TERM CARD 2020

President's WELCOME Dear members, I hope you all have had a restful long vacation and are keeping safe and well during these unprecedented times. This is one of strangest and hardest periods the university has gone through. However, as a society, we are approaching the year ahead with optimism. As lectures go online, fostering a sense of community has become more important than ever. With this in mind, our committee has been working hard to create a packed term card of events. We have plenty of opportunities ahead to mingle with fellow law students, hear from world-class speakers and further your legal career. A massive thanks goes to one our creative officers, Eve Simpson, for designing this beautiful card! There are many CULS events I am excited about this year but I will go ahead and name a few that are, for me, particular highlights. Firstly, we have an amazing line up of visiting speakers. In November, we will be hosting Gina Miller. She brought two of the most constitutionally important cases in the last decade: Miller [2017] and Miller [2019]. Now she will be speaking to us about the importance of judicial review as a check on government power.

CULS is known for having one of the best social calendars in Cambridge and this term is no exception. Law firm dinners are continuing virtually using Deliveroo vouchers. Socials will also continue to take place in Cambridge's best (and most spacious) bars, with measures in place to abide by government guidelines. In December, we also plan to host a gala dinner for our alumni from the Class of 2020 who missed out on their last term. Our stash collection is also ready to launch on our website very soon! We are getting CULS puffer jackets, q-zips, joggers and more. Furthermore, our magazine, Per Incuriam, is collaborating with Colombia University; our Pro Bono department is arranging student work with the NGO Amicus; our Foreign Affairs team has been busy organising exchanges with Milan and Malta. And finally, our Non-Law, Careers and Mooting teams have packed the term with insight events, moots and opportunities. Keep track of all of these ventures on our brilliantly managed Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn pages. Also keep an eye out for our new digital venture which will be announced next week!

Best wishes, Rebecca CULS President 2020-21

Mooting

OUR MOOTS De Smith Moot The De Smith Moot is Sponsored by Blackstone Chambers. It is an individual moot. Participants must have had some prior mooting experience, and moot problems can be on any core area of law.

Brick Court Moot The Brick Court Moot is sponsored by Brick Court Chambers. It is a team moot (in pairs). There is no need for participants to have prior mooting experience, and no restrictions on how the team is formed. Moot problems can be on any core area of law.

Cuppers The Cuppers Moot is sponsored by Atkin Chambers. It is a team moot. There is no need for participants to have prior mooting experience, but teams must come from the same College. Moot problems can be on any core area of law.

Fledglings The Fledglings Moot is sponsored by Quadrant Chambers. It is an individual moot for beginners. Participants should not have had any prior mooting experience (for those with only College moot experience, we placed them on the waitlist). Moot problems should only be on first-year areas of law.

Speed Moots There are currently four speed moots. Speed moots usually span the course of a day, unlike other moots which span across a few weeks or months. The problem will be released only on the day of the moot and as such, require less time commitment.
