Un message du président de la CSUQ

L’Honorable Jacques Saada

Mesdames et Messieurs, Je me plais souvent à répéter que la générosité n’est pas que parole. Elle est un geste, une multitude de gestes qui s’accomplissent dans le dévouement et la discrétion, avec le cœur et avec la tête, dans l’anticipation du sourire de l’autre. Les organisateurs de la Mission Bar Mitzvot sont une illustration vivante de cette générosité. Jour après jour, année après année, sans compter leurs heures, au prix d’efforts sans faille que la neige et le froid ne sauraient arrêter, ils montent un projet dont le seul but est de rendre heureux, dans la dignité. Arie est sur le point de passer à l’âge adulte, une majorité religieuse qui se sanctionne par la Bar Mitzvah, moment qui marque la vie juive depuis des millénaires. Dans le fond de son âme, il attend fiévreusement ce grand jour. Il rêve. À de nouveaux vêtements, au talith qu’il porterait, aux téfilines qu’il mettrait. Un jour, il y a longtemps, il était au Mur des Lamentations. Des enfants fêtaient leur Bar Mitzvah sur l’esplanade inondée de soleil. N’osant se révéler à lui-même qu’il était jaloux d’eux, lui, c’est à sa petite synagogue de ce quartier de Beer Sheva qu’il deviendrait adulte. C’était sans compter sur David et Ninette et toute leur petite équipe qui, à des milliers de kilomètres, en avaient décidé autrement. Ils se mobilisaient, passaient des soirées à se répartir le travail et des journées à le faire, à organiser, à mobiliser. Leur seule motivation : le visage radieux d’Arie le jour de sa Bar Mitzvah sur cette même esplanade lumineuse, sous l’œil embué de larmes de fierté de sa maman, sous la main protectrice de son papa posée sur sa tête, dans un geste des millions de fois répété depuis des millénaires. Une journée qui marquera sa vie à tout jamais, en lui rappelant que le bonheur existe. Voilà pourquoi, au nom de la Communauté sépharade unifiée du Québec, je tiens à dire toute mon admiration à David, à Ninette et à toute leur équipe. Par votre dévouement, c’est effectivement le bonheur que vous distribuez.

A word from the president of the CSUQ

Ladies and Gentlemen, I like to say time and again that generosity is not only a word. It is an action, indeed a multitude of actions, taken wholeheartedly without fanfare, and for which the only reward hoped for is a simple smile. The Mission Bar Mitzvot organizers epitomize generosity. Day in day out, displaying an unwavering determination, as a team, they work toward a single goal which is to distribute happiness in a spirit of dignity. Arie is about to reach religious adulthood. Following in the footsteps of generations, he is preparing for his bar mitzvah, a ceremony which has marked Jewish life for millenia. His heart is beating in the expectation of the big moment. He thinks of his new clothes, the taleth and the tefillin which will make him feel so proud. One day, long ago, he visited the Wailing Wall. He saw children his age celebrating their passage into adulthood among family and friends on the Esplanade shining under the October sun. Arie feels a bit guilty to envy them. He knows he will not celebrate these essential moments in Jerusalem, but in his small Beer Sheva Synagogue, just big enough to host his family and friends. What he couldn’t know is that David and Ninette and their wonderful team of volunteers had decided otherwise. Perfect strangers living thousands of kilometers away, undeterred by snow and cold overtaking Montreal, sharing the load to organize, raise funds, mobilize and make things possible. One objective: to anticipate Arie’s radiant face when he celebrates his Bar Mitzvah on the same Esplanade shining under the same October sun, surrounded by his mother in tears of emotion and pride, his father’s protective hand on his head, like so many fathers have done with their sons for centuries and centuries. That day will mark Arie’s life forever, as a constant reminder that happiness does exist. That is why, on behalf of the Communauté sépharade unifiée du Québec, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to David, Ninette and the entire team. With your dedication, you are indeed generating happiness.

Je suis très fier de mon engagement constant envers la Mission des Bar-Mitzvot dédiée aux enfants défavorisés d’Israël. Cette expérience m’apporte à chaque fois énormément de bonheur en participant à cette mission et me comble de joie. Participer à cette mission est un privilège (un Zehout), je remercie tous mes amis, le comité de la Mission et les bénévoles pour leur soutien. Un grand merci au président de la CSUQ, l’Honorable Jacques Saada pour ses encouragements, Benjamin Bitton, Sabine Malka, Elodie Perez, Marcel Elbaz et Ninette Rosen pour leur efficacité et leur dévouement. Également, je tiens à remercier tout particulièrement ma chère épouse Silvia qui se tient toujours à mes côtés pour cette noble cause. Votre engagement constant envers ce projet est remarquable, je ne pourrais suffisamment vous remercier pour votre grande générosité. Sachez que cette mission a une valeur inestimable et qu’en offrant une BarMitzvat vous recevrez beaucoup plus. Vous ne pouvez imaginer l’impact que votre donation fait sur la vie de ces enfants, de ces familles, des rabbins et des communautés locales en Israël. Venez vivre cette expérience qui non seulement vous fera découvrir des lieux uniques, mais également vous réchauffera le cœur en faisant une belle Mitzvah. A word from Bar-Mitzvot Mission chair Distinguished guests, I am proud of our commitment to the Bar Mitzvot mission project for the disadvantaged children of Israel. My experience is always one of joy and happiness when I participate in these missions. The unforgettable enjoyment it brings to the children and their families only strengthens my commitment to the cause. Being able to partake in these missions has been a privilege (a zechut) for me and I would like to thank all my friends, the mission committee and the volunteers for their constant support. A very big thank you to the president of the CSUQ, the Honorable Jacques Saada for his constant encouragement, Benjamin Bitton, Sabine Malka, Elodie Perez, Marcel Elbaz and Ninette Rosen for their efficacy and devotion to this mission. I would also like to thank my very dear wife, Silvia, who has always stood by my side and supported this important cause. Your continuous dedication towards this project is remarkable and I cannot thank you enough for your extreme generosity. Just know that this mission provides an invaluable opportunity to these children and by offering them a Bar Mitzvah, we all receive a lot more than we are giving. You cannot imagine the impact that your donation has on the lives of these children, their families, the Rabbis and the local communities in Israel. Un message de la vice-Présidente de la Mission Bar Mitzvot

Notre projet Bar-mitzvot est dans sa 18e année, notre équipe de volontaires dévoués effectue un travail admirable qui consiste à ramasser les fonds nécessaires pour notre mission. Celle-ci consiste à aider plus d’une cinquantaine de jeunes de milieux défavorisés et autres à accomplir cette importante étape religieuse dans la vie de ces jeunes garçons juifs. Nous comptons sur la générosité de nos donateurs fidèles qui inlassablement soutiennent notre organisme chaque année. La récompense pour nous bénévoles est d’assister à cette merveilleuse fête à Jérusalem qui réunit les jeunes gens avec leur familles ou amis, mettre les Tefillins et réciter les prières de circonstance. Nous organisons aussi un beau repas avec musique et cadeaux pour tous. Les émotions sont vives. Ces jeunes vêtus de costumes neufs sont fiers et reconnaissants d’avoir accompli cette transition religieuse à l’âge sérieux. Rires et larmes sont sur tous les visages. J’ai eu le privilège d’avoir assisté à plusieurs de ces missions Bar-Mitzvot de Beer Sheva. J’en reviens chaque fois heureuse d’avoir participé et contribue un peu au bonheur de tous ces jeunes. Je souhaite que notre équipe impliquée et dynamique continue cette belle mitzvah pour de nombreuses années à venir. Un grand merci à nos dirigeants qui s’assurent du succès continu d’année en année sans relâche.

A word form the co-chair of the Bar Mitzvot Mission Our Bar-mitzvot project is in its 18th year, with a team of dedicated volunteers doing an admirable job of raising the funds for this mission. We help annually more than 50 young boys from disadvantaged communities to attain this important religious step in their lives. We rely on the generosity of our loyal donors who tirelessly support our organization each year. The reward for us, as volunteers, is to attend this wonderful celebration in Jerusalem that unites these young boys together with their families and friends to put on the Tefillin and recite the prayers. We also organize a beautiful meal with music and gifts for all. The emotions are intense. These young boys, dressed in their new suits, are proud and grateful to have accomplished this religious transformation into adulthood. Laughter and tears can be seen on almost every face. I have had the privilege of attending many of these Bar-Mitzvot missions in Beer Sheva. I come back every time happy to have participated but also to have contributed to the happiness that can be seen and felt by all of these children. My wish is that our committed and dynamic team continues this beautiful mitzvah for many years to come. A big thank you to the tireless leaders who ensure continued success year after year.

Cette continuité est uniquement possible car nous y croyons fermement et avec beaucoup de force car le résultat est vibrant et bien réel. Your financial support is and has always been remarkable and unwavering. Through both your presence and your contributions, we can offer, for the 18th year in a row, the disadvantaged children from Beer-Sheva the chance to celebrate their Bar Mitzvah, an important Jewish milestone, in the holiest place in the world, the Kotel in Jerusalem. This continuity has been made possible because we all firmly believe in the mission and the result is not only vibrant but also very real. Toda Raba for your generosity. Coprésidents d’honneur de la soirée Chers amis et amies, Co-présider un événement aussi important que le Gala annuel consacrant la « Mission Bar Mitzvot en Israël » représente pour nous un privilège indéniable ainsi qu’un immense honneur. Initié par la Communauté Sépharade Unifiée du Québec, ce projet s’inscrit dans le droit fil de PASI, le Projet d’action sociale en Israël conçu et mené d’une main de maître, pendant de longues années, par notre regretté James Dahan Z’L où des enfants de condition très modeste se voyaient offrir une merveilleuse et inoubliable journée lors de leur Bar Mitzva grâce à la générosité de nos donateurs et à l’action méritante de nos bénévoles sur le terrain. Quand nous pensons que depuis sa mise en marche, il y a 18 ans, près de 700 enfants ont pu vivre la magie de la pose des téfilines dans ce haut lieu de notre histoire qu’est le Kotel, notre communauté peut se sentir fière à juste titre. Tout projet, quel qu’il soit, part d’un rêve et nous sommes fiers et heureux de compter de grands rêveurs parmi les membres de notre communauté. Ces hommes et ces femmes qui s’investissent à l’année longue pour justement concrétiser leurs rêves en les faisant passer d’hier à aujourd’hui et d’aujourd’hui à demain, méritent toute notre affection et surtout tout notre respect. Ils et elles appartiennent à cette catégorie d’êtres humains pour qui la seule chose au monde qui vaille la peine d’être vécue, est d’apporter un peu de bonheur aux autres.

A word from Honorary chair of the evening Dear friends, Co-chairing such an important event as the annual “Mission Bar Mitzvot in Israel” Gala is an undeniable privilege and a huge honor. Initiated by the Communauté Sépharade Unifiée du Québec, this project is in line with PASI, the Projet d’action sociale en Israël, which was designed and led by a master mind for many years, our late James Dahan Z’L. This project offers very modest children a wonderful and unforgettable day for their Bar Mitzvah thanks to the generosity of our donors and the deserving action of our volunteers on the ground. When we think that since its inception 18 years ago, nearly 700 children have been able to live the magic that is putting on their tefillin in the holiest place of our history, the Kotel; our community can feel righteously proud. All projects start with a dream and we are not only happy but also extremely proud to have such grand dreamers among the members of our community. These men and women invest year-round to realize these dreams by continuously making them a reality from yesterday to today and today to tomorrow. They deserve all of our affection but most particularly all of our respect. They belong to this category of human beings, for whom the only thing worth living in the world is to bring happiness to others. Congratulations to these dreamers and a big thank you to all of you. Without your dedication, these dreams would never have become reality.

Septembre 1983, un groupe de jeunes adultes, dirigé par James Dahan Z’L, Directeur du Centre communautaire Juif, décide de se lancer dans le Projet de P.A.S.I. (Projet d’Action Sociale en Israël). Ces jeunes adultes engagés et attachées aux populations du Neguev organisent des activités récréatives, culturelles et sportives, et c’est là que la première mission de solidarité a vu le jour.

Agir comme incubateur d’idées de projets communautaires dans un environnement de solidarité à l’égard d’Israël.

Mission

Depuis 18 ans, un groupe de bénévoles organise, grâce à des dons des Bar-Mitzvot pour des enfants orphelins ou issus de familles défavoriées qui ne peuvent réaliser cette importantes Mitzvah.

History

September 1983, a group of young adults under the name PASI and under the direction of James Dahan Z’L (director of the Jewish Community Center) decides to embark on a social action project. Their mission was to produce recreational, sports and cultural activities by young adults committed to this mission and created for the Negev population creating the first solidarity mission of the CSUQ.

Vision

To act as a creator of ideas for community projects in an environment of solidarity with Israel.

Mission

For the last 18 years, groups of volunteers, thanks to donations, have organized Bar Mitzvot for orphaned children or children from disadvantaged families who cannot afford to do this important Mitzvah.

Lancement officiel du projet Bar-Mitzvot pour les enfants de Montréal La Mission de solidarité Bar-Mitzvot, est une initiative lancée par la Communauté Sépharade Unifiée du Québec, il y a 18 ans pour venir en aide aux habitants de Beer-Sheva (ville jumelée de Montréal). Depuis ses débuts, cette mission de solidarité a non seulement apporté un nouvel espoir à la ville grâce au bénévolat, mais a aussi contribué à la célébration des bar-mitzvot pour des enfants venant de milieux défavorisés. A ce jour, les fonds amassés ont permis d’offrir à plus de 700 enfants la possibilité de célébrer cette belle mitzvah. Dès l’année 2020 à Montréal, une nouvelle initiative sera lancée parallèlement au projet Mission Bar-Mitvot Israël. En effet, en collaboration avec les rabbins, les congrégations et les institutions communautaires de Montréal, la CSUQ organisera les bar Mitzvot pour des enfants issus de familles défavorisés. Comme la plupart de ces enfants ne fréquentent pas nécessairement les écoles juives, ce fonds offrira la célébration des Bar-Mitzvot ainsi que toute la préparation reliée à cet événement. De plus, comme pour les enfants en Israël, les dons amassés permettront d’offrir à ces enfants une paire de téfilines, un talith, un sidour (livre de prière) et un costume. Il est de la responsabilité de notre communauté de ne pas oublier ces enfants et de leur donner l’occasion d’apprendre davantage sur leur identité juive. Cette étape, dans la vie d’un juif, est indispensable et c’est pour cette raison qu’il est du devoir de la communauté de leur donner une chance de vivre cette célébration importante qui aura un impact sur leur vie d’adulte. Au nom des enfants et de leurs familles, nous vous remercions de votre soutien et de votre générosité.

Official launch of the Bar-Mitzvot project for children in Montreal The Bar-Mitzvot Solidarity Mission, is an initiative that was started by the Communauté Sépharade Unifiée du Québec 18 years ago to help the people of Beer-Sheva (Montreal’s sister city in Israel). Since its inauguration, this solidarity mission has not only brought a newfound hope to the city but has also given its children a renewed faith. Each year the CSUQ funds a Bar-Mitzvot project to benefit over 50 children and, to date, has helped close to 700 children prepare for and celebrate their Bar-Mitzvot. A new venture is in preparation and set to launch next year in 2020. This new venture, a Bar-Mitvot project in Montreal, will be in parallel to the Bar-Mitvot project benefiting the children in Israel. Working in conjunction with local Rabbis, Congregations and Community Institutions across Montreal, the CSUQ’s goal is to access children from foster-case and underprivileged families and environments to provide them with the Bar-Mitzvah experience. As most of these youth are not necessarily attending Jewish day schools, this fund will not only offer the Bar-Mitvot experience but will also include all of the preparation to learn how to read and say the prayers. This fund will allow us to offer these children a pair of Tefilin, Talith, Sidour (prayer book) and a suit. It is our community’s responsibility to invest in these children and allow them the opportunity to learn about their Jewish identity. We cannot allow these children to miss this important milestone and as a community, we owe to these children to give them a chance to experience this momentous occasion that can have a huge impact on their lives. TÉMOIGNAGES DES ENFANTS TESTIMONIES FROM THE CHILDREN Un message d’Avner Depuis le divorce de mes parents, j’habite seul avec ma mère chez mes grands-parents dans le quartier modeste Daled à Beer Sheva. Ma famille vit essentiellement d’allocations familiales et notre situation économique est très instable. Je n’aurais pas pu célébrer ma Bar-Mitzvah et me procurer un ensemble de Talith et Téfilines sans le soutien du programme de Bar-Mitzvot de Montréal. Grâce au programme des Bar Mitzvot, j’ai eu la chance de suivre les cours de préparation à la Bar Mitzva et durant l’évènement de monter pour la première foi à la Torah. Ma mère était très touchée de cette expérience puisque c’était la première foi qu’elle visitait Jérusalem et le Kotel.

A message from Itai It was a great experience going to the “Machon” where the Rabbis and instructors took the time to explain to us the meaning of being Bar Mitzvah. That day in Jerusalem was exciting and moving. For me, a child from Beer Sheva, who grow up without a father., it was a big thing. The party at the event hall will always bring up good memories. I want to express my gratitude to the Sephardic community of Montreal for this project and for giving me the opportunity to fully experience this major milestone in my life. I won’t forget it for the rest of my life.

Un message de David Je suis un enfant d’une famille de huit qui vient d’arriver en Israël du Brésil. Nous demeurons présentement dans un centre d’intégration à Beer Sheva. Mes parents ont beaucoup de difficultés avec la langue et sont encore sans emploi. Ma famille a eu la chance de visiter Jérusalem et le Kotel pour la première fois lors de ma Bar-Mitzvah organisée grâce à la générosité de la communauté de Montréal et du programme des Bar-Mitzvot. Je continue de fréquenter le centre Orot Yisraël afin de poursuivre mon intégration. Merci Montréal.

A message from Noam’s Grandparents After his family went through a traumatic event, Noam was forced to move in with us so he would not have to move into an orphanage. He entered the Bar Mitzvah project with low self-esteem and no motivation. As the project went on, Noam developed a strong sense of belonging and ties to the staff, which lead to amazing results both for him and for all of us who surrounded him. We wish to express our warm regards for this amazing initiative. We had a great time and we are thankful. It was exciting and memorable. We hope that more children will have the opportunity to live this incredible experience.
