Randomly Speaking Extra Stuff
H
ere we are again in another economic downturn and it reminds me of the last crash when they said we had too much extra stuff. The banks let us get too much credit/loans, and we in turn bought more stuff. I remember when my I started looking through all our excess and sure enough, we’ve got like 2 of everything. Do you? If you do, I guess that makes us average, because according to the census bureau 33 million Americans own 2 cars or more. OK, so we’re probably a little overboard in that area if you count all the hot rods. I will say that TV’s are something we had way too many of. Lots of people have TV’s in every room, I guess we can’t stand being too far from finding out the next news headline or if the Browns lost again. Sometimes I can’t find a decent channel to watch and I wind up just using the TV for noise. I donated all of our old TV’s except the one in the bathroom thats attached to the TP dispenser. It’s thereto mask another noise. Coats are another thing we have too many of. I’ve got em with logos, without logos, long, short, some for the fall, some for the winter, and other for the spring swap meet season. I tried donating some, but wound up putting each one on ‘one more time’, sort of a “good bye old friend” thing. As I took them off I could faintly hear one arm saying to the other, “Wave good bye to Johnny give him one last hug!” Pens and pencils. How many pens and pencils does one need? Let me ask you another question, when was the last time you actually used a pencil and could find your pencil sharpener if you had had to? I’ve always liked pencils, but what’s become of those new erasers? When I was a kid you could neatly erase something and no one could tell. Nowadays after a month, they’re as hard as a rock. Then when you go to use them it smears itself all over the paper. I think that’s why I use a pen.
I have friends who have had their kitchen done over a few years ago and they had two stoves put in. I guess they’re hedging their bet if the electricity goes out, and they’ll cook on the other. Actually they eat out more than I do, so my guess is they bought it to impress their neighbors. I know another couple who has two refrigerators. I like that idea. One could be for fresh food, and the other for leftovers. Broken computers are another thing we have too many of. I use ‘em up like a race engine, but racers don’t keep their busted blown up motors. Why is it that we keep broken computers? Do we really think some criminal is going put that old heap back together just to look at our old files? We’ve got far too many telephones too. Actually, no one actually says the word “telephone” anymore. We usually say “phone” or “cell”. I’ve got a whole bunch of broken phones stored away. I fear that if the one that is actually working, suddenly breaks, I could go to the “phone bone yard” and put together something to make one workable phone. I’ve got old dial types, early push button, 2 and 3 line models and even the kind that has it’s own answering machine built into it. But I can’t remember how tomato it play the damn messages. Most of the messages are from solicitors anyway. All of my friends call me only ‘cell’, which is why I cancelled my hard line phone in the first place. I’ve figured that I was paying close to $40/ month ($480/yr) just to let phone solicitors call me. If everybody cancelled their hard-line’s we’d put those guys out a lot of business in a heartbeat. Speaking of heartbeats, I know you’re thinking “If I had to dial 9-1-1, they’d know where I was with a hard line. Trust me, if I have a heart attack, it’ll be at McDonalds and I’ve registered all of their phone numbers into my cell phone data bank speed dial - which works out to be much faster than 9-1-1.
Some pens look good, but don’t write very well, others are ugly but write with ease. Everybody says an editor must have a lot of pens because they’re always writing. Actually, I type everything now, so that blows that theory. I’m supposed to be throwing all of my pens out along with my collection of coffee mugs. I’ve decided to put all of the pens in the coffee cups, that way I have the best of both worlds.
So far I’ve saved $480, which is more than enough to re-order HBO that I cancelled to help pay for gas. I feel much better now.
A lot of families have multiple bank accounts for no good reason. I guess these days, the more accounts you have, the more money you think you have. Thanks to Fanny May and Freddy Mac we all know the answer to that.

his show boasted easy access from I-71, I-76, I-77, and I-271 with plenty of room for everyone to settle in for a great time. The weather certainly cooperated for this midday event as well. Frank and Cookie from LaManna Presents filled the air with tunes while trophies and door prizes were something to take home. Akron-Medina Corporate Park was even spacious enough for those who had trailered race cars to the show. A dozen or so sponsors helped with the event support and background work that is always so essential for a show of this caliber! Jeff Hose, Jared Baschko, April Hose and Robert Meisch were the organizers behind this one. Jeff said, “HOLY CRAP!! What an AWESOME turnout today!! Thank you Steve Christian, Chad Smith, Jared S. McFadden and Mackenzie Christian for helping out at the front entrance and getting everyone pointed in the right direction.” Dave Kish and the gang over at Burnt Rubber Garage knocked it out of the park with the 50/50 earning a nice for a good cause. All proceeds were donated to veteran foundations. Out of towners pulled in from New York, Michigan, Illinois, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. Over 600 cars, trucks and bikes were on display! What a great and welcome turnout with the Covid-19 pandemic having taken a toll on the early season for the cruising hobby. This gathering was a more than pleasant change of pace! Keep this one in mind for your 2021 cruising plans. ~ Joe

he sun was turned on high as vehicles of all types and nameplates pulled into downtown Warren, Ohio for the Sunrise Inn Car Show. The show has been around for about twenty years and was scheduled to run from 11am through 4pm. But, the parking lots were filling up a couple of hours beforehand. Food was available from both food vendors and the Sunrise Inn. Music was provided by DJ Jeff of the Record Connection and a collection of giveaways, door prizes, 50/50 raffle, dash plaques and trophies were provided. When it was all said and done, the car count was at the 350 level plus those that had not registered. The selection ranged from 1920-era Ford Model Ts to the “Bumble Bee” Camaro from the “Transformers” movie franchise, Nitroflier II, a nostalgia funny car, and AZN‘s red 1964 Chevy Nova race car from the Street Outlaw’s TV show. The Nova was built by the Church Boys Racing, in nearby Bristolville, OH. Cars, trucks and bikes attracted countless spectators as well as the owners.

Not only are you able to find sun, fun, pizza and cars all in one place, but 100% of the proceeds benefit the Travis Mills Foundation. The Foundation supports post-9/11 injured veterans and their families through long-term programs.

Chris Miller, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, who has been shot twice, stabbed and received other injuries, knows how hard it can be for people to want to move forward. Miller’s brother, Bobby, convinced his in-laws, Jack and Carol Mahan, co-owners of the Sunrise Inn, to donate 100 percent of the proceeds of the car show to the organization. Bobby Miller and Steve Dines got together to organize the event. Miller said during the first two years the car show donated its proceeds to the Travis Mills Foundation, it raised approximately $20,000. One local businessman matched the funds that were collected last year. An early count indicated this year’s proceeds would be in the $5,000 range.

On April 10, 2012, United States Army Staff Sergeant Travis Mills of the 82nd Airborne was critically injured on his third tour of duty in Afghanistan by an IED (improvised explosive device) while on patrol, losing portions of both legs and both arms. He is one of only five quadruple amputees from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to survive his injuries. In September 2013, Travis and his wife Kelsey founded the Travis Mills Foundation, a nonprofit organization, formed to benefit and assist post 9/11 veterans who have been injured in active duty or as a result of their service to our nation. or all those folks that might have found themselves driving down Route 35 in Holmdel, New Jersey on a recent Sunday afternoon would have found a retro drive in looking sign saying car show with a arrow pointing to the right. For all those that made the right turn at the sign found themselves behind the Dearborn Market and were treated to a great 1st Annual Car Show presented by the fine folks at the New Jersey Chapter of the Dragstrip Zombies Car Club. Worldwide there are many chapters of the Dragstrip Zombies so it comes as no surprise that all the members of the Dragstrip Zombies in New Jersey put their heads together and came up with a show of their own called the 1st Annual Rockabilly Getdown Car Show. The members picked the fields located behind the Dearborn Market located in Holmdel, New Jersey and the show filled up quick and fast with all sorts of cool cars. Fans were treated to great selection of all types of cars just waiting to be checked out and enjoyed. This show was open to all cars 1975 and older and this brought together the best of the best from all around New Jersey and New York area. Whether you wanted to see cool hot rods, classic customs, muscle cars, rat rods, antiques, they were all here at the show. Rows and rows of cars allowed fans to go on look back at history of hot rodding, muscle cars and the world of customs. John Cerchio brought out his outstanding

The famous Red Baron made famous back in the day by Chuck Miller and then into the model kits which all of us took time to build was on hand as well. John Sbrigato is the owner of this Red Baron which was built by Chuck Miller and featured at the Rockabilly Getdown. Along with all the great cars on display a great selection of vendors could be found with all types of great items which could be purchased as well. Throughout the day fans were treated to some great Rockabilly and Surf music which was played by DJ Lenny Lounge. “The Heavy Burners” a great band played three sets as well which kept everyone entertained as well. During the show members of the Dragstrip Zombies Car Club spent the day judging all the cars that entered the show. After much checking and rechecking trophies were given out to some special winners. However prior to these award being handed out some lucky folks were selected and given special door prizes which had been donated. Once all those prizes were given away it was time to hand out trophies. The 1939 Ford Coupe of Andy DiLio was selected as the winner in the Best Original class, while Blair Edmonds with his 1929 Essex was picked as being the Best Rat Rod. Bob Morris was the winner in the Best Antique class with his 1937 Cadillac Coupe, with the Best Truck award was given to Jim Kriel with his 1969 Suburban. Terry Wallach with his 1964 Chevy Nova SS was judged as the Best Muscle Car, with the 1966 VW Beetle of Scott Longfield getting the award for the Best Foreign. Best Paint award was given to Anthony Lopomo for his 1959 Cadillac Seville, Jorge Santos with his 1970 VW was picked for the Best Interior and the engine in the 1931 Ford owned by Vinny Santomarco was the winner for the Best Engine. Vito Panza brought out his 1941 Willys Coupe and took home to trophies in the Best Hot Rod class and then was picked by the Dragstrip Zombies Car Club as the Best of Show. People’s Choice picked by all those that attended the show went to Bob Krebs and his 1965 Ford Thunderbird. The fine folks at Antique Motoring Club of Monmouth County was presented with the Club Support award. While way back when James Duffy, Jr. who was the first one to register for the show was given a special award for being the first to sign up and support the show. With the huge success of the Dragstrip Zombies 1st Annual Rockabilly Getdown Car Show plans are already being worked on for the 2021 edition of the show. Dragstrip Zombies have already been invited back to hold their show at the very same location. Everyone at the Dearborn Market were so happy with the show that they have invited the Dragstrip Zombies to come back and have their show once again on the field behind their market located right in Holmdel, New Jersey. So if you are in the New Jersey/ New York area keep tuned into the Dragstrip Zombies and make plans to make it out to the next edition of the Annual Rockabilly Get Down Car Show you will have on super Zombie of a time. ~ John

If you remember: The Chi-Town Hustler, the Eastern Raider, the Damn Yankee, the Super Duster, Color Me Gone, Mr. Norm, Jungle Jim Liberman, the Warlord or the Flying Dutchman, then you were there watching a Funny Car Match Race somewhere East of the Mississippi. And... if you remember the Coca-Cola Cavalcade of Stars that made a stop at Dragway 42, Thompson & Pittsburgh, we’ve included a special Color chapter devoted to those burgeoning Funny Car Stars..f

Island Dragway Nostalgia Old Time Drag Racing Photos and words by John McCartney
F
ans of the sport of drag racing will always recall Island Dragway in Great Meadow, New Jersey as the place where the very first 200 mile per hour top fuel dragster was ever run. This pass was laid down by the one and only Big Daddy Don Garlits oh so many years ago. It was back then that folks would come out to their local drag strips and bring out their cars to have fun and make some runs. It was these days that drag racing was a much more fun sport where it was all about coming out to your local track and have fun and see what your car could run. At the same time all the local car clubs could come together to check out what everyone is building and how they are running. These times are now what many call nostalgia so it comes to no surprise that so many drag strips have found it is fun to have events many called Nostalgia Nationals. So with all the rich history at Island Dragway it was their turn to run their own Nostalgia Nationals. The Nostalgia Nationals held at Island Dragway is run just like those very early days of the sport of drag racing. For at the event there is a number of classes where folks come out to have a good time running their cars in hopes of taking home a trophy or two. It is all about having a great time at the same time spending time with their fellow racers and car lovers. Folks lined up bright and early on the little road going into Island Dragway for just that idea. Once the gates were opened folks came in and got to the process of going thru tech and then making their ways to the lanes to get some time trials in and get their cars dialed in and ready for first round. All sorts of cars were ready to take their turn on the famous Island Dragway drag strip. From front motored dragsters, vintage rear engine dragsters, gassers, muscle cars all of the cars from the pages of drag racing history. Getting back to the car club feel the folks at Northeast Timing Organization (NETO) came out in force with all of their cars to do battle to see who would take home the titles in two classes. In an event called the Tony Feil Memorial Race in honor of the late and long time NETO member Tony Feil cars of all sorts came

out to take part. With series sponsor JCM Racing and race sponsor Empirical Labs a great day of racing was in store for sure. In the NETO Comp class Mike Grafas took the win in his 1963 Corvette over Mike Petrole in his classic front motored dragster. Vinny Laurita picked up the best reaction time in the NETO Comp class with a really great .005 reaction. While over in the NETO Nostalgia class the big winner was Lou Tarascio driving his 1968 Camaro getting the victory over the 1963 Plymouth Fury driven by Tyler Segura. Winning the class was not quite enough for Lou Tarascio as he also took home the best reaction time award with a reaction time of .014. Over in the four classes presented by Island Dragway there were a number of winners. In the N-1 class Jeff Hall was the winner with his 57 Chevy over Alex Harasyma in his 69 Camaro. Over in the N-2 class Mike Barbone drove his 70 El Camino to the victory over John Lobsico in his 71 Chevy Nova. Michel Volpe took the win in the N-3 class with his 71 Malibu defeating the 80 Malibu of Reggie Whitson. The 65 Mustang of Bernie Spirock was the big winner in the N-4 class. In addition to all the great racing there was a huge car show for everyone to check out and enjoy. So many classic cars were on display in the form of hot rods, rat rods, customs, muscle cars, vintage race cars, so much cool stuff all trying to take home a very special trophy to cap off of a fun day at the drag strip.

The Island Dragway Nostalgia Nationals is one of those events which gives everyone both young and old a great way to take that step back in time. Back to the early days of drag racing, hot rodding and the car scene when everyone got the chance to come out to their local drag strip and have a fun relaxing day. ~ John

DOWNTOWN CHA
T
he Chardon Area Chamber of Commerce Downtown Cruise. This may have a long title, but it was also long on attendance and hot cars! The square in Chardon was alive with hot machines and people milling around checking out the cars and bikes on display! Action was always abundant and the whole event seemed well organiized! Overall, a great show with outstanding prizes, food and (of course) HOT RODS! This is another one of those shows that grows bigger every year. Weather, as usual, always plays a big deal on the attendance! Sunshine and light clouds mix to create the perfect situation for a great get together for the Chardon Area Chamber of Commerce. Each year is yet another year they’ve gotten it right. Over 200 to 300 cars cruise the square around downtown Chardon creating a magical atmosphere. Good job folks! Year after year, this late summer cruise on the square in picturesque Chardon, Ohio is a well attended event that stretches the parking abilities of the organizers. With a bunch of construction going on during a couple of years, those that got there early had their choice...but, parking everywhere was good nevertheless. I pulled in a little late on a couple of occasions, but still managed to find a spot. Most folks were still there through the end. This is a really nice “Square” cruise that always has a great turnout. I saw plenty of new cars every year I attended. Check it out when the “new normal” allows. Until then, go to Dustmanart. smugmug.com 2013 through 2019. Sadly, 2020 was cancelled due to COVID! Be smart, be aware, be safe!!!

be felt if your nail gets stuck in the paint. Sometimes, even if it is a scratch, performing what I am about to tell you, can lessen the way it looks and sometimes even help to hide it.
Now as an adult, he calls me to tell me that he did something really stupid and asks me how to fix it!
All you need to do is buy some scratch remover from the store. No need to spend more than $10-$15 on the high end. You can even use car wax if you already have some. The solvent in the product will break down the paint (Transfer) and will get rid of it. If you use a scratch remover, sometimes they have a little bit of grit to them, which helps as well. You can even mix a scratch remover and your wax together which does a good job too. The one main thing you will want to avoid is sticking your finger into your towel and using a bunch of pressure by pushing your finger into the paint. Doing this could actual cause little micro scratches or could mare the paint depending on how soft it is.
(So my Dad calls me)… “I have some white scratches on my bumper, how do I get rid of them?” The first thing I need to know is how did they get there? “I didn’t back my car up far enough in the garage and it closed on my bumper”. Has that ever happened to you or something close to it? Here is the deal. It doesn’t matter whether or not it was from the garage, a fence, a door from another vehicle, a bicycle or a number of other things. There are a couple kinds of “scratches” that you may be fortunate enough to get rid of in your driveway and not through a professional. Many times, if you hit something or something hits you, there is some sort of paint transfer (Or scuff) that occurs and this paint transfer can be taken off your paint using a couple of different things. First and foremost you can identify if it is a true scratch or a paint transfer by the way it feels on your fingernail. Is it over or under? Paint transfer can be felt over the paint and a scratch can

Cruisin’ in Westlake, July 4, 2020 Photos and words by Joe Secka
T
he Fourth of July has been a great day for car cruises in recent years. While all of the patriotic reasons area an incentive to schedule a show, the recent Covid-19 have been a constant deterrent and has caused numerous events to be cancelled or, at least, postponed. The city of Westlake decided to move forward with their 31st Annual Charity Classic Car Show at Clague Park. It was a hot and sunny day as vehicles arrived. There was judging and trophies for entries 1900-1980. Dash plaques were handed out to the first 150 arrivals. A huge grassy spaced the vehicles with plenty of room to roam around and view. Music, a Martial Arts Demonstration, picnic areas, family activities and games were also offered for those in attendance. The charities sharing proceeds included the St Baldrick’s Foundation for Pediatric Care and the Westlake Community Center. Keep this show in mind for your 2020 schedule of cruising! That’s all I have - Joe
