think most gearheads have, at one time or another, wished they could, once again, have the first car they ever owned. Well, Joe Baird made this wish come true. In 1986, a friend told him about an Oldsmobile convertible that was for sale. It needed a lot of work but the owner only wanted $200 to cover the cost of new tires and a battery he had recently purchased. Joe couldn’t get the money out fast enough. The body was solid but the motor was tired and there were a several oil leaks. On the plus side, the Olds had the turnpike cruiser package including a 400 CID-300 HP2BBL engine, Turbo 400 trans, dual exhaust and a 241 rear gear. Joe’s brother was currently working on a 1969 Olds 442. Joe picked up a 350 engine and added some spare parts from his brother. New seals were added to the Turbo 400 and Joe had reliable transportation. He was working at a Warren gas station at the time where he met Bruce Sweitzer. Bruce did body and paint work at the local Cadillac dealership. Joe asked him if he would help upgrade his “new” Olds. Bruce didn’t have extra space and Joe’s garage was small with a gravel floor. A neighbor came to the rescue and allowed Joe use his garage. Bruce would come over on the weekends to help and gave Joe instructions on what to work on during the week. When the project was ready for paint, Bruce applied a base coat-clear coat finish. This was about one year from Joe’s original purchase date and just in time for his high school graduation in 1987.

Joe sold the car to his brother in the early 90s on the condition he sell it back if he ever wanted to move on. During that time, his brother had re-installed the 400 motor, upgraded to front disc brakes and a 342 rear gear. In the meantime, Joe had picked up a 1963 Ford Fairlane which was one of his brother’s favorite body styles. Joe tossed in some cash and convinced his brother to make the deal. They came to an agreement and the Olds convertible had finally come full circle back to Joe. Joe said the Olds still has the same paint Bruce had laid down back in 1987. The engine has an Edelbrock 650 sitting on top of an Edelbrock Proformer manifold with a K&N air filter. A pair of Flowmasters handle the exhaust while American Racing TorqThrust wheels, 17x7 in front and 17x8 out back, assist in putting the metal to the road. It may have taken thirty plus years, but Joe could drive his “first love” down the road whenever he had the urge. Joe also picked up the “collector” bug and eventually purchased a 1955 Chevy Bel Air from home town friend, Russ Minick. Joe would stop over to visit him from time to time and admired a 1956 Chevy Bel Air convertible that Russ owned. Joe was determined to own this one someday and regularly asked Russ if he was ready to part with his wife’s favorite car. Obviously, Joe had the yearning for another “favorite” convertible. Well, the day eventually came and Russ said he would sell the ’56. Joe gave him three days to change his mind before selling the ’55 he currently owned. All of the pieces fell into place fairly quickly. Joe sold his ’55 and bought the ’56 convertible from Russ. Now Joe owns two of his favorite convertibles! Can life get any better than that? Well, maybe it can! Joe’s wife Chrissy, son Joey and daughter Hanna all have gearhead fever. Check out the photo of the Baird family collection! Joe has also amassed a fine collection of automobilia which is on display in the garage and inside of the home. Pretty damn Kool I’d say!

f you haven’t made it down to Ashland to help celebrate Kandi’s Birthday Bash, you are really missing out on something special. This was a car cruise-in with a pinup contest, burlesque exhibition, a shop open house with live music by the ‘80s rock band Bad JUJU. There were dash plaques, raffle items, a 50/50 and lots of festivities! Proceeds from this event went to the National Pancreas Foundation. The evening wound down with a Moonlight Cruise through downtown Ashland. The spacious grounds provided plenty of parking for the cruisers and spectators alike. It was a great mix of vehicles with some interesting displays. The pinup contest winner was crowned Miss Bombshell Blaze followed by a special performance by the Fort Wayne Bombshells Burlesque ladies.

Kandi has struggled with serious health issues as a high-risk autoimmune COPD but has fought back with a fierceness that has to be admired. She goes on to operate Kandi’s Rods & Kustoms with her husband, firefighter Rob McCrea. Their shop has become a place where other women are introduced into learning the automotive trades. At the dragstrip, Kandi can be seen racing her Chevy Nova down the track and generally promoting the hot rod hobby in any way she can. I was not able to make it down for the 2021 event, but I highly recommend this one for all of you gearheads out there. It is a blast for sure! This show is well worth considering for your 2022 plans. This event was originally scheduled for April, on Kandi’s birthday, but the Covid-19 issues moved it to September. Kandi is a born gear head, published pin up, car enthusiast, writer, and shop co/owner, manager, and, yes, a body tech to boot! From pin up dresses and petticoats when she co-hosts events as a special guests, to blue jeans and work shirts when in the shop or teaching at an event, Kandi and her team can build it if you can dream it. When Kandi was eight, her parents gave her a secondhand yellow banana seat bike. She bugged her dad to paint it hot pink with black pinstripes. He told her if he showed her how to sand and prep it for paint, and she did all the work, he would paint it her hot pink and put black pinstripes down it. That was just the beginning.

Mid Atlantic Nostalgia Nationals Photos & story by John McCartney

he annual gathering of all that is cool in the sport of drag racing and hot rodding know as the Mid Atlantic Nostalgia Nationals got back on track in 2021 after having to take off a year in 2020 due to Covid. For each of the past 12 years John Pressley has brought his unique one day event to the historic Cecil County Dragway in Rising Sun, Maryland. What many feel is the largest one day single gathering of nostalgia drag racing and huge car show drew a great number of cars and fans to take all the action in. Pressley who basically puts the show on his own doing all the work makes sure to give backs he donates some of the profits back to the American Cancer Society. Just like back in the day fans were treated to a great selection of funny cars, which kept fans entertained with long smokey burnouts, back up girls, and even wilder side by side runs much like they did back in the heydays of funny car match racing. All the fuel coupes were in hand in the form of the Frantic Ford, Funny Farmer, Time Bomb, Generation X, Temporary Insanity and Excalibur just to name a few. There were two great rounds of racing action for the floppers along with other great vintage drag racing machines. Along with all these great machines there were many classes on hand to run their yearly point series. The East Coast Gassers brought out a great selection of cars to do battle. When the smoke cleared the big winner was Robert Carson taking the victory over Scott Hasko. The Back seat drivers came to town with cool selection of front motored dragsters and at day’s end it was a family affair as the Hand family squared off to see who would take the win on this day it was dad getting the win as Stephen Hand Sr. got the victory over son Tom Hand. The fine folks at NETO (North East Timing Organization) came to the event with help of their friends at New England

Performance and Muscle of Norwalk, Conn. Brian English took the win in the Comp class with his 69 Chevy Camaro over Jerry Deslandes in his 1970 Plymouth Duster. While over in the Nostalgia class Ged Diemer got the victory with his 1972 Ford Maverick over Bill Krause in his 1967 Chevy II. While another cool collection of cars showed up from the fine folks at Mandra with the win in this organization yearly points chase came down to Marc English taking home all the prizes as he defeated Bud Poust. United Nostalgia Stock/Super Stock brought a huge field with six rounds needed to determine a winner and on this day it was Stan Giermanski. Germanski got the victory over Frank Cimba which featured both racers behind the wheel of two 1970s Nova. In addition to all of the great racing on the track folks could check out a great car show which is held at the event as well. All sorts of hot rods, muscle cars, customs, vintage race cars all come out to take part in the event as well. At the end of the car show cool trophies are given away to the best of the best. Along with the car show there is a great swap meet which had all sorts of vendors selling all types of cool automotive items. With the 12th edition of the Mid Atlantic Nostalgia Nationals in the book you can be sure John Pressley is hard at work making plans for 2022 running of this event which is going to be the 13th running of the event at Cecil County Dragway in Rising Sun, Maryland. This one will no doubt be lucky 13 and make sure you are among all the lucky fans and racers that come out each and every year for this one great day of fun and racing you will not be sorry. ~ John

Richard’s 1967 Plymouth Belvedere “1” Hemi “Lightweight” Vermilion, Ohio. This is my 1967 Plymouth Belvedere 1 Hemi “Lightweight” 4 speed car restored back to original. The car was built special by Chrysler for Judy Lilly “Miss Mighty Mopar”. She is one of the most windiest female drag racers of all time. It was built in the St. Louis Plant. The motor was rebuilt by Dick Landy. The car ran in Super Stock B (SS/B), times in the 10’s. Judy won Super Stock Eliminator quite often and piloted the car to her first four Super Stock Elmination titles at NHRA Mile High Nats in 1967.
