HISTORIA DE LA CIUDAD La cultura Inca (1.200 - 1.500 d.C.) fue posiblemente la civilización más importante de Sudamérica. La organización económica y la distribución de la riqueza, sus manifestaciones artísticas y su arquitectura impresionaron a los primeros cronistas.

Los Incas adoraron a la tierra (Pachamama) y al sol (Inti). El Inca, soberano del Tahuantinsuyo, se consideraba sagrado e hijo del sol, de ahí que las leyendas del origen de los incas nos relaten que el sol envía a sus hijos (Manco Cápac y Mama Ocllo o los cuatro hermanos Ayar y sus esposas) a fundar el Cusco, ciudad sagrada centro del Tahuantinsuyo.

La expansión de los Incas es atribuida a que fueron extraordinarios organizadores. La población tenía como núcleo central, familiar y territorial, al ayllu, y al tener que alejarse por razones laborales, no perdía los vínculos con éste. El Inca movilizaba grandes cantidades de población como premio o castigo y así fue consolidando la expansión, a la vez que se nutría de los conocimientos de las culturas que se habían desarrollado anteriormente.

Los cronistas españoles del siglo XVI señalaron que fueron trece sus soberanos: desde el legendario Manco Cápac hasta el controversial Atahualpa, quien perdió su vida durante la conquista española.

El Tahuantinsuyo o Imperio Inca, logró extenderse hasta los actuales países de Colombia por el norte y Chile y Argentina por el sur, incluyendo totalmente los territorios de Bolivia y Ecuador.

El poder del Inca es tangible en todo el Tahuantinsuyo, pero es en la arquitectura cusqueña que alcanza su esplendor: el Koricancha o Templo del sol, las fortalezas de Ollantaytambo y Sacsayhuamán y sobre todo, la ciudad de Machu Picchu.

La ciudad actual del Cusco, antigua capital del imperio incaico, fue declarada Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad por la UNESCO en 1983 y es sin duda uno de los destinos más importantes del país.

Entre sus calles empedradas se mezclan edificios de construcción inca, (Koricancha y el Palacio de Inca Roca) junto a construcciones coloniales de estilo barroco andino, como la Catedral y la iglesia de la Compañía; además se puede visitar el pintoresco barrio de San Blas, donde se encuentran los talleres de los mejores artesanos del departamento.

Esta mágica ciudad cuenta además con una excitante vida nocturna y con cafés, restaurantes y bares para todos los gustos.

iHISTORY OF THE CITY..

The Inca empire (1200 - 1500 BC) was possibly the most organized civilization in South America. Their economic system, distribution of wealth, artistic manifestations and architecture impressed the first of the Spanish chroniclers.

The Incas worshipped the earth goddess Pachamama and the sun god, the Inti. The Inca sovereign, lord of the Tahuantinsuyo, the Inca empire, was held to be sacred and to be the descendant of the sun god. Thus, the legend of the origin of the Incas tells how the sun god sent his children Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo (and in another version the four Ayar brothers and their wives) to found Cuzco, the sacred city and capital of the Inca empire. The rapid expansion of the Inca empire stemmed from their extraordinary organizational skills. Communities were grouped, both as families and territorially, around the ayllu, their corner of the empire, and even if villagers had to move away for work reasons, they did not lose their bond to the ayllu. The Inca moved around large populations, either as a reward or punishment, and thus consolidated the expansion while drawing heavily from the knowledge of the cultures that had flourished prior to the Incas.

Sixteenth-century Spanish chroniclers recorded a dynasty of 13 rulers, running from the legendary Manco Capac down to the controversial Atahualpa, who was to suffer death at the hands of the Spanish conquerors. The Tahuantinsuyo expanded to cover part of what is modern-day Colombia to the north, Chile and Argentina to the south and all of Ecuador and Bolivia.

The power of the clans and the Inca was tangible in every corner of the empire, but the might of the Incas reached its peak in the architecture of Cuzco: the Koricancha or Temple of the Sun, the fortresses of Ollantaytambo and Sacsayhuaman, and above all the citadel of Machu Picchu.

The city of Cusco, the ancient capital of the Incan Empire, was placed on the World Cultural Heritage List by UNESCO in 1983, and is without a doubt one of the most important destinations in Peru.

There are Incan buildings waiting for you to mix them among its cobble-stoned streets, (ones like the Koricancha and the palace of Inca Roca) as well as Andean Baroque structures from the Colonial Period like the Cathedral and the Church of the Company of Christ. In addition, you can visit the picturesque neighborhood of San Blas where the best artisans in the department have set up their workshops.

This magical city also has an exciting nightlife with cafes, restaurants, and bars for all tastes.

TKORICANCHA, CONVENTO DE SANTO DOMINGO - CONVENT OF SANTO DOMINGO Plazoleta Intipampa, esquina Av. El Sol y calle Santo Domingo. Visitas: L-S 8:30-18:30 y D 14.00-17.00.

El Koricancha, de acuerdo a los cronistas, era una de las edificaciones más impactantes del Cusco incaico; lucía en el interior paredes enteras recubiertas con láminas de oro, pues era el templo principal del dios Sol. Los españoles edificaron sobre la construcción original, hacia 1534, la iglesia y el convento dominico, los que se derrumbaron como consecuencia del terremoto de 1650 y se reconstruyeron alrededor de 1681. El convento posee una pinacoteca muy valiosa con lienzos de los siglos XVII y XVIII. Plaza Intipampa, corner of Avenida El Sol and Calle Santo Domingo. The Koricancha was one of the most impressive buildings of Inca Cusco according to the historians: the glowing gilding of the interior walls illuminated what used to be the main temple dedicated to the worship of the Sun God. The Spanish built the church and Dominican convent on top of the original structure around 1534 but they collapsed during the earthquake of 1650 and were rebuilt around 1681. The convent possesses an art gallery of

valuable seventeenth and eighteenth century canvasses.

TCATEDRAL DE LA CIUDAD DE CUSCO - CATHEDRAL OF CUSCO Visitas: L-S 10:00-18:00 y D y F 14:00-18:00.

Su edificación tuvo dos etapas: primero se construyó la Capilla del Triunfo sobre lo que fue el antiguo templo de Suntur Wasi (Casa de Dios); posteriormente se levantó la catedral sobre el palacio del Inca Wiracocha. En la fachada y el interior domina el estilo renacentista, con una decoración interior muy rica en tallas en cedro y aliso. Sobresalen por su belleza el coro y el púlpito. Conserva una colección importante de pinturas de la escuela cusqueña y objetos de plata repujada.

The building went through two construction stages: first, the Chapel of the Triumph was built on top of what used to be the temple Suntar Wasi (House of God); later, the cathedral itself was built over the remains of the palace of Inca Wiracocha. A Renaissance building in its majority, the interior decoration is rich in cedar and alder woodcarvings. The choir and the pulpit stand out for their beauty. An important collection of paintings from the Cusco School

and silver wrought pieces are also kept there.

En tiempos de los Incas fue llamada “Huacaypata” palabra quechua que significa lugar de llanto o de encuentro. Era un importante lugar ceremonial en el que se celebraba cada año el Inti Raymi o Fiesta del Sol. Fue el lugar donde Francisco Pizarro proclamó la conquista del Cusco.

Con la llegada de los españoles, la plaza se transformó; se edificaron arcos de piedra y se erigieron las construcciones que hasta hoy la rodean.

Fundado en 1560 durante la Colonia, conserva un púlpito barroco que constituye una obra maestra del trabajo y tallado de la madera, atribuida al artista indígena Diego Quispe

During the Inca Empire, the square was called Huacaypata, a Quechua word meaning “place of tears” or “meeting place”.

It was an important ceremonial spot where the Inti Raymi or Festival of the Sun was celebrated every year. It is also the place where Franciso Pizarro proclaimed the conquest of Cusco. After the Spanish arrived, the plaza changed. They erected

El templo original se construyó en 1571 sobre los terrenos del antiguo Amarucancha, palacio del Inca Huayna Cápac. Luego del terremoto de 1650 tuvo que ser reconstruido hacia 1688. La traza original y la fachada son ejemplos del barroco andino. La portada, tipo “retablo”, está decorada con torres de mediana altura y sus muros de piedra han sido cuidadosamente trabajados. Al ingresar al templo destacan el altar mayor de tres cuerpos y columnas salomónicas, el púlpito de madera y numerosos retablos barrocos, platerescos y churriguerescos.

The original building was raised in 1571 on the grounds of the ancient palace of Inca Huayna Cápac, the Amarucancha. After the earthquake of 1650, it was rebuilt around 1688. The design and the façade are examples of Andean Baroque. The retable style entrance is decorated with medium size towers and the stonewalls are carefully worked. Once inside, the triple bodied upper altar with salomonic columns, the wooden pulpit, and numerous Baro-

que, Plateresque, and Churrigueresque shrines catch the eye.

Visitas: L-S 8:00-11:30 y 15:00-17:30 El edificio es una construcción virreinal de influencia árabe, que fue levantada sobre las bases del palacio de Inca Roca. Actualmente es la sede del Museo de Arte Religioso. En la calle Hatunrumiyoc se puede apreciar un antiguo muro inca que fue parte del palacio de Inca Roca y que es una muestra admirable del trabajo inca en pulir y colocar cada piedra. En esta estructura destaca la llamada “Piedra de los Doce Ángulos”, famosa por el perfecto trabajo y ensamblaje de sus esquinas This Vice-royal building with Arabic influence was raised on the foundations of the palace of Inca Roca. Presently, it is the main centre of the Museum of Religious Art. On Calle Hatunrumiyoc, you can see an old Inca wall that was part of the Inca Roca palace and demonstrates the admirable construction skill of the Inca in terms of polished and perfectly placed stones. The most remarkable part is the “Twelve-Angle Stone”, famous for the perfect work

and assembling of its angles.

Fueron edificados en el año 1605 sobre el antiguo Acllahuasi o “Casa de las Escogidas” (las acllas eran mujeres dedicadas a labores especiales para el Inca). Su arquitectura corresponde a las últimas etapas del renacimiento y se caracteriza por sus arcos de estilo romano. En el interior se observan aún las huellas de la construcción original. Posee una sala de exposición de pinturas murales, trabajos en orfebrería, textilería, esculturas y retablos.

Exposiciones de pintura, textiles, tallas en madera y retablos coloniales. Las piezas que destacan son las pinturas de Diego Quispe Tito y la alfombra de la galería de las Arcadas, además de ornamentos religiosos con hilos de oro y plata.

These two buildings were raised in 1605 on what used to be the Acllahuasi or House of the Chosen Women (acllas were women designated to accomplish special tasks for the Inca).

The architecture is late Renaissance and is characterized by the Roman arches. Inside, you can still see traces of the original construction. There is also an exhibition room for murals, fine metal works, textiles, sculptures, and altarpieces.

Here they exhibit paintings, textiles, woodcarvings, and Colonial altarpieces. The best among them are Diego Quispe Tito’s paintings, the Arcade carpet, and religious ornaments made of

gold and silver threads.

CHURCH AND CONVENT OF SAN FRANCISCO

Fundado en 1645, posee dos fachadas y torre única de cantería de estilo español antiguo. Destaca, en el interior del convento, un monumental lienzo, obra de Juan Espinoza de los Monteros.

Mide 12 x 9 m y retrata la genealogía de la familia franciscana.

Plaza San Francisco. Visiting hours: Mon. – Sat. 9:00 A.M. – 5:30 P.M. Founded in 1645, it has two façades and a single, old Spanish style stone tower. The monumental painting, 12 x 9 meters / 39 x 30 feet, by Juan Espinoza de los Monteros relating the genea-

logy of the Franciscan family is the highlight of the convent.

TTEMPLO Y CONVENTO DE LA MERCED CHURCH AND CONVENT OF LA MERCED

La iglesia, de estilo barroco, se edificó entre los años 1657 y 1680. La sacristía guarda su tesoro más preciado, una impresionante custodia en oro y piedras preciosas de 1,3 m de alto y 22 kg de peso, coronada por una gran perla en forma de sirena, considerada la segunda más grande del mundo.

TCOMPLEJO ARQUEOLÓGICO DE SACSAYHUAMÁN - SACSAYHUAMAN ARCHEOLOGICAL COMPLEX A 2 km al noreste de la ciudad de Cusco (10 minutos en auto).Visitas: L-D y feriados 7:00 - 18:00.El complejo abarca 33 sitios arqueológicos, de los cuales el más conocido es la Fortaleza de Sacsayhuamán. En nuestra cultura, se celebra el 1 de noviembre y lo festejan quienes aún permanecen vivos en este mundo terrenal; mientras que el 2 de noviembre se recuerda el día de los difuntos con romería a los cementerios con grupos de música y danza.

Los deudos delante de la tumba del difunto brindan con abundante chicha, cerveza y le ofrecen la comida, frutas y todo aquello que en vida degustaba agradablemente el finado. Son clásicas en estas fechas, los lechones, tamales y las fiestas de bautizo de las t’anta wawas.

T SANTURANTIKUY: NAVIDAD CUSQUEÑA - CUSCO’S CHRISTMAS La celebración mundial de la navidad en el Cusco adquiere contornos especiales, pues en torno a ella hay diversas actividades. La ciudad vive un ambiente festivo con el arreglo de los balcones del Centro Monumental, con luces, guirnaldas y motivos navideños. La Municipalidad desde los primeros días del mes de diciembre coloca hermosas alegorías luminosas que alegran las noches de la ciudad.

Cada 24 de diciembre, en la Plaza Mayor realizamos la feria más grande de arte popular y costumbrista del Perú: La feria del Santurantikuy, donde centenares de artesanos provenientes de distintos lugares del Cusco y de otras regiones del país, exponen hermosos y originales trabajos fruto de su espíritu creador a lo largo del año y los cuales adornarán los nacimientos de hogares e instituciones. El Niño Manuelito es el personaje central de la fiesta de la navidad en Cusco.

6 DE ENERO - JANUARY 6th REYES MAGOS - THE 3 WISE MEN La tradicional Navidad Cusqueña termina con la Fiesta de la Bajada de Reyes, evento costumbrista que despliega una gran cantidad de artistas en una escenificación en vivo acompañada de la presentación de coros, este evento tiene como escenarios las distintas parroquias de la cuidad principalmente en San Blas y la Recoleta. EMUFEC S.A. lo escenifica en fechas las cuales oscilan en el mismo mes de Enero, con el propósito que, el público nacional y extranjero se deleite con esta estampa colorida y costumbrista.

The traditional Cusqueñian Christmas ends with the feast of Ephiphany, when the 03 wise men visit baby Jesus and present him with gifts of gold, myrrh and frankincense. Traditionally folkloric musicians in large numbers will perform live in accompaniment with local choirs. This event takes place in the parishes of the city, but can be appreciated to a greater extent in San Blas and Recoleta. EMUFEC S.A. stages the event in the month of January, to allow both the national and international audience to delight in this traditional and

colorful celebration.

Every 24th of December in the main Plaza de Armas, Peru’s largest and most traditional arts and crafts fare takes place known as: Santurankikuy, where hundreds of artisans from different parts of Cusco and other regions of the country exhibit their beautiful and original works of art. These works are the fruit of their yearlong creative spirit which and adorn households and institutions alike. El Niño Manuelito is the central character of the celebration of Christmas in Cusco.

Currently, the popular Santurantikuy art fair is organized by the sector of Council of Festivities in Cusco (EMUFEC SA), making sure that stalls are well marked, ordered

and grouped according to products sold.

Patrona Jurada del Cusco, La Virgen de Belén conocida con el apelativo de Mamacha de Belén por su bello apacible rostro ha sido considera una de las imágenes que nunca faltan a la tradicional y multitudinaria procesión del Corpus Christi en el Cusco Sus vestidos son engalanados desde hace siglos por sus fervientes devotos. Elegantes sedas y encajes, hilos de oro bordados y piedras preciosas, mientras que en sus manos lleva al niño Jesús arropado a la usanza andina (hualtadito). La multitudinaria procesión se lleva a cabo en el antiguo barrio de Belén, fuegos artificiales en la víspera anuncias las celebraciones cuya fiestas centrales se celebran el domingo siguiente a su día central.

Cusco sworn Patroness, Our Lady of Bethlehem, affectionately known as Mamacha of Bethlehem, for her beautifully peaceful face has been considered one of the images that never fails to appear in the traditional procession of Corpus Christi in Cusco.

Her dresses have been specifically decorated for centuries by her fervent devotees. Elegant silks and lace, gold thread embroidery and precious stones, while in her hands she carries baby Jesus, wrapped in customary Andean style clothing (hualtadito). This feast is marked by an extensive procession that is held in the old district of Bethlehem. On the eve of the event fireworks announce the beginning of the celebrations and the central festivities are held

14 DE FEBRERO REMATE CARNAVAL FEBRUARY 14TH CARNIVAL 21 DE FEBRERO FIESTA DE COMPADRES FEBRUARY 21ST FEAST OF COMADRES Festividad que une a la población cusqueña a través de la alegoría y el juego mesurado. Las “yunzas o cortamontes “, son el principal atractivo de esta fiesta que consiste en la profusión del juego con agua, talco y mixtura. La fiesta se realiza en diversos distritos y provincias del departamento del Cusco, en especial, por el valle sagrado de los Inkas ( Pisac, Qoya, Calca, Urubamba, Lamay, Yanahuara etc.), así como por el Valle Sur (San Jerónimo, Oropesa y Canchis, donde aún se puede apreciar el famoso Carnaval de Tinta).

La Festividad de Compadres y Comadres (celebrada en los jueves anteriores al día central), es una prueba viva de que nuestras costumbres aún perduran en el transcurso del tiempo.

EMUFEC S.A. realiza el Carnaval Cusqueño en la Plaza de Armas del Cusco, con la presentación de instituciones públicas y privadas, que ofrecen lo mejor de sus danzas, comparsas y pandillas, muchas de ellas ganadoras de los diversos Festivales carnavalescos del valle Sur y Valle Sagrado de los Inkas. De igual forma, se desarrolla un festival gastronómico carnavalesco, en donde los diversos potajes y bebidas.

LA RECETA THE RECIPE

CEBICHE Plato tradicional Peruano.

La frescura del pescado y del marisco es lo que crea el cebiche. Mezclados con cebolla morada, jugo de limón, sal y un toque de ají. Acompañados del camote y el maíz. Todo un lujo que la costa peruana tiene.

Ingredientes para 4 personas: • 200 gr. De pescado de carne blanca.

• ½ cdta. De ajos molidos • 1 cdta.. De ají verde molido (amarillo o escabeche) • ½ cdta. de ají limo picadito (al gusto) • Jugo de 5 a 6 limones (2 ½ oz.)

• 1 puñado de cebolla roja cortada a la pluma • Sal y pimienta blanca.

Guarnición: • Choclo • Camote Preparación: Cortar el pescado en cubos de 3 x 3 cm. Colocarlo en un recipiente y condimentado con ajos molidos, sal, pimienta blanca, ají verde molido y ají limo picadito.

Revolver para que el pescado quede bien condimentado. Luego añadir el jugo de los limones recién exprimidos y colados. Revolver un minuto.

Antes de servir añadir la cebolla cortada a la pluma.

Servir acompañado de camote sancochado y choclo desgranado.

FISH CEBICHE

The freshness of the fish and the seafood is what creates the cebiche. Freshly caught fish and seafood mixed with purple onions, lemon juice, salt, and a touch of chili pepper. Sweet potato and corn accompany the dish. A real luxury that the Peruvian coast brings.

Ingredients for serves 4 people: • 200 gr. of white fish, cubed into 3 cm. x 3 cm. pieces • ½ tsp. blended garlic • tsp. blended aji verde pepper (aji amarillo or escabeche aji pepper) • ½ tsp. aji limo pepper, finely chopped, (to taste) • 5 or 6 key limes, juiced (2½ oz.)

• 1 handful of red onions, thinly sliced • Salt and white pepper Garnish: • ½ ear of corn, stripped • 1 sweet potato, boiled Preparation: First, place the fish in a bowl and season with the garlic, salt, white pepper, aji verde pepper and aji limo pepper.

Mix thoroughly in order for the fish to be well seasoned.

Next, add the juice of freshly squeezed and strained key limes. Mix for a minute. Before serving, add the onion.

Lastly, serve the cebiche with the sweet potato and the kernels of corn.

TIP: The fish used must be freshly caught from that day, never frozen.

PISCO SOUR

Una aventura en todos los sentidos de la palabra. El dulce, el frío y la volatilidad se mezclan en este cóctel hecho a base de pisco y limón peruanos. Un paladar sensible, un bebedor sensible y cualquier excusa es suficiente para tomar un pisco sour, ya que sólo se hace en el Perú.

An adventure in every sense of the word. The sweet, the cold and the volatile are mixed in this cocktail made out from pisco and Peruvian lemon. A sensitive palate, a sensible drinker and any excuse are enough to drink a Pisco Sour as it is only made in Perú.

Ingredientes para personas:

Pisco Sour ()

4 medidas de pisco puro Quebranta 1 medida de jarabe de goma 1 medida de jugo de limón 1 / 8 de una medida de clara de huevo 4 cubos de hielo

Ingredients serves 4 people: 4 measures of pure Quebranta pisco 1 measure of gum syrup 1 measure of key lime juice 1/8 of a measure of an egg white 4 ice cubes

Para servir: - 3 gotas de Amargo de Angostura Preparación

To serve: - 3 drops of Angostura bitters

Para preparar el Pisco Sour: Añadir el jugo de limón y el Pisco al almíbar tibio y bata fuertemente hasta que todos los ingredientes se hayan mezclado bien. Vierta la mezcla en el vaso de la licuadora y añada la cantidad de hielo suficiente hasta duplicar el volumen del líquido.

Licuar a velocidad máxima por 30 segundos aproximádamente hasta desintegrar totalmente el hielo. Añadir una clara de huevo y licuar nuevamente a velocidad máxima por 1mn.Verter todo en una jarra y servirlo inmediatamente ya sea en vasos tipo “old fashioned” o en copas de vino blanco. Tradicionalmente se añade una gota de Amargo de Angostura en la mitad de la espuma en cada vaso.

Preparation: Place all the ingredients, except for the Angostura Bitters, in the order listed above in a cocktail shaker. Shake for 15 seconds. Strain and serve in a chilled, 8 oz. cocktail glass.

Decorate the top with 3 drops of Angostura Bitters.

Bartolomé de Las Casas en su crónica “Las Antiguas Gentes Del Perú” en 1550 menciona: El Inca Pachacutec ordeno construir puentes y acequias, templos y Casas reales. Ordeno que los puentes se construyesen, por todos los ríos principales, por donde pase el camino real (mayormente por la sierra). Los cuales fueron maravillosos; de mucho artificio e ingenio.

Estos están construidos en lo más angosto de los ríos, a cada orilla del rio unos pilares anchos y altos, hechos de cal y canto o de piedra, de una lado a otro iban cinco “maromas” (Cuerda gruesa hecha de fibras vegetales) tan gruesas como el muslo de una persona, entre ellas iban los “bejucos” (plantas enredaderas, parecidas a las parras)sobre los bejucos se tejían un “cañizo” (conjunto de cañas dispuestas paralelamente y amarradas entre sí) tan ancho como una braza y media. De los lados de estos cañizos subían unas sogas muy gruesas, tejidas como una red, eran muy altas, como a la altura del pecho a manera de baranda.

Se cuenta que hasta 1850 hubo un puente colgante de los tres existentes en el Perú ubicado entre los distritos de Caycay y Andahuaylillas provincias de Paucartambo y Quispicanchis del departamento del Cusco, YUNCA PUNKU lo llamaban (entrada al valle ) formaba parte del sistema vial inca hacia el Antisuyo, donde miles de “mitimaes” (grupos de familias separadas de sus comunidades por el Imperio inca) cultivaban hojas de coca, maíz, ají entre otros productos, sabemos que los incas construyeron muchos caminos en todo el Tahuantinsuyo particularmente en el Antisuyo para poder conectar los poblados del incanato. Casi todos los relatos históricos mencionan los ingeniosos puentes colgantes que desafiaban lo agreste del terreno.

La reconstrucción de este puente comenzó el 20 de mayo del presente año, con la elaboración de las sogas hechas de fibras de Maguey utilizando para el soporte de la chilca (planta autóctona El 4 de julio se inauguró, el puente, con la asistencia de diferentes instituciones, entidades y público de diversas nacionalidades.

Hay dos accesos a el puente: Por la carretera Cusco - Piñipampa- Sicuani, desvío de un camino de herradura de 2km. siguiendo el curso del rio Vilcanota y el otro acceso por la carretera Cusco – Huambutio – Caycay, desvío de un camino de herradura de 1.5km. Siguiendo también el curso del Rio Vilcanota.

La restauración ha sido gracias la iniciativa del Lic. Roger Valencia, Municipalidades Causan Willcamayu (Municipalidades Caycay-Huaro-Andahuaylillas), Instituto Nacional de Cultura (INC) y la Dirección Regional de Comercio Exterior y Turismo del Gobierno Regional y participación activa de los pobladores de la zona.

BRIDGE BETWEEN TWO WORLDS THE MAGIC OF LIVING CULTURE. The vast majority of stories written by the early chroniclers in the Andes, mentioned these wonderful suspension bridges that appeared to be an entrance to another world. They were surprised by the ingenuity of the Incas and their ability to dominate and overcome all obstacles relating to different ecological landscapes, which allowed them to unite the TAHUANTINSUYO and thus develop a structure for the Inca culture.

Bartolomé de Las Casas in his article “The Ancient People of Peru” in 1550 states: The Inca Pachacutec ordered to construction of bridges and canals, temples and royal houses. He also ordered the building of bridges over all major rivers, where the main Inca trails pass (mostly in the mountain areas).

These structures were wonderful, skillfully and cleverly constructed. These bridges are built along the narrow parts of the rivers, each bank of the river had piers made of lime stone or local stones. Connecting these 02 piers were five “maromas” (thick rope made of natural fibers) as thick as a person’s muscle, between them were the “bejucos” (climbing or trailing plants, like grapevines) over the vines were weavings of “cañizo” (set of rods arranged in parallel form and tied to each other) as wide as a “braza y media” ancient measuring system equal to 2.5 meters. The sides of the bridges were made of very thick ropes, woven like a net, and were quite high, with the railing at chest height.

Over the flooring of the bridge they would add plenty of green herbs, such as hemp, they would lay it on very thick to withstand the weight of those who would use it, men, women, children, animals (sheep, goats) and what is more, the Spaniards and their horses.

It is thought that until 1850 one of the three “hanging” bridges still existing in Peru was located between the district of Caycay and Andahuaylillas, in the provinces of Paucartambo and Quispicanchis (Region of Cusco). The bridge was called YUNCA PUNKU (entrance of the valley) and formed part of the Inca network of roads of Antisuyo. There, thousands of “mitimaes” (groups of families separated from their communities by the Inca rulers) cultivated coca leaves, corn and “aji” amongst others products. We know that the Incas built many roads all over the Tahuantinsuyo Empire–and especially in the Antisuyo sector- in order to be able to connect the populated areas of the empire. Almost all the historical accounts available mention these skillfully constructed bridges which challenged the wilderness of the territory.

The reconstruction of this bridge began on the 20th of May of this year (2010) with the fabrication of the thick cords done with Maguey fiber, used to support the chilca On the 4th of July the bridge was inaugurated, with the support and presence of different institutions and public entities, along with visitors from different nations.

There are two ways to reach the bridge: one is by driving along the road Cusco - Piñipampa- Sicuani, and taking a small dirt path detour for 2km and following the river Vilcanota; the second is found along the Cusco – Huambutio – Caycay road, by entering the dirt path detour available and following the Vilcanota river for 1.5 km, you will eventually reach it.

The restoration of the bridge was possible thanks to the initiative of Roger Valencia, the City Councils of Causan Willcamayu (Joint City Councils of Caycay-Huaro-Andahuaylillas), the National institute of Culture (Instituto Nacional de Cultura - INC) and Cusco’s Dirección Regional de Comercio Exterior y Turismo del Gobierno Regional with the active participation of the local people.
