CHICO’S 1971 NOVA SS Photos and story by Joe Secka
Mike “Chico” Caraballo already had a 1963 Nova he was racing in the big tire class when the opportunity arose to purchase this 1971. He had a ’71 when he was younger and always liked the style. Ownership of this car passed through a couple of Chico’s friends before it ended up in his garage. Geno Adkins owned the car about ten years ago and had done a paint job on it. He sold it to Keith Kelling who, basically, parked the car. 8 Cruisin’ Times ~ May 2021
The Nova was pretty much a roller when Chico brought it home about six years ago. He cleaned it up and gave it a thorough once over. John Tomsik assisted in adding more cage bars to meet 12 point specs along with additional safety items. They pulled the motor and trans out of the ’63 and added Autometer gauges, MSD ignition and Magna Fuel pump to the package. Then they went headed to the track for some racing with the Renegade Racing Association in their 8.90 class. The current motor was built by Mark Cook at Badman Racing Engines. It’s a Dart block with Brodix heads, Jesel rockers and Wiesco pistons. A Dale Cubic 1250 cfm carb sits Updated daily at www.cruisintimesmagazine.com
atop an Edelbrock Super Victor manifold with a Switzer Nitrous fogger being used as a power adder. Brian Tiffe built the Chevy Powerglide trans which is controlled with a B&M shifter. A Henderson driveshaft connects to a set of 4.30 gears sitting inside of the 9 inch rear end where ladder bars aid the traction effort. Lemon headers direct the exhaust through 4” Bullet mufflers. This combination produces 1100 horsepower. Without the nitrous, the Nova ran an impressive 8.60 at 160 MPH. All of the fun being at the track with friends made the effort worthwhile. Race Craft. Wilwood brakes are on all four corners with a parachute out back in case of an emergency. Afco shocks are in front with Menscer out back. Billet Specialties provided the wheels with 15x3.5 in front and 15x10 double beadlocks in the rear. Mickey Thompson rubber hits the road with 25x4 in front and 29.5x10.5 at the back end. The body is all steel with the exception of the deck lid and a Hardwood 6” cowl hood. The exterior was red when the Nova was purchased but it has been changed out to a sharp lime green finish. Kirkey seats, wrapped in black vinyl, and a K&R switch panel make the Nova a pleasure to drive.

Chico says his most memorable experience was the first pass with the Badman engine. He loves the way his Nova turned out and he wouldn’t change a single thing but admits he would like to visit victory lane a bit more frequently. Hanging out at the track with Ray and Laurie Tumbry, J. R. Phillips, Rob Larocco, Dennis Ashman and Eddie Corcino is unique in that they all have Novas. I guess they could be called the West Side Nova Gang! LOL! Mark Caraballo, Rick Sieg, Ken Meires, Jr. & Sr. and John Tomsik complete their racing family. Chico and his Nova picked up an award at the Choppers Car Show. Although this is primarily a race car, it has everything necessary to drive it on the street. Chico offered, “Maybe someday – a quarter mile at a time!” That’s all I’ve got - Joe

Warwick Drive-In Dead Mans Curve Cruise Photos and words by John McCartney
T
he 2020 car show scene was one for the record books with so many shows not taking place or being scaled down. Well, the Dead Man’s Car Club in New Jersey were determined to put on a show that does two things first adhere to all the Covid-19 guidelines and second still produce another kick ass Dead Man’s Curve Car Club style show. All of the members of the club looked to make a return to the Warwick Drive In located in Warwick, New York. In the past this historic drive in has played host to a number of Dead Man’s Curve events. So it only made sense to put on a show in 2020 at the giant Warwick Drive In. The place is a old time drive in which features three complete drive in theaters which allows for plenty of room for cars and car lovers to get together and work into the social guidelines which were put in place for the 2020 year of Covid-19. On a crisp warm day the gates of the drive in were opened up and what came in was all types of cool cars. Whether it was cool customs, classic muscle cars, wild rat rods, hot rods you name it you could find them filling the lots of the Warwick Drive In. Rows and rows of cars were on display much like back in the glory days of the when folks would bring out there rides to check out a movie and at the same time be treated to a great car show. Throughout the run of the show folks could stroll around the grounds and check out the old buildings and cars. Dead Mans Curve Car Club member Jim Fun-Zul kept everyone entertained spinning all sorts of great tunes from all over the decades which no doubt flashed folks back to times and places when things were much easier and lot more fun. In front of the big movie screens you could check out not a movie but vendors with all types of great items for sale and all sorts of cool stuff for starting, working or completing any type of project that any one might have going. For those were looking for some artwork done to their car or take home some great art for their walls you were covered with many talented artists on hand with all sorts of cool stuff. The General Lee straight from the Dukes of Hazzard tv show was on hand for fans to check out and allow them to take a trip back in time when this show ruled the tv airwaves. Richie Broughton brought his very cool period correct Comanche nitro powered top fueler which he fired up several times during the day filling the air with that sweet smell of nitro. For those who thought they could make as much noise as the top fuel car good luck but they could try their luck in the muffler wrapping contest. However for one lucky person did make enough noise to take home a one of kind special trophy. In addition to this special trophy several other cool trophies were given out in various classes each one unique and special in their own right. Al Liebmann was on hand and he handed out some cool products from POR-15 and Lucas Oil to various cool cars and their lucky owners. In this crazy year it was so much fun to see the Dead Mans Curve Car Club take the time and put on a great show in a classic setting. So many cool cars that came out to take part and fill up the lots that are in and around the Warwick Drive In. There are so many of these iconic drive in’s left around nowdays but what’s strange is many folks are putting on what are called drive in events in parking lots due to the fact that folks can come out and maintain social distance. Once again another cool event put on by the Dead Mans Curve Car Club to bring everyone together for a day of fun. ~ John

his is one of those cruises that brings plenty of folks from places all over the eastern, southern, and northern “non-burbs” and more! It’s been in existence for over 23 years under the watchful eye of Jerry Wayman (former owner of “Tom & Jerry’s Restaurant on the north end of downtown Burton). Jerry was the guy responsible for starting this cruise back in the late 1990s!!! The esteemed DJ for the past 18 years has always been “Crazy Dave”! He’s the one responsible for keeping the music action alive and moving! It’s a really nice 45 minute ride (for this guy from Eastlake) and on most evenings the weather makes the ride perfect! If you haven’t been out yet you should make sure you do it! Burton is located east out Rt. 87. When you go past Rt. 44 (about three or four miles), you’ll get into downtown Burton, Ohio! You can’t miss it! Cars are parked at the North end of the town circle in front of all the businesses along the street... both sides!!!

After a couple of seasons of diminishing attendance at the popular Wednesday Night Burton Cruise a few years ago, Jerry came back onto the scene with a vengance as the “Ring Master” of the show! Now, his Coffee Shop and Antique store have become the center of attention with Jerry outside personally directing cars to available spots on the street and generally making everyone welcomed! Like I said, the most recent “home base” is Jerry’s Coffee Corners Coffee and Antique Shop on the square. I’m ashamed to admit that I hadn’t been to Burton for the cruise in a while, but I could see on my last few visits that it’s definately a growing hot spot again with upwards of 150 to nearly 200 cars jamming into the parking lots and streets!!! Great folks are there from all around! This is always a good cruise if you want to get out into the country! The old Tom and Jerry’s Diner is done up in retro rock style, so you’ll feel right at home with good food and ice cream (if you get there early enough). Take a drive out any Wednesday evening and see Burton come alive with hot rods, classics cars and classic folks beginning this year on Wednesday, June 2nd 2021!!! (P.S. Don’t be ‘That Guy’, Just go for it. We’ve all met folks like this. They’ll say, ‘Gee, I sure wish I could find (insert whatever, here)’. Could be a certain part, whatever. And then, when you give them great information on how they can solve their predicament, heh-heh, they always seem to have a reason/ excuse not to follow up on it. Which leaves you wondering (after you slap your forehead) why they even mentioned it. Now, I understand if the suggestion just doesn’t work for them. If you tell me I can find that $50.00 part at some guys place 400 miles away, well, that might not be the best answer out there and I’ll keep looking. But I want focus on one particular ‘question’ that I’ll send the answer to you (free of charge) and I really encourage you to take me up on this. More than once, a person I’m B.S.’ing with has said, you know, I’d like to go to a car show that focuses on the Old School/ Traditional Rods and Customs. I always, always give the same answer: ‘Spinout!’ Put on by The Spinners Car Club, this is an outdoor show that’s held at Gougler Park in Brimfield, Ohio every August. This group of guys and their families put on a great show every year and it’s on my ‘must go’ list. I met these guys at our Choppers Show years ago and they told me of their show and I have been a huge fan ever since. Wanna’ see hopped up Model A’s?
Gassers? An early 60’s land yacht custom ‘in the weeds’? You’ll see all varieties at this show. They park all thru the landscape of the park and it’s a cool setting. Just writing about it makes me wish it were happening next weekend. And that’s the sign of a cool show. When you have it marked on your calendar as soon as you see the first flier for it come out. And for the locals (Cleveland area) that automatically say, “Brimfield!?” like I’d said New Mexico…let’s put Brimfield in perspective. We have no problem going to Summit, in Tallmadge, to go through the scratch n dent area. Well, take that same trip on I-76E but go past the Summit exit and get off on Route 43. BAM!, once across the freeway bridge just follow the signs that the club has all along the route and you are there in 5 minutes from the exit. So, when you ask the question and someone gives you an answer…once in awhile, don’t find ways to talk yourself out of acting on it, whatever it is…you may really be cheating yourself from something good.
