Randomly Speaking New Years Proverbs...

ach year I look back on the years “doings”, good or bad. I couldn’t help but think about the overuse of proverbs and truisms. I also think many of them don’t apply like they once did. Last year I was stopped by a policeman for speeding and I said, “just because my truck is lowered, has mag wheels and looks fast, you shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover!” He said “you’re right, but you were still going 80 in a 65 zone!” Take for example the proverb, “Haste makes waste”. Baloney. Haste usually saves time. Most of us move too slowly. The fastest workers are the people who know how to do the job best. I can fuss with a little job for days, but when I get a professional to do the job, it’s done in half the time. Haste only makes waste if you don’t know what you’re doing. “To the victors, go the spoils”. I guess that used to be true in ancient times when one nation invaded another and took what it wanted, but it doesn’t seem true any longer. Germany and Japan lost the war, but they’re doing better than the winners. I think a new proverb should be “To the victors go the headaches.” “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks”. It may be conceit on my part, but I think I’ve learned a lot about publishing and marketing over the years, especially learning about these new computers, software and viruses. We all get set in our ways, but some of the ways we get set in are right. We refuse to learn new tricks sometimes because we’re satisfied with the old ones we know. You can teach an old dog a new trick if you want to. My son Andy taught me all the new tips and tricks 6 Cruisin’ Times ~ January 2019

in the digital design world. I’m one of the old dogs who learned a lot of new ways to roll over! “Seek and ye shall find”. Not in our garage. My family sent me out there to seek for years and so far all I was able to find are excuses why I cant find anything. I think the new proverb should be “Seek and ye shall waste time”, which goes along quite nicely with the “Haste makes waste”! On the other hand, I like, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. I happen to like the ones that have weathered the storm quite nicely, especially in the car show world. I have seen some cars, lets say “not so good looking cars” that, if the owner had stopped customizing it 15 minutes before it was finished, it would have looked great, but for some reason they felt compelled to add gold air cleaners to go with the gold looking (actually polished brass) radiator just because they thought adding more would be better. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and the beholder of that particular car is going to be-holding on to that car for a long time! “Crime doesn’t pay.” I used to think that was a truism. But looking back on all my speeding tickets over the years, it seems obvious that crime truly does pay - as municipal courts and their employees are doing quite nicely thanks to people like me. ...course that’s just me randomly speaking.

OTIE’S TOPOLINO - TAKE TWO

Miller, it would mean a sense of accomplishment for his over two year project to bring this legendary car back to life.

In addition to operating Otie’s Automotive performance shop (1955-1988) in Akron, OH, Otie Smith won the NHRA Nationals in 1959 & 1960 and set a number of National records. His son, Bill, started racing at the age of 16 and a 1937 Fiat Topolino was his first ride. Bill raced the Fiat in 1962 and then switched to a 23-T Roadster for ’63 and ’64, winning the Nationals in 1964 while setting records along the way. Bill moved to a C/Dragster in 1963

hen a Fiat Topolino pulls up to the starting line, many might suggest this is one of the wildest looking race cars from the altered/roadster/FED genre of drag racers. If the Fiat was painted red with Otie’s Automotive on the door, it would likely bring back some fond memories for old timers in the Midwest. For Jason

and won the Nationals in 1964. Otie’s racing career spanned fifteen years (1951-1965) while Bill raced from 1962-1972. Jason Miller has been friends with Bill Smith for more than 25 years and wanted to build the car as a tribute to Otie’s Automotive. He found a badly rusted body in Painsville, OH and added body parts from Sweden, Germany and the Netherlands. About one year into the build, they located the original body and those wheel tubs were incorporated into this build. A fiberglass nose was added up front to match the original car. Building to the

Photos & Words by Joe Secka original 1962 design was a central focus point for Jason with safety upgrades being the only major deviation. The body was dropped onto boxed Model-A rails with a ’40 Ford front axle using split wishbones. Steering is through a Corvair box and power drives out back to a 1959 Olds/Pont rear end utilizing 35 spline axles. Contact with the ground is achieved with American Rebel wheels and Moroso Drag Specials up front and Rader Dragster (29x10x15) on the rear. Crowman Fab assisted with the custom roll

cage designed to meet NHRA 8.50 certification standards. Fuel runs through Hilborn 2-port injectors, a Don Hampton 671 blower and an Edelbrock manifold feeding a 327 CID Chevy which is fired with a Joe Hunt Magneto. The result is an estimated 700 HP. The engine was built by Jason, a tool & die maker, and Bill with machine work completed by C.A.M.S. of Canton, OH. Gordon Stoney built the Turbo 350 and an aluminum driveshaft ties everything together. Jason is quick to point out Ed Iskendarian’s

autograph on the blower belt guard. Greg Skelton applied the Amoco red paint (yes, the gas station outfit) and lettering was brushed on by L. D. Spurgeon. The driver’s compartment was fitted with a Kirkey Seat utilizing a RCI 6-point harness, a custom dash with S&W gauges and tach and a Superior 500 steering wheel. One important last piece was added to match the original build. Since Bill Smith was only sixteen years old when he first climbed into the Topolino (Italian for “Little Mouse”), Bill’s sister and cousin

removed the horn from his bike and mounted it at the roofline of the driver’s compartment. Kinda kool, don’t you think? Jason says this project would not have been possible without a huge assist from Rob Gayner, John Denslow, Jim Buckingham, Greg Skelton, Mike Clute, Gordon Crowe, Carey Gaynor and Nick Lanzaretta. Jason’s racing experience was previously limited to a little street racing back in the day. So, he is taking it slow in refining

the engine tuning as he gains more laps down the track. Jason and the Topolino frequent local car shows/cruises and make appearances at nostalgia drag racing events. The Fiat attracted a lot of attention at the I-X Center’s Piston Power Show, The Meltdown Drags, and The Rock’N’Race Reunion this past year. Although Bill & Jason talked about finding or recreating one of the cars for twenty years, the truck kind of got the ball rolling. Jason bought the Ford pickup in 2014. He took it over to Bill’s house and they found some old photos of a similar truck the shop used and the build was on!

SPOOKS OUT RACEWAY PARK Photos and Story by John McCartney

On a sunny but windy cool day Raceway Park drag strip was once again filled with all sorts of cool cars with the running of the Halloween Hot Rod Hootenanny. The famous Raceway Park drag strip in Englishtown, New Jersey was the perfect backdrop for this spooky event. Fans could walk along the drag strip that played host to many famous races and racers over the years. Once could sense the spirits of these super stars as one checked out the vintage muscle cars, crazy hot rods, vintage race cars. The two real deal Munster Cars owned by John Sbrigato in the form of the Dragula and the Munster Koach were on hand looking for a place to race and relive the famous Hot Rod Herman episode of the famed TV show. You want TV cars they were all here from a number of Dukes of Hazzard Chargers, the Hazzard County Police Cruiser all could be seen and enjoyed. Tommy G brought out his real deal vintage ice cream even though it might have been a slight bit chilly for ice cream on this day. Bob Ida brought out his classic gasser to display and fired it up to give all the fans a big thrill. George Gudat had his barn find Bit of a Bear gasser on display. Gudat had just found and purchased this original car from the Harris family who have owned and raced the car for years before it was tucked away just like it looked back way back when. Dead Man’s Curve Car Club made it out to the show with a great collection of the member’s rides. During the day Wolfman Jerry Burst played all the classical rock and roll music from back in the day. Two great bands the Redliners and Rockabilly Roadhouse entertained everyone with some really cool live music during the run of the event. 18 Cruisin’ Times ~ January 2019

ohn Baker and I were talking one day in his garage and he briefly mentioned that he wanted to start having a (fairly) regular cruise at his building in Hudson. He owns John’s Tree Service and has a great building (new at the time of this meeting). One of us suggested Friday evenings would be a great night to cut loose for the weekend! After a while he had what he knew would be a winner. One Friday each month of the main summer season and have all of his friends over for some rowdy fun! He wasn’t kidding!!! John did some grilling (hot dogs, sausage, hamburgers, etc.) and had other folks bring a variety of food to share with everyone else. And, then there was this idea of the burnouts! He had a brand new concrete parking lot at the building that needed some “coating”! Lots of tires would do the job just fine!!! Plenty of his close friends were more than willing to do their best to shed some tread! For two years (2008 and 2009) he hosted a bunch of burnfests in his parking lot and I’ve never seen so much fun and action at a cruise anywhere! He did just what he wanted... have a great old-fashioned cruise where people got together to show off the true nature of the fantastic machines they had built! Outstanding job John!

Sandy’s ‘57 Ford Fairlane North Royalton, OH. This 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 2-door club Sedan, known as “Angel Baby” began her journey in Oklahoma. She made her way to Massachusetts where she underwent a frame-off restoration, including power disc brakes. Her exceptional exterior paint of Colonial White and Cactus Green is carried through to her custom interior, making her a true looker. 32 Cruisin’ Times ~ January 2019

Powered by a 352 Police Interceptor V8, and a C-6 Auto, she traveled to Michigan, where she resided for a few years, and finally made her way to Sandy’s house in Ohio. An old school custom, she is, but doesn’t like to be called ‘old’. My wife and I had a ‘41 Plymouth for 8 years that we enjoyed showing. We recently traded it for this Prowler, which was located in Charlotte, NC. In 20 years we have seen only one Plymouth Prowler at any car shows, so we decided we wanted something different to show. It is painted dark metallic blue with a blue convertible top with black leather upholstery and carpet. There were approximately 11,000 made in 6 years. (97-02) First made by Plymouth for 3 years, then Chrysler for 3. The Prowlers were made, painted, and pin stripped by hand. (It took 100 people 1 & 1/2 days to built one.)

This car has a aluminum frame & body plus a 3.5 liter V6 engine. 253 HP & 4 speed auto. These cars had $40,000 MSRP, 12 factory colors, and was designed by Indy Car Builders. Goodyear specially developed 17” front and 20” rear wheels with built-in run-flat capability. (No Jack or Spare tires). The car has 4 serious disc brakes, power windows, rear glass window with defroster, 39’ turning diameter with rack & pin steering. A Hot Rod Without Hot Rod Problems! With the exception of getting in & out (as it sits VERY low) it is a fun car to own, show, and drive!

Good Things Rarely “Just Happen” This popped into my ‘melon’ after a recent Choppers club meeting. We were discussing our plans for the 2019 Choppers Rod and Custom Show, which by the way, will be April 12-14th at our same location, The Soccer Sportsplex on Lorain Road in N. Olmsted OH. What drove me to the title for this piece is thinking of how many times I’ve had folks come up and say, “after doing this all these years it must be a quick & easy thing, ya’ know, “automatic”. BWAHAHAHA!!! If they (you) only knew. Well, to be honest, it’s more of a yes and no answer. The basic format for the show is pretty well laid out (the big picture) BUT, getting all the pieces together and trying to improve it? Um, no. After each show, usually in May/June we toss around a bunch of thoughts. You know, what went well, what didn’t, what really sucked and how can we improve the show. Fortunately, most of the things we see that need work, you don’t see. Now, hunker in the bunker with about 20 of us and try and ‘fix stuff’. Picture a room full of Choppers, all voicing their opinions that could drown out an open-header car and, well, yeah it can be pretty crazy. But we sort it out, quiet down and start getting good ideas to try for the next show. If each show can go a little smoother than the last, well, I’ll take that. There’s a boatload of other things that come up, too. More advance advertising…How/Where? More new sponsors…How/Where? Agreeing on what the Feature for the show will be, and basically, agreeing on Anything, Heh-Heh. Getting artwork for posters and shirts earlier every year. Toss in ‘who will do what’ and,

yes, as you can see, the show is pretty ‘Automatic’ (insert heavy sarcasm here). Don’t get me wrong, the show is a labor of love for us and I have a blast over the 3 days and love chatting with everyone. But it’s another example of something that people seem to enjoy but see and experience the good stuff without seeing (and shouldn’t see) the efforts it takes to bring that to them. Tons of examples surround us on a routine basis. One, is staring right back at you. Yes, we all get our copies of Cruisin’ Times, read it, take information and resources from it and some hang on to the copies. But we rarely give a thought to what it takes to make this magazine come to life in our hands every month. Heck, I figured this magazine has been humming along for so many years that it’s just ‘Automatic’. Hope you’ll use this little thought in the future. All those clubs and organizations putting on shows go through similar work as the Choppers. All magazines, same as Cruisin’ Times. And on, and on. So, after voicing this to paper I came away with more appreciation for a lot of things that I enjoy but took for granted because they just seem to happen Automatically. Have a Great Holiday Season.

1952 Chevy 3600 4x4. Runs great. Rebuilt automatic 700-R4 trans, rebuilt 350 V 8, rebuilt transfer case. Have paper work for all. New BF Goodrich size 35X12.50-15 tires with newly powder coated rims. Have original owners manual, bill of sale, and some original service receipts from the early 50’s. Clean title and it is registered as a 1952 Chevy Truck. Just about everything has been rebuilt or replaced with new (carburetor, water pump, radiator, alternator, battery, gauges, transmission, transfer case etc. I have a long list of parts and accessories that have been added to this truck. New Warn locking hubs. New style working gauges. Converted to 12 volt. Power steering, power disc brakes, tilt chrome column. Fuel tank located to the rear using original filler hole.
