LA ciudad del Cusco, antigua capital del imperio in-
caico, fue declarada Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad por la UNESCO en 1983 y es sin duda uno de los destinos más importantes del país. Entre sus calles empedradas se descubren edificios de construcción inca, como el Koricancha y el Palacio de Inca Roca, junto a construcciones coloniales de estilo barroco andino, como la Catedral y la iglesia de la Compañía; además se puede visitar el pintoresco barrio de San Blas, donde se encuentran los talleres de los mejores artesanos del departamento. Esta mágica ciudad cuenta además con una excitante vida nocturna y con cafés, restaurantes y bares para todos los gustos. A diez minutos de la ciudad se levantan las gigantescas murallas de la fortaleza de Sacsayhuamán. THE
terrain in Cusco is steep, combining fertile inter-Andean valleys with impressive mountains that descend to the rim of the jungle where the temperature rises and the landscape is transformed through a variety of vegetation. The city of Cusco, the ancient capital of the Incan Empire, was placed on the World Cultural Heritage List by UNESCO in 1983, and is without a doubt one of the most important destinations in Peru. There are Incan buildings waiting for you to discover them among its cobble-stoned streets, ones like the Koricancha and the palace of Inca Roca as well as Andean Baroque structures from the Colonial Period like the Cathedral and the Church of the Company of Christ. In addition, you can visit the picturesque neighborhood of San Blas where the best artisans in the department have set up their workshops. This magical city also has an exciting nightlife with cafes, restaurants, and bars for all tastes. Just ten minutes away from the city, there are the massive walls of the SacsayhuamĂĄn fortress, and a few kilometers from there, you find the archeological sites of Qenko, Pukapukara, and Tambomachay, Incan buildings constructed completely with stone. There are also the towns of PĂsac, Maras, Chinchero, and Ollantaytambo, which are spread throughout the Sacred Valley of the Incas, one hour from Cusco. From there, it is possible to catch the train to Machu Picchu. Another way of getting to the citadel is by following one of the Inca Trails, a spectacular network of pathways that snake their way among the snow covered mountains, rivers, and overwhelming countryside. This is one of the best trekking routes in the world, since scattered throughout it, you find remarkable archeological sites and areas rich in unique plant and animal species. Su edificación tuvo dos etapas: primero se construyó la Capilla del Triunfo sobre lo que fue el antiguo templo de Suntur Wasi (Casa de Dios); posteriormente se levantó la catedral sobre el palacio del Inca Wiracocha. En la fachada y el interior domina el estilo renacentista, con una decoración interior muy rica en tallas en cedro y aliso. Sobresalen por su belleza el coro y el púlpito. The building went through two construction stages: first, the Chapel of the Triumph was built on top of what used to be the temple Suntar Wasi (House of God); later, the cathedral itself was built over the remains of the palace of Inca Wiracocha. A Renaissance building in its majority, the interior decoration is rich in cedar and alder woodcarvings. The choir and the pulpit stand out for their beauty. An important collection of paintings from the Cusco School and silver wrought pieces are also kept there.

CUSCO. En tiempos de los Incas fue llama-
da “Huacaypata” palabra quechua que significa lugar de llanto o de encuentro. Era un importante lugar ceremonial en el que se celebraba cada año el Inti Raymi o Fiesta del Sol. Fue el lugar donde Francisco Pizarro proclamó la conquista del Cusco. Con la llegada de los españoles, la plaza se transformó; se edificaron arcos de piedra y se erigieron las construcciones que hasta hoy la rodean.
MAIN SQUARE, CUSCO During the Inca Em-
pire, the square was called Huacaypata, a Quechua word meaning “place of tears” or “meeting place”. It was an important ceremonial spot where the Inti Raymi or Festival of the Sun was celebrated every year. It is also the place where Franciso Pizarro proclaimed the conquest of Cusco. After the Spanish arrived, the plaza changed. They erected stone arches and built the structures that surround it today.

A 4 cuadras de la Plaza de Armas. Es uno de los más pintorescos del Cusco. Llamado “T’oqokachi o hueco de sal”, se caracteriza por sus calles estrechas y empinadas, y sus hermosas casas de estilo colonial. Es conocido como el Barrio de los Artesanos. It is called T’oqokachi or Salt Hole and is characterized by narrow, steep streets and beautiful Colonial houses. It is also known as the Artisans Neighborhood. In San Blas many families accommodate guests in their homes.
Localización: Plaza de Armas. El templo original se construyó en 1571 sobre los terrenos del antiguo Amarucancha, palacio del Inca Huayna Cápac. Luego del terremoto de 1650 tuvo que ser reconstruido hacia 1688. La traza original y la fachada son ejemplos del barroco andino. La portada, tipo “retablo”, está decorada con torres de mediana altura y sus muros de piedra han sido cuidadosamente trabajados. Al ingresar al templo destacan el altar mayor de tres cuerpos y columnas salomónicas, el púlpito de madera y numerosos retablos barrocos, platerescos y churriguerescos. Location: Main Square. The original building was raised in 1571 on the grounds of the ancient palace of Inca Huayna Cápac, the Amarucancha. After the earthquake of 1650, it was rebuilt around 1688. The design and the façade are examples of Andean Baroque. The retable style entrance is decorated with medium size towers and the stonewalls are carefully worked. Once inside, the triple bodied upper altar with salomonic columns, the wooden pulpit, and numerous Baroque, Plateresque, and Churrigueresque shrines catch the eye.

Y CONVENTO DE SAN FRANCISCO - CHURCH AND CONVENT OF SAN FRANCISCO Plaza San Francisco s/n. Visitas: L-S 9:00-17:30. Fundado en 1645, posee dos fachadas y torre única de cantería de estilo español antiguo. Destaca, en el interior del convento, un monumental lienzo, obra de Juan Espinoza de los Monteros. Mide 12 x 9 m y retrata la genealogía de la familia franciscana. Plaza San Francisco. Visiting hours: Mon. – Sat. 9:00 A.M. – 5:30 P.M. Founded in 1645, it has two façades and a single, old Spanish style stone tower. The monumental painting, 12 x 9 meters / 39 x 30 feet, by Juan Espinoza de los Monteros relating the genealogy of the Franciscan family is the highlight of the convent.

Reserva Ecológica Llaullipata,a 10 min. de la Plaza de Armas y a 500 m. de Sacsayhuamán. El Planetarium es una experiencia educativa y entretenida que difunde la poco conocida astronomía Inca. Las instalaciones incluyen un domo que proyecta virtualmente un cielo despejado que muestra las diferentes constelaciones y el “cielo sur”, así como telescopios de última generación y amplios exteriores rodeados de naturaleza y animales autóctonos de los andes. Llaullipata Ecological Reserve, 10 min. Main square and 500 m. Sacsayhuaman. The Planetarium is an educational and entertaining experience that spreads the little-known Inca astronomy. Facilities include a dome that projects virtually cloudless sky showing the different constellations and the “southern sky, as well as next generation telescopes and wide field surrounded by nature and animals indigenous to the Andes.

KORICANCHA, CONVENTO DE SANTO DOMINGO - CONVENT OF SANTO DOMINGO Plazoleta Intipampa, esquina Av. El Sol y calle Santo Domingo. Visitas: L-S 8:30-18:30 y D 14.00-17.00. El Koricancha, de acuerdo a los cronistas, era una de las edificaciones más impactantes del Cusco incaico; lucía en el interior paredes enteras recubiertas con láminas de oro, pues era el templo principal del dios Sol. Los españoles edificaron sobre la construcción original, hacia 1534, la iglesia y el convento dominico, los que se derrumbaron como consecuencia del terremoto de 1650 y se reconstruyeron alrededor de 1681. El convento posee una pinacoteca muy valiosa con lienzos de los siglos XVII y XVIII. Plaza Intipampa, corner of Avenida El Sol and Calle Santo Domingo. The Koricancha was one of the most impressive buildings of Inca Cusco according to the historians: the glowing gilding of the interior walls illuminated what used to be the main temple dedicated to the worship of the Sun God. The Spanish built the church and Dominican convent on top of the original structure around 1534 but they collapsed during the earthquake of 1650 and were rebuilt around 1681. The convent possesses an art gallery of valuable seventeenth and eighteenth century canvasses.

Fueron edificados en el año 1605 sobre el antiguo Acllahuasi o “Casa de las Escogidas” (las acllas eran mujeres dedicadas a labores especiales para el Inca). Su arquitectura corresponde a las últimas etapas del renacimiento y se caracteriza por sus arcos de estilo romano. En el interior se observan aún las huellas de la construcción original. It contains an important archeological collection that includes ceramic, fine metal, and textile pieces as well as mummies.

These two buildings were raised in 1605 on what used to be the Acllahuasi or House of the Chosen Women (acllas were women designated to accomplish special tasks for the Inca). The architecture is late Renaissance and is characterized by the Roman arches. Inside, you can still see traces of the original construction. There is also an exhibition room for murals, fine metal works, textiles, sculptures, and altarpieces. Here they exhibit paintings, textiles, woodcarvings, and Colonial altarpieces. The best among them are Diego Quispe Tito’s paintings, the Arcade carpet, and religious ornaments made of gold and silver threads.

COMPLEJO ARQUEOLÓGICO DE SACSAYHUAMÁN - SACSAYHUAMAN ARCHEOLOGICAL COMPLEX
A 2 km al noreste de la ciudad de Cusco (10 minutos en auto).Visitas: L-D y feriados 7:00 - 18:00.El complejo abarca 33 sitios arqueológicos, de los cuales el más conocido es la Fortaleza de Sacsayhuamán. Esta habría sido en realidad una construcción de carácter religioso, pero por su ubicación y estilo fue considerada por los españoles y cronistas como edificación militar. Allí habría estado ubicado el templo más importante del Hanan Qosqo o Cusco de Arriba, dedicado a la cosmología andina, a la veneración del Inti (Sol), Quilla (Luna), Chaska (Estrellas), Illapa (Rayo) y las demás divinidades. Se le califica de ciclópea por el tamaño de sus piedras, algunas de las cuales pesan entre 90 y 128 toneladas. Cada 24 de junio es escenario del Inti Raymi o Fiesta del Sol. 2 km / 1 mile northeast of Cusco (10 minutes by car). Visiting hours: Mon. – Sun. and holidays 7:00 A.M. – 6:00 P.M. The area contains thirty-three archeological sites. The most famous is Fort Sacsayhuaman. It might well have been a religious structure, but for its location and style, the Spanish and the historians believe it was a military construction. The most important temple in Hanan Qosqo or Upper Cusco might have been located there, dedicated to Andean cosmology and to the worship of the Inti (sun), the Quilla (moon), Chaska (stars), Illapa (ray), and other divinities. It is described as massive for the size of some of its stones, which weigh between 90 and 120 tons. This is also the stage of the Inti Raymi or Festival of the Sun every 24th June.
COMPLEJO ARQUEOLÓGICO DE TAMBOMACHAY - ARCHEOLOGICAL COMPLEX A 7.5 km al noroeste de la ciudad de Cusco (35 minutos en auto).Tambomachay habría cumplido una importante función religiosa vinculada al agua y a la regeneración de la tierra. Se calcula que fue construido alrededor del año 1500 d.C., en estrecho vínculo con Pukapukara. El lugar tiene una extensión aproximada de media hectárea y el material usado para su construcción fue la piedra caliza con aparejos de estilo poligonal. 8 km / 4 miles northwest of Cusco (35 minutes by car) Tambomachay might have fulfilled an important religious function linked to water and the regeneration of the land. Some scholars believe it was built around 1500 A.D., closely linked with Pukapukara. The area covers about one hectare, and was made out of polygonal shaped set limestone.

Forma parte de la red de caminos incas (Qhapaq Ñan). Es una de las rutas de trekking más importantes de Sudamérica. En el recorrido se observan numerosas quebradas y cursos de aguas de origen glaciar. Entre los doce monumentos arqueológicos que se pueden apreciar destacan Qoriwachayrachina, Patallaqta, Runkuraqay, Sayacmarca, Phuyupatamarca, Intipunku, Intipata y Wiñayhuayna

Fue edificado durante la época inca como un área fortificada que incluye un templo, andenes y un sector urbano. Se pueden distinguir dos sectores: uno denominado “Araqama Ayllu”, zona vinculada al culto y la religión; y el segundo “Qosqo Ayllu”, conjunto dedicado a la vivienda. Ollantaytambo fue un importante centro administrativo que probablemente cumplió también funciones militares, tal como lo muestran sus murallas y torreones. 97 km / 60 miles northwest of Cusco (2 hours and 30 minutes by car) The Incas built it as a fort that included a temple, agricultural terraces, and an urban area. There are two distinct sectors: Araqama Ayllu, the religious and worship zone, and Qosqo Ayllu, the residential area. Ollantaytambo was an important administrative center with probable military functions if one considers the walls and towers.

Its Quechua name means “Old Mountain”, but it is also known as “the Lost City of the Incas” since it remained hidden from the West until discovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911.

WARACHIKUY FECHA: 17 DE SEPTIEMBRE Festival desde la época de los Incas. Cada año el festival Warachikuy, llamado “Fiesta para introducir en sociedad a los jovenes” por los españoles. Era algo así como una “iniciación” ceremonia en la que los jóvenes obtenian su primer Wara (taparrabo). Con el fin de obtener el wara “los jóvenes tenían que pasar diferentes pruebas de atletismo y batallas, después de haber superado todas las pruebas, ellos obtenían su mayoría de edad y la capacidad para contraer matrimonio e ir a la guerra.
This festival dates from the Incas. Annually the Warachikuy festival, called “party in order to arm gentlemen” by the Spaniards, was carried out. It was something like an “initiation” ceremony in which young men got their first Wara (breechcloth). In order to get the “wara” the young men had to pass different athletic tests and sham battles; after successfully passing all tests they got their citizenship and ability for getting married and warring.

SEÑOR DE HUANCA FECHA: 14 DE SEPTIEMBRE
Todos los años, el 14 de Septiembre, miles de devotos del Cusco, Perú e incluso de diferentes lugares como Bolivia, Paraguay, Argentina y Chile, se dirigen al Santuario de Huanca para recibir bendiciones. Desde Cusco, toma de 4 a 6 horas de caminata para llegar a “El Señor de Huanca”. El Señor de Huanca fue pintado sobre una roca en torno a donde se tiene levantado un altar. Según relata la historia, en 1675 el indígena Diego Quispe, cansado de los abusos que sufría en la mina Yasos, emprendió la fuga. Encontró un escondite en una cueva, donde fue iluminado por la presencia de Cristo. Los Sacerdotes mercedarios del Cusco, al enterarse, encargaron a un artista de la reputada escuela cuzqueña que pintara una imagen del Señor en el lugar donde fué la aparición. Every year, on September 14, thousands of devotees from Cusco , Peru and even from places such as Bolivia , Paraguay , Argentina and Chile , go to the Santuary of Huanca to receive the blessing of the Lord. From Cusco, it takes about 4-6 hours of walking to geth till “el Señor de Huanca”. In 1675, Diego Quispe, an Indian who escaped from the Yasos mine where he had suffered abuse, hid from his master in a cave. It is said that this place was illuminated by the presence of God. As soon as the priests of Our Lady of Mercy heard the story, an artist from the Cusquenian School went there to paint an image of the Lord in the place where it had been seen.
