Randomly Speaking The Chinese Plan

E

very Year in January, as the show listings begin coming in, we always begin the process of truing to figure out which ones we’re going to “Just for the fun of it”. Another words, not the ones we’re covering as a magazine, just some fun stuff. Actually, we occasionally wind up doing a story on them anyway, its our way of fooling the brain into thinking it’s getting a vacation from all the late night writing and editing sessions. I’ve found more people and more cruisers tend to plan their summer early as well. Mainly to find vacation time they’d like to take off and also to book hotel rooms before they’re all cobbled up. But how do you pick a show? There’s so many?! Here’s the formula that I use. Its called the Chinese Food Take Out Method. Something from Column A, Column B and so on. In the Column A category, we’ll call that the national and regional events. These you chose not only on interested level consider your long distance comfort level, which is something I’d like to touch on. They say once a person “Stretches” their comfort level in anything whether it’s sports, business, home life, etc, like a rubber band, it rarely goes back to it’s original size. Once you’ve found your new boundary you tend to use that as a new bench mark to which you judge the next goal. If you’ve gone (successfully) to an event that was over one hour away, you’re ready to tackle the 2 & 3 hour stints, which in turn “tune you up” for the 4-5 hour runs. After a while you don’t even consider time/mileage, only where you’re going to stay and what you’re going to visit along the way. The Column B area would be visiting different weekly CruiseIns. Everybody has their couple of favorites. They’re kinda like an old shoe, you can go night after night and feel comfortable. All your friends will welcome you. But this year, try to visit one different cruise per month. I think you’ll find that some of your friends are trying the same thing too. If you live on the far west side, make it a point to visit a cruise on the east and vice versa. Consider going to a cruise you’ve heard about, but normally didn’t consider because it was “just too far”. I guess it is “too far” if you’re going by yourself, but it’s really not if you line up a few cars and make it a “buddy trip”. I promise you, even if the cruise is a bust, you’ll have the time of your life when you go with friends, and while back at the ‘old cruise, everybody else will wish they would have gone with you!

6 Cruisin’ Times ~ January 2020

Column C would be the downtown events that seem to combine plain ‘ol cruisin’ with the regional rod run style atmosphere. These have become some of my personal favorites of the summer. Since they’re all day/night affairs, you could plan a half way stop for food at a cool eatery. This helps break up the otherwise “2 hour/too far” syndrome into a couple of quick 45 minute jaunts, make the boring part of the interstate travel go by almost unnoticed. If you’re really industrious, you can map your way along the back roads, which will keep the speeds down a bit for you 4:11 gear guys and enable you to see “the good ‘ol USA’ the way it was intended. Column D is of course supporting the local shows. They really need your support and with careful consideration, you can book your summer around those and still visit shows far away. Column E is the “out of the ordinary” shows. Every year try and take a look at something different. Out of the ordinary isn’t limited to race tracks or automotive events. Here’s a fun idea: Fill up a random restaurant parking lot with 10+ hot rods and own the place. For example get a group together (maybe 4/5 cars) and cruise for no reason to someplace that’s....”out of the ordinary”. and you’ll get the biggest kick. Then there’s Column F for “Friggin” crazy. For only those who want to really want to “turn the wick up full strength”. Its called doin a double or triple. Hitting two cruises in one night or 3 shows on a Sunday afternoon. Or do 2 shows and then wind up at a Sunday night cruise. It’s reminiscent of the neighborhood “progressive dinners”, ya know drinks at one persons’ house, then dinner at another and dessert at the third. All it takes is a little planning and a bunch of friends (make that crazy friends). Start your summer the Chinese way and remember as they used to say - “With six you get egg roll!”. ...course that’s just me randomly speaking.

ust like many other gearheads, Mickey was searching for that just “right” car and the internet provided the opportunity. This ’56 Bel Air was located in Lake Havasu, Arizona and was already a completed build in excellent

condition. However, excellent condition and “just perfect” is, quite often, not the same thing. The moment his purchase was unloaded from the hauler that brought it from Arizona to Ohio was one of Mickey’s most memorable experiences. However, the interior needed re-done and the motor had to be looked over. Then there was some consideration if the paint was exactly what Mickey preferred.

Jack Harlan, of Harlan’s Auto Care Ltd. in Canfield, took on the task of the mechanical upgrades. A blueprinted 383 small block that pumps out 440 horsepower was dropped in under the hood. The power plant sports aluminum heads, Performer January 2020 ~ Cruisin’ Times 13

RPM intake, MSD Ignition, 750 cfm Holley carb and a custom grind hydraulic cam. The end result is 453 ft. lbs. of torque at 3800 RPMs exiting through a Thorly-Flowmaster exhaust. A wealth of chrome and aluminum dresses the engine compartment up to show quality. Power is directed outback through a 700R4 transmission with help from a B&M Holeshot converter and cooler connecting to the 3.08:1 Positraction 10-bolt differential.

‘Just Perfect’ Bel Air Mickey Nuzzo’s ‘56 Chevy Bel Air

A Lokar shifter gets the work done from the driver’s seat. Goodyear Eagles, 215/50R 17s in front and 225/50R 18s in back, are wrapped around 17x7 (front) and 18x8 (rear) American Racing Torque Thrust II black chrome mags for the pavement connection. A chrome column connects to a power steering unit to keep it straight and a Delco Morraine based power four wheel disc brake system delivers the stopping power.

The Bel Air can be seen at many local cruises throughout the car show season and that is the way it ought to be! Mickey says he would do exactly the same thing if he had it all to do over again. That certainly sounds as though he got it “just perfect!” That’s all I’ve got - Joe

44th Annual Motorama

Shines Bright in North Haledon Photos and story by John McCartney

O

n a picture perfect day over Memorial Day the 44th Annual Motorama packed the High Mountain School complex. No matter what type of car you wanted to check out you could find it here on display. All cars and trucks 1994 and older were welcome to take part at the event. The featured cars for this year’s event were the El Caminos which along with pick up trucks 94 and older had their own special parking area at this year’s event. Whether you were into the classic muscle cars, hot rods, customs, or those special one of kind cars you could check it out here. There were awesome antique cars as well. Rows and rows of really great cars and trucks that filled every square inch of the rolling fields of the High Mountain School complex located in North Haledon, New Jersey. In addition to all the great cars on display there was a giant automotive style flea market where folks could look to pick up that special part or piece that one needs to finish that project. For all the kids that came out with their parents there was some special items to get the youngsters even more interested in the car culture scene. Over at the trophy table the little kids could stop by and pick up some cool Chevy cookies and a great automotive style coloring book and crayons to fuel their future interest in cars. Throughout the day door prizes of all sorts were given away to all that had a car in the car show. Trophies were given out at the end of the show to those special cars that stood out above all the others. This show benefits both the Make-A-Wish Foundation of New Jersey and the Wounded Warriors Project very fitting on the Memorial Day weekend. ~ John

Classic Auto Mall Glory Days Photos & words by John McCartney

The Classic Auto Mall Glory Days

A Step Back in Time at Maple Grove

Photos and story by John McCartney

The Classic Auto Mall Glory Days held at Maple Grove Raceway in Reading, Pa. allows all that attend to go back in time. Back to a time when drag racing and hot rodding ruled the world. It was then when everyone had a cool race car or wild a hot rod that they could take down to the local drag strip and have some fun racing or just checking out all the great cars on and off the strip. Maple Grove Raceway over its long and storied history has seen many great events. So it is no doubt that The Classic Auto Mall Glory Days is an event that draws a great deal of cool cars over the run of the two days that they event is run. This year found the event run as two complete days with Saturday being for the featured match race cars and car show. Sunday was for the car clubs to come out and have fun and see who would take home the big prize. Let’s get underway with all the action on Saturday. A great group of crazy wild gassers from the ScottRods AAGassers making the trip to Maple Grove Raceway for the first time in the clubs history. Round one featured a wild burnout contest with all the cars smoking the tires as long and as far as they could. When all the smoke had cleared the judges had a very hard choice but the winner was Ray Kasicki in the 33 Willys called the Violator. The big winner on the day was the great bunch of folks from Team Crazy Grandpa Racing as they got the overall win in their wild Chevy Corvette. Bob Toth took home the win in the funny car part of the day driving the Rocky Roxlau owned Time Bomb Vega, this car has become the car to beat along the East Coast as of late. The East Coast Fuelers came out with a great selection of front motored dragsters and the big winner on the day was Ed Bliss in the River Rat Racing Blown Big Block Chevy running a fine 7.01 at 199 in the final round.

30 Cruisin’ Times ~ January 2020

Updated daily at www.cruisintimesmagazine.com

Saturday featured a giant car show as well. The fields were filled with all sorts of cool cars spanning all the eras and styles. From hot rods, customs, muscle cars, vintage race cars you name it was all here for everyone to enjoy. With the top best of the best cars being asked to come back to attend the Mopar Express Lane NHRA National presented by Pennzoil during the month of September a very cool deal for those lucky cars that were picked out of the giant turnout. Sunday this year was for all the car clubs to come out and do battle and have fun on the Maple Grove drag strip. The East Coast Gassers brought their usually great selection of cars to do battle to keep on earning points towards the overall championship. When all the dust settled it was Bob Lavoie taking the win over Denny Stewart in the final. Up next the Backseat Drivers came to Maple Grove with all sorts of cool dragsters. Kenny Capraun driving his Rat out of Hell dragster took the win running a 7.27 at 187 in the final defeating Stephen Hand to record the win. Mandra rounded out the Sunday part of the racing action with another big field of cool nostalgia cars and in the final Mark Santee got the victory over a red lighting Josh Nevells for the victory. The Classic Auto Mall Glory Days at Maple Grove is a great weekend for everyone to come together and have fun. Whether it be racing, showing a car, talking about racing or just enjoying the rich history of Maple Grove Raceway and the sport of drag racing. ~ John

Jungle Jim

Funny Car Match Racing - East, by John Shapiro A unique look at the fuel funny cars that roamed the Eastern, Midwest and Southern tracks during the late 60’s and 70’s. These “self sponsored” asphalt gypsies did it for love, going from track to track - three and maybe four times a week.

If you remember: The Chi-Town Hustler, the Eastern Raider, the Damn Yankee, the Super Duster, Color Me Gone, Mr. Norm, Jungle Jim Liberman, the Warlord or the Flying Dutchman, then you were there watching a Funny Car Match Race somewhere East of the Mississippi. And... if you remember the Coca-Cola Cavalcade of Stars that made a stop at Dragway 42, Thompson & Pittsburgh, we’ve included a special Color chapter devoted to those burgeoning Funny Car Stars..f

Heredia Bro’s Backyard Build 1970 Chevrolet C 20 Pick up Bakersfield, CA. This project was done solely by six brothers of one family. Working mainly only on Saturdays for two years. Our ages range between 51 and 68. We all grew up and had our own separate careers. But we all shared common loves. (Cars and Trucks) This is the first time as a team that we all joined forces to restore a vehicle. We never realized the talent we as a family possessed. This project has been so enjoyable for me personally. Working and seeing my brothers on a regular basis. Two of the brothers basically did all of the mechanical/electrical/assembly of the truck. While other brothers provided the Engineering, Welding, Metalworking, Fiberglass, Fabrication, Paint and Auto body expertise. Not one brother does it all. Each has a different niche in the process. This project could not have been done without the help of each other. My brother Steve is the brainchild of the tailgate with Chevrolet lit up when hitting the brake light. He had been thinking about this for many years. Always wondering to himself if he can do a restoration project that one day he could do this. Even though we had many struggles and speed bumps along the way. We did it. And we are all very proud of what we accomplished!

Detailing

The Difference between “Cleaning” & “Detailing” The main difference between “cleaning” and “detailing” is how you go about the job as a whole. When one details, they spend time taking care of the places that most often get overlooked when doing a general cleaning. For instance, when cleaning the windows, detailing means rolling them down a couple inches to get the part that rolls up into the frame of the door (If your vehicle has that) so when you roll them down, that one part isn’t dirty. Detailing means pulling the gear shifter back or side to side and getting rid of the crumbs that get stuck in the cracks. Detailing means removing things like skin grease from behind a leather steering wheel as well as hard to reach places in general. By doing a thorough DETAILING job a couple times a year, you can spend more time doing basic cleaning. Here is a list of some of the hard to reach as well as often overlooked places that may need to be detailed, while you are doing a general cleaning. Door jambs: To detail them, means to degrease and then to wax them. By doing this, every time you or someone else opens up your door the vehicle looks cleaner. Glass: To detail your glass means to roll the windows down to clean the top part that get’s rolled up into the frame. By doing this, you won’t have a bunch of dirt at the top making your clean vehicle look dirty. Follow the seat belt: Depending on your vehicle will

E PROTECT-A-SLEEV depend on where your seat belts are located. Whether they come out from the seat or from somewhere else, rest assured there is dirt in those areas. And if the dirt is on one side, understand that it’s probably on the other side, so make sure check as well. Gear Shifter: Whether you have an automatic or a stick shift, make sure to pull the shifter back or from side to side to remove crumbs and other debris that can get stuck in there. Air Vents: Air vents collect a lot of dust and it shows especially if you haven’t cleaned them in a while. A cloth is good but there is nothing like having a good detail brush to really get into the places you cannot reach. Some mild degreaser, a brush and a cloth is what you’ll need. Proper Tools: Microfiber cloths and an assortment of good detailing brushes is key. Horse hair nylon, double sided detailing and vent and dash brushes are important to have for the most successful detailing job. Everything else is up to you. Spend a little more time “detailing” and you’ll be able to spend less time “cleaning!
