T
he Rooster Rally Car Show, with proceeds benefiting the Mahoning County Jr Fair Building, was held at the County Fairgrounds in Canfield, Ohio. Space certainly was no problem at this location. Wellmanicured grounds with paved roads crisscrossing the facility make this space a show promoter’s dream. Cars, trucks, bikes, tractors and even a monster truck pulled in for this event. There was a Burn-out Pit setup for smoke out challenges and displays of raw horsepower. A craft show was also going on in one of the fairground buildings. Food vendors were on hand to satisfy the hunger and thirst of attendees. DJ “Big Rick” was filling the air with oldies tunes.

ack in 2012, Jude and I had a chance to spend a few of months (during the Winter) in Phoenix, Arizona! This was our first chance to enjoy the pleasure of a winter away from the cold and gray of our Northern Ohio habitat! Jude was working while we were there, so I had some extra free time to check out the area for some car cruise action! As you can imagine, that wasn’t such a difficult job for yours truly! Back then, Winter was similar to Winter in Florida... perfect! A majority of the time we were there, the weather was a constant daily routine of 70 to 80 degree days and slightly less in the evenings! Perfect in our eyes! With my time off, I managed to scope out some amazing car shows in the suburbs surrounding Phoenix area and found that one was a short distance away in neighboring Scottsdale at the the luxurious “Scottsdale Pavilions” shopping area! Surf Fink Hangs Ten on Dead Man’s Curve Beach Photos and story by John McCartney Model Tara Murphy
W
hen it comes to one of a kind unique creations in the world of customs many stand out as well lasting the test of time. Many great customizers have let their minds run wild and have done just that back in the sixties. Back then folks could not wait to see what crazy cool customs would come out and make the rounds on the custom car show circuit. One of those famed builders was none other than Ed “Big Daddy” Roth who over his vast career produced and turned out what many people look at iconic pieces of art. While many of his creations are know world wide there is one that might just stand out a little more when it comes to its place in history and that of course is the iconic Rat Fink. Even today you cannot go to a hot rod show, drag race or swap meet without seeing that crazy cool Rat Fink show up in all shapes and styles. So one can only wonder if Ed “Big Daddy” Roth was still around today what he would think about the latest creation which came from the very creative minds of Dead Man’s Curve Car Club members Mark Glaz and Mario Colasuonno. Both of these two put their heads together and came up with an idea to do a tribute to Ed “Big Daddy” Roth. Being members of the Dead Man’s Curve Car Club everyone in the club always had a love for Big Daddy Roth and the famous Rat Fink. Out of this love and enjoyment of all the work that Roth produced over they years that both Glaz and Colasuonno came up with the idea of putting the very famous Rat Rink on a full size motorized surf board. From this simple idea the project which would later be called and know as Surf Fink came to life. Okay so how does one start to put this unique creation together and built so it can be seen out in the public. First thing that two of them needed to find was a life size Rat Rink which could be mounted on a full size surf board. Life size surf boards can be found very easy full size Rat Fink’s not so much. However we live in the twenty century where anything can be created in a matter of time. So Glaz and Colasuonno reached out to David Lynshue of Capture in 3D to scan a Rat Fink that they had laying around, which was then superimposed and fit onto a surfboard which fellow Dead Man’s Curve club member Johnny Belair was kind enough to donate to the project. After this step was completed they contacted John Arzayus of Voxel Magic to 3D print a 3.5 foot tall Rat Fink. As the Rat Fink was being completed Glaz and Colasuonno started to working on building the frame which was made out of 1/2 inch by 1.5 inch flat steel. Much like would have done by Ed “Big Daddy” Roth back in the day the two hand formed the steel frame. Once that was done they fabricated the front axle using golf cart hubs and wheels. A 1953 Pontiac rear axle housing was selected by both of them to be made into the rear end. Colasuonno had two Ansen Sprint mags with tires on hand to finish the rolling chassis. After all this work was done the frame was glued and bolted to the surf board. To power the Surf Fink they both decided to use a Chevy big block engine with a 6-71 blower. The motor featured 3 Holly 94 deuces carburetors, which were rebuilt and fine tuned by Steve of Steve’s Carburetor located in Lyndhurst, New Jersey which does a very nice job to power the Surf Fink. A pair of chrome Zoomie headers were created by Glaz and Colasuonno by using 1.75 pipe. They were able to located a1950 bronze propeller which was mounted under the board to give it a little extra help with pushing the wind.

Once the Rat Fink was completed, the two of them got to work on fitting it to the board and where it was reinforced with steel rods. It was decided that Rat Fink needed a shifter, so by using 1/2 inch aluminum solid rod which was hand formed the shifter and the linkage and a classic eight ball shifter handle was used to complete the look. In order to get the fuel to the motor a classic Moon tank was mounted on the back of the surf board. After all the mock up was completed the whole project was disassembled. Once everything was disassembled everything that would require chrome was sent to Super Chrome in Asbury Park, New Jersey. For the paint work on both Rat Fink and the surf board those were sent to another fellow Dead Man’s Curve club member John Sbrigato of Brighton Collision in Brooklyn, New York. Sbrigato did all the body work and applied the base green and red paint. Once this was complete they needed to decide on the color for the surf board itself. They decided to go with a special blend of aqua, candy, with heavy flake and white inserts to give it that surf board theme look. Once again Sbrigato applied all the paint to the project. With all the paint complete at Brighton Collision, the board and the rat were assembled. The finished project came together and when done measured 9 1/2 feet long and 5 feet tall. Up next world famous pinstripe legend Julian Braet better known to all as Mr J who brought the whole project to life. Mr J went to town doing extensive airbrushing and hand pin stripping the entire rat and board. To give it that little extra tribute to Roth, “Big Daddy Ed Roth rides again” was done by Mr J in gold leaf. The entire project was completed in just about six month, which is a great feat and impressive to complete this one of a kind creation. While the Surf Fink has not been seen out in public just yet it has already gathered the attention of some very famous folks in the car show world. Those being noted car show producer Bob Larivee Sr, as well as Chuck Miller of Zinger’s fame both signed the blower belt. In the plans this year there is hope to show the Surf Fink off to the surviving members of Ed “Big Daddy” Roth’s family. Fans can always look forward to seeing the Surf Fink at many of the Dead Man’s Curve Car Club shows which they put on during the year. So of them include Wild Hot Rod Weekend in Mahwah, New Jersey as well as there show at the Showboat Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. ~John

Evan’s 1968 Ford Mustang Coupe Berea, OH. My love for Mustangs began when I was about 9 or 10 years old and I went to my first AutoRama with my brother (Jay), it continued into junior high and high school and the whole time my buddy Tommy and I use to go round and round because he was a Camaro guy (he has since done the smart thing and bought a 65 Mustang), then into my 20’s I finally got my first Mustang, a 1967 Mustang Coupe and rebuilt it over a 3 year period, then I sold the 67 and bought a 1965 Coupe and it took almost 3 years to rebuild, then I sold her, then at 28 years old I bought a 2003 Mustang and did a ton of Mods to her, owned her for 12 years and sold her to buy my current car, my 1968 Coupe. I realized that I had a great starting platform for a great rebuild and within the last 3 years that I owned my 1968 coupe I have done tons of work for a full restore. We started off with both quarter panel skins (ones that didn’t have the indented reflectors), new wheel houses, and trunk drop. Then we moved on to replacing the floor, torque boxes, deck lid, tail light panel and rear bumper. The hood was also replaced and we went with no latch and added hood pins. We removed and patched the side marker lights in the front fenders, removed the chrome rocker panel molding, and painted her Dark Highland Green Metallic. The front and rear have been lowered, the front has the Shelby drop with Viking mono tube coil overs and SSBC power disc brake conversion kit, the Rear has 2” lowering springs with ½” wedges on Koni shocks. The Powertrain Mods as of now are a completely rebuilt Ford Performance 302, SVO aluminum heads with Edelbrock air gap intake and Carb, MSD ignition system, Carter electric fuel system, Aluminum radiator and electric fan, Powermaster Starter and Alternator with billit power steering and alternator brackets, Douglas headers with Pypes stainless steel exhaust, backed with Ford AOD trans and Hughes 2500 stall converter and an 8” posi traction rear end with 3:55 gears.
