Historia de la ciudad - City’s history

LA CULTURA INCA (1.200 - 1.500 D.C.) FUE POSIBLEMENTE LA CIVILIZACIÓN MÁS IMPORTANTE DE SUDAMÉRICA. La organización económica y la distribución de la riqueza, sus manifestaciones artísticas y su arquitectura impresionaron a los primeros cronistas.

Los Incas adoraron a la tierra (Pachamama) y al sol (Inti). El Inca, soberano del Tahuantinsuyo, se consideraba sagrado e hijo del sol, de ahí que las leyendas del origen de los incas nos relatan que el sol envía a sus hijos (Manco Cápac y Mama Ocllo o los cuatro hermanos Ayar y sus esposas) a fundar el Cusco, ciudad sagrada centro del Tahuantinsuyo. La expansión de los Incas es atribuida a que fueron extraordinarios organizadores. La población tenía como núcleo central, familiar y territorial, al Ayllu, y al tener que alejarse por razones laborales, no perdía los vínculos con éste. El Inca movilizaba grandes cantidades de población como premio o castigo y así fue consolidando la expansión, a la vez que se nutría de los conocimientos de las culturas que se habían desarrollado anteriormente. Los cronistas españoles del siglo XVI señalaron que fueron trece sus soberanos: desde el legendario Manco Cápac hasta el controversial Atahualpa, quien perdió su vida durante la conquista española. El Tahuantinsuyo o Imperio Inca, logró

extenderse hasta los actuales países de Colombia por el norte y Chile y Argentina por el sur, incluyendo totalmente los territorios de Bolivia y Ecuador. El poder del Inca fue tangible en todo el Tahuantinsuyo, pero es en la arquitectura cusqueña que alcanza su esplendor: el Koricancha o Templo del sol, las fortalezas de Ollantaytambo y Sacsayhuamán y sobre todo, la ciudad de Machu Picchu. La ciudad actual del Cusco, antigua capital del imperio incaico, fue declarada Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad por la UNESCO en 1983 y es sin duda uno de los destinos más importantes del país. Entre sus calles empedradas se mezclan edificios de construcción inca (Koricancha y el Palacio de Inca Roca) junto a construcciones coloniales de estilo barroco andino, como la Catedral y la iglesia de la Compañía; además se puede visitar el pintoresco barrio de San Blas, donde se encuentran los talleres de los mejores artesanos del departamento. Esta mágica ciudad cuenta además con una excitante vida nocturna y con cafés, restaurantes y bares para todos los gustos.

Their economic system, distribution of wealth, artistic manifestations and architecture impressed the first of the Spanish chroniclers. The Incas worshipped the earth goddess Pachamama and the sun god, the Inti. The Inca sovereign, lord of the Tahuantinsuyo, was held to be sacred and to be the descendant of the sun god. Thus, the legend of the origin of the Incas tells how the sun god sent his children Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo (and in another version the four Ayar brothers and their wives) to found Cuzco, the sacred city and capital of the Inca Empire. The rapid expansion of the Inca empire stemmed from their extraordinary organizational skills. Communities were grouped, both as families and territorially, around the Ayllu, their corner of the empire, and even if villagers had to move away for work reasons, they did not lose their bond to the Ayllu. The Inca moved around large populations, either as a reward or punishment, and thus consolidated the expansion while drawing heavily from the knowledge of the cultures that had flourished prior to the Incas. Sixteenth-century Spanish chroniclers recorded a dynasty of 13 rulers, run-

ning from the legendary Manco Capac down to the controversial Atahualpa, who was to suffer death at the hands of the Spanish conquerors. The Tahuantinsuyo expanded to cover part of what is modern-day Colombia to the north, Chile and Argentina to the south and all of Ecuador and Bolivia. The power of the clans and the Inca was tangible in every corner of the empire, but the might of the Incas reached its peak in the architecture of Cuzco: the Koricancha or Temple of the Sun, the fortresses of Ollantaytambo and Sacsayhuaman, and above all the citadel of Machu Picchu. The city of Cusco, the ancient capital of the Incan Empire, was placed on the World Cultural Heritage List by UNESCO in 1983, and is without a doubt one of the most important destinations in Peru. There are Inca buildings waiting for you to mix them among its cobble-stoned streets, (ones like the Koricancha and the palace of Inca Roca) as well as Andean Baroque structures from the Colonial Period like the Cathedral and the Church of the Company of Christ. In addition, you can visit the picturesque neighborhood of San Blas where the best artisans in the department have set up their workshops. This magical city also has an exciting nightlife with cafes, restaurants, and bars for all tastes.

Today this language is gaining strength and it is expected that it will be hard for it to become extinct. Visitas: Lun-Sab 10h-18h. Dom y Festivos 14h-18h. Su edificación tuvo dos etapas: primero se construyó la Capilla del Triunfo sobre lo que fue el antiguo templo de Suntur Wasi (Casa de Dios); posteriormente se levantó la catedral sobre el palacio del Inca Wiracocha. En la fachada y el interior domina el estilo renacentista, con una decoración interior muy rica en tallas. Conserva una colección importante de pinturas de la escuela cusqueña y objetos de plata repujada.

Visitas: Lun-Sab 8:30h-18:30h y Dom 14h 17h El Qoricancha, de acuerdo a los cronistas, era una de las edificaciones más impactantes del Cusco incaico; lucía en el interior paredes enteras recubiertas con láminas de oro, pues era el templo principal del dios Sol. Los españoles edificaron sobre la construcción original, hacia 1534, la iglesia y el convento dominico, los que se derrumbaron como consecuencia del terremoto de 1650 y se reconstruyeron alrededor de 1681. El convento posee una pinacoteca muy valiosa con lienzos de los siglos XVII y XVIII.

Visiting hours: Mon – Sat 8:30am – 6:30pm and Sun 2pm – 5pm.The Qoricancha was one of the most impressive buildings of incaic Cusco according to the historians: the glowing gilding of the interior walls illuminated what used to be the main temple dedicated to the worship of the Sun God. The Spanish built the church and Dominican convent on top of the original structure around 1534 but they collapsed during the earthquake of 1650 and were rebuilt around 1681. The convent possesses an art gallery of valuable seventeenth and eighteenth century canvasses.

Visiting hours: Mon– Sat 10am – 6pm Sun and Holidays 2pm – 6pm The building went through two construction stages: first, the Chapel of the Triumph was built on top of what used to be the temple Suntar Wasi (House of God); later, the cathedral itself was built over the remains of the palace of Inca Wiracocha. A Renaissance building in its majority, the interior decoration is rich in woodcarvings. An important collection of paintings from the Cusco School and silver wrought prices are also kept there.

En la Plaza de Armas encontramos el templo original que se construyó en 1571 sobre los terrenos del antiguo Amarucancha, palacio del Inca Huayna Cápac. Luego del terremoto de 1650 tuvo que ser reconstruido hacia 1688. La traza original y la fachada son ejemplos del barroco andino. La portada, tipo “retablo”, está decorada con torres de mediana altura y sus muros de piedra han sido cuidadosamente trabajados.

A cuatro cuadras de la Plaza de Armas, este barrio es uno de los barrios más pintorescos del Cusco. Llamado T’oqokachi (hueco de sal), se caracteriza por sus calles estrechas y empinadas, y sus hermosas casas de estilo colonial. Es conocido como el Barrio de los Artesanos. San Blas cuenta con numerosas familias que ofrecen alojamiento en sus casas. También podéis encontrar el templo de San Blas, fundado el año 1560.

En tiempos de los Incas fue llamada “Huacaypata” palabra quechua que significa lugar de llanto o de encuentro. Era un importante lugar ceremonial en el que se celebraba cada año el Inti Raymi o Fiesta del Sol. Fue el lugar donde Francisco Pizarro proclamó la conquista del Cusco. Con la llegada de los españoles, la plaza se transformó; se edificaron arcos de piedra y se erigieron las construcciones que hasta hoy la rodean.

Calle Mantas s/n. Visitas: L-S 8h -12h y 14h - 17h. La iglesia, de estilo barroco, se edificó entre los años 1657 y 1680. La sacristía guarda su tesoro más preciado, una impresionante custodia en oro y piedras preciosas de 1,3 m de alto y 22 kg de peso, coronada por una gran perla en forma de sirena, considerada la segunda más grande del mundo.

The design and the façade are examples of Andean Baroque. The retable style entrance is decorated with medium size towers and the stonewalls are carefully worked.

4 blocks from the Main Square, It’s one of the most picturesque areas in all Cusco. It is called T’oqokachi (Salt Hole) and is characterized by narrow, steep streets and beautiful Colonial houses. It is also known as the Artisans Neighborhood. In San Blas many families accommodate guests in their homes. You can also find San Blas church, founded in 1560.

During the Inca Empire, the square was called Huacaypata, a Quechua word meaning “place of tears” or “meeting place”. It was an important ceremonial spot where the Inti Raymi or Festival of the Sun was celebrated every year. It is also the place where Francisco Pizarro proclaimed the conquest of Cusco. After the Spanish arrived, the plaza changed. They erected stone arches and built the structures that surround it today.

Mantas st. Visiting hours: Mon–Sun 8am – 12pm and 2pm – 5pm. The Baroque church was built between 1657 and 1680. The sacristy holds its most precious treasure: an impressive gold and gemstones encrusted monstrance, 1,3 meters / 3 feet high and of 22 kilos. It is crowned with one large mermaid shaped pearl, considered the second largest in the world.

PALACIO ARZOBISPAL Y PIEDRA DE LOS 12 ANGULOS ARCHBISHOP S HOUSE & THE 12 ANGLE STONE Intersección calle Hatunrumiyoc y Jr. Herrajes. Visitas: L-S 8h -11:30h y 15h17:30h El edificio es una construcción virreinal de influencia árabe, que fue levantada sobre las bases del palacio del Inca Roca. Actualmente es la sede del Museo de Arte Religioso. En la calle Hatunrumiyoc se puede apreciar un antiguo muro inca que fue parte del palacio del Inca Roca y que es una muestra admirable del trabajo inca en pulir y colocar cada piedra. En esta estructura destaca la llamada “Piedra de los Doce Ángulos”, famosa por el perfecto trabajo y ensamblaje de sus esquinas.

COMPLEJO ARQUEOLOGICO DE SAQSAYWAMAN SAQSAYWAMAN ARCHAEOLOGICAL COMPLEX

Hatunrumiyoc and Jr.Herrajes. Visiting hours: Mon. – Sat 8am – 11:30am and 3pm – 5:30pm This Vice-royal building with Arabic influence was raised on the foundations of the palace of Inca Roca. Presently, it is the main centre of the Museum of Religious Art. On Hatunrumiyoc Street, you can see an old Inca wall that was part of the Inca Roca palace and demonstrates the admirable construction skill of the Inca in terms of polished and perfectly placed stones. The most remarkable part is the “Twelve-Angle Stone”, famous for the perfect work and assembling of its angles.

A 2 km al noreste de la ciudad de Cusco (10 minutos en auto).Visitas: L-D y feriados 7h - 18h. El complejo abarca 33 sitios arqueológicos, de los cuales el más conocido es la Fortaleza de Saqsaywuaman. Esta habría sido en realidad una construcción de carácter religioso, pero por su ubicación y estilo fue considerada por los españoles y cronistas como edificación militar. Allí habría estado ubicado el templo más importante del Hanan Qosqo o Cusco de Arriba, dedicado a la cosmología andina, a la veneración del Inti (Sol), Quilla (Luna), Chaska (Estrellas), illapa (Rayo) y las demás divinidades. Se le califica de ciclópea por el

tamaño de sus piedras, algunas de las cuales pesan entre 90 y 128 toneladas. Cada 24 de junio es escenario del Inti Raymi o Fiesta del Sol. 2 km / 1 mile northeast of Cusco (10 minutes by car). Visiting hours: Mon – Sun and holidays 7am – 6pm .The area contains thirty-three archaeological sites. The most famous is Fort Sacsayhuaman. It might well have been a religious structure, but for its location and style, the Spanish and the historians believe it was a military construction. The most important temple in Hanan Qosqo or Upper Cusco might have been located there, dedicated to Andean cosmology and to the worship of the Inti (sun), the Quilla (moon), Chaska (stars), illapa (ray), and other divinities. It is described as massive for the size of some of its stones, which weigh between 90 and 120 tons. This is also the stage of the Inti Raymi every 24th June.

EN el principio Dios creó el cielo y la tierra. Pero después de tan arduo trabajo, le dio sed. Así que no se le ocurrió nada mejor que inventar la uva y de esta fruta, hacer un fino aguardiente. Le llamó PISCO. Entonces vio que el pisco era bueno. Luego siguió divirtiéndose creando animales, plantas y el resto del mundo. Destaca, en el interior del convento, un monumental lienzo, obra de Juan Espinoza de los Monteros que mide 12 x 9 m y retrata la genealogía de la familia franciscana.

A 97 km al noroeste de la ciudad del Cusco (2 horas y 30 minutos en auto). Ollantaytambo fue edificado durante la época inca como un área fortificada que incluye un templo, andenes y un sector urbano. Perú es un país que no deja de sorprender tanto a extranjeros como a locales. Siempre hay un nuevo hallazgo arqueológico para conocer, un camino diferente por recorrer, un pueblito escondido del que nunca escuchaste donde vivir una experiencia única. Esta vez se trata de la Ruta del Barroco Andino. ¿Barroco andino? Sí, un arte que nace de la fusión de las culturas europeas del siglo XVI y la propia indígena local. Se trata de tres monumentos patrimoniales del siglo XVII y XVIII: la

iglesia de San Pedro Apóstol de Andahuaylillas, la de San Juan Bautista de Huaro y la capilla de la Virgen de la Candelaria de Canincunca, todos cerca de la Ciudad Imperial. Esta mezcla de tradiciones católicas y precoloniales se traduce en color y horror al vacío. El Lunes previo al Viernes Santo, miles de peregrinos se concentran en la ciudad de Cusco. Una arraigada devoción los trae desde las aldeas más remotas para acompañar en procesión al Cristo Moreno, el Señor de los Temblores.

The Monday before Holly Friday, thousands of pilgrims are concentrated in Cusco. A deep-rooted devotion brings them from the most remote villages in procession to go along with the “Black Christ”, the “Lord of the Earthquakes”.

El 2 de Mayo de cada año, al pie de cada crucifijo cusqueño, símbolo del madero en que murió Cristo, se congregan los devotos del Cusco. El Cruz Velakuy, o velatorio a la cruz, es una de las fiestas más populares de Cusco. Moviliza a cientos de devotos, representados por sus mayordomos que bien saben lucir sus mejores ofrendas. Las homenajeadas son las cruces erigidas por toda la ciudad; ellas aguardan cercadas de vistosos y engalanados altares. El Cruz Velakuy es una muestra del fervor religioso que se despliega entre bandas de músicos que invaden las calles, abundantes bebidas y los más ricos potajes de la gastronomía cusqueña.

On May the 2nd, each year, at the foot of every Cusquenian crucifix, symbol of cross on which Christ died, devotees from all over the city gather together. The “Cruz Velakuy” , or wake to the cross, is one of the most popular holidays in Cusco. It mobilizes hundreds of devotees represented by their stewards who bring out their best offerings. The honorees are the crosses erected throughout the city. They wait surrounded by colorful and decorated altars. The “Cruz Velakuy” is a sign of religious fervor that unfolds between bands of musicians who fill the streets, plenty of drinks and the most delicious dishes of Cusco´s cuisine.

En ninguna otra parte de Perú se rinde tanto homenaje a las divinidades católicas como en el Cusco. Sin embargo, el primer historiador de las Américas, el Inca Garcilaso, nos enseña que los españoles adaptaron sus ritos a las costumbres indígenas. Cada año, los incas llevaron en procesión a las momias de sus reyes difuntos, y en Corpus las imágenes de los principales santos y vírgenes, depositados en las distintas iglesias cusqueñas, son llevadas en procesión hasta la majestuosa catedral de Cusco. En tropel, la multitud invade los templos para escuchar misa, mientras que en sus casas les aguardan otras celebraciones, acompañadas de bandas de músicos y el tradicional platillo para la ocasión, el chiriuchu. El Corpus Christi es celebrado durante nueve días y culmina con la veneración a la imagen de Cristo, que sale a recorrer las calles el octavo día, después del Te deum.

There is no place in Peru where Catholic divinities are worshiped like in Cusco. However, the first historian of the Americas, the “Inca Garcilaso”, teaches us that the Spanish adapted their rituals to native customs. Each year, the Incas carried in procession the mummies of their dead kings, and in Corpus images of the major saints and virgins, deposited in the various churches of Cusco, are carried in procession to the majestic cathedral of Cusco. El Señor de Qoyllurit’i es, sin duda, la más grande de las concentraciones de comunidades y Naciones del Sur del Perú; en la actualidad, más de 100,000 peregrinos de la región, también de otros departamentos del país y turistas extranjeros suben en procesiones al ritmo de bandas de música, comparsas bailando y transportando las cruces que serán bendecidas y levantadas en los tres glaciares al pie de los Apus. Cada participante quiere hacer su pago a la tierra y a los dioses antiguos. Las fiestas empiezan en las diferentes comunidades con ceremonias a cargo de los mayordomos, los cuales son designados con años de anticipación y deben pagar todos los gastos de cada Comunidad (en transportes y alimentación).

Every participant wants to pay tribute to the earth and to their ancient Gods. The festivity starts at the many communities with ceremonies in charge of

the “mayordomos” (stewards) who are designated with many years of anticipation to pay every expense of every community (food and transportation) during this feast. A mass is being carried out in one of Cusco´s many churches where friends and family members of the community are gathered together. They say their prayers to the almighty Lord for protection in this 180 Km trip to Mahuallani town; starting point of the long way to Qoillurit´i.

Surrounding the sanctuary area, simple, sophisticated and all kind of tents are being raised, along with canvas and plastic sheets to warm and shelter pilgrims from the whipping weather of the Andes. It´s three intense days of prayers, processions and typical dances to the rhythm of the bands. The valley becomes a gigantic stage where all kind of colors, wind noises, scents and repeated echoes from nonstoping musical bands, bounce from mountain to mountain throughout the night.

Inti Raymi Fiesta del Sol Festival of the Sun

26 Inti Raymi

Coincidiendo con el solsticio de invierno (momento en que el Sol se encuentra en el punto más alejado del ecuador) en el hemisferio Sur y teniendo en cuenta los eventos astronómicos que surgen a raíz de éste como son el apareamiento de los animales, el auge de la agricultura, etc, aquí en Cusco se celebra el Inti Raymi. El Inti Raymi es una fiesta ancestral andina, en la cual se le ofrecían mujeres, animales y tierras al Inti (deidad suprema del imperio inca) como agradecimiento y veneración a su generosidad. Dicha ceremonia era presidida por el Inca, el hijo del Sol y no faltaba de nada; había abundante música, comida y bebida. En el año 1572, el virrey Francisco de Toledo, la prohibió por considerarla una ceremonia pagana y contraria a la fe católica. Pero en el año 1944 un grupo de Cusqueños encabezados por el Sr. Faustino Espinoza Navarro (miembro fundador de la Academia Peruana de la Lengua Quechua), y gracias a las anotaciones del cronista Garcilaso de la Vega se pudo realizar la reconstrucción de la celebración. A partir de esa fecha, dicho evento

se realiza abierto al público y actualmente es un gran reclamo turístico. La fiesta empieza en el Qoricancha (Templo del sol), donde el Sapan lnka Apu Tayta (Hijo del Sol) inicia sus veneraciones al Inti y a la Pachamama (Madre tierra). Posteriormente, todos los personajes que constituyen esta gran escenificación, se trasladan hacia el Hauqaypata (Plaza de Armas). Desde el Sapan Inka (Hijo del Sol), Qoya (Compañera legítima del Inca), Willac Uma (Sumo sacerdote Inca), Auqui (Hijo del Inca), Pututeros (personaje que sopla las caracolas), Nust’akunas (personajes que van con cestos de ofrendas y esparcen flores de retama por donde pasa la realeza incaica), los minis-

tros, los científicos y los guardianes. En el Hauqaypata se realiza una pequeña escenificación, en donde el supremo Inca y el Alcalde de la Ciudad, invitan a la población a unir fuerzas para que la ciudad sea prospera y dichosa. Para concluir la escenificación en el Huaqaypata, todo el elenco danza alrededor de la Plaza de Armas y toma dirección hacia el último escenario: la explanada de Sacsayhuaman, en donde se realiza la gran escenificación de la antigua ceremonia incaica, con la llegada del Inca, en medio de sus soldados y acompañado de la Qoya . El momento principal de la ceremonia es cuando se ofrece, con gran ritual,

la Chicha (bebida a base de maíz) a la Pachamama, se llama y pide permiso a los Apus (montañas) más importantes del Cusco y se sacrifica una llama para propiciar el retorno del Sol. El Willac Uma (sumo sacerdote) verá en las entrañas de este apreciado animal, lo que nos depara el futuro y lo anunciará a todos los participantes. A partir de aquí, todo es festejo, los danzantes de los cuatros Suyos (Regiones del Imperio Incaico o Tahuantinsuyo) empiezan sus coreografías, después ellos dan paso a los danzantes de las diferentes comunidades que vienen también a agradecer y pedir prosperidad para el año siguiente.

Inti Raymi 27

Coinciding with the winter solstice (time at which the Sun is at the farthest point from the equator) in the Southern Hemisphere, and considering the astronomical events that arise as a result of it, such as animal mating, agricultural growth, etc, Cusco celebrates the Inti Raymi. Inti Raymi is an ancient Andean celebration in which women, animals and lands were offered to the Inti (supreme deity of the Incan Empire) as a sign of gratitude and veneration for his generosity. The Inca, the son of the Sun, presided over the celebration and there was never a shortage of anything; there was always plenty of music, food and drink. In 1572, Viceroy Francisco de Toledo banned this celebration because he considered it pagan and contrary to the catholic faith. The most important moment of the ceremony is when the Chicha (corn based drink) is offered with a great ritual to the Pachamama, the most important Apus (mountains) of Cusco are summoned and asked for their permission and a llama is sacrificed to encourage the return of the sun. animal and announcing it to all the participants. Una aventura en todos los sentidos de la palabra. El dulce, el frío y la volatilidad se mezclan en este cóctel hecho a base de pisco y limón peruanos. Un paladar sensible, un bebedor sensible y cualquier excusa es suficiente para tomar un pisco sour, ya que sólo se hace en el Perú. An adventure in all meanings of the word. The sweetness, the coldness and the volatility are all mixed up in this cocktail based on Peruvian Pisco and lime. A sensitive taste, a sensitive drinker and any excuse are enough reasons to enjoy a Pisco sour, a delicious cocktail that’s only made in Peru.

Ingredientes para 1 Pisco Sour 3 oz de pisco puro Quebranta 1 oz de jarabe de goma 1 oz de jugo de limón 1 clara de huevo 2 cubitos de hielo 3 gotas de Amargo de Angostura (para adornar) Preparación Verter en una coctelera las 3 onzas de pisco, 1 onza de jarabe de goma, 1 onza de jugo de limón y una clara de huevo, añadir el hielo. Agitar energicamente durante 10 segundos. Al abrir la coctelera todos los ingredientes ya estan bién mezclados, sólo falta escoger un vaso al gusto para servir nuestro propio Pisco Sour y adornar la espuma con tres gotitas de Amargo de Angostura.

Ingredients for one Pisco sour 3 oz. of pure “Quebranta Pisco” 1 oz. of sugar syrup 1 oz. of fresh lime juice 1 egg white 2 ice cubes 3 drops of “Amargo de Angostura” (for dressing) Directions Pour 3 ounces of Pisco, 1 ounce of sugar syrup, 1 ounce of lime juice and 1 egg white and add the ice cubes into the cocktail mixer. Shake vigorously during 10 seconds. When opening the cocktail mixer all the ingredients should already be well mixed up. It only takes to choose an adequate drinking glass and add 3 drops of “ Amargo de Angostura” to serve our home made delicious Pisco sour.
