Randomly Speaking Cruisin’ down south..
I
always loved doing the long haul trip down south driving through Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia and Fla. It’s not that I don’t like the constant turning through the West Virginia mountains, there’s no “cool” places to visit. I grew up with a family that loved to shop at the old souvenir places and road side attractions, so I heard there was plenty to see along I-71 and I-75. Of course, nowadays since the advent of the interstate, there’s a McDonalds at every exit and once you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all! Same is true of the hotels and box restaurants, so I decided to make it a point to visit our patronize some of the different places along the way. After a few hours I started noticing some major differences. Here’s a few. Did you know Vidalia Onions are grown only in Visalia, Georgia? Trucks leave there on a regular basis selling onions all over the U.S. The only thing we grow in massive numbers that’s indigenous to Ohio are orange construction barrels. Down there they greet you at the gas station with “How y’all doin’.. ya want a goo-goo cluster, they’re on sale!” Up here they say, “If your not getting gas don’t park next to the pump!”. Up here we have “Phil dirt & the dozers” who are one of the best oldies bands anywhere. Down there they have “Uncle Bud & the Dixie Darlin’s” who will entertain you with humor, charm and some country fried chicken. The chicken was good, but they might want to rehearse a little more on the music end of things. Speaking of fried chicken. I stopped by the official Colonel Sanders Kentucky Fried Chicken museum in Corbin, KY. Up here we call it KFC because it’s not nice to say the word “Fried”. Their philosophy down there is, “Er body knows it’s fried, ya can’t have fried chicken without frying’, so why hide it?” Good point.

Down there they have the Don Garlits Drag Racing Museum. It’s an incredible collection of drag racing’s finest along with a real souvenir shop. Up here we have Frank Farroni’s (private) museum in which the Farroni Brothers are one of the few people to say they beat Big Daddy at Thompson, but they don’t have a souvenir shop. I think we’d all like to have a “I visited Farroni’s Car Collection” shirt. They have the “Crime & Punishment Museum and Last Meal Cafe” in Ashburn, Ga. I got off the exit and followed the signs, pulled into the parking space and then I got a strange notion that this might be one of those police stings for un-paid speeding ticket offenders so I slowly backed out and drove off. Up here we don’t have anything like that, unless of course you go through Linnedale’s I-480 speed trap. The biggest delight of the entire trip was our visit to the “As Seen On TV” store in Tennessee. You’ve seen the commercials for all sorts of amazing stuff that promises amazing results, only to get it in the mail and it rarely works. The building is home of the famous “Laser Straight” that projects a perfect straight line on a wall, (unless the battery goes weak, then it projects a waiving line), the “Gutter Flusher” that sprays leaves away (leaves that are found on a 1 foot tall tree) and the highly acclaimed “Clapper” - clap on, clap off. Actually I will say, I really liked the “T-shirt folding boards” I picked one up and we use it still at Cruisin Times to prep new shirts. I think I’d like to start one of those “As Seen on TV” store and museum” right here in the “North”, ‘cause lord knows I’ve bought most of their stuff and could be the curator, hands down! ...course that’s just me randomly speaking.

T
he Blue Suede Cruise has become a staple of the summer cruising season in the Midwest and continually draws huge crowds each year. There certainly was “something for everyone” to enjoy during the three day weekend. About 2000 vehicles will congregate for an entire weekend. This is an opportunity for the owners to “show and tell” about their special rides. Many car owners will decorate their spaces with all the necessary accessories of the era and a few even dress in period correct outfits just to get into the “spirit” of the weekend. Enthusiasts can stroll through the acres of show fields, to reminisce with the participants and, perhaps, even bring home their ‘dream car’ from those being offered For Sale.

Lingenfelter Performance Engineering was the title sponsor and their display of products and specialty vehicles is always worth the time to check out. Across the way, the Vanessa’s Women’s World tent housed a variety of vendors, ranging from jewelry and cosmetics to home décor. There was a Manufacturer’s Midway and also the Cruisers Social Hall, a place to hang out to talk about the ‘good ole days’, to bench race or to simply get out of the sun. Swap meet vendors were setup behind the Summit Side Grandstands with a nice variety of nostalgia related pieces, parts and vehicles.

Door Prizes were handed out during the weekend and Saturday’s activities included the Smokey Burnout Contest, and an evening “oldies” concert under the stars. The grand finale, for the day, was the Signature Bader Fireworks! The Bader fireworks show is some of the finest pyro you will see in the country, and it was choreographed to music! Memories from the early days of drag racing were provided by The Nostalgia Drag Racing League (NDRL) with their championship series of racers. Gasser Magazine also returned to present three race classes for the gassers, Nostalgia Gas, Competition Gas and Gasser Madness. The registered participants, from the cruising side, had plenty of opportunities to race their ‘hot rods’ down the quarter mile, to see if they were just as fast as they remembered. Fun runs took place before and after the nostalgia drag racing all three days. Sadly, the Covid-19 pandemic has canceled the 2020 edition of the Blue Suede Cruise. However, time flies by quickly and plans for the 2021 event needs to be written into your upcoming schedule. … See ya there! That’s all I have - Joe

1970 OLDSMOBILE PACE CAR Words by Jack Springer
M
y mother (god rest her soul) had always taught me to be a coupon saver and since my wife and I of 30 years have always been race fans (NASCAR mostly) it was a no-brainer for me to enter into contest I could. Twenty years ago Coors was giving away a car for its 30th Anniversary at the INDY 500 in late May. Having gone to my Giant Eagle Grocery store in Strongsville, Ohio in March I noticed the contest and Entry Forms. As per usual, I went home and entered. Eventually I got a letter back from Coors saying I was a finalist and to fill some more info out. After the race in May (The Pace Car driven by Roger Ward and race won by Al Unser Sr), they gave the pace car away via the drawing. A gentleman from Beverage Distributing tried to get a hold of me over that weekend but I was not home. My oldest son tried to contact me because I “WON A PRIZE” of which I Paid No Attention - we thought it was a hat or something! Dreams do come true. On Monday morning - we were back home and he woke me up at 8 in the morning and said “You have no idea what you have won, right?” I said no, and he told me “YOU WON A CAR!”. We proceeded to set up a time and location where he could present it to me, and since the ballot had come from the Giant Eagle Grocery Store at the South Park Mall in Strongsville

- that was the spot. With a small ceremony in the front of the store in June of 2000 he presented me with the car – A mint 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Indianapolis 500 Pace Car driving up to the front of the store. Complete with original Coors shirt and magnetic Coors decals. I have had the car now 20 years. The original odometer reading from which Coors bought the car, was 7931 miles. She has now about 15,000 miles on her – This car is 95% original - no frame off restoration needed. It’s stored in a climate controlled garage in a car bag with a battery tender, moisture absorbing packs, and she still starts right up. Convertible top works, functioning factory 8 track player (there is an 8 track holder full of Hank Williams in the trunk (LOL). I have maintained regular oil changes, etc over the years and she has been lovingly cared for, and of course has never seen snow! The Pace Car was originally owned by Mrs J MortonSwango Board of Directors Oldsmobile. It is 1 of 358 Pace Car Replica VIN# - 342670M294491- 350 CI. Produced in Lansing Michigan March 1970. We have all the documentation on the car from the Oldsmobile Museum of Jackson, MI. Pam Clark (from the Oldsmobile History Center) helped me put this all together by doing an etching on the FIREWALL (with paper and pencil) to determine that this was an official 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Pace Car produced with the Y74 Option-Indy. D
ead Man’s Curve Car Club dealt themselves a winning hand when they put on their very first indoor car show inside the Showboat Casino and Convention Center in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Atlantic City is rich in history from hosting the Miss America Pageant for many years to its historic boardwalk and for many years the gambling center of New Jersey with all its casino’s. The Showboat Casino is one of those who has turned to show to fill its casino floor. So it only made sense that the hard working folks at the Dead Man’s Curve Car Club brought their unique form of hot rodding car show to fill the casino floor. For three days all sorts of cool customs, hot rods, muscle cars, vintage race cars, tv and movie cars were all on display for all to enjoy. There were high quality cars many of which have featured in national magazines all with deep history. TV and movie cars which spanned many decades brought folks back to a certain place and time. From the Munsters came both the Munster Coach and the Dragula, the Bat-mobile, Starsky and Hutch were just a few of the many cars on display. From the big screen folks could see cars

from Grease, Ghostbusters, and Christine all the real deal cars looking just like they did when they were featured in the movies. Fans were treated to some look a-likes in the form of Batman, Cat-woman, Batgirl, Green Hornet, Kato, even Grandpa Munster made a trip back to attend the show. From the movie Christine actor Malcolm Danare who played “Moochie” spent the weekend at the Dead Man’s Curve Wild Card Weekend talking with fans about the movie as well as taking photos and signing autographs. The fine folks at Grundy Insurance, POR-15, Rez Beverages, Racing Junk and Lucas Oil helped put on the show along with getting some fine vintage race cars on display. A nice selection of funny cars and dragsters were on hand greeting fans and taking them all back to a real cool time in drag racing. Al Liebmann along with the folks at Dead Man’s Curve work very hard on putting this collection of cars together. During the three day run of the event DJ Fun-Zul and the Golden Gup kept everyone moving and grooving playing some great classic tunes. A great selection of bands played as well with Shifty and the Gears and the Sharkskins were just two of the many bands. The Liberty Belles out of Pennsylvania put together a great pin up girl contest which kept everyone entertained at the event as well. There were pin stripers and vendors as well on hand with all sorts of cool stuff that folks could pick up. With the first Dead Man’s Curve Wild Card Weekend in the books everyone in the club are hard at working planning for next year’s event. There is no doubt with the continued success of the Dead Man’s Curve Wild Hot Rod Weekend in Mahwah, New Jersey it will not be long before the Dead Man’s Curve Car Club take over Atlantic City, New Jersey in the same record setting fashion. So in 2020 everyone needs to make their plans to attend both the Wild Hot Rod Weekend in Mahwah, New Jersey as well as the Wild Card Weekend in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Both shows provide a great show that will appeal to all no matter what your age or your car interest. Dead Man’s Curve Car Club shows are full out family fun so check them out. ~ John

PUMPKIN RUN RETURNS TO FLEMINGS AUTO PARTS Photos and story by John McCartney
F
or 23 years the gates of Fleming’s Auto Parts have swung open to the public for the Pumpkin Run. Fans of the show American Pickers might recall this place as it was featured on a number of episodes where Mike and Frank came to check out all the goodies found inside. Well, before Mike and Frank ever stepped foot inside Harry Fleming thought it would be great to have a show once a year and allow everyone to come out to what many feel is a cool party. After a few years away from its home the Pumpkin Run returned to the little town called Egg Harbor Township in New Jersey. Flemings Auto Parts is located just a short distance from Atlantic City and the allure of this event attracts close to ten thousand fans and well over four to five thousand cars. Fans start coming into the Pumpkin Run well before the sun even comes up looking to take part in the event. Once inside fans are treated to all type of cars from muscle cars, customs, hot rods, rat rods, vintage race cars, big rigs, steam engines just so much cool stuff to check out during the day. In addition to all the great show

cars that come and take part it is a must to check out all the junk cars that are stored inside. Folks cannot believe what they see at each and every turn and try to imagine what could be done to save these classics. There is so much great pieces of automotive history everywhere it is a real treasure hunt with the fans being the true winners. A great display of vintage race cars from the many circle track in New Jersey is on display in one area and comes complete with two cool museums. Fans enjoy taking a look at all the great race cars from back in the day. All these cars are displayed in front of some great old style buildings. There is a real full size diner an old school organ inside of a cool building. Everywhere you look there is classic vintage signs, all sorts of pieces of New Jersey history which changes each and every year. Fans coming into the show they are greeted by a giant automotive flea market filled with all sorts of great items just wanting to be snapped up and taken home. There are many great food vendors all around as well to help everyone fuel up to keep them moving around the show. A real cool steam engine makes rounds through the grounds with a giant steam whistle letting everyone know the engine is coming. A giant pumpkin canon fires pumpkins into the field all day as well as jet engine mounted on the back of a classic ramp truck. There is a dj playing classic tunes all day as well as band playing really great music all day long. Folks line up for hours to take home one of the classic Pumpkin Run t-shirts.

The Pumpkin Run is one really fun day it is very hard to see everything inside as Flemings Auto Parts keeps changing and adding new items each and every year. Even with all the new stuff or just the classic items already on display it is a show everyone needs to check out. Pitt’s ‘36 Ford Coupe Massillon, OH.
I purchased this all steel ’36 Ford coupe in 1967 while in the Army. It was setting in the desert in Tucson, Arizona. At the time it had a 389 Pontiac engine with three deuces and a Chevy 3 speed along with a 390 Oldsmobile rear end. After many years of work, it now has a Ford 302 engine equipped with Edelbrock Performer Cam and Lifters, along with Edelbrock Performer 600 carburetor. It has Hooker Ceramic Headers. The transmission is a Ford AOD. The front end is a Mustang II Independent Suspension with power Rack and Pinion. The rear end is a Chevy 355 gear with drum brakes. The interior is all leather by Portage Trim. The paint is one of its best features done by my buddy, Rocky. The wheels are 15” California smoothies with baby moons. It is a joy to drive and has won many trophies as well as being on the cover of Cruisin’ Times, the July 2006 edition and on the turn table at Summit Racing. I am still the proud owner of this car.

What a Rough Day..
I
have had my vehicle for 5 years and have kept very good care of it. I have washed it over the years probably 200 times (Literally at least 1 -2 times per week) and I have kept the paint looking as good as possible. One day, I took it in for service and when I picked it up, there was some sort of coating all over it. Over-spray from something was now dotted all over the paint, glass and trim and my super smooth finish now sounded like sandpaper as I rubbed my hand back and forth. This coating, whatever it was falls into a category within the automotive car care aftermarket called “industrial fall-out”. This is when particles of steel, iron and the like, usually from factories become airborne, land on surfaces of all types, including your vehicle and when it rains, they start to rust. You may have seen little orange or brownish type dots on a white finish from time to time? Many people mistake this for tar, when in fact, it’s something that has now become embedded in your finish. Back in the 1997ish timeframe one of the greatest inventions in automotive car detailing started to become popular. It’s called the Clay Bar. Originally made from modeling clay, once this “clay”
substance was rubbed back and forth on the vehicles surface using soap and water or an actual product called Clay Lube, it would shear off anything not part of the original paint job and that is what I had to do to get rid of my problem. The steps are to wash your vehicle, clay any area that is rough, then you can clean, polish and wax your finish, while getting the best depth and gloss. Clay bars are easy to use and soap and water is a very inexpensive clay lube. You’ll want to work on a cool surface and use your clay lube of choice to help the clay bar glide across the surface. Make sure to knead your bar to continue to expose fresh clay and if you drop it on the ground, make sure there isn’t any debris stuck to it, that will scratch it pretty good. Use a microfiber cloth to wipe up the clay lube as you work and wait till you see and feel the results! Happy Detailing!
