Randomly Speaking Pro Nouncing While listening to a radio commercial the other day voiced by NASCAR legend Richard Petty, he said.... “Hi this is Richard Petty for NTB, it takes “Speed in the Pits” to be a winner...” But, because of his southern accent, I thought he said “speed in the ....(replace the letter “T” in the word pits) with the letter “s”. I almost drove off the road. There’s a lot of those words that look good on paper but once said, can be easily misunderstood. I remember when I was in the radio biz, one of the hottest phrases we wanted to get across to the teenagers (our target audience) was the fact that we played only the “Hits”. It would have been easier to say, “We play the best music”. However, my general manager, who’s marketing background came from, as he told us, having the most lemonade stands when he was 6, required us to say over the intro to a song... “The Biggest Hits only on WGOW”. Say that out loud while talking up the intro to the Rolling Stones “Satisfaction” song and you’ll realize the “t” on the word “Biggest” tends to slide into the “H” on “Hits” and comes out... well you try it and you’ll see why we changed it. But not before slightly altering it to “All the Hits”, which eventually changed to, you guessed it, “The Best Music, WGOW”. Another time, at another radio station, we did a bumper sticker contest that required listeners to stick one of our bumper stickers on their car. Then when our radio station prize patrol was Cruisin’ around town and saw someone with our sticker on the back of their car, we would pull them over and give them a prize! We called it “Stick it and Win!”. That one was my idea. I remember when we got our 2 kittens, our family went through the required naming rights. My wife wanted to call the female cat “Tippy” because she has what looked like flames on her ears. I immediately nixed that idea, as I could just hear one of us yelling for the cat in the backyard.... 6 Cruisin’ Times ~ February 2020
“Here Tippy, Here Tippy”, of course, the “P” would sound like a “T” and, well you get the idea. I remember seeing a TV commercial starring a local celbreity in the business who does the national commercials and lots of block buster movies. The first words out of her mouth were...”Hi, I’m doing everything I can do to fight aids!” I was shocked to learn the unfortunate news. After the 3rd time I heard it, I realized she was saying “Age” and not “Aids”. Understand that she’s a “Pro” and does these things all the time. This becomes some-what of a norm in the industry. While booking rooms for some upcoming long haul Cruise-Ins I noticed the hotels listed were: The Holiday Inn, Red Roof Inn and Tally-Ho. Here’s the thing, in England, tally-ho has to do with a fox hunt. Over here it means there’s a prostitute named “Tally the-ho”. For those of you who are booking your rooms there, I’m sorry, maybe you’ll get lucky. Probably without a doubt, the most confused, most mis-pronounced word for us is “prescription” and “subscription”. One has to do with legal drugs, (that’s the “P” word), while the other has to do with getting a magazine mailed to your home, (thats the “S” word.) I can’t tell you how many people call up our office to renew their “prescription”! Believe it or not, I asked my doctor if he gets people who want to get a new subscription when their pills run out, he said, “All the time!” Then he asked when I was going to send him a free subscription to the Cruisin’ Times. I said, “Right away, but there’s a $20 Co-Pay!” ...course that’s just me randomly speaking.

THE GREATER OHIO GTO CLUB CAR SHOW Photos and story by Joe Secka
W
hile the Pontiac badging was introduced by GM in 1926 and continued through January 2010, the brand disappeared from the GM lineup. However, there is still a large and very dedicated following of the Pontiac and GTO nameplates. John DeLorean successfully designed the GTO (Gran Turismo Omologato) in his vision to promote the Pontiac brand through high performance. The GTO model was built from 1964 through 1974 in the USA and later by GM’s subsidiary Holden in Australia from the 2004 to 2006 model years. On Sunday 09/15/19, The Greater Ohio GTO Club Car Show took place at Toth Buick-GMC in Akron, Ohio. Although the GTO logo was dominant throughout the parking lot, there were also Bonnevilles, Firebirds, Gran Prixs, Tempests, Fieros and LeMans models on hand. Non Pontiac brands were also welcome and there were a few of those to be seen. There was an excellent selection of trophies which were presented to a large number of classes. This was a smaller show but there was plenty of room to accommodate a larger number of vehicles and easy access to the Interstate makes this event one to keep in mind when you set up your 2020 show schedule. W
hen I was heading over to Gearstar Performance Transmissions, I found myself wondering what I would find to put together a great article. Then I met Zack Farah, the owner, and he talked about their business strategy and quality standards. I toured the shop and spoke with the staff and later, when I got back home, I did a good deal of additional research. Well, soon I had enough information to draft a novel. Obviously, that would not fit into a monthly magazine! So, I cut things back to just point out what impressed me most about the business and included a few links for those who would like to check into Gearstar a little further.
More than twenty five years ago, Zack started with Tristar International where they were manufacturing upwards of 100 transmissions and 300 converters on a daily basis. However, the high-performance market piqued his interest. Zack started Gearstar with the goal of building the best high-performance transmissions specialized to the individual needs of the most discerning customers. Zack sums up the attitude of Gearstar this way: A transmission is what your wife has in her minivan. What we are building are horsepower transferring systems with a team made up of the “best of the best” master technicians. Each transmission is handled by a single builder to maintain consistency and quality throughout the build process. Gearstar has only had one owner and the employees have a true passion for what they do. All Gearstar transmissions and converters are built to the highest industry standards, using the highest quality US-made parts and components. Following the build process, each unit is dyno tested for the equivalent of 100 miles, to ensure they are operating perfectly before leaving the shop. This past summer, Gearstar installed a new Axiline 97000 Transmission Dyno powered by a 40HP electric motor generating 450 ft/lb. of torque. This dyno tests transmission line pressure, shift point and response, downshift and converter lockup, stall speed and more all under simulated vehicle load conditions all while recording the results. The standard SuperShifter Pro operator console gives the operator full digital control of both the dyno and the transmission with potentiometers for load and speed. Impressive and amazing to watch to say the least!

On the other side of the shop, there is a second dyno powered by a GM V6 where the same 100 miles of testing is the standard. After passing the dyno testing and certification, each transmission is carefully filled with the recommended fluid to the level where it will not spill out during shipment. The proper amount for fill (in quarts) is packaged with the transmission for installation by the customer. The unit is then sealed and loaded into a box specially designed to carry the valuable product to the custom. As orders come in, they are registered on an incoming chart with unique tag number and then later, when assigned a builder, listed on the in-process chart. From what I observed during my visit, Zack is pretty much a 24/7 customer service rep. He explained that is the only way he wants to take care of his customers’ questions. Gearstar uses Yank Performance Converters and is looking at becoming the East Coast distributor to speed up access to products. Rebuildable cores arrive on a weekly basis and are disassembled, cleaned, bead blasted as necessary and stored on parts shelves for later use. Fluids are recovered and stored to use in their heating system during the winter months. Zack mentioned, “Ya know It’s funny how car people tend to want something from California, because they think if it’s from that state it’s gotta be good, but all the California folks are now calling us here in Ohio!” In fact, the West Coast has been calling him on a regular basis, since he built the trans. for the 2006 Street Rodder Tour coupe and a number of other of high profile cars and trucks and now they’re shipping units across the U.S., Canada and overseas to Japan, Germany, England, and South Africa. Top name builders like Boyd Coddington, Barry Lobeck, Southside Rods, and Mongoose Racing have ordered Gearstar Performance Transmissions.

There are numerous customer reviews on their web page. But I would like to mention a couple that, sort of, jumped out at me. The Leisinger Race Team competes on the Goodguys Auto Cross circuit. Gearstar is the official transmission of Leisinger Race Team and they are the rare competitor using an automatic transmission in this grueling series. Back in 2007 Dave and Karen Leisinger witnessed their first Goodguys autocross competition and were hooked. One of the interesting stories of Goodguys’ Autocross racing season in 2019 is the Leisinger crew. It’s truly a family affair with brothers Josh and Jared leading in the overall points, with their mother, Karen coming in third. At the Kentucky Nationals this year, Jared Leisinger posted the best time of the weekend, followed closely by Josh. However, Josh won the coveted ‘Shootout’ competition at the end of the day, so both had bragging rights for the trip back home.
One thing I know about hot rodders and gearheads in general is they do not like to do things a second time. If the last thing you want to do is remove a failing transmission, then, perhaps, you should give Zack a call at Gearstar Performance Transmissions to see what he can do for you! CLASSIC FUNNY CAR THROW-DOWN TAKES OVER ISLAND DRAGWAY

F
or the past 59 years Island Dragway in Great Meadows, New Jersey has played host to many cool drag races. From Don Garlits clocking the first 200 mile per hour run to many classic funny car match races in the sixties, seventies, and beyond. Now taking it’s place in Island Dragway is the Funny Car Throw-Down a yearly event which brings together some of the best funny cars along the East coast. Chris and Krista Massarella spend the entire year working together with their fellow funny car drivers to come up with the best show that can be produced. Chris and Krista work together with the Island Dragway staff to put on a great one day show which always entertains the fans with long smokey burnouts, classic side by side racing, back up girls and all the style, flavor and color of the hey day of funny car match races. In the battle of the nitro floppers it was Keith Davidson taking the win over Chuck Exton in smokey filled race. Also in the nitro wars Bill Dee brought out his Noreaster Mustang body flopper to make some runs as well. While in the injected alky wars Frank Barnard was the big winner as he defeated Bob Daly in the final. Barnard also picked up the S&W quick reaction time with his great .003 reaction time. The blown alky class was the biggest class with a great field of funny cars doing battle. In the final it was Bob Toth taking the win over Rocky Pirrone in a great side by side battle. Cold hard cash was up for grabs in the first and second round to which ever driver could lay down the best smoke screen in the burnout contest. The burnout contest was sponsored by DJ Safety, M&H Tires and Penn Grade Oil. When all the smoke cleared it was Jon Wall taking home the cash in round one and Joe Morrison getting the burnout bucks in round two, both filling the quarter mile with thick tire burning smoke.

In addition to the funny car classes there were other classes taking part as well at Island Dragway on this great summer day. The East Coast Gassers came out to Island with a great field of classical gassers. When the Gasser wars were done it was Jim Wheeler taking home the win over Dennis Stewart. Mandra was in the house with a giant field of 16 cars doing battle. D&M Engineering served as the day’s sponsor with a Wally going the winner. Bob English was the big winner as he defeated Randy Campbell in the final. NETO came to Island Dragway with two classes filled with car to see who was the top dog on this day. In the NETO Comp class it was Brian English in his 69 Camaro taking the win over Mike Grafas in his 75 Vega. While in the Nostalgia class it was Ged Diemer behind the wheel of his 72 Ford Maverick taking out the 62 Ford Falcon Wagon of Christian Huebner. In addition to all the great on track action Island Dragway put on a great car show. For here in the show there were all shapes, styles and sizes of muscle cars, hot rods, customs, rat rods all sorts of cool stuff for folks to check out. Island Dragway looks towards the future as next year the track will be 60 years old. Once again adding to the rich deep history which is Island Dragway and there is no doubt that the Funny Car ThrowDown will continue to add to that growing history. Chris and Krista Massarella will be working with all of their funny car drivers, owners and fans to continue to put on the best funny car show along the East coast. ~John

SUMMER OF LOVE CAR SHOW A REAL GROOVY SHOW

F
or the summer months of 2019 the Monmouth Museum on the campus of Brookdale Community College in Lincroft, New Jersey has been hosting a great exhibit called Woodstock at 50 Summer of Love. The exhibit takes a look at the musical event called Woodstock. On its 50th Anniversary of Woodstock folks are able to take a look back at the late sixties and all that lead up to the famed concert in up state New York. For those that were around back in 1969 recall how this event took the country by storm as Max Yasgur’s dairy farm was turned into it very own city for three days of peace love and music. As bands from all over the world traveled to this little town to play before hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people. Many recall some of the famous lines from the show such as “The New York Freeway is shut down” or “It’s a Free Concert Now”. So in conjunction with this exhibit at the museum which featured all sorts of cool stuff from the late sixties from concert posters, records, clothing, lava lamps. As well as other great items from magazines, newspapers, photos that all documented the time know as the summer of love and the late sixties. Famed photographer Elliott Landy who was the official photographer of Woodstock had many of his iconic and historic images on display. In addition he had a hard covered book which contained many of these images on display which could be purchased as well. There was an immersive video and audio experience too. So what better way to take this event to another level is to have a car show. All types of groovy and great vintage cars came out to fill the parking lot outside of the museum. The vintage cars showed everyone all the cars and trucks that could be found perhaps taking the ride up to Woodstock before they shut the New York Freeway down. Trophies were given out by Meredith and Classic Metal Productions which put on the show . Vendors of all types were on hand selling all types of cool stuff for people to purchase.

The big winner was the Monmouth Museum which benefited from the show. As all the proceeds were donated to help with the cost of running the Monmouth Museum that does such a great job putting on all the shows during the year. It is very hard to think that Woodstock is fifty years old and all the great bands that performed at the show back on that famous weekend back in 1969. From the Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, The Who and many many more were just some of the performers on that fabled weekend. To sum it all up we borrow a line from Joni Mitchell “By the time we got to Woodstock. We were half a million strong and everywhere was a song and a celebration”. ~ John

Along with the factory window sticker to prove it. The color combination on this car is unbelievable. It draws a crowd wherever it goes. Plenty of G.T.O.s out there but, very few Sprints especially with these options. A true survivor that was not parted out or cloned. This car is solid, straight and sports the original interior. Infamous catch-phrases
D
id this happen to you? Why this popped into my noggin’ I have no idea, but it did, so let’s run with it. When you were growing up can you remember a situation that caused you, or one of your buddies, to say something that ‘grew legs’? By that I mean, something happened (usually something bad, scary, dangerous…but never good) and somebody blurts out something that hits everyone as so funny that it becomes the punchline of the story whenever it’s told over and over. Not only that, but now everyone starts using it whenever similar ‘sketchy’ times pop up (in my case, these popped up pretty often). It becomes a catch-phrase. So, here’s how ours started. In 1974 I was one of the first from our tribe to get a car, so I drove around… a lot. I had a ’69 Firebird and it usually had me and my buddy ‘Bird in it. But other time we have 4 or 5 of us. Usually, ‘Poms’, Timmy, and/ or Rocky. Bird and I made Quigley Avenue a routine stop to take in some street racing. I didn’t race very often (well, except on slow nights) because my car was near stock, and back then you had guys trailering some wild stuff down there, so it was cool just watching the crazy stuff run. One night we took Rocky with us for his first visit. We’re sitting on the hood when Cleveland’s Finest showed up, and a mad scramble to escape was on. I shot straight ahead to what would lead to freedom but another cop car was headed towards us. Plan B. I was going to reach the sidestreet that led up into the Projects before he would, so I took it. There was a tiny alley near the top. The key (as we learned from others) was kill your lights going up towards the top, don’t use brakes (so they don’t see your brake lights) and slide a right into the alley that went downhill…and they might not see you. Sure enough, the police kept going straight (whew!). As I mentioned, this was Rocky’s first taste of Quigley street races. From the cop heading towards us, turning off my lights, then sliding into the alley…at everyone of these all we could hear was Rocky yelling out, ‘Oh god, we’re gonna die!’ During all of this, Bird and I were laughing hysterically. Not that I wasn’t pretty nervous but the way Rocky kept yelling, it was cracking us up!
Well, we made our way back to the neighborhood. A bunch of the other guys were on the steps of the schoolyard we hung out at. Once we joined them, I said that the racing got broken up. Cue Rocky!, he went into all sorts of detail of what happened and telling everyone the parts where he said, ‘Oh god we’re gonna die’. His over-the-top description had everyone rolling. What made it even funnier is that he kinda’ said the 2nd part of it like it’s all one word…weregonnadie is how it came out. And that started it. From then on, it was adopted as a catch-phrase. Any hairy situation was sure to have someone saying ‘weregonnadie’. And how come it seemed that I was usually involved in these? I blame it on Pontiac. Whenever we see each other and someone starts on one of the ‘we’re gonna die’ moments, it involves my Firebird, ’65 GTO, or the ’69 Grand Prix SJ. Yep, Pontiac’s fault. This past summer Brooklyn had Home Days and a car show. Bumped into Rocky for the first time in years. After general catching up, I waited for it…not one to disappoint, Rocky said, “Man, I still think about that time in your GTO on I-77. I’ve told my kids the story. Told them that all I could say was, ‘oh god, we’re gonna die’.”
I told him that I can’t believe that he and the others still have those times burned in their memories. We laughed and joked that, yeah we have those but can’t remember where we put the remote! Well obviously, we didn’t die and it looks like these times will stay with us until we actually do check out. Ahh, Good Times! This trigger any for you too?
