Randomly Speaking Ice Cream Cones As the cruisin’ season is about to begin you will be faced with eating an ice cream cone. Please take the following steps to insure many hours of summertime ice cream eating fun. First of all, don’t get involved talking with anyone while eating an ice cream cone. You can’t talk and eat ice cream at the same time. If you trade bites, you should be related, or at the very least, good friends. Don’t try to buy a cone and bring it to anyone. Don’t try to handle two cones at the same time.
Walking and eating an ice cream cone at the same time is something you should not do unless you’re an experienced ice cream cone eater. Many people stumble or trip themselves because they’re too busy looking at the cone. Keep your eye on the sidewalk and your tongue on the cone. Recently its been trendy to use a flat style spoon to fold ice cream into a cone, instead of a scoop. Ice cream must always be scooped.If you don’t eat a cone, ice cream should be served in an official ice cream dish or tall ice cream soda glass. It makes the ice cream taste better.
If you have a beard, it is extremely hard to eat an ice cream cone. As you know, I have a beard and I have proven time and time again, that you will get ice cream all around your mustache, especially if you’re a gray beard and you eat chocolate… so grab plenty of napkins.
I don’t know who it was who decided to wrap cones with that sticky paper. It never comes off completely, then you’re stuck with making the decision to swallow the small bits of paper because if you spend anymore time trying to un-stick the paper, the ice cream will melt. It ruins the whole experience.
The most common mistake inept ice cream eaters make is to start licking at the top. It’s OK to take the first “bite” off the top just to get that initial taste. Anyone who knows anything at all about ice cream eating knows you start at the sides and work up. Too many people twist themselves out of shape eating ice cream cones, I’ve seen them. Make your wrists do the work by turning the ice cream cone itself.
There are great many people who make the mistake of getting a cone with rainbow sprinkles. No real ice cream cone eater gets rainbow sprinkles. Chocolate sprinkles are more acceptable.
Eating an ice cream cone is nothing you should dawdle over. The quicker the better. The perfect cone experience is to have eaten the entire cone without ever dripping more than an 1/8 of an inch. I’ve only had a few of those in my life.
There are two kinds of ice cream, hard ice cream and soft ice cream. Hard ice cream is best eaten at real ice cream parlors. I like to patronize the small Mom & Pop soft ice cream stands that have names like Dairy King or Tastee Cone. If their name includes “Custard” then it’s all the better. If there’s a long line, it must be good. ...course that’s just me randomly speaking.

T
he Gasser Reunion dates back to 2002 and vintage gassers have seen a rapid growth in popularity in recent years. Cruisin’ Times Magazine once again hosted the autograph session in the Drag Racing Legends tent. Dave and Susie Koffel, Nick and Joanne Iarussi, “Ohio George” Montgomery and numerous others were also on hand to meet and greet race fans. It is a pleasure to see the fans and racers alike lining up to get autographs.

The Gasser Reunion was one of the first events I covered for John Shapiro and Cruisin’ Times Magazine. Pulling into Thompson Raceway Park for “The Gassers” event is more than a little bit sentimental for yours truly! Seeing the fans lined up to see the racing legends in the CTM tent reminiscing and sharing stories or getting an autograph is special indeed. Beyond the smell of racing fuel, wheel stands and wheel hopping burnouts, this event has an atmosphere that is absolutely unique. Just walking through the pits almost makes the trip worthwhile. I can remember many visits to Thompson back in the ‘60s. Some of the race cars have an authentic history attached to them and others are a remake of one that once chased down the quarter mile. Superchargers bulging out of the hoods, straight axles, parallel leaf springs, wide drag slicks sticking out beyond the fenders along with that “attitude” only gassers have is just a part of the attraction of these vintage racing machines. And Thompson has that bridge over the starting line with pits on both side of the track that distinguish it as being just a bit different. Then you add in the BUGs (Back-Up Girls) backing up the drivers after their burnouts. At that point, everyone’s eyes are fixated on the timing tree! Anyway, another year of the Gasser Reunion is in the books and it was everything a drag race fan could expect. Thompson Raceway Park has been running since the early ‘50s and has certainly seen its share of gasser action throughout the years. The 2020 edition will be here sooner than you realize how fast time (and gassers) can fly! Gassers, front engine dragsters, altered, nostalgia super stocks and more will be entertaining the fans for sure. There will be plenty to see and plenty to do! Put this one on your list and be sure to say hello!

About Thompson Raceway Park Opened in 1958, Thompson Drag Raceway is one of the first dragstrips in the nation, and the first dragstrip in Ohio. TDR was there to help launch the careers of drivers such as Don Garlits and T.V. Tommy Ivo, both of whom would become drag racing legends. The track flourished throughout the muscle car era of the 60’s and early 70’s. The gas shortage of the 70’s and subsequent lack of performance cars was a trying time for the track. The track continued to operate through these tough times, and in doing so, became run down and neglected. In 1991, the dragstrip was purchased by drag racing enthusiasts Bill and Bonnie Clemson. Bill and Bonnie’s pride for the dragstrip was obvious, and over the next 14 years, $1.7 million dollars worth of improvements were made to the track and facilities. These improvements included: new restrooms, concession stands, a pedestrian bridge, timing tower, a paved access road and a paved pit parking area. By far the largest improvement undertaken was the leveling of the shut-down portion of the track. The project was started in October 2001 and was completed in the spring of 2002. Included was the complete repaving of the back quarter of the strip. In 2004 TDR became a fully sanctioned NHRA 1/4 mile dragstrip. In the spring of 2005 TDR was sold to new owners. Thompson Raceway Park, est. 2005 will continue the tradition of world class drag racing with a friendly, family atmosphere. Stay tuned!

S
alem, Ohio opened up their downtown area over a four day weekend to welcome the annual Super Cruise. Hot rods, customs, muscle cars, and vintage rides line the streets and fill up both public and business parking lots throughout the downtown area. Food vendors and carnival games lined Broadway Ave and attracted large crowds each day. DJs were set up in the larger parking lots while bands took the stage on Broadway! Dash plaques and “Show & Shine” trophies were presented. The Super Cruise is a free event and is open to the public with proceeds benefitting local food pantries through the Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley Car lovers, engine fanatics, and community members look forward to the revving up of engines during this popular automotive fueled event. A continuous “cruising loop” was set up using Sate and Pershing Streets! For those that preferred a more relaxed evening, many brought along their lawn chairs and simply pulled up a seat and watched the cruisers drive by. Roaring exhausts, music (both live and DJ), the aroma of open barbeque and food vendors filled the air while attendees walked around checking out a fantastic variety of custom and antique vehicles. Organizers commented that, “The whole downtown area is involved” for this ongoing celebration of horsepower, chrome and glittering paint jobs. The 2020 edition is scheduled for June 11th through 14th. Feature attractions already scheduled are the NASCAR Xfinity car driven by Jeb Burton, The Idaho Potato Truck, Dirk Stratton’s Formula Drifting car and more. Additional information including a list of events and a map detailing the parking and cruising procedures can be found at the event website, https:// salemsupercruise.com/ or on their Facebook page, “Salem Super Cruise”. T
he Rumblers Car Club is a world wide brotherhood that hold shows around the world. Each and every show is in a unique location with an interesting background. Rumblers NYC for the past few years have returned to the first home under the BQE. What is the BQE you might ask well let me fill you in with the details? The BQE stands for the Brooklyn Queens Expressway which is a major highway in one of the five boroughs of New York City. Well, under the BQE at most stops there sits a parking lots. So the Rumblers Car Club in New York City figured it would be a great place to hold a car show. No one is sure how they get the regular cars out of the lots to make way for all the classic cars that attend the show. But by some magic powers bright and early Saturday morning the lots are empty and in come all sorts of cool cars. Hot Rods, Rat Rods, Customs, Muscle Cars fill every spot in the lot. Rumblers from all over the world come out to support their New York City brothers in this once a year event. Pin up girls can be spotted walking around and taking photos even though there is no actually contest. These lovely ladies just seem to know this is the place to have their photos taken with all these cool cars and be seen at a real happening.

It is a true Rod and Kulture event as everyone comes out and enjoy themselves together as one big group. The interesting thing about the show there is no bands, no dj’s playing music, no contests just a fun time. There are a few trophies handed out at the end of the show and these trophies are special designed each and every year so folks work very hard each and every year to try to take home one of these creations. All the local car clubs come out and make it a point to come out and support the event from all around the Tristate area. Everyone sets up camp and brings food and beverages to keep all their members fueled up and having a good times. Before the show closes new members are brought into the clubs and veteran members are given special awards for those that have been with the club for a number years of membership. When the show comes to a close and after the trophies are handed out the event always ends the same way. That being with all the members of all the Rumblers Car Clubs coming together to take a giant group photo to celebrate another great year. So if you are in the area around the fall part of the year keep your eyes and ears open for the Rumblers NYC Back Under the BQE car show. Once you hear about it make sure you get yourself out and check out all the cool cars and folks that come out to take part in this once a year event. If you have a car bring it out and be part of the Rumblers world it is really a world wide happening for all those in the Hot Rod kulture. ~ John

Strange Brew

ike they say, ‘No matter where you go, here you are’. Strange days, indeed (what song was that from? dang!). Well, I’m writing this at the end of March and ‘here we are’, stuck in the middle with you and this whole Covid-19/Ma-ma-ma- My Corona crisis. In just a month we have seen it go from ‘Watch out, to small impact, to drastic effects on our daily lives. The toilet paper fiasco has been played to death, so I’m not going there.
word that auto manufacturers and steel industry were closing. Now, you have to be ‘essential’ to work (fortunately, ‘I are one’ ). So, we had no choice but to say ‘No Mas’ and cancel the show. We knew we couldn’t and shouldn’t.
But the news media, sorry, you’ve made yourselves an ‘Open Season’ target. If they could just give us good, verifiable news on the situation… and stop right there, life would be easier for all. But, like with other topics, it’s a game. Who can oversensationalize whom? Then, people grab a morsel of what was reported, add their own sprinkles on top and post it to social media. By the time millions of ‘couch experts’ post things, we have a smorgasbord of delights (untruths) which leaves the you and me’s of the world dazed and confused on what is real. “Yeesh!”
The ‘shouldn’t’? Because we feel that however long this takes to settle down, folks are going to need time to get comfortable again, With so many people out of work, our car show is not going to be one of the first things on their minds. Getting back to work, taking care of bills…just finding good old ‘normal’ again will take time. So the more we talked about these things, the decision to cancel was obvious.
Okay, I feel better, now. Time to dial back to the car world. Specifically, The Choppers Rod & Custom show, that should have been April 17-19th. I know there was no other answer, but it tore us up having to cancel. To us Choppers, our annual show is like another holiday. It comes every year and we mark off 4 days for ourselves to do nothing but the show, Funny, but going back to how fast this virus issue escalated, early March we saw bars and some restaurant’s close and said ”We better watch this”. The next week? Indoor venues like gyms, arenas, and…the Soccer Sportsplex close. Then came
The ’couldn’t? well, obviously we had nowhere to hold it, and, even if the Sportsplex opens we lost our leadtime to have shirts, programs, etc. made in time.
So, from me and all of the Choppers, we wish everyone the best and let’s hope we catch a break here, and by the start of June we can all meet at the Gasser Meet at Thompson…follow it up the next Sunday at our Test-nTune (also at Thompson), and ‘Whoop It Up’ with some drag racing! Now, back to the garage- cuz’ nobody can yell at me there about ‘Social Distancing’. Be Safe Y’all! ~ Mike

Walt’s ‘93 S-10 Super Pro Race Truck Lancaster, OH. The Truck is a standard cab short bed. Frame has been back hafted to run a narrowed 12 bolt rear end, 4.11 Richmond gears, 14x32x15 Phoenix racing slicks with coil overs and ladder bars. The transmission is a trick Power Glide. It has a T.C.I. torque convertor with a 5,400 rpm stall speed and a trans brake. The engine is a 355 Chevy SB. It is running TRW forged pop up pistons for 13.5 to 1 compression. The angle plug 23 degree cylinder heads are running 2.05 inch intake valves and 1.60 exhaust valves. The engine is equipped with a Crane solid roller camshaft. The balance of the valve train is also from Crane. We are using ARP 7/16 screw in rocker studs and ARP head bolts. The engine is equipped with a Quick Fuel 750 CFM double pumper carb on a Holley Strip Dominator intake manifold. The fuel system is setup to run either E-85 or alcohol, thus the name “Green Machine”, not to mention the Emerald Green custom paint. Wally’s nick name is “Gator” get the connection? Per Desk Top Dyno V the engine will make 536 horsepower. Using Desk Top Drags V we are looking for a 10.018 elapsed time in the quarter mile at 135.3 mph. We plan to do a few car shows and then hit the race track. Funny thing is the original idea was to go fast on a budget. Dig out a Jeg’s catalog and see how much of an investment this is. Oh, I did get a “free” Jeg’s hat and t-shirt.

o, I have to admit it. Sometimes I am a messy pig in my car. I’ll go on a road trip, pack up a bunch of samples, eat a bunch of fast food and after a few days, I’ve got a real problem on my hands. This poses one main problem for sure, which is, I don’t always know if I will be the one driving when I get to my destination, or the people I am meeting with will be, which means that no matter what kind of mess I have made, I need to be able to clean it up on a moments’ notice which bring me to this month’s article. How to be “date ready” in under 20 minutes. Here is the deal: • Collect any trash and throw it away. Make sure to look between the doors and the driver or passenger seats to see if there is any trash, and/or crumbs or dirt of any kind. Front and back. For this exercise you won’t have access to a vacuum, so you can take a cloth and run it back and forth in the in the area just after the door jamb inside the vehicle. If you use a microfiber cloth, a lot of this debris will stick to it. All other debris can be swept into a small pile and taken out with your fingers. • Wipe out the door jambs. At least the part you can see when the passenger doors are open. Always have a couple cloths with you and consider carrying a bottle of water or using a half drank one. You will need a little liquid for the door jambs.
• Take a damp cloth and wipe down the dashboard, radio and navigation area as well as any cup holder’s. Pouring a small amount of water into your cup holders and putting a microfiber cloth in it while making a turning motion with your first will make them look brand new! • Lift out any floor mats and at least dust them off. • Lastly, does your vehicle smell bad? This is something you may not even know, since your nose can go “nose blind”. Do not overdue it but simply spray a small amount of cologne, perfume or other fragrances into the air, let it sit for about 1 minute and then while driving, roll your windows down on both sides and let the air flush out your vehicle. Whether you’re going on an actual date or have a business meeting being able to do these bullet points on a moments’ notice can be the difference between looking like a messy person or someone who takes care of their stuff. Chrome Plating and Parts Restoration
1934 Ford Cabriolet - I have a 1934 Ford cabriolet that is all Henry Ford steel. The louvered hood is a steel aftermarket. The original body was taken off the frame and put on a Lincoln Mfg. frame with mustang 2 front end. Tubular upper A arms. The car has all original body parts but the hood. I have the original gas tank cover with bumper holes and spare tire holes in it. I also have the original re-chromed rear bumper and bracket. This car has a bored .30 over 350 chevy and a 350 transmission and an 8” ford rear end with leaf spring rear end. The car has power steering, power brakes with front disc, heat and air conditioning, tilt wheel, cruise control, power windows, digital dash, stereo and suicide doors with locking latches. The car has dual electric fans, 1 is thermostatically controlled the other is switch operated for use when using the a/c. Car does not run hot on the hottest days. Top and interior are very nice. Has parade boot, and rumble seat. I put the rubber on the running boards, brand new wheels, new 9” stainless head lights and put the original re-chromed front bumper back on it. This is a car that you can drive from coast to cast with no worries. It won a trophy at good guys in 2005. Titled as a 1934 Ford cabriolet. Call to discuss.
