Randomly Speaking Road Rage..
A
few issues ago, we wrote about the left lane thing, ya know, all the slow people now get in the left lane and in order to successfully pass a car, so now you are forced to do the right lane thing. The by product of all that lane switching is road rage. It’s the only way for some people to voice their opinion of another persons poor driving skills. Also known as driver impaired, also known as idiots. Don’t get me wrong, I have participated in a few forms of road rage myself. And, I’m equally sure you have too. But with that said, here’s a couple of tricks. Whenever I see someone barreling up behind me, obviously going well over 90 mph, I usually do one of two things. First I wait until they get right on my bumper and I manually flip my headlights on, which to them, means I’ve stepped on the brake. You usually know if you’re successful or not, when you see their end drastically dip. That, of course is aggrivating, and according to recent traffic studies, is what escalates road rage. I look at it as “He drew first blood.”
magazines and covering events. Of the total number, 30 miles are usually in bumper-to-bumper traffic. Most of the bumperto-bumper traffic is on an 4 lane Interstate freeway. If you just look at the 3 lanes surrounding you (remember it’s bumper to bumper), there’s one car every 40 feet (divided by 5,280 feet in a mile) it works out to be 132 cars, times 32 miles. This works out to be 4,224 vehicles headed (unhappily) into the city at the same time. Even though the rest of the 34 miles is not bumper to bumper, I figure I pass at least another 400 cars. That brings the number to something like 4,624 unhappy drivers, all headed in the same direction. Statistically, roughly half of these vehicles (2,312) are driven by females. In any given group of females, roughly 1 in 28 are in the worst day of their menstrual cycle (2,312 divided by 28 = 82.57). According to Cosmopolitan magazine, 70% of all women describe their love life as dissatisfying or unrewarding. According to the National Institutes of Health, 22% of all females have seriously considered suicide or homicide and 34% describe men as their biggest problem.
Another trick is “boxing”, where I move my car into another lane just a bit behind a car in front of me. Then when Mr. Impatient, who’s been approaching at a high rate of speed, switches lanes, I move up just a tad, so he can’t get by. But never, I mean never, have I ever used the proverbial finger. Let me explain. One day while we were heading into the city for a meeting, I observed a female driver cut right in front of a pickup truck, (ahead of me), causing him to drive onto the shoulder. He stuck his hand out his window and flipped the woman off. “Man, is that guy stupid,” I thought to myself. I ALWAYS smile nicely and wave in a sheepish manner whenever a female does anything to me in traffic. Why? For very good reasons.
Finally, according to the National Rifle Association, 6% of all females carry weapons, and this number is increasing. That means that EVERY SINGLE DAY, I quite possibly drive past at least one female that has a lousy love life, thinks men are her biggest problem; has seriously considered suicide or homicide, is having the worst day of her period and is ARMED. No matter what she does in traffic, I wouldn’t DREAM of flipping her off! ...course that’s just me randomly speaking. ~ John Shapiro (1948 - 2016)

Cleveland’s IX Center hosted the 2018 Piston Power Show and over 50,000 came through the doors to check out the show. Considering that the 2011 show attendance was around 17,000, this indicates the show has attractions that people want to see.

Vehicles of many descriptions from around the country and Canada competed for awards. Show cars from the ISCA circuit were in the forefront of the display area. The popular Hot Rod Asylum was moved from the South Hall to the main exhibition area this year and presented some very unique customized guitars to their class winners. Cruisin’ Times Magazine was again a main focus with the “2018 John Shapiro Cruisin’ Times All Stars” stationed along a main aisle. These vehicles are hand-picked throughout the summer show/ cruise season and never fail to disappoint. Custom jackets were presented to the owners.

The Cleveland Soap Box Derby had an exhibition in the South Hall and the motorcycle display was absolutely amazing. Wags 4 Warriors had a very informative and welcoming display. The Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Engine Challenge held a qualifying event. Model cars, automotive design displays and a swap meet area were also popular attractions. Summit Racing Equipment had an elaborate performance display and also sponsored the Pedal Car Challenge for area students. Krazy Paint pinstripe artists had a center stage location where they created artwork to be auctioned off for charity. The Miss I-X Piston Powered Cleveland Auto-Rama Pin-Up Contest, once again, attracted a lot of attention. I would certainly be remiss in not mentioning the Boeing KC-97G which was recently added to the I-X Center floor. Plans call for this plane to be converted into a restaurant and lounge area.

Krazy Paint 2018 By John Carollo Photos by Kathie Goetsch Krazy Paint did it again. With the help of Piston Power Auto-Rama spectators, the amount raised at Ohio’s biggest Charity Panel Jam went almost $10,000 over last year. In total, a record amount of over $45,000 was raised for Cleveland’s Career and Technical School Foundation. The money went to kids and students attending trade schools, helping with grants, supplies and scholarships. Over 70 automotive artists and pinstripers painted well over 500 pieces, covering everything from toilet seats to musical instruments to fine art. Artists came from as far away as Idaho, Canada, Florida and the East Coast to contribute their talent to raise money for helping kids. In keeping with Krazy Paint’s motto of “Live, Laugh and Learn,” the event is geared towards the artists. Seminars by the some of the legends in the business help everyone learn. A steady stream of gifts and awards for the artists thanks them for their work. The fun environment keeps them happy.

In only five years at the IX Piston Powered Auto-Rama, Krazy Paint has now moved into the number two position for Midwest Charity Panel Jams. Krazy Paint is known for being the place to buy highly collectible Kustom Kulture art. Art pieces are sold at auctions and at the ‘Buy It Now’ tables of the booth, next to the main stage. Spectators can bring items in for custom work and help kids, too. Look for them next year under the big Krazy Paint banner!

s time goes on, those of us who have been around hot rodding for a while begin to realize that no matter what we do, nothing is as certain as change! You can complain and look at any change as a bad thing (by avoiding that change and go along in life as you have and be happy with that). Or, you can embrace those differences presented and see where that change is as it’s been in the past. The only change, really, is that many of the participants are younger now (where you were years ago) and you’re on the “teachng” end of that continuum now! Hmmmm. Maybe I’m getting a bit too deep, but with that thought in mind, Eric Hammonds, host of the Maplegrove Alliance Church Cool Car Show in Willougbhy Hills, is showing everyone that there is a bridge between old and new. He’s been sponsoring his “melding” car shows for a few years now and I’ve seen a promising growth in the participation of both sides. I’ve heard the arguements on both sides for a long time and I realize that there will be many who will never agree, but we have to face facts... change is something that will happen and nothing we do will change that! Sam Post’s Lil’ Deuce Coupe Claysville, PA. Here is a photo of our Lil’ Duece Coupe and my wife of 59 and 3/4 years who has passed on September 8, 2015. Our wedding anniversary would have been 60 years on January 1st, 2016. I’m still going to a lot of car shows in the Tri-State Area. I bought my Duece in ‘52 after graduating from Claysville High School. I drove it to work for over 25 years and then I restored it myself in ‘78-80. I had it taken completely apart and all paint removed and painted again in 2016. The picture of my wife shows her holding one of many awards that we won since the 80s. I went to the Big Cambridge show 3 years ago. A young 84 years old!

David’s’96 Corvette Norton, Ohio. This is a 1996 Corvette. We are the 2nd owners. I found it in Dayton, Oh in July 2016 with only 11,800 miles on it. The stripes are painted, not decals. I picked out the colors to match the interior. Next year (2019) the entire car will be taken apart, with the suspension, engine, trans and rear diff rebuilt, changed and/or modified to bring it up to more modern standards, both in power and handling. I have been doing a lot of careful Craigslist and forum buying to be able to build on a budget in the true spirit of hot rodding.

Paying Attention to Detail
W
hether you have a show car or you are cleaning your daily driver, paying attention to the details is what set’s your vehicle apart from the next persons. If you are going to clean the windows, make sure to roll them down a few inches first to clean the part that rolls up into the door frame. Make sure that if you are dressing the tires that you move your vehicle up a few feet to make sure dressing gets on the part of the tire that was touching the ground. And if you are cleaning the dash board area, make sure wipe out the cup holders, steering and gear shifter area and air vents. There are so many nooks and crannies on the inside and outside of your vehicle that paying attention to where the dust settles could mean getting a trophy or not, getting more money for a vehicle when you sell it or even just plain old respect. Here are some helpful hints that will make your cleaning job look the best it can and as easy as possible too.
If there is dirt behind the steering wheel, take a cloth and shimmy it back and forth behind it. If there is a lever to lift it up and down, make sure you do so, in order to get it as clean as possible. If you degrease your engine: After you degrease your engine, mix an “Armor All” type milky dressing 50/50 with water and spray it on for a matte (Low-gloss) finish. This same mixture can be used to make your tires and trim look clean without that super shiny look that solvent based tire dressing will give you. Make sure to open up coin holders, the glove box and arm rests and clean them out as best as possible. This is where Q-tips, vent and dash brushes as well as air compressors come in handy. If you cannot reach the dirt and debris, blowing air into those hard to reach areas is the best tool you can have. These are just some of the problem areas of your vehicle along with fast and easy ways to clean them.
Pet hair can easily be removed by wearing a latex glove and literally Happy Detailing! combing the carpeting with your hand. This will sweep the hair into the area that your hand is moving, making it easier ~ David to clean and vacuum. You can use your fingers to get into hard to reach areas, for example, the sides of the seats.
