Randomly Speaking The Getting Older Thing.. While attending a recent Reunion, I overheard some of the attendees calling it an “Old Geezers Gathering”. I Agreed, but noticed a couple of things that weren’t inherent of aging. First, the speech hadn’t slowed down at all, in fact I hadn’t noticed any slowing down when they cursed, it sounded OK to me! Secondly, their driving abilities hadn’t changes. Even still, I’m now constantly inspecting my brain and body for signs of decline, so I can remain as fit as a fiddle as those guys. I have noticed that I do make noise every time I get up out of a chair. I don’t know when that started, but I guess it must make the pain go away. I’m also starting to do it when I sit down too. I noticed a little falling apart in the face when I look in the mirror, but its no worse than when I was 25. The only really disturbing thing about this is, to detect my deterioration I need my reading glasses. I say goodbye and leave in the morning, and seconds later I return because I forgot my phone, then say goodbye again, only to return for my keys, to which I say “I’m really leaving now”, to which they say “Yeah Sure!” But I’ve always forgotten things. I remember when I was in the 6th grade I used to forget my sweaters and jackets until one day my Mom sent me back to school to get them, only the teacher caught me and said, “You mean you forgot all these!? You’d forget your head if it wasn’t connected to your shoulders!” I still leave my sweaters and coats in the office, but I pay my secretary not to make comments like that. I’ve often wondered if I was going to turn into one of those drivers who has to peek through the steering wheel to see the traffic light and then once the car 6 Cruisin’ Times ~ March 2020

gets going, only hit a max speed of 20 mph. I don’t want to turn into an old fogey. The other day I took a spin in the roadster. As I came to a stop light, there was a young lady in the left lane who had obviously just gotten her temps. It was obvious because you could see her mom teaching her driving habits and kept telling her to get a little closer to the white line. My buddy who was sitting next to me, who hadn’t seen the girl in training thought that each time she moved up, meant she wanted to race me because the road up ahead was going to squeeze from two lanes down into one and it looked like she wanted to get there first. And then he said, “Do you think you can beat her? Well, I thought, let’s give her a lesson she won’t find in any motor vehicle driving manual. So, I held the brake with my left foot, brought the revs up just a tad, felt the chassis load up and as soon as the light turned green I launched this god gearing tire spin that any old geezer would be proud of and was at the end of the next next block in no time. I looked in my mirror and saw our soon-to-be driver completely stopped and sitting in the middle of the intersection. Friends of mine who were behind us said the girl immediately hit the brakes and threw her hands up to her face, thinking an accident was about to happen. Perhaps this getting older thing isn’t going to effect my driving habits as bad as I thought. ...course that’s just me randomly speaking.

Located in Mercer County along the Shenango River only 80 miles from Cleveland and Pittsburgh and over the past years has become a sought after event. Bassically if it has wheels it’s welcome and FREE registration takes place between 2pm and 6pm, plus those who are registered are eligible for a drawing for one of the 200 bottles of Super Cruise Wine! There is also awards, as many as 5 DJ’s spread through the downtown area, 50/50 raffle and the town is capable of parking 700+ cars, in fact the first 200 get free tee-shirts. SHOWTIME ON THE SHORE Photos and story by Joe Secka

everal years ago, Frank and Suzi Latin wanted to show appreciation for their customers at Frank’s Auto Body. They decided to host a picnic and car show at their home. Space eventually became a problem and the show was moved to the shop in Madison, Ohio. The 2019 show moved to Lake Shore Park in Ashtabula where they joined forces with Art Mason and his regular Sunday cruise. This location addressed space constrictions and also provided the availability of public restrooms that has been a concern some prior events. It was an absolutely perfect day for the cruise. It was warm and sunny with a great mix of vehicles and the pleasant sound of the waves of Lake Erie hitting the shore. That was a pretty much perfect day for the gearheads in attendance. Music was in the background as the cars and spectators arrived. Helping rescue animals and the local cat and dog shelters has become a passion for both Frank and Suzi. Their show has evolved into a great fund raiser for many of these organizations. Money donations and shelter items were accepted and later combined with the results from the 50/50 raffle and the Chinese Auction. This year Frank & Suzi presented the Ashtabula APL with a check in the amount of $3,122.00 for use towards food and medical needs. Participants also brought pet food and supplies to add to the donations of this worthwhile cause. The Latins wanted to remind everyone who may an interest in assisting a particular shelter in their area, please reach out to them they are always seeking volunteers for various activities. THE DETROIT AUTORAMA - STILL GOING STRONG Photos and words by Joe Secka

or several decades now, the Detroit Autorama has been the Midwest location where “it’s happening” for indoor car shows. Two floors are filled with hot rods, customs, trucks, race cars, rat rods, classics and more. There is an area set off for pinstripe and graphic artists who work throughout the show and their creations are auctioned off for charity.

Each year, the Autorama presents the prestigious and highly sought-after Ridler Award. The award was named after Don Ridler who was a tireless promoter for the Michigan Hot Rod Association through the 50s and early 60s until he passed away in 1963 at the age of 54. Rule number one is the vehicle cannot have been shown anywhere else. Each car has to make its debut at the Autorama. Sometimes many car owners feel they have a car to qualify for the Great Eight, but that number gets cut down quickly by judges when the cars roll through Cobo Center’s doors.

By the time the show’s doors open on Friday afternoon, the Great 8 have been finalized and the owners told of their standing, but they must wait until Sunday evening to see whose name gets engraved on the perpetual trophy and take home both the honor and the winner’s check. Cobo Hall hugs the Detroit River and the winter winds and snow often greet attendees as they walk through the doors. This year’s show marked the 67th year for the annual event. But the weather does not keep away the thousands who travel there to see what some of the best builders in the country have been working on and keeping hidden for the past year. If you are a gearhead and haven’t been, then you need to add this to your list! That’s all I have - Joe

Ridler Award Winner

Steve Barton’s 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham, Las Vegas, NV. The long-awaited Cadmad has been a 16-year project that started with Steve’s low-production ‘59 Brougham and drove onto the floor of Cobo Hall as a one-of-a kind wagon. The transformation is the result of Super Rides by Jordan’s custom work, including the top transplanted from a 1955 Pontiac wagon.

Sonny Freeman’s 1965 Chevelle, Lafayette, LA. Sonny’s Chevelle is another collaboration with Mike Goldman Customs. The body sits on an Art Morrison Sport GT chassis. Mike Curtis designed the one-off billet wheels. The Chevelle is powered by a 900-horse LS7 backed by a Tremec T56 transmission. The seats were covered in charcoal and haze leather by Paul Atkins Interiors.

Danny & Sandy Sedresko’s 1964 Acadian, Victoria, BC. This GM Acadian has a long history under Danny’s ownership. He bought it 35 years ago, and he and Sandy rode in it on their honeymoon two years later. It was drag raced for many years. Three years ago, JF Kustoms got the car with instructions to redo it.

Quint Walberts’s 1941 Willys, Danville, IL. This owner-built Willys, created over the course of eight years on weekends, would be equally a home among street rods and street machines. The engine compartment packs a ZZ5 engine backed with a TH400 and Moser Wavetrac rear with 4:11 gears. The tube chassis is equipped with RideTech ShockWave suspension

Bob & Lorna Chapman’s 1935 Ford Slantback, Ontario, CA. Eleven years ago, Bob had an original frame and a $400 shell and desire to build a driver. The body got a 2-inch chop and is lowered slightly over the frame in front. Schott wheels are a perfect match for car. Exterior details include Harley headlights, a laid back grille, and that gorgeous paint.

Phil & Debbie Becker’s 1932 Ford Victoria, Dwight, IL. Phil and Debbie and Dave Lane have worked together in the past, but the “Legacy” ‘32 Vicky is a new height in the partnership. The redone Deuce still features the original Ford steel but with a new mild and tasteful style. The Moal coachbuilt chassis has a5-inch dropped and drilled front axle and Winters aluminum banjo rearend. Dayton 16and 17-inch wire wheels were chosen for a period look.

Pat & Debbie Moran’s 1969 Camaro, Harrison Twp, MI. Pat Moran is a dedicated Sixties musclecar fan and his particular passion is for Chevys. While the body honors the Sixties, a 2012 Camaro interior brings things into the 21st Century. Custom aluminum wheels with hand built caps featuring the ZL69 logo continue the modern flavor.

Mel Harbaugh’s 1947 Ford Sedan Delivery, Ottawa, MI. Mel took his sedan delivery to Wounded Knee Motors in 2017 to transform it into an extraordinary but practical driver. The result is this two-tone green Ford-powered rod riding on a Mustang II style front suspension and RideTech-suspended rear, carried by Colorado Custom wheels.

or the past nine years the Gasket Goons car club out of Pennsylvania have held their annual Hot Rod Bash. The 2019 edition of the event was a real record setter in so many ways. With a picture perfect fall Saturday folks that own the old vintage hot rods, rat rods, customs, muscle cars and race cars came out in force and filled every square inch of the Silver Creek Complex in Hellerstown, Pennsylvania in record numbers. In addition to all the great cars and their owners fans that love these cool cars came out in force as well. The Silver Creek Complex is the perfect place for the Gasket Goons and all their friends to come together and have a great day. There are swings and other play areas for the kids to have fun with. There is beer garden for the older folks to have their own fun in. Great food can be found on site as well to help with refueling oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s energy after checking out all the cars. On this day over a thousand cars came out to take part in the event. Gasket Goons Hot Rod Bash also features a great swap meet area with all sorts of great car parts and other cool vintage items. Folks can get some artwork of their own applied to their cars as their are many great pin strippers on hand to apply whatever one might want or desire. A cool bicycle show can be found with some really outstanding bicycles on display. For those that want to build a unique valve cover there is a great valve cover race that takes place. Folks keep racing until there is one racer left and they take home a very special trophy. In fact each

and every trophy is hand built and not one trophy is the same as any other. In fact each and every year a new batch of unique trophies are put together so folks really work hard to take home one of these special creations. Live music is always a big part of the Hot Rod Bash and this year featured two great bands that played throughout the event. Sean Preston and the Loaded Pistols got things going with several great sets of tunes. Following them was another great iconic band in the form of Dibbs Preston and the Detonators who keep everyone rocking and dancing as well. A giant pin up girl contest also took place with one lucky lady being selected as Miss Gasket Goons Hot Rod Bash for 2019. This contest is always one of the big highlights of the day. Along with the contests, live music fans are treated to various race cars firing up during the run of the event which also keeps everyone entertained as well. Gasket Goons work hard long hours getting the Hot Rod Bash together and this year all the hard work paid off with a record turnout. With the ten year anniversary of the Hot Rod Bash coming up in 2020 you can count on another record breaker for sure. As once again the Silver Creek Complex in Hellerstown, Pennsylvania will come alive with the sounds of cool vintage cars from the early days of hot rodding. So make plans now when the Gasket Goons Hot Rod Bash rolls around in the fall of 2020 a great time will be had by all. ~John

n 2011, the city of Willoughby Hills asked local residents, Frank and Julie Seme to help out with their Home Days celebration and make it something to remember! Not being people who back down from a monumental task, they said yes and the result was an outstanding success for the next three years! Parking for all show cars and related vehicles was in front of (and around) the city hall building. It spilled over across the street (Route 6, Chardon Road) where many more cars took up residence where they could!

We all know how unpredictable the weather can be during summers on the North Coast. These three years were no different. The first show (2011) was held on a magnificient, sunny day that followed a full week of rain! Nobody knew it at the time, but this was a sign of the relative good luck for years to come! Frank and Julie Seme have always done everything just right and these car shows were the same. The awards and prizes were not small tokens, these were excellent tokens of their appreciation for the folks that have been their customers over the past 53 years at the point of this writing. Russell’s 1940 Pontiac Concord, OH. I took this on a trip from Cleveland to California on rt. 66. Stopped at an old 66 station in Kansas for a pic. Powered by a 413 Pontiac V8. I met some great folks all the way and not one breakdown! It was a four year total resto. It was also in the power piston a couple years back. The 66 trip was in 2013 two months after completion. Still going strong with air and power steering. Runs a 461 Pontiac and th200r4. Nine inch rear/ 3:73 gears. The car runs 11:60 in the quarter. The 413 was replaced after the trip.

This is my 1931 “All Henry Steel” Ford Model A Victoria. It sports a decked out 1967 Corvette outlaw chassis with lots of chrome and stainless steel. The drive line is a ‘67 Corvette 327 that is very detailed with a 2 4 Edlebrock tunnel ram and a pair of 600 Edlebrock carbs. It also has an ATI TH350 transmission with a 3000 stall ATI converter. The rear end is a detailed chrome ‘67 Corvette indy suspension. Has 4 wheel Corvette disc brakes. Has a very detailed chrome drop front axle. The wheels are vintage Boyd Coddingtons. The interior is Gray leather and cloth. The gauges are Dakota Digital.

Cars â&#x20AC;&#x201C; United We Standâ&#x20AC;Śwell, sort of

e all proudly admit it, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re all car nuts!â&#x20AC;?. There that was easy. Oh, but wait. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s never that easy. In the movie, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Shrekâ&#x20AC;? (You may need to see your kids or grandkids on this) Shrek tells the Donkey that â&#x20AC;&#x153;Ogres are like onionsâ&#x20AC;ŚThey have layers. So, when we â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;claimâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; to be car nuts, it should mean that we are nuts about anything to do with cars, right? Well, if thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s true of all of us, then this piece is done. Buuuutâ&#x20AC;Śthat ainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t quite right, is it? There are so many different â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;layersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; to the world of Cars that it is really tough to find someone who digs everything or most everything to do with cars. Ever been at a gathering and guys hunker into the corner to b.s. and the conversation roles to cars? Guarantee that guys start in on what their main car interest is, and at least one, will tell you why everyone elseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s favorite interest is stupid. Then comes all the bashing of different parts of the hobby/sport. And weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve all heard them or said them.

NASCAR â&#x20AC;&#x201C; â&#x20AC;&#x153;I remember when they looked like REAL carsâ&#x20AC;?, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Floor it, now turn leftâ&#x20AC;Śrepeatâ&#x20AC;? Drag Racing â&#x20AC;&#x201C; â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sure, Just floor it and go straight. Whereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the skill in that?â&#x20AC;? Road Racing â&#x20AC;&#x201C; â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sure, fun for the driver, but I pay $100 to watch them go by in 2 secondsâ&#x20AC;Ścanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t see any more than thatâ&#x20AC;?. Now, just take these 3 examples and carve them up into all their own categories, classes, divisions and just these will have you dizzy. Then we can take a happy little trip to a cruise night and BAM!, we enter the Twilight Zone of things like Street Cars, Rods, Hot Rods, Customs, Show Cars, RestoMod, Vintage Stock, Old School, High-Tech, Ratrod, Late Model, Ricer (or to be P.C., late-model compact đ&#x;&#x2DC;&#x160;), and more. Plusâ&#x20AC;Ś brand loyalty (MoPar or NoCar, etc.). Oh, canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t leave out Land Speed Racing. Ouch! Okay, so take a trip to the top of this page and now, where do you fit?

Are you a car nut? My personal opinion is, as long as you have interest in cars, you my friend, are a car nut. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no different in any other peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s interests. People will say, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Oh, I just looove Artâ&#x20AC;Śbut not that modern stuff that looks like they flung a bucket of paint against the wallâ&#x20AC;?. See? Everyone has their favorites of anything. Food, desserts, clothes, music. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s okay to eat more than plain cheesecake and meatloaf, wear flannels, stare at landscapes and only care about Top Fuel drag racing. I like to think that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m fairly open to all car interests. Main reason: Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just so much cool stuff out there! And, the more weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re exposed to these when weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re young, the more we enjoy variety. My example: I was growing up in the 60â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and 70â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s watching ABCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Wide World of Sports. It was a show like â&#x20AC;&#x2122;60 Minutesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; but catered to sports. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d get a different sports event every few commercial breaks. And they liked motorsports! Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d see drag racing, the Baja 1000, stock car racing on road coursesâ&#x20AC;Śit was great. And it just carried over.
