Randomly Speaking Small towns and back roads I like the interstate highway system. When you need to get someplace fast, there’s nothing like it. But when you’re in a nostalgic frame of mind, it just makes more sense to take the back roads and visit the small towns along the way. As you drive through them you can’t help wonder what the towns folk do for a living. I’d love to know what these people do. Where do they work? There doesn’t seem to be any giant office building either, which I think are directly responsible for creating a hectic way of life. The back roads allow you to go back in time, anytime you want. Just hope in your old car or truck and find a back road that will take you to a show or cruise-in and you’ll have the time of your life. It’s almost like 3 events in one. The first part is the scenery, the second is the show and the third part is...well you get to see what you missed goin’ the other way. There’s no mammoth entrance and exit ramps, no huge green signs directing you through the country to your destination, either. You’ve actually got to pay attention. At any moment the road might abruptly turn and you could be headed up Kukumonga so using your cruise control is a definite no no. As a matter of fact your cell phone probably won’t work either, so you’re forced to have fun and actually enjoy the trip. Just because the storm of century blew over a highway sign, doesn’t mean the county sign “putterupper” has had the time to hang a replacement. Again, you’ll have to keep your eyes on the road and pay attention. You might also want to turn your radio off, just so you get the full treatment, if you’re lucky you could hear a cow moo or a chicken cluck. I like that. Sure every now and then you’ll pass the 6 Cruisin’ Times ~ October 2019

“commercial areas” filled with those big box stores and box restaurants, but for the most part, small towns are just like they are supposed to be, unchanged, only the trees have gotten bigger. Each little village seems to say, “Hi, I’m still here, still keeping these families together, still keeping those family values alive”. It’s places like Loudonville and Marshallville, each with a little restaurant that has a waitress who will most likley call you honey, sweetie or muffin. And you bet the muffins are made fresh with extra blue berries and you won’t get the famous phrase, “Hi I’ll be your server our specials are zucchini draped in a cantonese sauce served with minced onions for $28.50” In this issue you’ll find a whole lot of small town events, both featured and listed. All you have to do is get out a map and plot your way via a back road. There’s plenty of cruisin’ left to do and plenty of scenic memories to be made. Later this month cruisers from all areas will be undertaking the task of re-tracing the Lincoln highway from coast to coast. We’ll be taking the back roads and visiting small towns as much as possible too. I think the real reason most people don’t like to take the back roads is because it takes too much time. At our age, time is highly important, so I think we should make better use of it. There’s plenty of places to cruise and plenty of scenic memories to be made. ...course that’s just me randomly speaking.

The 10th Annual MAPS Air Museum Benefit Car Show presented by The Don Sitts Auto Group took place on June 8, 2019. MAPS Air Museum is an internationally known museum of aviation and serves as a center of aviation history for Northeast Ohio. The museum features exciting educational displays of its collection of acquired artifacts, interactive exhibits and historical archives in its own library. This event helps raise funding to continue their important project. This year’s show also paid tribute to Dick Bahnick who had passed away last fall. Bahnick had a passion for cars and racing and built several stock cars that raced locally. An excellent mechanic, he built several dune buggies in his lifetime. There were several of his maroon painted builds staged just outside the museum hangar. Two are currently owned by Kevin Suszynski.

The sunny day attracted a large number of both participants and spectators. You could check out the various vehicles and enjoy the vintage military aircraft at the same time. In many cases, the planes provided an excellent background for photos. There are numerous planes in both restored and unrestored condition that can be viewed during the museums regular operating hours as well. Dash Plaques and goody bags were handed out to the first 200 and awards went to the Top 20 Picks, Best of Show and the Top Flight MAPS Award too! Food Vendors, 50/50 Raffle, music by Bruce, and the 48 aircraft onsite provided additional attraction. This is certainly a show worth keeping in mind for next year. That’s all I have - Joe

There may be no popular collector scene than that of the folks that collect Hot Wheels cars. These little toy cars have been around for over fifty years now and show no signs of slowing down. A day does not go by that you can not find folks of all ages looking through racks of Hot Wheels in the local stores trying to find the newest and latest offerings from the Hot Wheels folks. Anyone that belongs to the Hot Wheels Nation seem to know just what is new and hot and in all the latest styles. From the famous Treasure Hunts to all the small changes that can be found on any of the regular series. It is really amazing that folks can look at all the cars on the racks and know that this one has a slight change in color or the wheels are different as well. So with all this in mind that in to honor their fifty years in making this cool cars that last year Hot Wheels put together the Hot Wheels Legend Tours in support of the 50th birthday of Hot Wheels. Well flash forward to 2019 and with the huge response the tour received last year the folks at Hot Wheels decided 18 Cruisinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Times ~ October 2019

to keep the wheels rolling and launched the 2019 Hot Wheels Legend Tour. The 2019 edition of the tour found the Hot Wheels folks traveling the entire United States stopping along the way at various Wal Marts stores taking over the parking lots of these stores and turning them into what could be best called a Woodstock for Hot Wheel lovers. The stop in the New York area was found at the Wal Mart parking lot in Secaucus, New Jersey right near the New York City skyline. At each and every stop folks got a chance to bring out their own cars and display them in hopes of being picked for the chance to have their very own rides turned in a Hot Wheels die cast car and then sold in the stores around the world. Folks lined up bright and early to have their cars take part in the show. From hot rods, crazy customs, muscle cars, modern muscle cars it did not matter as along it had the cool Hot Wheels feel you had a chance to be picked out and go into the running for the special honor. Along with all the cars of the local folks fans got a chance to check out full size cars of some of the iconic Hot Wheels cars, a very cool one of a kind shot at checking out Hot Wheels history. In addition to these special cars there were great race cars,

full size hot rod shopping karts, booths with all sorts of ways to spend the day. Fans could purchase special one of a kind Hot Wheels Legend Tours merchandise which fans could not wait to stand in line to snap up to show their love for Hot Wheels. Hot Wheels collectors lined up bright and early well before the Wal Mart opened their doors hoping to look through special cases once again looking for more one of a kind Hot Wheels cars. When they spent twenty dollars they could take the receipts out to a special booth were they were given a chance to spin a wheel which gave them a number which opened a vending machine and gave them another one of a kind Hot Wheels car. Hot Wheels proves one thing for sure no matter what your age if you come up with a toy which continues to change and improve it you will have a hit that will last for many many years with everyone both young and old male or female. Everyone loves Hot Wheels they have for the past fifty years and will no doubt for another fifty years to come. The Hot Wheels Legend Tours will continue to travel around the United States spreading and promoting the Hot Wheels brands to those very folks and getting a brand new collector groups along the way. ~ John

The “No Wax” Guaranteed Shine This year I am celebrating 30 years in the Auto Reconditioning industry. My roots stem back to the Blue Coral Wax days, just at the end of an era where cleaning and waxing your car was an all day job. Over the years paint technology has become so advanced that the need to wax, glaze or polish your vehicle on a regular basis to keep it shiny is almost a thing of the past. Realistically, the more you wash your vehicle, the cleaner it stays which will help eliminate the need to wax it all together (If you so choose). I am not saying not to wax your vehicle. I am just saying that if you do not want to take the time to do so, you could get away with just washing it on a regular basis while still having your vehicle looking dynamite. Case in point, I bought a vehicle in 2015 and right now, I have 110,000 miles on it. It has been driven extensively through every type of weather and (Yes), I have never waxed it. This is the only vehicle I have ever owned that did not

get at least 2 - 3 coats of something every month. But what I have been doing is running an experiment of which here are the results. By washing your vehicle at least 1 – 2 times per week, you can avoid purchasing any type of wheel cleaner, as break dust will have no time to build up on your wheels and rims and you can avoid spending the time to wax it, however, if you want it to have a “deep shine”, then you will have to coat it at least 4 times per year. Additionally, tar, tree sap, road salt and other contaminants will have a harder time sticking to your finish, making those issues much easier to remove. All in all whether you choose to wax all the time or not, keeping your vehicle clean through washing goes a long way regardless of what direction you decide to go in.

ach year, more than 35,000 spectators came to the Trumbull County Fairgrounds over Labor Day weekend for a free event for families that includes food, entertainment, cars and tractors. The Glenn Christian Church (in Warren Township) hosted this annual ox roast and classic car, truck, motorcycle and tractor show! The event was started by Pastor Frank and Linda Glenn at the church grounds as a Labor Day weekend picnic. Over the years, it grew so much that it had to be moved to the fairgrounds. It was there the final 12 years of its exsistence. Highlights of the event were free rides, free food, free concerts including the Discovery Channel’s Fat N’ Furious Rolling Thunder, a free children’s activity area, free rides including Ferris wheel and merry-go-round, and a free fireworks finale on Sunday. This show was a highly anticipated event drawing cars and visitors from most adjoining counties and states! Sunday also included free roast beef sandwiches in a brown bag lunch, open-air worship at the grandstand, and the Fat N’ Furious Rolling Thunder during the afternoon.

YouTube TV â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re killinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; me, Smalls!â&#x20AC;&#x2122; Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time. Time for someone to say it out loud (well, as loud as the ink can yell)â&#x20AC;ŚYouTube, you are not perfect! Some of you may still not have watched anything on the YouTube channel/app, but Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m betting that 99.3% of you have heard about it. This channel went from showing dumb people doing dumb things to carrying just about everything and anything. I can go to â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;searchâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and type in, via my remote control, something like, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;drag racingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and get totally lost in a small universe of choices to watch on drag racing. Click on one of these, then your â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;downâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; arrow and Shazam!, it shows even MORE choices. Or, enter with a little more details like â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Vintage NHRA Championshipsâ&#x20AC;? and Wowzers!, up come choices from the 50â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s thru the 80â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s (80â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s?, vintage? Dang, getting old!). It was during this search that I bumped into a video with fellow Chopper Jim Mehalik in it. Yep, it was the 1966 Nationals and, Boom! I hear the announcer calling out, â&#x20AC;&#x153;and hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cleveland native Jim Mehalik and his BB/GD taking the Super Eliminator crown. Wow! Next up, I searched for â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Lou Novotny-Cordovaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and Boom!, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the video of Lou getting run off the Cordova track, splitting his rail on the guardrail, and his Hemi bouncing along until the front of an R.V. brought it to a stop. Whoa!â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re killinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; me, Smalls! Other goodies? Whens the last time you watched an episode of 77 Sunset Strip? Route 66? Or old movies like Ghost of Dragstrip Hollow (with Tommy Ivo, Dragstrip Girl (Chuck Conners) or The Choppers (a really bad movie about staealing/chopping cars)? There all on there. Tons of old TV and movies (Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m watching Season 1 of â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Combatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; right now đ&#x;&#x2DC;&#x160;). So far, pretty cool, right? But nowâ&#x20AC;Śfor â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;the other stuff. YouTube also has a boatload of videoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s that are posted by folks like us, and some professionals, on â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;HowToâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; anything. Have an issue with your vacuum cleaner? Odds are pretty good that there is someone from somewhere who had the same issue and has a video to show you how to fix it. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re like free repair video manuals. Move to Hot

Rod stuff and you can get lost in a hurry, so be specific in your search. Fabrication, bend, shrink, stretch, flare, compound curve â&#x20AC;&#x201C; just ask you receive. But, and this is a Big But đ&#x;&#x2DC;&#x160;, donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t trust everything posted as being youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re perfect solution. Have you ever been taught something by a person (at work, school, garage, whatever) that knows something so well, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s basically an expert, BUT, when it comes to teaching this to someone else, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a lot of missing information? They can DO IT, but not so hot when teaching it. You try it, just like they said to andâ&#x20AC;Śâ&#x20AC;?Danger Will Robinsonâ&#x20AC;?, here comes failure. Drives yaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Nuts! Well, some of these folks make these videoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s too. Some leave out critical details. Maybe they rushed it, but you wind up â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;less than pleased with your resultâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. So, you look for other videoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s on the same thing and, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Great Day in the Morning!â&#x20AC;? you find one that covers everything the other knucklehead left out. Easy to follow and you are Happy! Now, if you watch these on your computer instead of your TV thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a neat feature where other people before you have watched the video and they will leave comments about it. So, in the case of Mr. Knucklehead, someone before you would have gone through the pain and told others to â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;steer clearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. Saves pain and aggravation, and I like that. I have not found this feature on my (so-called) Smart TV. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not saying it isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t there, I just havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t found it. So, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll have to excuse me. I have to call an Expert, a.k.a. one of my grandkids. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll probably roll their eyes, give me â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;the lookâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, and have it in 30 seconds. Happy Searching! ~ Mike

Ray’s Suburban’s Bristolville, OH The Suburban is one of the longest models made. It has the same body style from 1973 to 1991. I have owned twenty six of them. I first started with a 1969. My twenty fourth one was found by my friend Charlie when he was looking for old cars and parts out in California. He brought the car back with his load of cars. This Suburban is a 1986 3/4 Ton. I paid $2,500 delivered. My friend Brian Calson from Green, Ohio painted it Colbalt Blue and White Pearl with fender skirts. The next one was from Lordstown that I got from an Estate Sale on Sept 2011. A 1981 3/4 Ton with a 454 V8. 26000 Miles. I paid $2,700. Brian painted it Sunset Bronze with white and fender skirts. My friend Charlie found me another one in Indianapolis, Indiana in January 2013. I bought it delivered for $1,650 with his load. 1987 1/2 Ton. I had it painted Forest Green and Mint Green with Fender Skirts. I still have all three. I had a 1985 for 13 years. I have won a lot of trophies with the Suburbans. I collect Dash Plaques every year. Anywhere from 100 and up!

John’s T-Bucket North Royalton, OH I haven’t changed the car since 1972 and drive it currently to local cruise nights. I first started building the T-Bucket in 1964 and completed it in 1966. Upon completion I was able to drive it a short time before going into the Army in August. I entered the car into the 1970 Cleveland Autorama and won 2nd place. The car was also part of the 1972 show in which I disassembled and reassembled the car during the three day show.

Mobile Blasting Service 1934 Ford Cabriolet that is all Henry Ford steel. The louvered hood is a steel aftermarket. The original body was taken off the frame and put on a Lincoln Mfg. frame with mustang 2 front end. Tubular upper A arms. All original body parts but hood. I have the original gas tank cover with bumper holes and spare tire holes in it. I also have the original re-chromed rear bumper and bracket. Bored .30 over 350 chevy and a 350 transmission and an 8” ford rear end with leaf spring rear end. Power steering, power brakes with front disc, heat and air conditioning, tilt wheel, cruise control, power windows, digital dash, stereo and suicide doors with locking latches. The car has dual electric fans, 1 is thermostatically controlled the other is switch operated for use when using the a/c. Car does not run hot on the hottest days. Top and interior are very nice. Has parade boot, and rumble seat. I put the rubber on the running boards, brand new wheels, new 9” stainless head lights and put the original rechromed front bumper back on it. This is a car that you can drive from coast to cast with no worries. I was told it won a trophy at good guys in 2005. Titled as a 1934 Ford cabriolet. Call to discuss.
