Randomly Speaking Words We Once Used While heading out to a cruise this teenager who was pumping gas took a long look at my car and said, “Sweet!”. When did that word enter the automotive vernacular? I’ve been wondering about all those old words we once used. Ya know, those hip sounding slang words we all used to “Dig” and that now since gone by the way side. One of the most popular words that we used to use was “Neat”. Along with the word “Man”. As in, “Man, that’s a neat hood scoop!”. Those two words are a direct result of the Maynard G. Grebs from the Dobie Grillis Show and the “beatnik” era. So was “Far out”, “Can ya dig it” and “Like”. Later, Tommy Chong of Cheech and Chong would use “Man” and “Like” in every sentence. “Wow, man, like, that’s far out, man.” In fact, if they substitute the current slang word, “Dude” for “Man” they could do all their old movies over again and they’d have a completely new audience that never heard of Cheech & Chong. Another word that people use in place of “Sweet” is “Sick”. It’s actually considered a ‘good thing’. So is “The Bomb”. Back when we were kids, “The Bomb” meant it had a sick motor and probably was ready to blow up! Remember when you used the word “Really” in every sentence? If you answered, “Really!” Then stop it, get a life. The late 80’s ushered the California term, “Bitchin” as in, “That’s really a bitchin set of headers!”. Nowadays you really need to be careful saying the word “bitch”, unless you’re referring to a female dog. One of the most over-used slang words is “Awesome”. The next time someone says “Awesome” to you, say, “Yeah...like...I think it’s really kinda groovy too... and see what happens. 6 Cruisin’ Times ~ November 2019

Remember “Leave it to Beaver’? That show was directly responsible for “Gosh” and “Crud”. As when the Beav was asked by his mom how his day went, he’d say, “Gosh Mom, Lumpy threw up at lunch and got the cafeteria all cruddy!” “Crimini” and “Cripes” were one of those interchangeable words so you could almost say “Christ” and not get in deep doo-do. As in... “For Crimini sakes”, or “Cripes that hurt!”. I remember my mother never said either one because they both started with a “C” and that was just tooo close to saying the Lord’s name in vane. Instead, she’d say, “What in the Blue Blazes did you say?” “Well sonny boy, if I hear you say that “C” word, I’ll smack the Bejeesus right out of you. Which, I think actually means Jesus, but just for the record, I’m not sure. Mel Blank, the voice of Yosemite Sam and others is credited with making “Tarnation” hugely popular. Sam, in his gravely voice would say, “What in the Tarnation is that Rabbit up to?” Again, I’m just guessing, but I think it meant Hell. Today, the word “nation” is an attachment word to make something really big, as in “Gearhead Nation”. Still, the all time, heavy hitter of slang words, has got to be... “Cool”. It transcends all cultures. I just wish that teenager would have said, “Cool Car, Mister!” Cause I’m still havin’ a “Tarnation” of a time saying “Sweet!”. ...course that’s just me randomly speaking.

10 Cruisin’ Times ~ November 2019

This cruise was actually a part of the 26th Annual Rogues Hollow Festival which happens in early August of each year. Doylestown is about 13 miles southwest of Akron sitting on the highest point of Wayne County. I’ll have more on the local trivia associated with the festival later. This is an old fashioned Street Fair with the town’s square and downtown-streets being closed to traffic making a pedestrian mall for family activity. There is a Grand Parade on Friday which includes floats, antique cars, fire engines, marching units and sometimes tractors and cows!! Then Saturday morning starts with a pancake breakfast followed by children’s games, corn-hole tournaments, pony rides, family bingo, a 5K run & walk, crafters, artists and even a farmer’s market. The evening begins to wind down with music at the bandstand followed by “Family Movie Night Under the Stars” and finally fireworks. I have to say this sounds like two months of entertainment crammed into two days! Just WOW! Updated daily at www.cruisintimesmagazine.com

The best part, for us gearheads, is the car cruise being held from the square downtown and heading out on N Portage Street. The downtown street is very wide allowing angled parking on both sides and the buildings are vintage style creating a great photo background. Heading north the residential area allows parking on the tree lawns where huge trees provide some welcome shade on a hot day like this one was. There was a live band playing and food vendors as though you needed something else to make you feel even more relaxed. I don’t know how many classes there were for the show participants but you can guess from the number of trophies that were on display. And that Best of Show trophy must have been six feet tall! I could go on describing the cars and trucks but you can see the images and judge for yourself. The count must have been 200-300 or possibly more. OK, back to some interesting trivia. Like many rural areas and small towns in Ohio, Rogues Hollow was once a thriving coal mining village near the modern day town of Doylestown, Ohio.

It’s no secret that Ohio is full of sinister stories involving ghosts of tragedies past. But what might be a secret to some are the little-known hauntings that get forgotten over the years by those who don’t live in the area. Rogues Hollow is one such place. It’s Ohio’s very own version of Sleepy Hollow and most Ohioans don’t even know it exists. From tales of a haunted mill and a crybaby bridge to a shaking graveyard and a headless horseman, Rogues Hollow is one of Ohio’s most haunted areas. You can explore Rogues Hollow and Chidester’s Mill. Just be sure to stay away after dark, as that’s when the ghosts come out to play! Ohio just might be one of the scariest states in the country. I’m aware that I frequently tell you to keep an event in mind for the following year and I shall again with this one. The “Rogues to Riches” theme fits the already eerie history. Keep Doylestown in mind for your cruising schedule next year. That’s all I have - Joe

26th ANNUAL NEOCC

CAMARO CRUISE Photos and Story by Joe Secka Summit Racing Equipment in Tallmadge, Ohio was the host site for the NEOCC 26th Annual Camaro Fall Classic on September 6-8. NEOCC (NorthEastern Ohio Camaro Club) is a very active group of Camaro owners and fans. They have several events throughout the year with the highlight being this “Fall Classic” show. The turntables inside of the Summit sales space were loaded with a pair of Camaros including a 2015 Indy 500 Pace Car version.

2015 INDY 500 Pace Car Camaro

Perfect weather brought out every generation of Camaro onto the grounds generating a total car count of 253, one of the event’s best participations ever. They were able to raise a grand total of $15K for charity. Both Sarchione and Tom Henry Chevrolet dealers brought several cars for display and Lingenfelter Performance Engineering had their “Continental 1000 HP Camaro ZL1 to show off. A Chinese Auction and 50/50 raffle created a lot of interest. Saturday evening many of the attendees “cruised” to the MAPS Air Museum in North Canton where they also enjoyed dinner. Several more Indy 500 pace cars and Bill Jenkins “Grumpy’s Toy” Camaro joined a variety of original, restored, custom and modified Camaros to check out. Awards were presented across twenty different classes plus an additional thirteen special awards. This show is always well organized and worth the trip to look things over. Maybe next year? Detailing ™

Miss-understandings Usually Cause Problems A spot is usually the result of a fresh accident that will come out with relative ease if removed right away. It has only discolored the outside of the carpet fibers. A stain is more permanent, having embedded itself into the carpet fibers, and changing the color forever. What is written above is one of the truest statements in carpet and fabric cleaning. Most often people confuse a “spot” from a “stain” and because of that, something super simple to clean, becomes a more permanent problem. For example, let’s say you spill coffee on the carpeting of your vehicle. How would you clean it? A lot of people would use a carpet cleaner or a spot and stain remover and start scrubbing it in with a brush. This is the absolute worst thing you can do when the spot is fresh and / or has never been attempted to be cleaned. Imagine this…the fibers of the carpeting no matter if they are in your car or house have a coating on them that is literally sitting on the edges of the fiber in most cases. And if the fiber is drenched with the liquid, and it still hasn’t been “ground in”, your best course of action is using a microfiber cloth with just hot water squeezed onto the spot while using it like a wash mitt rubbing the fibers back and forth. Microfiber is best because of its ability to gently scrub surfaces. They usually hold 6 - 8 times their weight in water and they are great for holding and releasing water. Whatever water you put down, you will need to pick back up and microfiber cloths are like chamois, only better. It doesn’t matter if its spilled coffee, or an excess amount of mud, using water and a microfiber cloth with or without cleaner will

always be a great option. Using cleaner will help with certain kinds of spots but your real friend here is both the microfiber cloth and the hot water. Steam and / or hot water is an incredible tool when it comes to removing spots off of surfaces. One more “trick of the trade” is cleaning clothing before ruining them trying to scrub off some grease splatter or that random ketchup squirt. If whatever you get on your clothes is raised above the cloth, take a butter knife and scrape off whatever isn’t soaked into the fabric. Then you can either leave it for when you get home or you can start the process which would be to take an ice cube and rub it back and forth on the spot. You may get wetter than you would like, however, getting it while it’s fresh could be the difference between saving it and ruining it forever. The melting water will help diffuse the coloring of the ketchup or grease from food issues. For grease, the ice cube trick works well, however, there is nothing more effective than putting a dab of dish-washing liquid on it, then putting it under cold water or in the wash. All in all, no matter what you get on your carpeting, cloth or clothing, removing as much of the problem is key. Using hot water and a microfiber cloth is a great way to solve a potentially bad problem.

2011 PENN-OHIO EVENT HELD

ANNUAL MODE

D IN EASTLAKE, OHIO

EL A BANQUET Words and Photos Ron Dustman/DustmanArt

O

ne of the hardiest groups of cruisers I’ve ever met, got together on an extremely rainy day on October 17th, 2011 at the Dobrovnik Garden Center of the Croation Home in Eastlake! These people didn’t let a little rain keep them from coming from all over Ohio and Pennsylvainia to enjoy each others dedication and undaunted interest in the automobile that defines the beginning of our love for all cars that could ever be made into what we now think of as hot rods! The Penn-Ohio Model A Ford group held their annual event at Dobrovnik’s Hall in Eastlake. There was no rain date or any other “sissy-like” option that so many of us these days rely on if, (God forbid) there should be a cloud in the sky that might spew forth some rain! These folks drove their pristine antique Model As over great distances in many cases and didn’t even bat an eye... well, maybe not... I was (personally) quite impressed with the absolute dedication these individuals showed for the machines they cared for and the common bond they all had to each other regarding the preservation of these fine older machines! For more info on the Penn-Ohio Model A Ford Club, go to: www.modelaclub.com.

Jim’s 1936 Ford Port Orange, FL. I was searching the internet for a older convertible and found this 1936 Ford Cabriolet. It was in Vancouver Washington and was in mostly stock condition. It has a 1948 Flathead motor, 12 Voltsystem, and dual exhaust. 1948 Hydraulic Brakes, and is a solid car. The paint color is Bambalino Blue, 1 of 4 colors offered during easter 1936. I bought it sight unseen except web pictures and that was in April of 2004 and it is a very reliable car.

Kathy’s 1968 Camaro SS Convertible New Castle, PA In the year 1968 only 20,400 SS Convertibles were made. I consider myself fortunate to own one of them. I got my car in 1970 and have greatly enjoyed modifying it through the years. The car has a Power Glide Transmission, chrome transmission cover, chrome oil pan, oil filter cover and all stainless steel and/or braided lines. The engine is a 350 with 295 HP. It has a four barrel Holley carburetor and a stainless steel Edelbrock Manifold. I added a four core radiator to make the car run cooler. The exhaust system is all stainless steel. The interior is Factory Deluxe all in black. The outside of the car has a unique hood featuring two thin ribbed decorative inserts only offered on Camaro SS models. I installed chrome wheel well molding and chrome traction bars. Both bumpers are chrome. My convertible top has a power button to operate it. I enjoy driving my car and participating in various shows and cruises.

George’s Shelby Mustang Super Snake Copley, OH. In 1973 I graduated from high school went into the Navy and purchased a new 1973 Mustang Mach 1. I really liked the car a lot, the looks, the ride, and mostly the color. It was gold with a black painted hood. After my discharge I sold the car and started school. I thought to myself one day I would own another Mustang. Forty one years later I purchased another. This one is unique, rare, and really fun Shelby Mustang Super Snake.
