Michaelmas
Termcard
President’s Welcome Dear Members, Welcome back to Cambridge! I hope you have had a refreshing break and are all geared up for the new academic year. For the new freshers, I would like to extend a warm welcome to you on behalf of the Cambridge University Law Society (CULS). CULS is one of the oldest (founded 1901) and most active societies in Cambridge, running a vast array of social and career events, speakers events, pro bono projects, mooting, editorial productions and more. There is something in it for everyone. I would also like to express my heartfelt gratitude towards the CULS committee for all the hard work put into planning Michaelmas term. A special thank you to Rachel, the Vice-President, Vishnu, our Secretary, Will, our Treasurer, Harri, our webmaster and our 40+ strong committee for all their continuous hard work and dedication. Michaelmas term is an exciting term with many events lined up for you, including events run by our two brand new departments– Alumni and Non-
Law, reaching out to our alumni and all students interested in a legal career. Do keep an eye for our publicity on our social media (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram) and mailing list to be kept up to date with all our events. I would also like to draw everyone’s attention to the Solicitors’ Event being held at the University Centre on Thursday 18th October organized by the careers service. This is a good opportunity to meet and learn more about a great number of firms in just one afternoon. We will also be working closely with the Careers Service and faculty this year to organise more academic and careerrelated events and talks (academic debates, CV, cover letter help etc.) for the benefit of all our members. All the best and see you soon! Best wishes, Gabriel Wang CULS President 2018-19

Your future at an international law firm
Expect great things. We do. And as a trainee at Freshfields, so will you. Ask about our culture and the same words come up: supportive, collaborative, inclusive. That might not be what you’d expect of a 275-year-old Magic Circle firm. But our long history is based on being adaptable and innovative.
We recruit fantastic trainees. We want them all to qualify with us and go on to become great lawyers.
Join us and you’ll be learning from the best, with unique training and benefits, and access to opportunities across our global network. You’ll also be making a difference: we’re committed to responsibility, sustainability and diversity.

Foreign Affairs The Cambridge University Law Society has run various exchange partnerships with leading universities worldwide for many years, including visits to Tel Aviv, Paris, Milan and Leiden. This year the CULS Foreign Exchange will continue, with both the Autonomous University of Madrid and Leiden University. The exchange is a brilliant opportunity to meet students from around the world, find out what life is like in a university abroad and even to help you decide whether an Erasmus year might be for you. The trip abroad will take place in early December 2018, and Cambridge students will be welcoming the Madrid and Leiden students in March. During the exchange visits, many engaging activities are on offer including social events, lectures
and sightseeing (including court visits - such as to The Hague on the Leiden exchange). Applications for this year’s exchanges will open in early Michaelmas term. More information can be found on the CULS Facebook page and website. For any enquiries about the exchange programme, please feel free to email foreignaffairs@culs.org.uk or contact the organisers directly Karolina (krz22) Soraya (sseg2) or Robbie (rr551)
