Thompson Gasser Reunion Photos and story by Joe Secka The 2020 season was not very friendly for the racing and car cruise communities. Covid-19 and politicians reared up their heads and closed down numerous events. Whether or not it was justified may never be determined. The Gasser Reunion, normally a June date at Thompson Raceway Park, was pushed back to September and run in conjunction with the Gasser Nationals event.

Despite any frustration everyone had experienced earlier in the season, this event was full of energy, competition and celebration. Thompson has always been a great host for the gasser family and this event continued with that tradition. The car counts may have been down a little and Cruisin’ Times Magazine did not have the Drag Racing Legends participating for obvious reasons. However, a nice collection of hot rods, customs and resto-rods were on display along the fence on the North side of the track. And the vintage gassers, several dragsters, altereds and other classes certainly tested out the track throughout the day and into the evening hours. I can remember many visits to Thompson back in the ‘60s. Some of the race cars have an authentic history attached to them and others are a remake of a racer that once chased down the quarter mile in a bygone era. Gassers hold a special place in the hearts of those who were around back in the 50s through the 70s. And that impact has evolved with the subsequent generations of drag racers and their fans. Straight axles, parallel leaf springs, superchargers reaching skyward out of the hoods, wide drag slicks resting outside of cut out quarter panels are the norm for these competitors’ machines.

As the sun starts to set to the West and eliminations get underway, the tire smoke begins takes on an amber glow as each pair heats up their slicks. Some of the gassers bring along BUGs (back up girls) to help align the racer onto the stickiest part of the track and to add a “show time” flair to the event. All eyes then focus on the timing tree anticipating the “green” only to be followed by loud, bellowing exhaust, wheel stands and an occasional wheel hop as they race to the finish line. I don’t know how anyone could get tired of seeing this activity! Maybe it’s just me, but the Gasser Reunion brings back more memories from the sixties than any other event I have been to. Well, I suppose you need to be somewhat beyond middle-aged to have memories from that era. Yeah, I’m not sure how I can share that with you! The 2020 edition will be here sooner than you realize! Gassers, front engine and modern dragsters, altereds, nostalgia super stocks and more will be entertaining the fans for sure. Here is hoping that this year’s event will go on as scheduled along with everything that makes our summers special! There will be plenty to see and plenty to do! very year in the Fall, the Thunder Capital of Ohio comes alive with the sounds and action surrounding the annual Cruisin’ Times Magazine Gasser Reunion! This story tells of one of the largest of these events that featured many of the folks responsible for the beginnings of the Gasser movement that still carries on year after year! These people were members of the S&S Racing Team from the East Coast. Part of this power belonged to the locals who hung out with them and were insturmental in their success throughout the sixties and seventies. People like Dave Hales, Fred Bear, Gene Altizer, Pork Zartman, Barb Hamilton, Nancy Leonello, and Al and Don Nosse all toured and won time after time!!! It’s with the spirit of these amazing pioneers in mind that the 2010 Gasser Reunion brought a couple of hundred of Northern Ohio’s most accomplished dragster builders and racers out for a big celebration! What follows on the next few pages are the images of the people that showed up and the cars that they brought to compete with! In another time and space I would name everyone, but that isn’t now since it was over ten years ago and I know there are only a couple of names I can remember! Island Dragway Celebrates Sixty Great Years of Drag Racing Photos and story by John McCartney
B
ack in the day the radio was filled with classic ads screaming about funny cars coming to your local drag strip. When these ads were on folks seemed to make a point to come out and check out this iconic cars at drag strips such as Island Dragway located in Great Meadow, New Jersey. This year marks the 60th year that Island Dragway has been holding drag races at this famed drag strip. Over their storied historic past many a funny car show has taken place at the track. So It comes as no surprise that funny cars make it a point to come out and take part each and every year as part of their Ol’Daze nostalgia event which serves as a way to celebrate each and every of Island Dragway’s birthdays. Funny Cars of shapes and styles came out to lend their support to Melissa and Carl Milano who own and operate Island Dragway. Whether it be nitro or blown on alcohol they were on display doing long burnouts and racing side by side. When all the smoke cleared George Reidnauer took the win in the blown alcohol class over Krista Massarella. M&H Tires and DJ Safety stepped up to the plate and helped sponsor the burnout awards which were awarded in each round. The winners of these awards came in the form of two great smokey burnouts laid down by the Time Bomb and Fireball Monza funny cars. S&W sponsored the low et and top speed awards which were won by Joe Morrison behind the wheel of the Super Camaro. The very special Rocky Roxlau Determination Award was presented to the entire Time Bomb Vega funny car team for their hard work to make round two after a little event in round one. A trio of nitro funny cars filled the air of Island Dragway with the great smell of nitro and they came in the form of the cars owned and raced by Keith Davidson, Bill Dee and Chuck Exton each one laying down great burnouts dry hops and all the cool stuff from back in the glory days of drag racing and funny car match race wars.

The great folks from North East Timing Organization (NETO) were on hand racing at Island Dragway on the day as well. On this day the winners came in the form of Mike Grafas over Vinny Laurita in NETO Comp. With Vinny Laurita picking up the best reaction time award in NETO Comp with his .024 reaction time. While over in NETO Nostalgia class Jerry Hillier picked up the win over Steve Pirritano. The best reaction time in NETO Nostalgia class went to Steve Consentino with a great .013 reaction time to pick up the award. In addition to all the great racing action that took place on the famed Island Dragway there was huge car show. For inside the car show fans could check out all sorts of cars spanning the many decades that Island Dragway has been in operation. From customs, hot rods, muscle cars, vintage race cars all on display for folks to look at and check out and perhaps take them back in time and place when things were just a bit more fun and easier. On display in the staging lanes Tom Brown brought out a 1965 Corvair funny car. This car was owned by Tom’s dad Al Brown was the first track manger of Island Dragway when it first opened up back in the early sixties. Looking just like it did back in the day plans are to get the car restored and hopefully back on the track to make perhaps a pass or two in the future. With all of the restrictions that are in place because of Covid-19 Island Dragway made sure that they stayed within all of the social distance guidelines that are in place in state of New Jersey. All that came out to take part in the event made sure to wear a mask and keep six feet apart while enjoying a fun day at Island Dragway. It was a great day to celebrate another great year of hosting drag races at famed Island Dragway as they have done for the past sixty years. ~John

The Kids are Alright
H
ow many times do you start out doing something and a family member, friend or a complete stranger comes up giving their thoughts (opinions) on what you’re doing and, all of a sudden, your original plan morphs into something so elaborate you can’t remember what your original concept was? You start out intending to paint your car red. Friend stops by, “Man, if you did two-tone this would be ‘killer’. Another buddy stops by, “Oh, with the lines of this car, scallops would really set it off. After a few more people and suggestions, you’re now into panel-paint, lace, candy, and lettering all over your ‘red car’. Similar thing occurred in our Choppers Show pedal car area. It started out as an area filled with pedal cars and wagons. Well, the participants started stretching the envelope right from the start. My ‘vision’ was a little area next to our coloring and model building area with good old-fashion pedal cars and pull-along wagons. Silly me !
As soon as people could register, the ‘morphing’ began. We started receiving pictures of motorized wagons and cars, next was a minibike, and then came a 12-foot long Radio Flyer wagon that is street legal!!! At first, I was a little cranky at seeing my vision turning into something else, but after thinking on it (and flushing a little ego) I realized that this was a great thing. As we staged all these wild contraptions into the area you couldn’t help but notice each one for what it was…somebody else’s visions. The time, dollars, engineering and skill that went into
these is awesome. And we also had a good share of original pedal cars and wagons which had the same work into them whether stock restoration or full-blown customization. Everyone of these folks and their vehicles deserves to be seen and appreciated. Adding all flavors of “mini-vehicles” actually added a cool variety of things for show attendees to enjoy. This area is also a ‘Kids Vote Only” area. We just tell the kids to pick their favorite, regardless if it has a motor, wings, 15-color paint job…just whatever one trips that kids trigger. And surprisingly, the top votegetters/winners for ‘Original’ and ‘Modified’ were basic pedal car power along with a cool wagon. Kids just pick what they like, and you never know what grabs their attention. So, after a bit more thought I realized that calling the area the ‘pedal cars and wagons’ area just wasn’t gonna cut it. I want to continue to add wild, crazy, motorized, pedal, push, drag vehicles to this little world. So moving forward for next year’s show, folks will be turning in registrations for the ‘It’s a Small World’ area, and YES, we will continue on as a ‘Kids Only Vote’. WARNING: If you are a hard-core trophy seeker, this may not be for you because this area belongs to the kids. They don’t care how much money, time sweat you have in that beauty, They just ‘know what they like. Deal with it!
