came to cheer the competitors along. A total of ten bands took turns providing the music on Saturday and Sunday. Across the way, the American Motor Drome Wall of Death Motorcycle Thrill show played to a standing room audience several times each day. A Burnout Contest took place on the dirt track Saturday afternoon and Sunday saw vintage auto racing with the VARC (Vintage Auto Racing Club) and Vintage Modifieds in action. The dust was flying reminiscent of the fifties and sixties racing. Overall, it was a pretty kool event. See their website for more info at therockabillyruckus.com

very year in the middle of June, the Mayfield Village Cruise Night opens for business! This has always been one of the most popular cruises in Northern Ohio! The village partially closes off the intersection of Wilson Mills Road and Route 91 to host a multi parking lot extravaganza that lasts from mid afternoon through the evening complete with two bands, plenty of food vendors and multiple parking lots loaded with Northern Ohio’s finest hot rods and classic cars! (Whew!) That happens on Saturday, June 9, 2018! Classic cars will be able to park in the lots at the SOM Center/Wilson Mills intersection while cars (staging area on Beta Drive). Local restaurants will sell right outside their store. Entertainment will be provided at the Gazebo and bands will also be performing in various locations. Cruise Night is free of charge and any donations collected during the cruise will go to Hillcrest Meals on Wheels. Bring your family and friends and enjoy an incredible event right here in Mayfield Village. Park on Beta Drive or Mount Vernon Square and look for the trolley stops-free of charge sponsored by Hilton Garden Inn Mayfield Village/700 Beta Banquet Conference Center. 1967 Corvette Ken Independence, OH. This is my 1967 Corvette, big block 4 speed, side exhaust car from the factory. It has spent it’s life in Texas, I bought it in 1973, sold it in 1982, then bought it back in 2012. It has had 4 different engines and transmissions in it over the years. In 2016, I had it re-painted to original silver pearl and the following updates: Chevrolet Performance ZZ454 rated at 470 hp, Tremec Street n Strip tko 600 5 speed, power steering, power brakes, vintage air conditioning system, new soft top, new interior. I moved to Ohio in March 2017 and enjoy the classic car scene!

1969 Chevy Townsman Wagon Paul S. Damascus, OH. In April Last year I saw a ‘69 Chevy Wagon in Cruisin’ Times classifieds. I was the first to call the family that was selling it as part of an estate. The car belonged to their 93 year mother who passed away. My wife & I drove to the West Side of Cleveland to see the car the following day. It was a true barn find. It was in a two car garage with boxes and items stacked on it. It was a one owner townsman wagon. 327 3-Speed. The father had bought the car brand new, drove it till he passed away in the early 90’s. His wife took the wagon out monthly to keep it up and running. I purchased it from the original family with 41k miles on it, replaced the brakes, gas, plugs, points, & got it road worthy again. The car came with every stick of documentation, original bill of sale, window sticker, receipt of purchase, & original protecto plate (too bad its not a collectable muscle car!). I have since lowered it & added wheels). We’ve driven it 3000+ miles to shows this summer to Columbus, Pittsburgh, & Wheeling. I have a Z06 Corvette, but this gets more attention then the corvette. We went to the Columbus Zoo show where my grandson, Braydon got pictures with TV personality Dave Kinding, from the show Bitchin’ Rides”! That was a big thrill for him! The Difference between “Cleaning” and “Detailing”
T
he main difference between “cleaning” and “detailing” is how you go about the job as a whole. When one details, they spend time taking care of the places that most often get overlooked when doing a general cleaning. For instance, when cleaning the windows, detailing means rolling them down a couple inches to get the part that rolls up into the frame of the door (If your vehicle has that) so when you roll them down, that one part isn’t dirty. Detailing means pulling the gear shifter back or side to side and getting rid of the crumbs that get stuck in the cracks. Detailing means removing things like skin grease from behind a leather steering wheel as well as hard to reach places in general. By doing a thorough DETAILING job a couple times a year, you can spend more time doing basic cleaning.

Here is a list of some of the hard to reach as well as often overlooked places that may need to be detailed, while you are doing a general cleaning.
Proper Tools: Microfiber cloths and an assortment of good detailing brushes is key. Horse hair nylon, double sided detailing and vent and dash brushes are important to have for the most successful detailing job. Everything else is up to you. Spend a little more time “detailing” and you’ll be able to spend less time “cleaning!
Door jambs: To detail them, means to degrease and then to wax them. By doing this, every time you or someone else opens up your door the vehicle looks cleaner. Glass: To detail your glass means to roll the windows down to clean the top part that get’s rolled up into the frame. By doing this, you won’t have a bunch of dirt at the top making your clean vehicle look dirty. Follow the seat belt: Depending on your vehicle will depend on where

Gear Shifter: Whether you have an automatic or a stick shift, make sure to pull the shifter back or from side to side to remove crumbs and other debris that can get stuck in there. Air Vents: Air vents collect a lot of dust and it shows especially if you haven’t cleaned them in a while. A cloth is good but there is nothing like having a good detail brush to really get into the places you cannot reach. Some mild degreaser, a brush and a cloth is what you’ll need.
