Interesting Facts

There are 280 million registered vehicles in the US. Trucks are the most popular vehicle type, with 170,239,357 private and commercial truck registrations in 2022, compared to 98,573,935 vehicle registrations for cars.

Washington D.C. has the lowest rate of car ownership with only about 47% of households owning a vehicle. North Carolina has the highest with over 90% of households owning at least one car.

26.2% of the cars on the road are white, 21.8% are black. 8.2% are red.

In 2023, it cost $12,182 a year, or $1,015 a month, to own and operate a new car. Taking into account the total cost of ownership (purchase, fuel, maintenance, insurance), Ohio is the least expensive state to own a car.

There are currently 4,217,423 miles of public road in the US. 133,655 miles of new road have been added since 2010. Texas has the most miles of public road at 323,364 miles, followed by California (182,103) and Illinois (146,010).

According to bts.gov, gasoline taxes by state range from 1/3 cents per gallon in Utah to 61.1 cents per gallon in Pennsylvania. Ohio has a 38.5 cents per gallon tax. There is a federal tax of 18.4 cents per gallon which applies to all states.

About 368.63 million gallons of gasoline are consumed each day in the US.

GREENVILLE PA HERITAGE DAYS SUPER CRUISE

The Heritage Days Super Cruise celebrated its 16th year, taking place on July 1, one week before the Greenville Heritage Days Festival. Since its inception, organizer Bill Sumners has rallied as many as seven hundred cars along Main Street, as thousands of spectators fill the streets to view these historic treasures! Classic cars of every description will line up to show off their wheels while 5 DJ’s entertain spectators along with epic prizes, 50/50 raffle. There is music from the top of the hill all the way to downtown!

This event is billed as the Largest Free Car Show in Northwest Pa. National notoriety has followed this event for several years now. A TV crew covers the event for the Lokar Car Show on Motor Trend TV complete with an appearance by Sam Mahdavi of TV’s Sam’s Garage. No pre-registration is required for exhibitors, they just need to show up on the day of the event. The first two hundred cars to register at the show on July 1 receive a FREE CRUISE T-SHIRT!

The show’s trophies are unique and a coveted collectible if not also being drinkable. Two hundred bottles of Super Cruise wine are prepared in specially designed bottles. The Hollywood Knights Car Club picks the Heritage Days Great Eight with each selected receiving a Great Eight Mechanics jacket. The Grand Prize winner also receives a Professional Cartoon Artists drawing of their car, a Mechanic’s jacket and their vehicle will be featured on the event t-Shirt the following year.

PASSING THE HOBBY DOWN TO THE NEXT GENERATION

From a very early age I remember going to car shows with my father and I always wanted a show car. My 92 year old great aunt had a 72 Monte Carlo with a 350 in the garage that she never used. It had a radio delete, plastic on the seats and painted in mint green with a white vinyl top. I was too young to purchase it at her estate but that was the only classic in our family.

In 1998, I ordered a new Pontiac Grand Prix (GM Option 1 from my grandfather, this was prior to GMS). The car was never built due to a strike at the plant but Cole Valley Motors in Warren, OH had a brand new Grand Prix Daytona 500 Pace Car “special edition” sitting in the back lot. I had never followed NASCAR but the car was awesome. It had the Daytona 500 medium gulf blue (only car that had that color in 1998 were the pace cars), special wheels, badging, SLP Ram Air and each car was specifically numbered on the console. This car was 160 / 1500 and only 1 of 200 or so builds with a sunroof. At the disapproval of my parents, I purchased this car before graduated college (yes I paid for it). I finally had a special car that people would come up to and ask about. I drove it to A&W the first Friday I had it and everyone came over to see it.

Later that year, I met a gentleman in upstate New York, Paul Cwiklinski, who had a Daytona 500 GP also and was starting Pace Car Club of America. I joined and thought it would be cool to be in this car club, but had no idea how life changing it would be. This was no ordinary car club. Paul had this club licensed by ISC (International Speedway Corp) and we were invited to nationally televised Cup races around the country. The Club was affiliated with Make-AWish and we provided that once in a life time experience of driving around a NASCAR track (Parade Lap) before a Cup Race on national TV to the children who “wished” for seeing a NASCAR Race. After the race, certain tracks allowed us to take the kids out for Hot Laps which was an experience. Rockingham was the most open about doing this and you could go up on the banking. Daytona limited us to the bottom on the track. We were guests at MIS, Watkins Glenn, Daytona, Rockingham, Richmond, and Talladega.

Unfortunately, as Pontiac pulled out of racing and the division was being dissolved, so was the club. But the memories and hobby was passed down to the next generation. Paul’s son, Greg Cwiklinski, is a mechanic / pit crew member of a NASCAR team and both of my son’s

Matthew and Will Paczak, have 1998 Grand Prix Pace Cars. Matt’s car is 330 / 1500 and won second place at the Pontiac Nationals last year in its class. Will was able to find an actual 1998 Daytona Pace Car that was purchased by NASCAR Café in 1999 and used as an event and display car. This is the white grand prix you will see at car shows with the strobe lights and other modifications that were made on the car to be used on a NASCAR track. I personally still own my 1998 GP Pace Car Edition and it only has 39K clicks on the odometer. Years from now, will this car hold the same stature at shows as 69 Camaro Pace Car? Only time will tell.

I wanted to share the back story behind why we have 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix Pace Cars and why the Road Crew drives them to shows that CTM covers. Matt holds the record of being the youngest Pace Car Club member to be on a NASCAR track. He was less than 2 years old, and in the back of the grand prix in a car seat facing backwards. Security setting us up on the track, looked in the car and said “I know I didn’t just see a baby in the back seat” and flagged us forward. Top speed was 10 miles per hour, so everything was safe. This was his start in the automotive hobby!

Brian’s 1963 Impala

This just happened to me the other day. I took my 1963 Impala to the Medina Cars and coffee show on Sunday morning. I took a thirty minute 2 way trip on the highway. After the show I stopped at a friend’s house and was there until 5pm. He lives a minute from the freeway, but at the last moment I decided to take the city streets home instead. About a mile away from my friend’s house I realized I forgot my jacket. So I headed back. When I turned around in a parking lot, my car dropped and something started dragging. I thought I blew a tire and the exhaust was dragging. But I looked and the tire was fine. When I looked under the car and I saw the spring laying sideways!

After a few minutes on the phone with AAA their computerized system and the loud traffic noise, I noticed a body shop about 500’ feet away. There were three men standing outside talking. I started walking towards them and one of the men started walking towards me. He asked me what was wrong. I said my spring popped out. His reply was “you’re kiddin!”. The car was on a very busy 4 lane street. This man named Rick looked under the car and says he will pop it back in. I ask him how much and he said $100. Of course I said yes. But I did not have the money on me. He schrugged that off and went to get the tools and a friend Brian and they drug what used to be a old 4 wheel floor jack, which is now a 3 wheel down the road 500’ feet along with a bunch of cribbing, jack stands, and spud bars.

Rick and Brian started working on the car and then they realized they needed a spring compressor. So they went to the auto parts and got one. They came back and they work on the car for about 2+ hours on the busy street as I directed traffic around them. After a few arm scrapes and a few good quality all American mechanical cuss words, they finally got it. There was nothing rusted, bent or broke. My guess is that it was never put in properly when replaced. They did a good job. I went on and off the curb to check it.

Rick and I drove over to my friend’s house to get the money. And of course, I gave him more than what he wanted. And he did not want to accept at all. I told him look, it’s Sunday afternoon. I broke down and you fixed it right there on the spot and I was able to drive at home with no problem at all. It’s good to know there are some damn good people in this world still. They wouldn’t even let me roll the tire 6’ back to them to put it on. I almost wanted to rub my hands in the dirt just to get dirty. The name of The Body Shop. Is West Coast Autobody and Sales located at 3559 W 140 in Cleveland, Ohio. I saw their work and they do excellent work. But more than anything, they are darn good noble human beings. So hats off to West Coast Autobody and Rick and Brian, where could you break down on a Sunday afternoon and have your car repaired on the spot, very reasonable, And drive home. In fact. I believe they probably would have done it for nothing if they had to. So thanks again, Rick and Brian for everything you’ve done. Bless you. And the big guy upstairs. On monday, a friend of mine said I hear you had bad luck. I told him I had more good luck than bad. In fact i’m glad it happened. I got the opportunity to meet a couple real down to earth Good guys!

1935 Ford 5 Window Coupe (Model 48), 2 tone blue/grey with fenders matching the interior, and rumble seat. Side engine compartment panels are included, but not shown. A Southern California hot rod up until late Spring of 2015. Vehicle is a rolling chassis minus the flathead V-8, T-5 transmission, and drive shaft, as they are in the process of being rebuilt for a new hotrod project. Built in 2010. it has a Henry Ford steel body, rust free, coming from a CA dry environment. Stock frame, with a Ford 8”/ 3.50 ratio (from a Grenada I believe), ”Posie” rear suspension (leaf springs, shocks and anti sway bar), and a Mustang II front end with chrome coils and shocks. The vehicle is setup with a TBI EFI fuel system with Mega Squirt II software on a laptop that handled 21988 Ford Escort TBI’s (a custom 2010 EFI setup) that was on the Flathead V-8 ( minimal work is needed for a newer up to date EFI setup), Southern Air AC, and a reinforced trans mount for a modern transmission (stick or automatic). Build completion was in 2010, and a CA appraisal (comes with sale) had the vehicle valued at $44,000. The vehicle just needs either a Chevy 350 or a Ford 302 V8, including a manual or automatic transmission, radiator, correct engine mounts and a driveshaft for a nice cruiser. If you want to install your own flathead, I’ll include the radiator and intake manifold with the 2 -1988 Ford Escort TBI’s that it was running with, so only a T-5 trans or a Ford C4 automatic with an adapter kit and a drive shaft is needed to be up and running. With the current stock frame, this vehicle is meant as a cruiser and NOT as a muscle machine. A muscle machine would require a new high performance frame. $31,000.00 / no trades. 216-524-2006. Ken
