Cruisin’ On The Circle Tallmadge Tuesday Nights Photos and story by Joe Secka Three roads dissect Tallmadge Circle thus creating six separate directions to arrive from for the Akron Chargers Tuesday Night Cruises. Firehouse Grille & Pub along with Danny Boy’s Pizza provide support and the parking space for this event. I headed west to check this on out on August 11, a Tuesday evening, of course. This was my first time to visit the Charger’s cruise and I was extremely pleased with my experience. The turnout was great! The weather was fully cooperating and everyone seemed to be enjoying the evening. One end of the lot had a tree line where many cruisers had placed their lawn chairs to take advantage of what shade was available. Food was available from both the Firehouse and Danny Boy’s with a large outdoor patio area. I ordered a Reuben from the Firehouse menu and was quite pleased with the offering. Hmmm, guess I was kind of stuffed too as a credit to the portion size! LOL! The hosting club, The Akron Chargers, actually return 100% of the 50/50 monies. The “winning” ticket gets half of what was collected and the rest is divided up into several envelopes which are then handed over to the holders of the next tickets pulled. This is certainly an interesting approach to making this show one that cruisers will want to return to. Muscle cars, hot rods, resto rods, modern muscle, rat rods, gassers and even a couple of gorgeous antiques/classics were on hand for everyone to check out. Early signs are indicating there will be a slow return to “our normal” in 2021. However, I doubt shows will be totally shut down as we saw last year. So, we will have to take advantage of every opportunity that is sent our way. This show is well worth considering for your upcoming plans. That’s all I have - Joe

D
EI (Design Engineering Inc.) had to endure a cancellation from their originally planned date due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This was my first trip to the event hosted with the City of Avon Lake. The weather was perfect for the 5th Annual Cruise-In. It cooled down a bit from earlier in the day which worked to the benefit of the cruisers in attendance. Space was abundant with Weiss Fields (baseball) being used for the show. An overflow area was also put to use as the hot rods continued to pull in. Concession stands were open to provide food and beverages to those who were hungry or thirsty. The Avon Lake Police Department helped to keep everything running smoothly the entire day. And Sergeant Les Carrender kept the tunes going all day. The Valor Home of Lorain County is a transitional housing program for homeless male veterans and they were the beneficiary of this event. Valor helps their residents through structured and engaging therapies such as art, music and life skills therapy on-site four days a week. The support workers offer advocacy and encouragement to 100,000 people each year. Design Engineering, Inc.™ is the foremost supplier of thermal tuning products featuring products for all power sports including street, off road, snowmobile and watercraft. This fun-filled early evening event featured a large array of custom cars, trucks and motorcycles along with a mix of hot rods and race cars. “What began a few years’ back as a cruise-in on the grounds of our headquarters has grown exponentially,” said organizer Steve Garrett. “We started this event to showcase our work in the automotive aftermarket while giving back to the community with a local fundraiser. “Once our local community leaders became involved and suggested the larger more expansive Weiss Baseball Fields, we knew that this event would take off. We really enjoy how everyone lines up for the Cruise In and there is something exciting and new each year. We are so glad to be a part of this community-wide effort to support Valor Home of Lorain County and the incredible work they do.” I’d have to give this event a high five for location, participation and organization. Cruisin For A Cause at the Maple Valley Diner Photos and story by John McCartney
D
uring the run of the car show season the Maple Valley Diner located in Clifton, New Jersey plays host to a number of weekly cruise nights. From their very popular Wednesday and Saturday night cruises which are always packed with all sorts of great cars. However as the cruise and car show came to an end in 2020, the Maple Valley Diner holds a pair of car shows on Sundays which both help to raise money for great causes. Those two causes being Breast Cancer Awareness and then the Boys and Girls Club of Clifton. Nick and Nite is in charge of playing all the great tunes and works very hard to put these two shows on along with help of car show promoter Drea. These two hard working folks get more special help from Lee and Dan (better know as Dan-O) who both lend a hand with whatever is needed. Maple Valley Diner is the perfect backdrop for these shows with giant parking lots which face out onto the highway of Route 46. It is not long until all of the parking lots are filled to the limit very fast. With everyone adhering to all the Covid-19 guidelines which include social distance and wearing masks all to stay in line. The Maple Valley Diner is also doing their part by allowing anyone to enjoy meals outside in special set up tables which allowed folks to get some of the great Maple Valley Diner food. All sorts of cool cars can be found on display from classics, customs, muscle cars, hot rods, to modern muscle, it is all there for folks to check out and enjoy. Throughout the run of the show Nick and Nite gives out all sorts of cool door prizes and then at the end of the day trophies are handed out in various classes. These trophies no doubt make all those who are selected just that much special and for sure treasure the special award while helping out some great causes. For at the end of the day it is the fine folks at Breast Cancer Awareness and Boys and Girls Club of Clifton who come out the big winners. As all of the money at these two shows are then turned around and donated to these great charities. It is thru all the hard work put forth by Nick and Nite, Drea, Lee and Dan (Dan-O) and the folks at the Maple Valley Diner which makes each of these special shows even that more successful. ~John

The Tale of Two Towels
A
s many of you know, I am a huge fan of microfiber towels. They are extremely versatile and when used the right way, you only need a couple, especially when you’re in a pinch, like I found myself in a couple weeks ago. I have a high top cargo van that does not fit into most Do-It-Yourself car wash bays and I have a select one that I go to when necessary. When I got to it this time, it was under construction so I found myself having to go elsewhere, only to be able to use the vacuums because I couldn’t fit in the wash bay. I had planned on high pressure washing out the interior floor and back of the van and now I was stuck using just 2 towels doing it another way which is what I do when I have no choice and the results were amazing. My first step is always vacuuming out the interior making sure to get into all the little nooks and crannies. Now the fact is, I really only needed 2 towels because I can start at the top and finish on the floors. I go from the cleanest surfaces to the dirtiest. With the fresh towels, I start with the windows, then I work my way down the dashboard, doors and other areas that are in this case vinyl. At this point, my towels are beginning to soil up and with a
quick wring out, they are ready for the next and biggest task, cleaning the rubber on the floors. Because microfiber cleans so well, all I had to do was spray cleaner on the floors, use a little water to spread it around and then using one cloth to “scrub” and another to “dry”, I was able to do a perfect job, without making a mess. And one of the best things about microfiber cloths is that they hold a large amount of water, making it super simple to pick up large amounts of water. Now that I have used my two towels from the cleanest to the dirtiest parts of the vehicle, I can now finish off with wiping out the door jambs, not worrying about spreading grease and grime back into the vehicle and viola, it’s back to looking fresh and well maintained. In just 20 minutes I was out of there, feeling great about accomplishing the job. ~ David

‘Yay! We (You) Did It!!!’ Oh, so good to be able to hold our Choppers Rod and Custom show again. Not having last years threw all of our body clocks (and spirits) into a funk. I want to thank everyone that was a part of this years show. And a special thank you to the Sportsplex family for agreeing that we should ‘wing it’ and hope for the best. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. I know I did. I was on a bit of ‘restricted activity’ this year, but it worked in my favor. I got to spend time with people, talk ‘schmidt’, and have fun. Spending time with the kids while they colored and built snap-tite models was fun, too. We set the ‘pedal car’ area up as a Drive-In and I had my collection of Frankie and Annette beach movies playing…and, a dvd of an old Ghoulardi episode with ‘The Brain That Wouldn’t Die’ (that one was for me). We had more door prizes than ever! Thank you sponsors and vendors for those donations. We also handed out more awards than we ever have. One new one is the visiting club pick. This is to recognize the clubs that support our show evrey year. We labeled poker chips with each club’s name on it, throw them in a fishbowl and pull one out. That club gets to make their pick, something that best represents their clubs’ tastes. Once selected, we toss that chip (no repeats) Our first club to pick, for this year, was The Stylers. Judie’s 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Strongsville, OH. This is my 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme I found her while visiting my daughter and her family in South Carolina. Her previous owner had her for 34 years and kept a journal of all work that was done to make her the beauty she is today. She was going to be sold at my son-in-law’s used car lot but I have always loved the Oldsmobile body shape and was determined to buy her and bring her home, and I did! It was love at first sight.
Steven & Michelle’s 1977 Corvette North Olmsted, OH. In January of 2018, I was browsing Facebook marketplace for a project car for a Father / Son build. I came across this 1977 Corvette from a seller in Bedford. We brought it back to life over 2 years for a fun street machine that we absolutely love! Our engine is a 355 CID, 4-bolt main- SBC with a TH350 transmission, Summit racing heads, Holley Quick Fuel carb…..the list goes on. We installed new suspension and driveline components to make for a smoother ride while we are out cruising C-Town! Joe’s 1969 Chevelle SS Grafton, OH. I am a true 69 SS with a production date of 4/8/1969 and delivered to Sharpnack Chevrolet in Vermillion, OH. My current owner purchased me in September 1975 for $600 and I was titled in his mother’s name since he just turned 16 years old. Unfortunately, my big block was gone and I now had a 327 in its place. He drove me during his high school days and shortly afterwards “boom” went the 327. A guy in the neighborhood had just wreaked his 69 Camaro SS, so for $350 I now had a big block. Then it happened. My owner went off to college, started a career, built a house, got married, got divorced, got married again, you get the picture. He had many offers to sell me but every time he said no. After 35 long years of sitting in his parents garage it was finally my turn. With two fantastic neighbors (Bob and Dennis) leading the way my restoration began. After three years I was done and officially back on the road in October of 2017. His 95-year-old mother could not believe it. I hope you liked my story.

See picture for the story on this one of a kind car. $58,500. 216 272-6750 0721082160 In 1964 this car was bought new from EARL DAVIS CHEVROLET in Mansfield Ohio. In 1964 the original owner traded the car at Kerr Motors in Shelby Ohio. KERR MOTORS was a Chrysler Dealer. An employee of Kerr Motors then told his brother about this car that was just traded in and thought he should come see it. It didn’t take Don Harvey long to realize he needed this car. Not long after seeing this car, Don Harvey of Mansfield Ohio was the proud owner of this 1964 Impala SS 409. According to Don and his son Jeff, this is a 2-4 car. This car has been garage kept from 1964 to present. It was last driven in 1972 to a relative’s funeral and was last licensed in 1976. It has been started and waxed periodically throughout the years. This 1964 Impala SS 409 was undercoated by the original dealer. The motor was replaced by Chevrolet under warranty in 1965 when the car had approximately 11,000 miles. It does have the original paint and interior. The car also has the original shocks. The plastic from the factory is still under the sill plates. The car has 22,597 original miles. The battery has been replaced throughout the years. A new exhaust was installed by Jerry Reedy of Mansfield Ohio.
