MICHAELMAS TERM CARD 2021

PRESIDENT'S WELCOME Dear members, Welcome back to Cambridge! I hope you have had a lovely summer and are excited for the new academic year. CULS has now underlined the experience of 120 years of Cambridge students. Today, we are more active than ever. We have continued to expand our departments and their reach; this term offers vast opportunities to connect with other students, consider careers, take a welfare break from work, engage with high-profile topics and speakers, take part in world class moots and pro bono, write for Per Incuriam, and so much more. I am particularly excited for our newly established Welfare Department’s calendar of events, notably our first ever Week 5 CULS Puppy Therapy! Our Socials department is additionally offering a brilliant range of events, from dinners, to networking socials, to our Law Ball Launch Social. Indeed, our 120th Anniversary Law Ball is set to be incredible. Be sure to save the date, revealed in the following pages! As we settle back into University life with lesser Covid restrictions, CULS will certainly deliver on the buzz surrounding our events. I hope to see many of you enjoying these in the coming term!

I also encourage you to take advantage of our new Membership Discounts scheme, entitling our members to discounts on a variety of restaurants, cafés and bars around Cambridge. You can keep updated with events and opportunities through our social media and mailing list. Finally, I would like to express gratitude to our dedicated CULS Committee, without whom this calendar would not be possible. Additionally, thank you to our current and new sponsors for their generous support of our society. We look forward to working with every one of you in the coming year. A thank you also goes to Richard Briggs for allowing me to use his beautiful artwork throughout this Term Card! I hope you all have a wonderful Michaelmas. Best wishes, Katie Adamson CULS President 2021-22

MOOTING

OUR MOOTS De Smith Moot The De Smith Moot is Sponsored by Blackstone Chambers. It is an individual moot. Participants must have had some prior mooting experience, and moot problems can be on any core area of law.

3 Verulam Buildings Moot The 3 Verulam Buildings is sponsored by the chambers. It is a team moot (in pairs). There is no need for participants to have prior mooting experience, and no restrictions on how the team is formed. Moot problems can be on any core area of law.

Cuppers The Cuppers Moot is sponsored by Atkin Chambers. It is a team moot. There is no need for participants to have prior mooting experience, but teams must come from the same College. Moot problems can be on any core area of law.

Fledglings The Fledglings Moot is sponsored by Quadrant Chambers. It is an individual moot for beginners. Participants should not have had any prior mooting experience (for those with only College moot experience, we placed them on the waitlist). Moot problems should only be on first-year areas of law.

Speed Moots Speed moots usually span the course of a day, unlike other moots which span across a few weeks or months. The problem will be released only on the day of the moot and as such, require less time commitment. They are a great opportunity to explore more niche areas of law such as Chancery and commercial work, as no prior research is required.
