Randomly Speaking Coffee Mugs
I
think of myself as a professional coffee drinker. I don’t drink gourmet coffee, I’ve never step foot in a Starbucks, and I don’t own a coffee bean grinder. I just drink enough of the damn liquid booster to know the difference between good and bad coffee. I can tell when coffee has been sitting around a restaurant for more than an hour and I can tell the difference between regular and decaf. And because I’m a professional coffee drinker, I know where all the bathrooms are in the trig-state area. If you’re a coffee drinker, you know one solid fact - whatever you drink your coffee out of makes all the difference in the world and can make coffee taste good or bad. In the past, styrofoam was the cup of choice when you were on the go. Now places use the designer paper cups with the special sleeves so you don’t burn yourself. I think the gas stations just want to avoid law suits like the one McDonalds gets. Speaking of Micky D’s, I like it when they offer to put cream and sugar in the coffee for you. If there’s anything worse than trying to put all those ingredients into a scalding cup of coffee while your in the car, then having it spill on you, is a task only a few successfully completed. Most ‘Pros’ turn to using a “travel mug”. Technology has provided a bevy of metal wonders guaranteed to safely transport a hot beverage, but this technology comes with a cost. After three uses, like paper, your coffee tastes like whatever material your mug is made of. This means I’m paying two bucks for the privilege of not being scaled by a cup of coffee, but having it taste like an old Boyd Coddington billet wheel. I also forget to bring the damn thing into the house, so in the winter I have at least 3 mugs with various levels of frozen mixture sitting in my car cup holders. Drinking coffee out of a glass might be “high society” but we all know it makes the coffee taste “thin” and un-robust. Coffee should be served in an official mug or cup, not a glass. The true coffee cup, the kind your mother brought out when you had company over, only holds 6oz, and by the time you load it up with sweetener and cream, 3 sips later you’ve gotta re-load. Hardly anyone drinks from those dainty cups unless your at a high class restaurant or invited to Aunt Gertrudes. Mostly we drink out of the typical logo/advertising mugs. You can get them made with pictures of your favorite hobby, logos, and add cute sayings. We even had official Cruisin Times mugs a while back, which we gave away to our clients. Collectors usually keep their favorite ones ondisplay, but most, like me, stock them away in cupboards by stacking them on top of each other. Some people like the big coffee mugs for their hot chocolate or tea, which can range up to 32 oz. If you think about it, the average human stomach holds 1 quart (32oz), which means the next person you see carrying one of those big mugs probably knows where all the bathrooms are in the city and spends more time stopping to use them then actually getting any work done. 6 Cruisin’ Times ~ February 2021
Many people become attached to their “favorite” coffee cup; others actually collect them (me). Actually, I really don’t collect them in the true sense of the word, I mean, I don’t go out on purpose seeking coffee mugs, they sort of find me. The kind I prefer is the ceramic style, usually 8oz to 12oz that are adorned with logos and things. I have a whole bunch of those that I drink from depending on my mood. If it’s a Friday or Saturday and I’m in the mood for steak, I always drink from the Natoma Cafe mug that was given to me when I went to a famous steak restaurant in Newark, Ohio. Every time I sip from it, I think of how delicious their steak was as it was brought to the table sizzling on a platter. If I’m in a nostalgic mood and my mind wanders back to the day when I was he voice of radio and TV stations, I drink from my FM 99 Lite Rock out of Michigan, or the Ohio Lottery Cash Explosion mug, the only plastic mug I own. I guess it’s plastic so the lottery would save money to beef up its winnings. I’ve got a Fox Sports mug which I hold the distinction of being their first announcer. The mug has some of that trick heat imprinting that illuminates when there’s hot liquid in it. It’s also neat because you know right away when you’re coffee is cooling off. If there’s 3 things I can’t stand it’s wet toilet paper, people who waste my time, and cold coffee. There are also the souvenir type mugs from vacations. I’ve got my official Luray Caverns (Virginia) mug, my Don Garlits Drag Racing Museum mug, and a IHRA mug that was given to me at a press conference. I’ve got an Elvis mug given to me by my buddy Bobby Lowther, who visited the famed Memphis museum. It’s got my name on it and it’s signed by Elvis. I just wonder when Elvis had the time to sign mugs between all the concert dates, but I guess he did. I also have a mug that says, “empty” on the inside bottom of it, so you know when you’re out of coffee. I really appreciate someone being so thoughtful to let me know when I’ve run out of coffee. Continuing to swallow with nothing going down your throat also works. My favorite mugs are the true diner style mugs. Those are the big, thick ones, typically in a cream color that really bring out that true taste of a good cup of coffee. I’ve got one from the Steel Trolley Diner in Lisbon, Oh. I think that anyone who owns a diner has to have their logo on a mug to make it official. ...course that’s just me randomly speaking. ~ John Shapiro

GARY DODRILL’S WIDETRACK BARN FIND Photos & words by Joe Secka
Gary Dodrill’s Widetrack Barn Find Photos and story by John McCartney
G
ary Dodrill, a tool & die maker with General Motors, is a long time Pontiac aficionado. His second car was a 1966 GTO and he has stuck by the Pontiac brand ever since. Gary mentioned, at last count, he has owned 24 cars with the Pontiac badging. In 2008, when the cruising hobby became quite popular, Gary decided to look for something to fit that bill. Searching on EBay, he was able to locate a 1964 Impala in New York. At this time, his son, Russ was serving as an Airborne Combat Medic in Iraq. Russ’ wife, Stephanie, was also serving but with the Army in Afghanistan. Russ would call home after every mission to let his parents know he was safe. During one call from Baghdad, Gary mentioned that he was thinking about the Chevy Impala he had located and asked Russ if he would be able to check it out online. Accessing the internet in Iraq at that time required waiting in line. Well, two hours later Russ called back but had additional news. While checking out the Impala, he had located a 1960 Pontiac Star Chief 2-door post coupe and it was located near Youngstown which was just over an hour away from Gary. It must have been love at first sight because Gary purchased the Pontiac in August of 2008.
8 Cruisin’ Times ~ February 2021
The car had 29,000 original miles but came with an unusual history. From what Gary was told, the original owner was in a hit-and-run accident when the car had about 27,000 miles on it. The owner took the car over to Pennsylvania to be repaired. When repairs were complete, he brought the car back home, parked it in the garage and never drove it again. The second owner bought the Star Chief in 1996 and owned the car for about eight years. He took the car all apart installing new weather-stripping in the doors, new brake lines, etc. The car has never had any rust so that was definitely not an issue. In the meantime, he and his wife had three kids and bought a larger home. Unfortunately, he never checked the length of the garage and it was not long enough to hold this Pontiac! He then sold it, still in pieces, to Lorenzo “Killer” Brooks who races Pro-Mod Mustangs. Brooks put the car back together and had it painted. He put low profile tires on it and painted the bumpers green and the grille and taillight bezels black. He eventually put the car up for sale on EBay and, through Russ’ Middle East connection; Gary was introduced to this sort-of “barn find!” The painted chrome absolutely had to go! Keystone Chrome in Brooklyn, Ohio brought back the original shine. Gary put his Pontiac back on a “proper stance” with Summit Racing Legend Series 15” wheels and Coker 235x75 R15 rubber. There are ghost flames across the hood and fenders while sixties style pin stripping adds a unique custom flair to the hood, doors and tail panel. Detailing on Updated daily at www.cruisintimesmagazine.com
the exterior and interior returned the car to the “near original” masterpiece that it was when new. Gary even located, through EBay again, floor mats with original Pontiac logos. The original 389 V8 puts out 215 hp and drives through a four-speed Hyrdra-Matic making it a pleasure to drive down the highway. Gary has made good on his dream to go cruising. He and his wife, Sheri, have trekked down to the Rod Run Doo Wop in Charleston, WV, the Goodguys Nationals in Columbus, the Fabulous Fifties Fling in Sugar Creek and the Pontiac Nationals at Summit Motorsports Park. He was also invited to present with the John Shapiro Cruisin’ Times All Stars during the 2018 Piston Power Show. The Pontiac Star Chief regularly transports Gary and Sheri to local weekly cruises and just about anywhere on summer weekends. The odometer now registers 54,000 miles! The long range connection through Iraq and Russ’ EBay search has proven to be amazing. BTW: Russ, his wife, and their three sons are now living within eyesight of Gary’s home. Keep on looking, those “barn finds” are still out there! You can check out Gary’s story by searching “Dodrill 1960 Star Chief” on YouTube. That’s all I’ve got - Joe

Kirkwood Cruise A Real Car Lovers Treasure Hunt Photos and words by John McCartney
O
nce a year the four mile long stretch of the Kirkwood Highway is turned into what can only be described as Treasure Hunt for car lovers of all ages and backgrounds. You see the Kirkwood Highway is located in and around the little cities of Wilmington and Newark Delaware. The entire get together is put on by the fine folks at Cruisin in Not A Crime under the leadership of John Presley. Presley works hard at getting this show going all thru the year and as soon as one year’s show is done work starts on the next year’s edition. Way back in the days the hot rod car scene would bring their cars out to the Kirkwood Highway and cruise the four mile long stretch. During their journey up and down the Kirkwood Highway car lovers would make stops at various fast food places such as Gino’s, Jack in the Box and many more sadly most of these places are long gone and been replaced by others in today’s world. While many things have changed there are still reminders of those good ole days. A old school Pep Boys Auto Parts store complete with concrete full size figures of Manny, Moe and Jack sitting right on top of the old building. Not far away folks could see an original full size Arby’s Cowboy hat sign sitting outside of a slightly updated Arby’s. In these days folks seem to hang out at the Hooters restaurant which seems to be at the end or start of the cruise depending upon which way you might be going. As you travel along the Kirkwood Highway it seems everyone has their own special location to check out the cruise action. Car clubs all pick their viewing points and all the members

gather together for all the fun. 90 year old James Knott brings out his cool 1957 Chevy and joins his fellow Soul Cruisers car club members who all come out to spend the day together. Corvettes can be found all in one place while Mopars are in another and off course Fords have their spot as well. The parking lot near the Hooters fills up very fast as it is one of the prime spots to check out all the action along with being able to get some great food and drink. For fans you almost need to have a car lovers treasure map and see how many cars you can find along the way and check them off their list. This year the world famous Red Baron owned by John Sbrigato was parked outside of the Hooters Restaurant this car built by famed car builder Chuck Miller. The Red Baron was joined by a crazy Beverly Hillbillies looking car in front of the Hooters as well. A bunch of Beverly Hillbillies look alike could be seen driving the car up and down the Kirkwood Highway making for a very interesting sight for sure. Everyone that comes out for the most part behave themselves and just enjoy the whole event. For you see the Kirkwood Highway is never closed during the cruise so folks who wish to cruise their rides have to obey and share the highway with the folks who are just trying to get from one place to another. As you can tell the whole day is a great money maker for all those who have food and drink places along the route. Some folks eat inside while many others bring their own food and drink and sit along the highway up on the hill to catch all the cool cruising action. So if you found yourself in and around the Delaware area during the first few weeks in the month of August and you see all these cool cars parked along the four mile route of the Kirkwood Highway. Well, you should pull over find a place to park and get ready to go on your very own car lovers treasure hunt of your own. For the Kirkwood Highway Cruise is just that a treasure hunt for folks of all ages and backgrounds. You can bet that John Presley is hard at work as we speak making plans to make the next edition of the Kirkwood Cruise all that much special and better. ~ John

T
his is one of those unusual stories that can be told any number of ways. Here’s one! The source began back in 2016 and finally came to fruition in the middle of the year of the wretched Covid19 Pandemic... 2020!!! Who’d guess that something wierd would happen this year? I found an unfamiliar folder on my computer with 66 excellent photos of hot rods, trucks, classics and some very unusual machines of all kinds that looked vaguely familiar, but upon inspection I realized I didn’t recognize any of them... except for the last one. This was a picture of my neighborhood friend Ray Kaluga and his wife Patty! Hmmmm. So, I called Ray and after some questions and comments, we deduced that this was a group of shots that his older brother Joe had taken at a big cruise down in Butler County in southern Ohio! Oh yeahhhh!!!! As luck would have it, his brother Joe Kaluga is a life long car guy (originally from Willoughby Hills circa late 50s to early 60s) that always has interesting projects going on. I (kind of) remembered that Joe visited Ray one time at the Eastlake Thursday night cruise and we talked for a while about his extremely modified ‘48 Crosley with the V12 Jaguar engine. As the conversation went on, he mentioned an interesting cruise he had photos of and that’s where that folder full of great shots came from. Well, I guess it’s not much of a story, but the best part is, now you have two links to occupy some of your winter time! First is the 2016 46th Annual Cinci Street Rod and Cycle Run in Butler County, Ohio: miamivalleynovas.com/Cincy%20 Street%20Rods%202016/. And also the rest of the shots that Joe took that I didn’t have room to include in this article: dustmanart.smugmug.com/2016-CRUISES-7-CAR-SHOWS/ Cinci-Street-Rods-46th-Annual-Rod-Bike-Run/. Check both of them out! Thanks and enjoy the pics!

Dave’s 1970 Plymouth Broadview Hts, OH. It was not an original Superbird, it started life as a plain 1970 Plymouth Road Runner. A guy in Florida transformed it into a Superbird tribute. It was a good looking car when I bought it but it had many mechanical issues. I spent a lot of time and money fixing those issues and now it runs as good as it looks. To say this car draws a lot of attention would be an understatement. It really turns heads everywhere we go. It was hard getting the picture in front of the Pure station in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park as everyone was coming up to take their own pictures of it, but sharing it with others is the great part of this hobby. Mopar or no car!

Color My World
O
K, so here we are. It’s been nearly an entire year of this ‘Covid-19’ business. It rose, then decreased, then-it got colder and it spiked again. For the most part, people do what needs to be done (masks, distancing, testing, etc.) and we plug away, but let’s face it, it takes its toll on us. For me, I have to find some source of ‘normalcy’ wherever I can to keep me from going bonkers. My boo-boo’s from the surgery and the treatments are all in the past so naturally, the first place I needed to hit for some peace of mind was the Choppers garage and the ’37 Nash. Some folks have their ‘Zen Gardens’, others go for meditation or yoga. Just let me work on something to move this project along and I can blot out all the ‘muckety-muck’ going on outside. It’s ‘Garage-Zen’. Some of you already know this, but the Nash is really my wife’s car (or will be) so some key features needed her input or let’s face it, if I just make the call…it’ll be wrong, guaranteed. For the most part we’ve covered what she wants – near stock appearing, use the stock seat frames, A/C, V-8, auto., P/S, P/B, P/W…got it.
But here is where my ‘Zen’ is taking it on the chin…COLOR! Granted, I’m a ways off from painting body panels, but I do want to start assembling the dash. And since the dash will be the body color…I need paint. And, I need to know the color! We have been looking over colors for the last few years, and its changed from candyapple red to brandywine to black-cherry, which is where I thought we’d finalized. No such luck. Brandywine-too red. Black cherry-too dark. So now we’re searching for the magic color between these two. Looks like a sit-down with the PPG big book is in order. But know what? This doesn’t really bug me. Why?

So, whatever works for you, use it. There’s no telling when this mess ends, so let’s just do what we need to, to keep sane through it all…and stay safe. - Mike

David Chandler trusted us with his 1936 Auburn boat tail speedster for a complete restoration. When he bought it, the car was a complete mess. We disassembled it, stripped completely down, and Dave left the color choices up to us and now she is a beautiful machine. What a head turner it is too. This baby will draw attention. Thanks Dave

Cruisin’ in Westlake, July 4, 2020 Photos and words by Joe Secka
T
he Fourth of July has been a great day for car cruises in recent years. While all of the patriotic reasons area an incentive to schedule a show, the recent Covid-19 have been a constant deterrent and has caused numerous events to be cancelled or, at least, postponed. The city of Westlake decided to move forward with their 31st Annual Charity Classic Car Show at Clague Park. It was a hot and sunny day as vehicles arrived. There was judging and trophies for entries 1900-1980. Dash plaques were handed out to the first 150 arrivals. A huge grassy spaced the vehicles with plenty of room to roam around and view. Music, a Martial Arts Demonstration, picnic areas, family activities and games were also offered for those in attendance. The charities sharing proceeds included the St Baldrick’s Foundation for Pediatric Care and the Westlake Community Center. Keep this show in mind for your 2020 schedule of cruising! That’s all I have - Joe
