CAREERS EVENTS

Case Study Session

WEDNESDAY 5TH FEBRUARY 2020 | 4-6PM |

WITH

ROOM 6, HISTORY FACULTY

Come and join Slaughter and May’s Case Study Session where firm representatives will guide you through how to approach, analyse and understand a case study. This event will be useful for anyone applying for a vacation scheme or training contract as the interview often involves a case study. It will also be helpful to anyone who wants to increase their commercial awareness - perhaps in order to excel on a first year scheme or vacation scheme. There will also be an opportunity to network with Slaughter and May representatives over drinks and nibbles after the session.

THURSDAY 5TH MARCH 2020

Commercial Awareness Presentation

| 4-6PM | ROOM 6, HISTORY FACULTY

WITH

Come and join Slaughter and May for their session on commercial awareness. Slaughter and May acts for more FTSE 100 companies than any other law firm, so you will be learning from leaders in this field. Commercial awareness is a crucial skill for all law firm (and commercial bar) applications. However, it is a somewhat elusive concept. This session will explain what commercial awareness is, how you can increase your awareness and how you can convey your commercial awareness in applications or vacation schemes. This event will be particularly useful for first year law students who want to gain an understanding of what commercial awareness is in preparation for first year schemes or vacation scheme applications next year. It will also be very helpful to second year law students who will be attending vacation schemes or applying for training contracts.

Alternative Careers in the Law

HUMAN RIGHTS AND PUBLIC INTEREST LEGAL TECH SPORTS LAW CONSULTANCY

The careers team have been working to curate a series of panel discussions, Q&As and networking sessions - all relating to an 'alternative career in the law'. This involves people who have studied law at university, or have trained to become a lawyer, but did not end up in a commercial law firm. This series seeks to challenge the idea that there is a particular place you need to be as a 'successful law student' (vacation scheme in second year with a training contract straight after graduation) and hopes to encourage more CULS members to explore all of their options before making a decision about their future. Keep an eye out on our Facebook page and mailing list for more information..

SPEAKERS SERIES

2nd March | 6-7pm | Faculty of Law

MENTAL HEALTH AND THE LAW RICHARD MARTIN Junior Barrister City Employment Lawyer and Author of the book ‘This too will pass - Anxiety in a Professional World’ (2018)

As many Law students apply and compete for vacation schemes and training contracts, concerns surrounding work-life balance and mental wellbeing in the City are ever pertinent. Richard Martin studied law at St Catharine’s College, Cambridge before specialising in employment law. He was a partner at Gouldens/Jones Day and then at Speechly Bircham where he sat on the management committee. In 2011, Richar suffered severe mental illness that left him hospitalised and in lengthy recovery. He is now a leading campaigner and advocate around mental health, within the legal profession and more broadly, in the UK and internationally. He provides extensive training, co-chairs the Lord Mayor’s This is Me campaign and runs the Mindful Business Charter. In 2018 he published a memoir of his illness and recovery - This too will pass - Anxiety in a Professional World. His talk will aim at providing practical strategies, based on his own experience in the legal world, so that students can know the right questions to ask of potential employers and ourselves to stay healthy.

21st January 2020 | 6-7pm | Faculty of Law

CONTRACT LAW DEBATE In defence of Foakes v Beer

This event is designed to enrich the contract law tripos module and is particularly aimed at allowing Part IB students to supplement their lecture information and further reading. Dr. Janet O’Sullivan, fellow and Director of Studies in law at Selwyn, will be arguing against Mr William Day in favour of maintaining one of the most controversial rules in contract today: the rule in Foakes v Beer on decreasing pacts. This promises to be a lively and informative event, and might just come in handy when it comes to end of year exams!

TBC | Faculty of Law

MILLER NO. 2

LORD PANNICK QC Cross bench peer, QC who argued on behalf of Gina Miller in R (Gina Miller) v Prime Minister (Miller No. 2)

Lord Pannick QC, who appeared on behalf of the applicants in Miller No. 2 will be sharing his insight into preparations to challenge the Government on their decision to prorogue Parliament. It promises to be an informative and interesting evening.
