Randomly Speaking Garage Clean Up..

very once in a while you have to get the garage cleaned up bit. I always find all sorts of interesting stuff, mainly stuff I thought I had lost. The more you clean, the more you realize garages aren’t meant to be cleaned. It’s a garage. You should be able to spray paint something and have some over-spray all over the wall and not have to worry about it. Bolts should be on the floor and not put away someplace where you can’t find them. The great thing about the floor is - nothing can fall off of it, and the great thing about leaving bolts on a floor is just drive your car over the bolts, get under the car, look up and you’ll find where the bolt fell from and now everything can be attached.

2 guys would show up in a old pickup loaded to the brim with “stuff’ in order to help get these unfortunate “clean freaks” back on the right track. Of course the stuff in the truck would be absolute junk that wouldn’t even sell at a garage sale. That way it’s gotta stay in the garage. That’s another thing, they should change the name of “Garage Sales”. We aren’t selling a garage, we’re selling the stuff in it. It should be called “Stuff Sale”, “Crap Sale”, or better yet ‘Garbage Sales’. Same thing is true of Yard Sales. If ya want my yard you can have it, then I won’t have to mow it anymore, which means I can sell the mower and it’ll look like I cleaned the garage.

Ever drive through those new sub-divisions and notice someone has left their garage open so you can see how clean their garage is? There’s usually nothing on the wall, no stains on the floor, and no tool boxes. They’re just as clean as a whistle. That’s wrong, totally wrong. People with garages like that need a hobby. Again I tell ya...garages are meant to be dirty. There should be dirt and dust on the floor and there should be spider webs, too. Those spiders have to live, eat and raise a family, would you rather them in the house or in the garage? I’m also all for establishing a “Garage Police Squad” that would put a stop to that kind of “cleaning disorder.” Arbitrarily the “GPS” would roam the neighborhood equipped with a “master garage door opener” and at any given Saturday afternoon, they’d do a’ “garage-door-driveby”. If they find a clean garage, they’d have the authority to issue a citation, which includes a $50 dollar fine that is automatically sent to the local Flea Market. Posters are also a good way to cover up all the holes in the dry wall. For some of the larger holes I use a Pennzoil Oil banner that I borrowed from Dragway 42 back in the 80s, I just haven’t gotten around to returning it and they haven’t gotten around to calling to say they’re missing it. I also have a Summit banner, ‘cause they advertise with us - it shows loyalty. There should always be something on a Garage wall. That’s what God intended car show posters for. We have a bunch of posters on the wall, all lined up by year, so when someone comes over they can say “You went to all those shows?!” Yes I did. Then ya point to one of the posters and say, “Yeah, that one is from ‘97, the year I had 8 hot dogs at the show!” That’s what memories are made of. ...course that’s just me randomly speaking.

hen Cadillac introduced the 1949 models, it included design trends that would carry into the fifties and beyond. The larger chrome grille, a hint of tail fins that would continue to grow until peaking out in 1959 and a streamlined roof-line on the Club Coupe were key parts of the new model. The Club Coupe became better known as the Sedanette. A new overhead valve V8 powered this car

weighing in at just less than 4000 pounds and priced at just under $3000. In November, Motor Trend magazine declared the 1949 Cadillac it’s very first “Car of the Year!” Bob Darney was attracted to this automobile for twenty years before a friend found the one that then would become his newest project. The Caddy was brought home from Farrell, PA in poor condition. But Bob had a vision and

he began on an eighteen month journey to the masterpiece seen in the accompanying photos. The frame and front suspension are by Fat Man Fabrications with rack & pinion steering and disc brakes all around. Air Ride Tech supplied the rear suspension and this connects to the pavement through Coker wire wheels and P 235-75-15 tires. October 2018 ~ Cruisinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Times 11

straight and true, PPG Pistachio paint was applied and finally tricked out with pinstriping by Guy Shively of Austintown, OH. Bob said picking out the final color was the most challenging part of the build. Chrome work was completed by Keystone of Cleveland.

The rear quarters were welded on and roof drip rails were removed. Up front, the headlights sport redesigned housings and the parking lights were relocated. Once the body was

hidden behind the radio delete panel. Bob spent a lot of days and evenings building this ride as he was pretty much the only one who worked on it from start to finish other than the contracted out items. Bob and his wife, Sue, drive the Caddy daily in the summer with a few local cruises as favorite destinations although they have also traveled ninety plus miles to a Pittsburgh event.

Bob shares his pride and joy with others too! He escorts a couple or two each year for their high school prom nights by suiting up in a tux and making the couple’s arrival something special. Even the limo drivers are intrigued with envy when this classic pulls up! One evening, Bob was getting gas in a ’55 Chevy he was working on and a gentleman approached and asked if he knew of anyone with an old car that would be willing to take his grandfather to a graduation party for his granddaughter. He certainly asked the right person that question. The elderly man had cancer and was given a short time to live. A few days later, Bob donned his tux, climbed into the Caddy, and picked up the guy for a ride to see his granddaughter. Riding up front, he had tears in his eyes when he told Bob his favorite car was a Cadillac and that this was one of the best days of his life! It has often been said, Cadillac – The Standard of the World and I would agree it is quite true in this case! Stay Classy My Friends - Joe

A True Car Lovers Paradise Photos and Story by John McCartney

ach and every year the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse, New York opens it gates to what only can be called a car lovers paradise. The PPG Syracuse Nationals is three days of cars of all shapes and styles. Whether you are into classic muscle cars, hot rods, customs, vintage racecars, it is all here at the Syracuse Nationals. Cars and owners start to set up on Thursday even though the show does not really kick off until Friday. Everyone wants to get up to the Syracuse Nationals early to set up their camp sites and get together with fellow car lovers many of who they have not seen since the previous year. On Friday bright and early the gates swing open and even more cars and fans come pouring into the New York State Fairgrounds. However there is more to the Syracuse Nationals than the thousands and thousands of cars and car lovers. Fans can walk through a giant vendor midway where they can pick up all the latest

information and gadgets to make and improve their rides. In addition to all the newest parts and pieces fans can check out a huge swap meet filled with all the classic parts to fix up that project that many have started and hope to get completed. From parts to complete cars one can find it in the rows and rows of vendors in the swap meet. There are many special displays that can be found throughout the New York State Fairgrounds complex. Artie’s Party has been happening for over ten years now under the guidance of Artie Schilling. Artie’s Party brings together some of the finest artists in the country to who produce one of kind pieces of artwork over the run of the show. All of this classic artwork is then auctioned off with all the money going to Ronald McDonald House Charities, well over seventy thousand dollars is raised over the run of the show. In addition to all of the artwork this year Artie Cruiser a 1964 Pontiac Safari Wagon was on display the car which is a stunning piece of work will be auctioned off at the Saratoga Auto Auction in September. Also inside of Artie’s Party is the Gasoline Alley a cool display of vintage racecars, which brings folks back to the early days of drag racing and hot rodding. Noted car builder Gene Winfield picks out six great customs to be on display as part of Winfield Select Six, which is also housed as part of Artie’s Party. For those that wanted to go back to the future John Sbrigato had his Back to the Future movie car on display as well.

Ol’Skool Roundup is a complete show in to itself complete with another swap meet, ol’skool hot rods and cool music during the run of the event. his is a great, relatively new, cruise that’s held in the well hidden Manry Park, located just off of E305th St. (30100 Arnold Rd.) in Willowick, Ohio. They have a community center that hosted over 100+ classic cars and hot rods of all kinds during their first two years. These photos were taken from the second year (2017). I regretfully missed this years show due to prior commitments. Considering the fact that there were numerous other car shows available on this particular day, the results this year were impressive.

This is a cruise that’s organized and presented by the City of Willowick It involves a whole team of folks that work tirelessly to put on a spectacular event. 3 Years Without Water

hree years ago I bought a vehicle which I have taken pretty good care of. My first purchase for it was a set of rubber mats to protect the interior carpets and from that point on all I have done is wash it at least once a week, wax it from time to time and vacuum it here and there. Each time I would remove the floor mats about 90% of any dirt and debris was caught on the rubber, however, the other 10% of dirt was stuck in areas the mats didn’t cover. This would be mostly the left foot rest, gas and brake pedal area as well as a small amount of dirt around the edges of where the mat meets the carpeting. So after 3 years I decided to finally shampoo the interior. I have leather so it was just the floor boards and they really weren’t too bad. The most amount of dirt was stuck all around the gas pedal. Frankly, there was quite a bit of it and this is where many people can quickly turn a non-problem, into a big problem. By using a horse hair style detail brush, I was able to brush all the dirt into a pile to simply vacuum up. Had I taken cleaner and water and sprayed it down, it would have created a real mess. Picture this... dry dirt is very easy to vacuum

up, however, wet dirt makes mud which easily travels through the carpeting, spreading it all over the place, which creates real stains that could be avoided. Once I brushed and then vacuumed up the dirt it was only at that point that I took a damp microfiber cloth with just water to wipe away the top dust and the hard surfaces around it. I used no chemical and up until the final wipe, I used no water. The key when cleaning any material is less water is better and rather than trying to clean the whole area at one time, it is better to clean one section at a time. Use brushes to loosen debris, use the vacuum to remove it and if there is “crust” in the carpets, use hot water and you’ll be in great shape. The steam will take care of the rest. For real stains, using a cleaner for that will go a long way.

How Do We (YOU!) Do It ???

m I alone on this one? I see guys that seem to kick out new, quality builds at what seems like a yearly basis. Now, I’m not talking about the people with ‘big block bucks’ that buy new cars like I buy gas. To those folks, hats off to you! Glad you’re in a position to do that. And that’s an easy one to answer. No, I’m talking about the folks that are banging away building stuff and still popping out cars like a PEZ dispenser. I mean, it’s like Magic! Is there a mysterious garage that is like a hotrod assembly line that they use? Meanwhile, “Back in the Jungle”, I’m fabricating left & right but need almost a freakin’ decade to get a car done. What’s the secret? How do they (YOU?) do it?! Our Choppers Rod & Custom Show prides itself on the long-standing rule of ‘no repeats’, unless serious modifications have been made to that vehicle, yet every year more beautiful stuff rolls out. Sure, some came back after being out of the show for a few years but every year we’re treated to more new, fresh stuff…and the thing is, a lot of these cars are coming from the same bunch of folks as the previous year entries. So, to you folks that are popping these things out like birthdays and anniversaries, tell us the secret(s). Again, Hotrod assembly line or what??? My Wife’s ’37 Nash has a frame 90% done, the 472 Caddy is 80%, Cab bodywork same. Haven’t even scratched the surface on the fenders (all need varying degrees of bodywork) and

then comes custom stuff, wiring harness, paint, interior, yada-yada… and I’m 7 years in!!! Sure, the 4 kids are all grown but now there’s 8 grandkids (birthdays, graduations, etc.). Now we add in the daily driver repairs, house and yard, and plus the “Honey, let’s go do something”. Oh yeah, almost forgot about the full-time job. And that’s the other thing. How are you handling all of Life’s ‘stuff’ and still pulling this off? So, I repeat, “How in the Sam Hill are some of you doing it???” You’re like Jeannie (Wow) or the Samantha Stevens (Bewitched) of car building. One ‘blink or ‘nosetwitch’ and POOF!, a killer hotrod appears. So I’m reaching out to you Wizards to help show us the way. Send us an email or letter so we might be able to gain some of your powers and get a car on the road quicker. And, to my fellow ‘Mortals’, feel free to send us Your thoughts on how you think these guys pull it off (real or crazy made up stuff, all welcome here). We’ll gather up whatever you send in and it should make for a great follow up article down the road. Till then I’ll keep slugging away. Oh wait, have to go to the granddaughter’s dance recital. The cars consist of a great blend of nut-and-bolt restorations and extremely well-done restomods. The motorcycle is a very well-done custom. The 2 freestanding engines are very fresh builds with only run time on the stands. 1957 CHEVROLET 150 BUSINESS COUPE: This car is built on an Art Morrison frame with all of the best components. It has a 430 ci stroker motor built by Malicuit Racing Engines of Strasburg, OH. The engine produces approx. 500HP. The transmission is a 700R. There are Wilwood disc brakes all around. The rear wheel wells have been tubbed. There are approx. 5,000 miles on this build. The paint is wonderful. 1955 CHEVROLET: It has been built the way it should be. The black paint is great, and the Jim Roll interior is proper for a car of this style. The engine has 454 ci. There is a Richmond 6-spd. transmission. There are disc brakes all around and the suspension show significant upgrades. The rear rides on air bags. 2014 JAGUAR XJ 3.0 AWD: This car has 5,500 miles on it and exhibits extreme attention to its care. Both the interior and exterior present as nearly perfect. 1968 PLYMOUTH GTX: This car is not to be missed. It is a 2-owner car with a 426 Hemi engine believed to be the original motor. It has a 4-spd. transmission. The engine has a replacement carburetor and an MSD ignition with the original parts included in the trunk. There is little to say except that this is an absolutely Blue Chip Mopar. 1970 CUDA: Another wonderful Mopar. This is a 383 ci high-performance 4-spd. car with pistol shifter. It is Plum Crazy in color with the correct stripes on the flanks. The owner is uncertain as to the originality of the motor. The car presents a very correct restoration. 2011 CUSTOM V-TWIN MOTORCYCLE: This bike is built on a Bourget frame. The motor and transmission are S&S. It is a 100 SE motor. The paint is excellent. 1927 FORD ROADSTER: This is an extremely interesting car. It was originally constructed as a drag car with a tube chassis. The owner had it converted to its current configuration primarily by having the roll cage removed and the frame appropriately reinforced. The engine is a blown 604 ci. Chevrolet with Arias Hemi heads. It dyno’d at 1,004 HP at the crank. The transmission is by Lenco. The paint and interior have been done to an excellent standard. The car is an absolute jewel to look at. 1955 CHEVROLET NOMAD: This Nomad has had an absolutely correct nut-and-bolt restoration. The engine is an original style 265 ci with a 4-barrel carburetor. The transmission is automatic and underneath is as clean as the top side. The interior is perfect. It is an extremely collectible Chevrolet. 1957 CHEVROLET BEL AIR CONVERTIBLE: Another wonderfully restored car. The engine is a correct 283 ci with a 3-spd. column shift transmission. The paint, top, and interior present better than new. This was a California car and has been given a frame-off restoration. 1967 CHEVROLET CAMARO: This car was built as a faithful recreation of a Nickey Motors Camaro. It has a correct Chevrolet 427 ci motor and an automatic transmission. The car even has the chambered exhaust system. The top and paint are extremely nice. 1958 CHEVROLET BEL AIR 2-DOOR HARD TOP: This is a great representation of the era. The light blue paint, twin antennas, tri-color interior, and continental kit are all what one would expect. The engine is a 348 ci tri-power with an automatic transmission. STAND ALONE ENGINES: FRESHLY BUILT FORD FLATHEAD: The engine was built as a stroker motor with Offenhauser heads and intake which includes 3 deuces. The displacement is 286 ci. It includes Scat rods and Ross pistons. The engine has been balanced and blueprinted. 461 CI CHEVROLET BIG BLOCK: This is a professionally built motor using a 454 tall deck block. The block appears to be a later version as it has the one-piece rear main seal. It has Trick Flow heads, (2) 4-barrel carburetors, and intake from Edelbrock.
