Randomly Speaking Colds..
T
his particular winter was brutal. I don’t know if it really was as cold and snowy as they say or we’re just getting that much older and more grumpy. I often wondered at what magical age we start complaining about the weather, maybe this is it? I feel sorry for all our fellow cruisers who had colds this winter. Everyone seems to be coughing and sneezing. Sometimes you’re able to get through the season without one, but Mother Nature always has a way with showing us who’s boss. I thought I finally got a winter under my our belt without a cold and wammo... I got one. You get to the drug store to see if they’ve come up with that miracle cure for it yet, they haven’t. Drugstores have shelves full of new and improved medicines for colds. We’ve all tried them. I’m even a member of the “Walgreen’s Cold Club” - Two more colds and I get a free hot water bottle or free Vicks VapoRub! Believe it or not, sometimes I buy a particular medicine that I know doesn’t work, thinking I got a bad batch the year before, because they use the words “New and Improved”. They are new, but trust me, they’re never improved. They also seem to be using more “vague” words than ever before, but because our eyes are watering, they figure we’ll never see it. Words like, “remedies” instead of “cures.” It’s not “relief”, it’s “temporary relief”. And it doesn’t relieve your cold, it relieves “symptoms” of a cold. They all have variations like “maximum strength”. Well, of course who wants minimum strength? That’s like asking John Force if he’s got enough horsepower. Give me everything ya got Tylenol, don’t hold back! Some say it’s “Cherry Flavored” and others say it has a “Grape” taste. Who can taste anything when you have a cold?

Even bad tasting medicine tastes good... well maybe not, but you get the point. In fact I took the Cherry flavored stuff to a test lab and they said there’s no flavoring in it, it’s all mind over matter. They said, “You want it to taste Cherry flavored because when you first ate a Cherry, it was summer and you didn’t have a cold,” Makes sense to me. I always think that the most expensive medicine is going to be the best. It’s not. They always come in the smallest packages too. One year I did the reverse. I bought the Walgreen’s brand maximum strength, nondrowsy which compares to the active ingredient in the most expensive ones.. It was on sale, (2) for $1.99. So I bought a package for everyone in the family, and put one in each desk in the office as well. It didn’t work any better than the most expensive brand, I still got drowsy, but at least everyone thinks I thought I was being considerate of their needs. Inevitability people will ask if you’ve seen a doctor yet. Doctors can’t help a cold. They tell you to go home, drink plenty of fluids and get lots of rest. When you run your own business, there’s no going home, ya play hurt and that’s that. Besides, when you call for an appointment at this time of year, you can’t get in for 2 weeks. By then your cold will be over with. And why is it that Doctors never get sick. Is it because most play golf every week and the fresh air keeps them healthy? Back when I was a kid and we got sick, it didn’t seem as bad. I got to stay home, slept in, ate soup and my Mom rubbed that stinky “Vicks Vapo-Rub on my chest. I’ve only got one more visit to Walgreen’s and with any luck I’ll win the Vapo-Rub! ...course that’s just me randomly speaking.

John Reddinger, a retired autoworker, has always been a GM guy but with a special attraction for the Oldsmobile. His first new car was a 1966 Olds 442 which he traded in for a more practical model when he got married in late 1967. Moving

forward twenty years to 1990 and John was able to purchase another ’66 Olds 442 and proceeded to restore it to its former glory status. While the “new” 442 provided a lot of enjoyment, John felt a yearning for something from the fifties. He was scanning through a classic car mag when he saw a feature story on a 1957 Olds 88 and almost immediately knew that year/model was the one he just had to have. He took advantage of the internet and located

one for sale on EBay with a Texas owner. Enlisting the assistance of good friend, Don Prokop, he was successful in placing the winning bid. He then arranged for transportation of his “new” Olds 88 up to its new Ohio home in late 2004. While the car was fairly solid, it did need a full restoration. He selected John Goddard to complete the restoration and updates. The normal sheet metal repairs were scheduled and a new grille was fabricated to fit into the stock front bumper. John decided
it was also important to make the car more travel friendly and chose to update the drive train and front suspension. A Chevy 454 using an Edelbrock 750 and Performer intake along with Hedman headers boosted the power out to over 400 horsepower. A Street Fighter 700 R4 Trans by TCI gets the power back to the stock rear end through a custom driveshaft from Broadway Service in John’s hometown, Girard, Oh.

Ride and handling improvements were achieved with the installation of a Mustang II front suspension with disc brakes. Steering is via a Mustang II rack & pinion connected to an Ididit tilt column and shifter at the driver’s end. John’s ’57 hits the road with Coker American Classic Radials mounted onto 15x6 US Wheel Chrome Smoothie rims. When it was time for paint, John scoured the PPG color books before finally selecting the orange and grey combination seen in the photos. Guy Shively added the two-color pinstripping and graphic accents. John wanted to pay special recognition to the late John Goddard for the huge part he played in transforming the Olds 88 to its current state. The interior and trunk areas were stitched up by Bob at J’s Upholstery in Rootstown, OH. The build began in early 2005 and was completed in late 2006, encompassing twenty-two months of effort and patience. John takes full advantage of his decision to build a comfortable ride and drives it about four days a week in the summer by regularly traveling to numerous local and regional cruises. But longer distances are no problem either as he took part in the Hot Rod Power Tour in 2014. Trips to the Goodguys show in Columbus, OH and five trips to NSRA’s show in Louisville, KY, including the 50th Anniversary edition, are already in the travel log as well. John estimates he has put over 30K miles on the ’57 and often travels to shows with his gearhead buddies, Jerry Higgins and Don Prokop. Even though the original build was finished several years ago, the paint finish and detailing are immaculate and certainly attract attention wherever this Oldsmobile goes. Regular visits to Mike’s Prestige Detailing keeps the Olds in “show ready” condition. John now puts a “Do Not Judge” sign on the dash, but he has received many trophies including a 1st place piece that impressively sits in his grandson’s bedroom. A special highlight for John was when the car received positive comments from Clay Tober, a well-known ’57 Olds expert. BTW: John says he wouldn’t change a thing as he loves the car just the way it is! That’s all I’ve got - Joe

ack in year 2000, Frank and Suzi Latin wanted to show appreciation for their customers at Frank’s Auto Body. They decided to host a picnic and car show at their home. Space eventually became a problem and, in 2011, the show was moved to the shop in Madison, Ohio. The shop is just a stone’s throw from Lake Erie (depending on the strength of your arm) where the wind off of the lake provides a nice respite for the heat of summer. The 2018 edition of the show was also the 25th anniversary celebration of Frank being in business. Believe me when I say the place was packed! An exact number of cruisers was impossible since some did not actually register. But the estimate was around 350-400! Hot Rods, customs, muscle cars, classics, rat rods, drag racers, bikes, trucks and more filled the grounds. Helping rescue animals and the local cat and dog shelters has become a passion for both Frank and Suzi. Their show has evolved into a great fund raiser for these facilities. Money donations and shelter items are accepted and they are later combined with the results from the 50/50 raffle and the Chinese Auction. Jayson and the Mean Eyed Cats donated their band’s time while Frank from Cebars Tavern in Madison contributed by cooking for the event.

This year each of four shelters received a check in the amount of $ 2,185.00 for use towards food and medical needs. Additionally, each shelter also received a truck load of supplies. The benefiting shelters were: Ashtabula APL, Geauga County Dog Warden/Shelter, Holy Cat Whiskers and Lake County Dog Warden/Shelter. Dash plaques and goody bags were distributed to the first 200 entries and a table full of trophies was awarded to class winners. First Annual Indoor National Dragfest One Big Success Photos and story by John McCartney

or the past 18 years Darwin Doll has continued to keep the memory of the famed York Drag way in the form of the York Reunion. Darwin Doll who served as the Northeast Division One Director for many years back in the early days of drag racing. Doll looked to away to continue to grow and improve on his York Reunion and his famous Legion of Honor. So for the first time he has brought his show to winter months in the form of First Annual Indoor National Dragfest into the Lebanon Valley Expo Center in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. Fans packed into the Lebanon Valley Expo Center for two days to check out rooms and rooms filled with all sorts of cool customs, muscle cars, and off course vintage racecars. In a laid back relaxed feeling show where fans could get up close and check out all of these cool rides. Vendors were on hand as well selling all sorts of cool items. The Legion of Honor continues to honor the greats from the glory days of drag racing. This year’s class was a great selection of folks that did their part in the history of drag racing. Bob Gerdes the ringmaster of the famous Circus Custom Paints in Lyndhurst, New Jersey. Gerdes talents could be found on all of the cool drag racing cars in all of the classes for many many years. Carol Henson who was on of the early ladies that could be found behind the wheel of a funny car. Henson who’s famous Warlock Funny Cars was always a strong force on the Northeast Funny Car match race shows. Larry Kopp was a World Champion in

both Modified and the Pro Stock Truck Class over his great career in drag racing. This year’s class also featured the likes of Jay and Buck Wheatley, Rick Osborn, Tom McCrea. Folks that packed the first annual Indoor National Dragfest can look forward another great event in 2019 with York US30 Days to be held June 15-16 at the site of the famous York Drag way and York Airport. Plans call for a great two-day event to once again go back in time to relive the history of York Drag way with great display and racers who took part over the long and storied history of the drag strip. In addition plans are underway for the Second Annual Indoor National Dragfest once again to be held at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. Make sure you check out both of these events as Darwin Doll is always working hard on all of his events.

Rob ‘s ‘67 Chevelle SS Berea. OH. Here is our true 138 1967 Chevelle Super Sport that has been in the family since 1972. My Mom drove it those first 10 years and I have been the caretaker since 1982. The most recent frame off restoration brought all aspects of the car to a more modern feel but keeping with its muscle attitude. It has a 498 ci big block backed by a Muncie 21 4 speed with 3.73 gears that makes it go. Wilwood disc at the corners with Wilwood master cylinder and proportioning system to make it woa. Inside Dakota Digital handles the engine input and climate control systems with Vintage air cooling it down. My brother and I did 80% of the work you see except for the finish gaps and paint. That exceptional work was done by Bonnell’s Rod and Custom shop. It took us 7 years to get it to this beautiful family heirloom.

hursday nights between 2008 and 2014 were routinely spent sitting around a parking lot surrounding the Willoughby Hills Bakers Square Resturant! Thursdays have always held a special place in the hot rodder’s psyche due to its proximity relative to the approaching weekend. What better way is there to usher in the upcomong weekend than starting a day early? Huh? And do it at a car cruise! I’m sure everyone knows that feeling you get on certain days of the week during the Summer here on the North Coast! You look forward to at least one or two cruises every night of the week and there are good ones everywhere! There were nights on some Thursdays when you could find cars from the far west side to folks from Pennsylvania and north east Ohio! Some cruises gain that reputation over time, Bakers Square was one of those and it was great to the end! This was the feeling at the Willoughby HIlls Bakers Square Thursday Cruise week after week for many years. Sadly, all this ceased when this Bakers Square restaurant was closed! (Luckily there’s still a place to call home on the east side at the Eastlake Boulevard of 500 Flags Thursday Night Cruise... another story.) Tricks of the Trade In If you are planning on selling your vehicle, trading it in or turning in a lease, there are things you can do to make your vehicle stand out, maximizing its selling price or to keep you from getting charged for things that would have been easy to take care of when a leased vehicle is turned in or looking to sell it outright. Before you do anything, you will want to wash your vehicle. If you do not hand wash it or use the do-it-yourself coin wash, at least take it to a full service car wash to clean all the dirt and grime off there. The most important part of the car wash is to make sure that your tires and wheels are clean. This will really make the vehicle stand out and it makes the vehicle look a lot cleaner too. In addition to washing and cleaning the tires and rims, you’ll also want to make sure that there are no scuff marks on the paint. If you have scuff marks, which are often times caused by a paint transfer from a bike or from hitting the side of the garage door, you’ll want to try to remove that as well. This is easily removed using a synthetic rubbing compound found in most automotive stores. Outside of that, a thorough vacuum is necessary, so make sure to take the mats out, vacuum the floor boards, remove all trash and debris from under the seats and wipe down the dash board, instrument panel

and gear shifter area. If the carpets are soiled, use some carpet cleaner and a towel to get rid of as much dirt as possible and make sure to do the glass. Roll each window down at least 2 inches to clean the part that gets rolled up into the doorframe. And make sure to clean the trunk areas as well. Tire dressing is not that important to use for this because rather than making your vehicle looking “just detailed”, you really want to make it look well maintained, which makes the buyer feel as though you kept it in good shape. Little things like wiping down the door jambs to cleaning the cup/ coin holders, head liner (If dirty) and seats really help make a big difference too. For a couple hours worth of work, you will put yourself in a better position to make hundreds/ save hundreds and sometimes thousands of extra dollars selling your vehicle as well as saving yourself a potential cleaning charge if you are turning in a lease.
