The Internal Combustion Engine With Only 2 Moving Parts

The first practical 2-stroke commercial engine is attributed to Alfred Scott who started producing motorcycles in 1908. Some inventors of the day speculated that a more efficient 2-stroke engine would win favor with the auto manufacturers due to the simplicity of building and maintaining it.

In the 1920s, Russel Bourke set out to improve the 2-stroke internal combustion engine. At this time, the 2-stroke engine had twice the power for the same engine displacement as a 4-stroke engine.

In Bourke’s design, the Scotch yoke located in the center of the engine contains the only 2 moving parts. The pistons are 180 degrees opposed and move in the same direction, rotating the yoke with each back-and-forth motion.

Bourke’s engine required significantly less fuel per horsepower hour, had significantly lower gas temperatures in the exhaust, and had the ability to run using multi-fuels such as natural gas, propane and many other yet untested fuels. These are just a few of the known efficiencies.

Bourke finished his design and built several working engines, but he faced many challenges in promoting and commercializing his engine. While he believed passionately in the potential benefits and efficiencies of his design, due to lack of test results, he encountered skepticism from the established automotive and engine industries.

Just a thought…since we are looking for efficiencies in motorized transportation, maybe it makes sense to revisit Bourke’s design?

BLUE SUEDE CRUISE

The Blue Suede Cruise has become a mid-summer fixture at Summit Motorsports. The 22nd annual edition, presented by Cometic Gasket, was an opportunity for fans of classic cars to take a step back in time. There certainly was “something for everyone” during the threeday weekend.

Bill Bader Jr., president of Summit Motorsports Park, remarked, “Fueled by nostalgia, the weekend will also offer opportunities to explore special displays and meet special guests. The old-time atmosphere will be out of this world.”

The title sponsor, Lingenfelter Performance Engineering, brought a vast display of products and vehicles. The pits were filled with several hundred racers, and over 2,000 pre1972 vehicles graced the show field. There was plenty to see, no matter where you looked.

Gearheads of all ages gathered, mostly to reminisce about how things used to be and to discuss modern-day cruising. Nearby, the ever-popular Woman’s World tent was present with crafts, fashions, and collectibles to explore. The swap meet area showcased a delightful variety of nostalgiarelated pieces, parts, and vehicles.

Over in the pit area, Wild Bill’s Saloon maintained its cherished tradition of offering ice cream to attendees. Right beside it, the park’s Quarter Mile Clothing shop was stocked with all kinds of related gear and souvenirs.

Registered participants had numerous chances to race their ‘hot rods’ down the quarter mile, testing if they were as fast as they remembered. Fun runs were organized both before and after the nostalgia drag racing each day.

The NDRL (Nostalgia Drag Racing League) graced the event, with over one hundred racers participating across their four classes: Pro 7.0, Pro 7.5, Pro Comp, and Pro Gas. ScottRods AA/Gas racers were also present, much to the fans’ delight. This year’s event was further enriched by the thrilling return of Top Fuel action. The challenge of Autocross track racing, located at the north end of the pit area, was a crowd favorite.

Bo Boles secured the 7.50 Pro title when Jerrod Bradshaw triggered the red light. Robbie Freels continued his dominance in the 7.0 Pro, clocking 7.003 in the final against Cory Millet. Al Lynch clinched the ScottRods burnout contest with his 400-foot smoker. Bowen bested #2 qualifier Jimmy Young 5.66 to 5.74 in the Top Fuel final. Kudos to all the racers!

Throughout the weekend, recorded music from the 1950s to 1970s wafted across the park. Mike Albert and the Big E Band thrilled attendees with an Elvis Presley tribute concert on Saturday evening. After the concert, a spectacular Bader Family Signature Fireworks Show erupted into the night sky. A severe storm swept through late on Friday evening, but the enthusiasm of the attendees remained unshaken!

As the cruisin’ season winds down, some of the unusual car shows and cruises become more prominent in our decisions about where to attend. For me, Marshallville is one of those “unique” events. This event was a favorite of my cruise mentor, John Shapiro. While I may not attend every year, it still has that special attraction for me.

Marshallville is a small town with around 850 residents. The wooded park in the center of “downtown” is huge, and that is where many of the gearheads park for this event. At the Northeast corner of the park sits C.H. Rauch Blacksmith shop and the Historical Society. This is where the magic begins to happen. Bean soup is cooked in a giant cast iron kettle, and delicious fried bologna sandwiches are created. This is great stuff, folks! And you better get in line early before they sell out because, believe me, they always sell out.

Marshallville is a bit out in the country and perhaps a little further drive than some cruisers are accustomed to. The drive through farm country, however, is well worth it at this time of year. Most fields have been harvested, and many have already been tilled in preparation for the next season or perhaps for winter crops. The trees have begun changing color. This wonder of nature in the fall makes it necessary for me to change CRUISIN’ to capital letters! I urge you to relax and enjoy the autumn journey to someplace special or different. Marshallville is about 9 miles southwest of Wadsworth and 12 miles northeast of Wooster. Or, for the more worldly, 350 miles southwest of Philadelphia and 2000 miles northeast of Los Angeles. I try to help out whenever I can. LOL!

In addition to the huge park, the surrounding streets are packed with every kind of vehicle you might imagine. The townspeople don’t seem to mind if the cruisers park on their tree lawns. Look at the photo gallery if you don’t believe what I am saying! I have even seen a few folks with bigger driveways allow parking.

Check the temps, maybe grab a jacket, set the GPS, leave early, and get yourself some “Bucket & Beans”. You won’t regret it!

George’s 1959 Ford Fairlane 500

My 1959 Ford Fairlane 500 mild custom. Custom touches include 58 Edsel spinner wheel covers, tube grill, slight dechroming, cruiser skirts, 59 Edsel instrument cluster and pinstripes. There is also a dash mounted record player in the reupholstered interior. Power comes from an original 200hp 292 Y-Block. Future plans include a new 292 with an aluminum tri-power intake. I purchased the car after from Detroit, Michigan after finding it online. I am the 3rd owner. The car was in the 2022 Piston Power Autorama, 2022 Choppers Show and the 2023 Piston Power Autorama. It has also been to various local shows and cruises.

Dan’s “RivRodr “ ‘64 Riviera

This is my 1964 Riviera. It’s never been shown yet. It’s been a complete resto on the wild side. It has a 468 ci. BB with a 671 blower, Dual 850 eldelbrock carbs, Roller cam, lifters and rockers. It as the stock front frame with tubular A-Arms and coil over shocks. Also Back halfed with a 4 link system, Ford 9” w/posi. 18.5 x 31 hoosiers. Completely done interior with several modifications. I’m planning on debuting at the Street Scene cruise at Austintown Park.

Chris’ 1971 Chevy Monte Carlo

This is my 1971 Chevy Monte Carlo with 45,000 original miles. It has the original interior, a 350 motor with 292 cam, holley carburetor, summit intake, 2800 stall converter and 3 inch Flowmaster exhaust.

Jeff’s “Pumpkin Spice” ‘57 Chevy

I bought this car in November 2021. I can remember riding my bike around my neighborhood when I was 10 and there was a 57 Chevy always parked in the street in front of this guy’s house. Even to this day I can show you exactly where that car was parked. Ever since then I have always wanted one. So when the opportunity presented itself I jumped on it. This car was restored in the mid 80s but it the almost 2 years I’ve had it I have done a tone of work to it. I’ve had the entire front clip off to repaint it inside and out (rock chips) I have replaced every piece of the steering and suspension. I did all the upholstery in the trunk. Painted the engine air cleaner and valve covers. And lots of other things. My next plan is to add air ride.

Tom’s 1959 VW Dune Buggy

I purchased the dune buggy body about 30 years ago in Ohio. It is known as a Kellison Sandpiper. The body was in fair condition, but I have modified it inside and out. Once the frame was finished, the orange, green, silver and yellow metal flake paint was completed by Harmony Don of Jamboozie Customs, Harmony, PA. I then added new parts, tires, wires and lights. The interior was custom fabricated with black leather bucket seats and carpet.

The most unique features include a frameless windshield, frenched headlamps and rear tail lamps, beer keg fuel tank with a 1970’s Mopar flip top cap and sight glass on side for fuel gauge. Dune was completed in April 2021. Since completion, we have taken the buggy to various shows and won several awards and trophies. I enjoy the looks and comments and am very proud of this project and how it has become a truly one of a kind.

My Mom, who passed in 2020, my brothers Marty and Johnny, my friends, Don Chriest, Danny Cummins, Mike Genser and Cathi Olinger were all very instrumental in getting this project completed. A memorial to my Mom is painted on the passenger side dashboard as my “co-pilot”. Without my Mom’s help and support, this project would have not been possible.
