TERM CARD 2021

President's WELCOME

Dear members, I hope you are all keeping safe and well this term, whether you are studying in Cambridge or from home. It cannot be ignored that this has been a difficult time for many. I hope you have found ways to stay positive during lockdown and furthermore, I hope that CULS can help in this regard! A big priority for CULS this term is to care for the welfare of our members. Hence, we have packed this term with new initiatives! We are launching a Weekly Welfare Draw where members have the opportunity to win amazing gifts. You asked for more virtual socials and we have deliver(oo?)ed with weekly online dinners. We are also collaborating with the University and Mind UK to host a 'Minding your Mental Health at Work' Workshop. One of the benefits of lockdown is that we can explore ideas and opportunities we may not have previously had time to look at. With this in mind, our committee has been working hard to create a great term card of events. We have plenty of opportunities ahead to learn about a range of legal careers and explore the most prevalent legal issues arising from Covid. A massive thanks goes to one our creative officers, Eve Simpson, for designing this beautiful card!

Furthermore, we are excited to be celebrating the 120th Anniversary of CULS this year! Established in 1901, CULS is one of the oldest student societies in the UK. Within its 120 years it has been home to many of the world's leading legal figures from Supreme Court judges to esteemed academics to world renowned advocates (our Honorary President - Lady Hale - being one of them!)

We will be celebrating this exciting anniversary with a special edition of Per Incuriam and limited edition stash. We are also reserving additional funds for next year's committee to ensure that there will be plenty of gala dinners and a superb ball at the end of the year for current students and alumni alike to celebrate! Best Regards, Rebecca

Pro-Bono Projects Citizens Advice Citizens Advice provides free, confidential and impartial information and advice to assist people with the problems they face, including employment, debt, housing, immigration, family and consumer issues. They operate as a network of over 300 independent charities across the UK. They lead national research and campaigns to improve the policies and principles that affect people's lives. CULS will be facilitating student opportunities with the local Cambridge Citizens Advice, from face-to-face advice to remote email advice. We will be working with the research and campaigns teams to create opportunities for students to contribute to their research projects. CULS will also be hosting virtual events to learn more about Citizens Advice and to hear from Cambridge students that volunteer with their local office.

Access to Justice Access to justice is a human right, no matter who you are or how much money you have. Yet two thirds of the UK population don’t know how to get legal advice and there are still 14 million people who live in poverty and cannot afford it. Our raffle fundraising campaign seeks to raise funds to be used towards funding vital advice services which offer a lifeline to vulnerable people - children in poverty, the homeless, victims of domestic abuse, elderly housebound people and disabled people - who desperately need legal help, advice or representation to resolve their issues but cannot afford it. The money, therefore, makes a real difference in these people’s lives. Our raffle, tickets to which can be obtained by donating through our page (https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/Team/CULS), will be drawn on the 14th February. Our prizes are dinner with Lady Arden and dinner with Dr Stelios Tofaris. Tickets cost £5 each.

Pro-Bono Projects International Law Book Facility The International Law Book Facility (ILBF) is a key organisation in pursuing access to justice on the world stage. They provide legal books, donated by the UK legal community, to organisations who lack such resources for legal research. CULS will be collecting books from the Cambridge Law Faculty and from the college libraries to donate to this charity. CULS will be holding a book drive for students and staff to donate any second hand legal textbooks for donations in Easter term. Don’t go burning your books at the end of exams, donate them to the ILBF instead!

Amicus Amicus is a small charity that helps provide representation for those facing the death penalty in the United States. We believe the death penalty is disproportionally imposed on the most vulnerable in society, violating their right to due process and equal justice before the law. Our aims are to provide better access to justice and to raise awareness of potential abuses of defenders' rights. We are not a campaigning organisation. We believe we can make the greatest difference through frontline work. Students will get the opportunity to hear from professionals that have worked first hand with death row inmates and to get a real understanding of this urgent and current issue. Find out more detail about our work and programmes here http://www.amicus-alj.org/
