T
he “Festivals of Speed” was founded by Joe Sabatini in 2004 and has a deep history of hosting luxury events. Historically, typical Festivals of Speed events feature some of the world’s finest luxury lifestyle products, services, and cars. The Festivals of Speed group stages shows in several locations across Florida and Georgia including Orlando, St Petersburg, Ocala and Atlanta. Although these shows are billed as luxury style motorsports events, you can expect to find official race cars, muscle cars, classics or unique motorcycles along with the supercars, exotics and vintage pre-war, and post-war collectibles. The 17th annual St Petersburg show took place in beautiful Vinoy Park across from the historic Vinoy Renaissance St. Petersburg Resort & Golf Club. The newly remodeled St. Pete Pier extends out into Tampa Bay providing an amazing backdrop for the show as well as a magnificent view of the bay and a vibrant downtown. An excellent selection of restaurants was within walking distance for anyone who was hungry.

You will find the badging of Porsche, Ferrari, RollsRoyce, Lamborghini, Aston-Martin, BMW, Mercedes and McLaren mixed in with Corvette, Camaro, Mustang, Cadillac and others. There are always some unique and interesting vehicles on display. This year I was especially intrigued by a fantastic, original, one owner 1978 Mustang Fastback and a Range Rover sporting LS power. The Richard Petty Superbird, a Sox & Martin Hemi Plymouth and a nitro funny car attracted a lot of viewers. Great trophies were presented to class winners. Volkswagen Double Cab Pickup

Syracuse Nationals Roars Back Photos and story by John McCartney
T
he Syracuse Nationals looked to bounce back to the giant gathering of cars and people that it always drew in the past. This comes after being forced to cancel the 2020 edition of the event due to the Covid-19 restrictions that were in place. However this year all the roar and excitement once again filled the Syracuse Fair Grounds in Syracuse, New York. Rob O’Connor and his entire staff at Right Coast Inc. worked very hard to get the show back on track and that is just what they did. Of course there were some small changes that needed to be made this year but for the most part the 2021 edition of the Syracuse Nationals looked and felt like it did in all of the past presentations of the show. All of the past favorites that everyone enjoyed in the past returned. For the second time in the history of the Syracuse Nationals the brand new Exposition Center played host to the Syracuse Signature Showcase presented by the Maguire Family of Dealerships. Inside this giant hall folks could find all sorts of cool cars. One set of six which are know as the Winfield Select Six presented by Mequiars make up some of the best and coolest customs around. All of these cars selected by famed custom car builder Gene Winfield do battle to see who will take home the top cash prize and other goodies. While the top of the heap gets the big cash prize all of the entries go home with cash and prizes as the five runner ups also take home awards as well. New for this year was the Syracuse Charity Brush Bash which is made up of some of the top pinstripe and airbrush artists from around the world. All of these talented folks come together

and spend the run of the event creating one of a kind masterpieces of art. Each and everyday all of the art work that is produced is then auctioned off and all the money goes to the Ronald McDonald House of Central New York. This year all of these great artists were able to donate a great sum of $41,017 dollars to Ronald McDonald House of Central New York. Also folks could check out great exotics, customs and even the Monkee Mobile and the Red Baron customs from back in the day. Sparky’s Rockabilly Roundup was back once again keeping Sparky’s memory alive and well. It was the famous Sparky that started the Round up many years ago and it remains one of the must see parts of the show. A great swap meet, pin up girl contest, Backyard Build Off, great Rockabilly bands and a full display of some of the wildest hot rods, rat rods and tons of other cool cars on display. World famous tv star Big Schwag keeps the entire Sparky’s Rockabilly Roundup moving along as he serves as the host during the run of the show. A few new items were added this year and one of the most popular was Nitro Row sponsored in part by Racing Junk. com and the Dead Man’s Curve Car Club. The leader and ring leader of the Nitro Row is Al Liebmann who put together a great collection of nostalgia race cars. All of the cars fired up together several times each and every day much to the enjoyment of all the fans that lined up to hear and feel the roar, sound and smell of the cars as they ran their powerful engines. A full size drag strip was set up and served as the home for the very first R/C No Prep Drags which featured 1/10th Mini Muscle Cars doing battle. Memories on Main

Street also made a debut this year. This display featured a fine selection of classics, antiques, muscle cars along with a big display of vintage fire trucks. There was a place for the ladies to check out inside of what is known as Women’s World. Mini Nationals provided a place for the talented folks that can build all of those cool car models a place to display their unique build for folks to check out. With the 2021 Syracuse Nationals in the books and going off in a big way while making sure to keep everyone safe and well during the run of the show, you can count on one thing. Everyone at Right Coast Inc. under the leadership of Rob O’Connor are working hard at making plans for the 2022 edition of the Syracuse Nationals at the Syracuse Fairgrounds even bigger and better. I
n life, ever so rarely a person come’s into your world that makes an impression on your own life. Mike Jusek was such a man. I remember the first day I was invited to the Choppers Hot Rod Association club house to sit in on a meeting. The first thing I saw was the guy (Mike) squeezing this Cadillac 472 V-8 into this little old 1937 Nash. Well, that didn’t take me long to introduce myself, and our friendship started. Right from the start Mike made me feel at home. That whole time we talked I didn’t even know he was the President of the club. We were just two guys talkin’ cars. As I got to know Mike better, I found he was very much a family man. He always involved his wife and children in conversations, and many Choppers events. So needless to say Mike had two families, his second family was The Choppers Hot Rod Association of which he was the President. In fact, Mike embodied what the club is. He was a car guy all his life with the passion that showed it. Mike was a great president and a big part of the Choppers car show every April. He was always a judge at the flag girl contest at the Rock N Race at Dragway 42. He also wrote many monthly articles in the Cruisin Times Magazine. And who could forget his stuffed cabbage at the Choppers annual Christmas party. Mike, along with some of us manned the Choppers booth at the Cleveland Piston Powered IX Autorama for several years. I will always remember those times. Mike would sew a name patch on his shirt that said Marvin, and he would jokingly introduce himself as Marvin. This was an inside Marvin The Martian joke. You kind of get an idea what a fun guy Mike was to be around.

Mike also took care of business at the club, sometimes it was tough love, but Mike always had the best interest of the club at heart. I will always remember this past September 2021, Mike sat with me behind my ’54 Oldsmobile at a car show in Cleveland. He knew what was going to happen at that point in time, but never asked for sympathy. Ask anyone in the club. What a strong man. A good example for the rest of us. That day he was excited because he and his family and family from out of town were going to little Italy for dinner. That’s the happy Mike that I remember. So in closing, all I can say is that Mike will be loved and missed by his family and friends, and his second family, Choppers Hot Rod Association. The world was a better place from 6-20-58 to 11-19-21 and now heaven is a better place with Mike. A good thought is that Mike is with past family and friends. If I were lucky enough to get to heaven where Mike is, we will know him right away as he’s probably leaning on his Nash with a cup of coffee, smoking a cigarette, and a bag of Oreo’s on the hood. Larry’s 2018 LS3 Mazda MX-5 Chardon, Ohio. I’ve had a number of cars over the years, but at 81 years old, I decided that I wanted a “show car”. Not one that you would see regularly at car shows, though; I wanted something so different that people would say “How did they do THAT?!” When I saw a company in Colorado named “Flyin’ Miata’ was building Mazda Miatas with LS engines, I called and discussed what I wanted. I then bought a 2018 Mazda MX-5 and shipped it to Colorado. Approximately 6 months later, it was returned, but was no longer rated a 155 horsepower Mazda, but a 525 horsepower LS3 Chevy Performance Miata. It has a 6-spd Tremec Magnum Transmission, Wilwood Brakes, Camaro starter, new Hydo steering, Corvette clutch, custom dual fan radiator, Moroso aluminum oil pan and drive shaft, Fox suspension with Eibach coil overs. It LOOKS like an MX-5, but when I drive into show with the mufflers open, heads turn and a crowd forms, waiting for me to open the hood. And yes, they all ask “How did they do THAT?!”

1963 Buick Skylark Convertible in red. Older restoration with new seats, carpet, top and paint. No rust and the paint shows well even with a few scrapes and nicks on the body.
