Randomly Speaking The Important of History..

always had trouble with history in school. I just couldn’t understand the importance of it. It’s nice to know that Henry Ford held off putting the first ever V8 (flathead) motor in a car, until the deuce came out, otherwise The Beach Boys wouldn’t have had a hit record with just “Little Coupe”. I applaud Christopher Columbus for having the farsightedness to come up with the easily remembered phrase - “Columbus sailed the Ocean Blue in 1492”. Other than that, as a High School senior, I could never figure out why we needed to know all those names and dates. Needless to say, I was a straight “D” student through out my entire “history” of schooling and finished at the bottom 10% of my high school class. The only reason I didn’t fail my history exam was because the night before the test on “American Industry: Farmlands to the Heartland’s”, instead of studying, I stayed up all night helping my buddy modify his dad’s McCormick corn picker, so it would beat his neighbors John Deere at the county fair. As luck would have it, my senior class history teacher, Mr. Walker, had made the test into one of his famous “one question” wammo’s. Ya know the ‘ol “sink or swim” routine, designed to separate the real students from the numb nuts (like me!). The question was, “Who was instrumental in developing the “Reaper” and explain?” Daahhh! Bagged an A+ on that one. First of all, my mother had a complete set of McCormick spices. Spices come from fields. Wheat, barley, oats and rye come from fields. The label on her spice rack was Red. All McCormick farm equipment was Red. Coincidence? I don’t think so. Have you ever seen John Deer brand spices? No. Now that I’ve closed in on becoming another type of senior, I’ve figured out why all that History stuff is important. A friend of mine emailed me some startling information about kids who are starting college this fall. It’s really opened my eyes to the importance of history and I think it will for you too. First of all, a lot of these kids were born in the 1990s. Nothing historical about that, other than it makes you and I, feel like we should all be wearing “historical plates” on our backs. But here’s the bad news. They have no meaningful recollection of the Reagan era and do not know he had ever been shot or that he was a mega movie star. Black Monday (1987) is as significant to them as the Great Depression is to us. They don’t remember the Cold War. They have never feared a nuclear war. “The Day After” is a pill to them not a movie.

They are too young to remember the space shuttle blowing up. Tiana Square means nothing to them. Their lifetime has always included AIDS. Bottle caps have always been screw-off and plastic. Atari pre-dates them, as do vinyl albums - hence the expression “you sound like a broken record” - has absolutely no meaning to them. As far as they know, stamps have always cost around 40 cents and a gallon of gas has always been over $2. They have always had an answering machine. Most have never seen a old Radio or TV set with only 3 channels. They have always had cable. They cannot fathom not having a remote control. Come think of it neither can I. Popcorn has always been cooked in the microwave. The Vietnam War is as ancient history to them as are WW1, WW2 and Korea. They can’t imagine what hard contact lenses are. They never heard: “Where’s the beef?”, “I’d walk a mile for a Camel”, “De plane, de plane!” They don’t know who shot JR and could care less who JR is or who played him. The Titanic was found? I thought they always knew where it was! Kansas, Chicago, Boston, Alabama and America are places, not groups. Cars have always had front wheel drive, plastic bumpers and air conditioning. A rust bucket is something you carry rust in and have no idea what Nylon ply tires, 3 deuces, drum brakes, strombergs and cruisin’ the avenue is. Well, I think you’re beginning to understand the importance of history. I know I am. I’m thinking - we’re gonna be ‘forgotten real quick unless we start spreading the word. Guess who’s now become the “A” student and teacher? You and me. Yes, Mr. Walker, I now understand the importance of history. So this Thanksgiving, give thanks for our history. If you see someone younger checkin’ out your car, give ‘em a couple of tidbits about the history of it. When you fill out your car show sticker next year, give lots of information about your car then ask your cable operator to install the History Channel. I think you’ll find out that Cyrus McCormick not only invented the “reaper”, but expanded his idea by combining the “thrasher”, the “cutter” and the “reaper” into what is now known as the “Combine”. He eventually parlayed that into a small business known today as “International Harvester”. The McCormick spice company was owned by his nephew, who while visiting Europe noticed that the French used spices in all their foods. He brought back 50 tons of the stuff, packaged it in nice little “Red” bottles and gave it away as an incentive to every farmer who bought a McCormick brand farm implement! Give thanks for our history, it’s the only one we’ve got! ...course that’s just me randomly speaking.

During the spring and early summer months, Mother Nature played havoc with outdoor events causing both cancellations and postponements. The Cruise-A-Palooza in Butler, PA was one of the victims. But, due to the heavy rains, the show was only delayed from Saturday to Sunday. Fortunately, on show day, light showers did not stop any of the activities! The Rodfathers Car Club was formed in 1991 and they have hosted numerous cruises, shows and other events while supporting area charities with their efforts. The 24th edition of this show was held at the spacious Butler Farm Show Grounds outside of town. With over 300 acres of space, there was plenty of parking for both cruisers and spectators. The gentle hills and paved roads made this a great event setting for showing off vehicles of all types. This event regularly attracts cars from several states and Canada. Multiple DJs filled the air with music from an earlier era, helicopter rides were available, local fire departments added to the displays, a pancake breakfast, food and craft vendors, and just about anything you might need or want at a car cruise were quite handy.

All in all, it turned out to be a great day with young and old gearheads pulling in with their rides and sharing time and stories with the others in attendance. The location is excellent and this is a cruise to keep in mind for next year!

Maple Grove Raceway is located just outside of Reading, Pa and has a long rich history in the sport of drag racing. Whether it was the early days of hot rodding to the great funny car match races of the 70â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s or up to the present day NHRA events they have seen it all over there long storied history. One event that has become a staple at Maple Grove over the past years has been the Classic Auto Mall Glory Days. This event allows everyone a chance to take a step back in time to a place where everyone came out to the local drag strip to check out what everyone is running and show off their new cars. The Classic Auto Mall Glory Days is a giant car show and vendor midway but it is so much more than that. During this one-day event there are bands playing, pinup girl contest and off course drag racing on the famous Maple Grove quarter mile drag strip. Steve Musser and his group brought together a large turnout of funny cars from across the east coast to do battle. From injected alcohol, blown alcohol, and even nitro funny cars all came together to see who was the baddest of the bad. With a cool thousand dollars up for grabs in each round for the best burnout everyone came to heat and smoke up the tires to take home the cash. Robin Stambaugh driving her Corvette funny car got the thousand-dollar burnout money in round one with a long Smokey burnout. in his Quarter Pounder funny car was able to smoke his way to the burnout money. Brian Gawlik took home the title in the Blown Alcohol funny car class, while Robert Daly in his Warhorse Mustang was the winner of Injected Alcohol funny car class. A pair of nitro funny cars driven by Keith Davidson and Bruce Larson did battle as well. Both of these racers have a long history at Maple Grove but perhaps none longer than that of Bruce Larson. Larson driving his USA-1 Camaro has raced at Maple Grove

Raceway almost since the first day they opened in all sorts of cars it is really great seeing him still out and driving and having fun with his cars. In addition to the funny cars there were many other classes for folks to take part in and look to take the win home in. Scott Hasko in his Relic Gasser was the winner in the East Coast Gassers class. Backseat drivers brought a fine collection of vintage dragster to do war and when the dust settled it was Tom Hand coming home the winner.

Over in the Mandra class Tim Hansberry in his very one of a kind funny car was the big winner of a stellar field of all sorts of vintage classic drag racing machines. There was a fun run class, which allowed you to come out and just have that fun running your car just like back in the day. Out of the giant car show the top 25 were picked out and were allowed to drive down the track as well as come back later this year for the NHRA Dodge Nationals. The Classic Auto Mall Glory Days is a great way to look back and enjoy what many feel where the glory days of drag racing, plans are already to make this event bigger better so stay tuned! ~ John McCartney

nother one of those long-time cruises on the East side, Mr. Chicken, Willoughby, always had a close, tight-knit following in spite of (relatively) few parking spaces available. They routinely drew 50 to 60 cars (the maximum) on any given Monday Night! Sue Bobnar and Chris McManus (of Mr. Chicken) were the hosts with The Wolfman (Clarence Kilton) and Al Piniecki spinning the tunes (at different times). It was always a great time on a hot summer night!!! The Monday night cruises at Mr. Chicken in Willoughby were always there with new promotions from week to week. Sue and Chris would hand out complimentary (delicious!) chocolate chip cookies sometimes along with other surprises. Through the years they offered the cruising night, with just a few changes making things more interesting every week. It was always good to see everyone in their proper Monday night spots spilling their good old Monday night car-talk! In the beginning, it took the regular crowd a few weeks to form as a neucleus. That crew was as active on the last day as they were in the beginning, years earlier. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s always sad to lose a cruise that is as successful as this one was!!! We have to work hard to keep the good ones alive and not let them fall into the abyss! Everyone that attended the Willoughby Mr. Chicken always remembers their Monday nights well! The body was in excellent condition. The car has 38,000 original miles and the original 6 cylinder engine and auto transmission. I enjoy taking it to local car shows and cruises. My 5 year old grandson, Nicholas, loves watching Papa drive the car. This is a good thing, since Nicholas will eventually inherit the car when he is old enough to drive. It started out with 260 rear wheel HP stock, but now it’s 415 rear wheel HP, dyno-proven, thanks primarily to a Procharger pushing 7 psi peak boost. Detailing

(Sticky) Business Removing Vinyl Letters/Decals: In order to effectively remove vinyl from a vehicles surface, a heat gun is a great tool to have because it makes the vinyl soft and easy to peel away from the paint. If you do not have a heat gun, very hot water works too but just takes more time! The first step is to remove the letters/ logos and then the next step is the removal of any adhesive that is stuck on the surface underneath. The adhesive is what is left after you peel off the vinyl and depending on how long the letters / stickers have been there, may dictate the effort that you will have to put into removing this last layer. There are solvents made especially for this but rather than spending in upwards of $35 for a gallon of something called “adhesive remover”, you can buy isopropyl alcohol (Rubbing alcohol) from any store for about $0.99 per quart. You want to be very careful when using this on your paint or any solvent for that matter but this is how it is done. Working one section at a time, you’ll want to spray the alcohol on the adhesive and using a wet towel, rub that area back and forth. You may need to increase the pressure as you are rubbing depending on how the job is going. Rubbing alcohol evaporates very quickly so make sure to just work one area at a time. Rotating your towel is also important because as the adhesive transfers on the towel, you’ll continually need a fresh area to work with. Microfiber is not the best to use in this situation. Try using a cotton towel instead, as microfiber is not meant for the abuse caused by solvents and adhesive residue.

Step 2: After the adhesive is removed you will have to assess the area to see if it is necessary to compound first and then wax or to just go right to the wax as the paint will have most likely oxidized everywhere else except where the stickers were. This is good information to know especially if you have been looking to replace logos on your race car or your work truck. Additionally, the adhesive remover will for surely have stripped off any protective coating. Gum and Candy Removal: Gum and / or candy is often times one thing people do not understand how to remove and if you are selling your vehicle, it definitely takes away from the resale value, even if it’s just a couple hundred dollars, it’s still a couple hundred dollars!! In essence gum / candy is like an adhesive and can be removed with the same technique as the stickers. A solvent and hot water will do the trick but great caution and patience is necessary. The solvent and hot water will loosen the sticky properties as well as help to dissolve them. Once it is loose enough, you will literally be able to pull it right out, then follow up with an all purpose cleaner and water as if you were shampooing that area. Doing this will remove the rest of the stickiness as well as bring the carpeting back to life. For cup holders and other areas, be very careful with the solvent, so it does not discolor.
