Randomly Speaking Getting your car in the magazine
Y
ou’ve probably noticed our progression over the years from things like black and white newsprint to color “shiny” paper and adding in more articles about vehicles from our neck of the woods. It’s a double edged swor, as with it comes inquiries about how someone might get their car into the mag. As Editor Kevin Lee once addressed situation quite nicely, and I’d like to offer up our ‘take’ on how you can get your your pride and joy published. As Kevin points out. “The people I like dealing with the most are the ones I run across at an event who are surprised I’m interested in their car. The ones I hate dealing with are the ones who can’t believe I’m not interested!”. First of all, you must understand that this entire car show hobby is built enterely on the three letter word. Ego. Don’t get offended, having Ego is a good thing, but for some, it can and does get out of hand. We all want someone to see our car, appreciate it for what it stands for hence why no matter how many deuce coupes you see, believe it or not, they’re all different! As human beings we also need to have recognition, which, in turn, fuels our egos. The more we get, the more we like… unfortunately, the more we get, the more we want. We, of course are in an enviable position to satisfy egos and give lots of recognition, but from a pure numbers stand point, there’s only 12 monthly issues, which means there’s only certain number of features out of thousands of collector cars in the surrounding area. We increase those odds by publishing our readers rides which give us an extra 48 chances to publish more vehicle features a year. It’s a task that wears heavily on our shoulders every month. We see so many cool cars every month and it’s hard to include each and every make and model, color, and build. What to do. It’s very difficult to approach a photographer or editor. What do you say? It’s like back in high school when you’re asking someone out on a date. You don’t want to hear “In your dreams fella!” Or “Are you kidding?”. Being obnoxious doesn’t work, and hasn’t worked in either case very well. Thinking before you speak can save you from getting slapped by a woman and not making it into a magazine. Do it in a subtle way as not to embarrass either side. Barking it out in front of your friends. “Hey! Whens my car going to be in your mag?” Might get an answer “in your dreams fella” or something similar. Sending a picture of your car and a short description/story and when you’ll be at a show will probably work 6 Cruisin’ Times ~ November 2020
better. Please don’t get mad while we’re photographing a car next to yours and wonder (out loud) how come we don’t shoot yours? It could be that we already shot your car or it won’t be coming out for another couple months. Which is why you never see photographers wearing shirts that say they’re from a particular magazine, they don’t need the aggravation. What we look for. That, of course is a loaded question. We have to keep a close balance between Ford, GM, AMC, Mopar, and the unusual. We also have to consider color, have we done a Rat Rod in a while? What about race cars? Trucks? Projects? Then, there’s the geographic side of the coin, the high collar, low dollar, pro-built, garage built, daily driver, all the way to trailered vehicles. We’re satisfying the whole automotive universe from stock antiques to even now the euro and late model muscle car crowd. Busy. When someone from a magazine is roaming a show, we’ve only got a few minutes to shoot and get to another show, sometimes 3 or 4 shows in one day. That way we have enough coverage for the winter months or slow season. There’s also what I call “Time Robbers” who have nothing to do and want to do it with you. Don’t say, “You did coverage of a show and my car wasn’t in it.” We shot 100 photos and only had room for 10, I guess we didn’t have room! One last thing. Don’t offer money to get your car on the cover. The cover is not for sale, we don’t take money to run a feature story either. In a nut shell, I guess the best way to getting your car in the magazine is to email/ mail in story/pictures, kinda like when you wrote Santa a letter for things you wanted for Christmas. Remember when you sat on his lap in the department store and tried ‘conning’ him into another model car kit? You didn’t always get what you wanted, but when you did, you were surprised because you had to wait so long. If you got everything you wanted or Christmas, your ego would be out of control and you should write Santa and thank him for making you that way. Actually, think of me as the “Car Show Santa”, write me all you want, but you don’t get to sit on my lap! ...course that’s just me randomly speaking. ~ John Shapiro

Octane Nights Cruise 2019

ust to prevent any confusion, this coverage is from the 2019 Octane Nights as the 2020 event was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. We sometimes publish the coverage of a prior year’s event just before the following year’s show to help promote the cruising hobby and also as a reminder of the bigger events. So, here you go with photos and a story about like-minded folks having a great time! The residents of Ravenna, Ohio enjoy having a block party. This one is centered on gearheads and their cars, trucks and hot rods! The Celebrate Portage Cruise In, better known as Octane Nights, attracted close to 2000 vehicles to East Main Street on this Wednesday evening. I’d have to estimate the spectator count to be “full” since an accurate number was far beyond my capability. I have heard numbers ranging between 1500 and 8000 in previous years. So, your guess would be, at least, as good as mine. The road is blocked off from Mongoose Motorsports and Portage Trim at the top of the hill down to the A&W Restaurant at the bottom. Many businesses open their parking lots for the cruise night and both sides of the street are filled with chrome, shiny paint and big horsepower.

OCTANE NIGHTS DOWNTOWN RAVENNA Photos & words by Joe Secka
This event was billed to run from 5 to 9, but early arrivals were there as early as 8 a.m. Steven Prebits of Ravenna pulled his 1969 Chevy Pickup into A&W’s parking lot in the early hours so he could get a nice spot off of the road. Rain has been frequently known to visit Octane Nights but not this year. The weather was perfect for checking out some of the amazing vehicles, catching up with old friends and making a few new ones. Car clubs and smaller groups often arrived together and were able to park in the same areas. Bill Hoover’s ‘64 Dodge Polara
The Ravenna Rumble has become a tradition with the cruisers revving up their engines around 7 p.m. to the delight of nearly everyone. Muscle cars, rods, customs, Corvettes, trucks and classics, a large display of Semi Trucks, a funny car and even tractors and farm equipment, provided a great mix of vehicles. The restaurants along the way were busy as could be expected. Somehow cruises and car shows make me hungry as well. Oh well! This event has regularly been voted Crusin’ Times #1 Downtown Event of 500+ cars. They take that distinction seriously with an active campaign during the event each year. Having lost the 2020 event due Covid-19, I expect remarkable things at next year’s show. It might be a good idea to begin making plans to be there or be square! Now, I’m not suggesting you get there when the sun rises, but you might want to exercise good judgement if you want a premier parking spot!

Drag Racers Reunion - A Great Turnout At South Mountain Raceway Photos and story by John McCartney

ith all the crazy stuff going on in the car culture scene this year it has been very hard to get any sort of shows going. So when the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing who normally have an event at their museum, which was not able to take place like normal this year. The members of the museum looked to another way to bring attention to the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing and those they came up with the very first Drag Racers Reunion. Plans quickly came together with the help of Mike Natoli and his staff at South Mountain Raceway located in Boiling Springs, Pa. You see, South Mountain Raceway is located very nearby to the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing so it made perfect sense to hold an event at the race track. In addition this means folks could not only bring their cars out to show but they could also race as well. So many cool cars from all of the decades of the sport of drag racing and hot rodding days came through the gates on a perfect Sunday. While it was just a little bit on the warm side everyone had a great time checking out all the cool cars that were on display. Every square inch of the South Mountain Raceway quickly filled up with folks and cars. Both sides of the track feature all types of great looking cars to be checked out. On top of the mountain which overlooks the drags strip the car show/cruise filled up as folks got a chance to show off their rides and take in all the drag racing action. Al Liebmann from RacingJunk.com was on hand and selected a three cool cars which he presented each one with a very special award.

Walking through the pit area, staging lanes and all around folks were treated to a virtual tour into the history of drag racing. For here fans got the chance to check out classic Lyndwood Welding Chassis cars, barn find funny cars, classic gassers all sorts of cool stuff. A very special eliminator running under the class called Vintage Eliminator which featured an outstanding selection of Flatheads and Bangers to do battle. All of these cars were brought together under the guidance of EJ Kowalski and his family. As always his mom was hard at work greeting all the fans in the pit area while working hard selling some real groovy Kowalski merchandise. In honor of his hard work EJ was presented with the very special honor of getting the Stanley and Norma Shoppel award which EJ was very proud to accept on behalf of himself and his family. Along with the Vintage Eliminator racers could take part in a number of classes put on by the folks at South Mountain Raceway. The fine folks at Mandra were on hand with a good selection of members who brought out all sorts of cool cars to do battle in the various Mandra classes. Everyone needed to keep their eyes and ears tuned to the action on the track for throughout the day all sorts of pieces of drag racing history could be found making runs on the track. From nitro powered front motored dragster in a great cackle fest right in front of the fans. To the funny cars of Chris Massarella and the George family filling the drag strip with tire smoking action much to the delight of all the fans. Bruce Larson who has driven so much in his long history in the sport of drag racing took part in the event as well. Larson put on the classic looking breather mask and helmet and fired up Stan Shoppel Midnight Express twin nitro breathing front motored dragster to the delight of everyone. Mike Dunn who also spent many years behind the wheel of a funny car and really grew up in the sport touring around the country with his dad Big Jim Dunn was also on hand. Dunn jumped behind the mic to tell some stories of his early days and what is like to drive a funny car along side South Mountain track announcer Walter Frey. Bob Hill had his wild and crazy Bustin Loose altered at the event to make some passes as well. So many classic front motored dragster took to the track for even more great drag racing action.
Gordie Ford’s famous “Marylander” Mid-Atlantic Gasser
With the first Drag Racers reunion in the books you can count the second edition of the Drag Racers Reunion will be back in 2021. As you can bet that Mike Natoli and his staff at South Mountain Raceway will be working hard with the folks at the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing to make the second running of the event even more special and larger in scale and size for even more of look back in time for all the fans. In the meantime make sure to check out the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing located near by in York Springs, Pa and all the cool stuff located inside you will not be sorry. ~ John

FIRST WEEKEND ROAD TRIP...
2004 NHRA HOT
E
arly in June of 2004, John (Shapiro) suggested that we get some other guys and take a trip south to the upcoming NHRA Hot Rod Reunion at Beech Bend Park in Bowling Green, KY!!! I was all in for this since we had just finished the second major revise of the T-Bucket! It needed a good run to make sure all was right with the new rebuild! I met all the guys at the Denny’s in Medina and the trip was under way! John and his son, Andy led the way in Karen’s ‘29, followed by yours truly in the bucket, Don Kieliszek in his ‘58 Chevy and Bob Lowther in his ‘40 Ford. The weather was cloudy with a chance of rain for the whole trip! Obviously, we were very aware of the possibility of getting wet! We made it to Louisville, KY and stopped for dinner. While we were eating, the rain hit and left a bunch of rain!!! (Luckily, I had added drain holes as part of the latest revise!) With the rain concern out of the way, we made it to Bowling Green with no more worries. The drive into Beech Bend Park was excellent! The rolling hills and countryside was a pleasure to drive through! The pictures that follow pretty much tell the story of the whole weekend! It was fantastic to be able to mingle with the drivers and other folks who brought their cars to the beautiful hills of Kentucky! To check out more pics from the trip, go to the following link: https://dustmanart.smugmug.com/PastAnnual-Cruises-Throughout/Road-Trip-to-BowlingGreen/i-LrgdRKg. Enjoy!!!

MID-OHIO CHAPTER CAR SHOW & SWAP MEET By Steve Schaeffer, V.P.
Mid-Ohio Chapter Car Show & Swap Meet by Steve Schaeffer, V.P.
T
he Mid-Ohio Chapter held their 33rd annual all Oldsmobile Car Show and Swap Meet on September 15, 2019. The event was held at the home of the club sponsor, Haydocy Buick GMC in Columbus, Ohio. This event could easily be a regional show. We have 34 classes covering the years from 1897 thru 2004. If Oldsmobile produced the vehicle, we have a class for it. We have 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place trophies in each class. In addition, we have 6 special awards, Longest Distance, Best Paint, Best Interior, Best Engine, Youngest Entrant, and People’s Choice. This is a point judged show. The club uses a 200 point system and deduct and document the same way we judge at the Nationals using OCA guidelines. The areas judged are Body, Paint, Chrome, Glass, Tires/Wheels, Undercarriage, Interior Hardware and Software, Engine, Trunk, and Spirit Items. Just like at the Nationals you must have a fire extinguisher also. Modified classes are for cars that have any visible modifications done to them. Cars in stock classes are judged as a stock car. Visible modifications result in a deduction of points. Modified cars are judged on workmanship and overall presentation, not on the number of modifications. The key rule is we are here to have fun, not to tear down someone’s car.

We get a good cross representation from class 1 cars that could win best of Class or Best of Show at any event, to a few Class 5 cars. As you can see from the photos we really had some spectacular cars. Most of the cars are driven to the event and with a beautiful sunny day everyone had a great time. Our Swap Meet Vendors had a good selection of prime Oldsmobile parts. There was a good selection of NOS parts. {New Old Stock}. In addition there was a good selection of used parts, hats, t-shirts, and Oldsmobile key fobs. Besides great trophies we have food and beverages, a great DJ that you can actually hear, dash plaques to the 1st 100 registered, 50/50 drawing, and door prizes. The 50/50 proceeds benefit the R.E. Oldsmobile Transportation Museum. Haydocy Buick GMC is a wonderful place to hold a show. With interstate access, a beautiful large paved lot, and an air conditioned show room and clean modern rest rooms, you couldn’t ask for a nicer facility. We were able to do registration, door prizes, 50/50 and awards in the west showroom. The show itself was in the west lot with plenty of exposure and lots of room to park cars. We had 75 show cars and had a great turn out from our club members. Everyone really pitched in and the committee can’t thank them enough for all the hard work. We had fun and a great event. Plans for 2020 are currently on hold due to current conditions. In addition our sponsor, Haydocy Buick GMC is being sold. There is a good chance that our next all Oldsmobile Show will be in 2021. We have had a great run for 33 years and we will still be going strong once all the dust settles. -Steve

Rides Dave’s 1999 Ford P/U Mason, OH.
This 1999 Ford Ranger has been in our family since I bought it new. I drove it for years, and eventually then passed it on to our son Jim’s wife, Angie. Angie drove it for a while and then it basically sat ‘till it was passed to our oldest son Paul who would drive it when he came home on month long visits from California. October of 2019 I borrowed it to move some furniture for our grand daughter. I noticed it looked like something sitting behind an abandoned gas station and asked my son if I could reclaim it. He was good with it, so I have been working on it to make it look like a rat rod ‘50’s garage/ push truck. I’m hoping to be able to go crusin’ with my best girl of 40 years Suzanne soon.
Doug’s 1969 Dodge Charger Erie, PA. After several years of long extra hours after a hard days work at their business my two sons Ryan and Shawn finished restoring my 1969 Dodge Charger. I bought my first 69 Charger as a used car in 1970. Through life’s events I eventually sold that car and many, many years later in 2005 I picked up this car. After I retired several years ago we finally got serious about restoring it. If it were not for the help of my two sons I still wouldn’t have it finished. I am submitting this not so much to show off the car as much as I am to let the world know how thankful I am to have such great sons. They did the complete restoration except for having the 451 stroker put together by Muscle Motors.

Here’s my 1937 Chevy Coupe that we call “Frankenstein”. Our ‘37 Chevy is Pro Street with a 468 Big Block.
Scott’s 1970 Chevelle Mogadoore, OH. Here is my 1970 Chevelle Malibu Convertible 350 - It has 250 hp, a turbo 350 numbers matching drivetrain, painted cranberry red pearl with white interior. It has power steering, PW, PB, power top, and a/c. It has the build sheet, protecto plate, warranty card, original owners manual. Very well documented. I have spoken with the original owner of this car many times who ordered this car back in 1969. The Chevelle is a very fun enjoyable car. Top goes up for storage and goes down in the summer.

Classic Rockers & Hot Rods
S
ince the earliest days, Hot Rods and Rock n Roll have always been tied together. Both came about due to a bit of rebelliousness of their creators and have stayed tied together since. But they were usually portrayed (especially in 50’s/60’s movies) as the Rockers entertaining the Rodders. But some very popular Rockers just happen to be Hot Rodders, too. Most, due to the precious value of their fingers, stay at the design stage and have their dream wheels built. Others, like Jeff Beck, who is one of the best guitarists around, say “Damn the torpedoes, I like building them, too!” Beck loves roadsters and coupes and has built plenty. Some are bit by the racing bug, and not bad at it. Brian Johnson of AC/DC loves road racing and has a collection of vintage racers that he’s more than happy to thrash around. Ex-Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony is a fullblown muscle car guy and likes to tinker, but leaves the bigtime work to the pro’s. Eric Clapton (because he can) collects vintage Ferrari’s and Mini Coopers. Neil Young? Well, he worked with a group of engineers to convert his ’59 Lincoln to full, regenerative electric power. I saw a video of this, and this car is part 50’s land yacht and part Jetsons, and it’s his daily driver. Others that pop up are James Hetfield (Metallica) and Jimmy Vaughn’s killer ’63 Riviera. But Now, think the 80’s. Eliminator. Sharp Dressed Man. ZZ Top, and you land at the front steps of Billy F. Gibbons. He and Dusty and Frank have been blues-rockin’ for over 50 years and through it all BFG has loved cars. He started out getting his hands dirty but once they started performing over 250+ dates a year, and success started
generating C-A-S-H, Billy started taking his visions to those that could make it happen for him. Everything from raw roadsters to lavish customs (like Boyds’ Cadzilla). Which leads to my shameless plug of his book, “Billy F Gibbons - Rock+Roll Gearhead”. Saw this advertised in June. “Order your autographed copy!” And since it was right around my birthday and Fathers Day, I placed the order and told Annie what she just bought me . Gotta say, I can count on one finger, the number of times that an online purchase has EXCEEDED my expectations, and this book was it. Its in 3 parts. First, is about ZZ Top. Next, a big section with all his cars and bikes. And finishes up with his collection of guitars. Each of the cars and guitars gets plenty of play as far as how each one came to be. When we saw them in Sept. 2019 they had a coupe blowin’ down a Texas road in the background. Hard to see details from our seats, but there it is in the book. ‘Whiskey Runner’ is a ’34 chopped coupe with Caddy mill, with skinnies all around. I did find one issue with the book. Fighting to not blow through the whole thing. So far, I’m hangin’ in there, reading a little at a time. So now that ZZ is in your heads, go jump in your rides, crank up ‘I’m Bad, I’m Nationwide’ and try not to get a ticket on your way to ‘LaGrange’ (uhhow-how-how). Have Fun, Mike

Funny Car Match Racing - East, by John Shapiro A unique look at the fuel funny cars that roamed the Eastern, Midwest and Southern tracks during the late 60’s and 70’s. These “self sponsored” asphalt gypsies did it for love, going from track to track - three and maybe four times a week.
If you remember: The Chi-Town Hustler, the Eastern Raider, the Damn Yankee, the Super Duster, Color Me Gone, Mr. Norm, Jungle Jim Liberman, the Warlord or the Flying Dutchman, then you were there watching a Funny Car Match Race somewhere East of the Mississippi. And... if you remember the Coca-Cola Cavalcade of Stars that made a stop at Dragway 42, Thompson & Pittsburgh, we’ve included a special Color chapter devoted to those burgeoning Funny Car Stars..f
