SMALL BUSINESS TIPS TO LAUNCH AND THRIVE

Running a small business is one of the most challenging journeys you can embark on, according to those in the know.

“Being a small business owner within an everchanging landscape can feel intimidating without support,” says Michelle Van Slyke, senior vice president of sales and marketing at The UPS Store, Inc.

SIMPLIFY CORRESPONDENCE

Consider using a private mailbox rental, so you can give your small business a real street address, as well as establish a central location to pick up mail and packages. Consider a mailbox service that offers package acceptance from all carriers, receipt confirmation, mail forwarding and holding, and easy delivery updates.

GET OUT THE WORD

With more than 5,100 locations across North America, The UPS Store network comprises the nation’s largest franchise system of retail shipping, postal, print and business service centers, and is leveraging its expertise to offer new and seasoned entrepreneurs these tips to help their small business thrive:

FIND A ONE-STOP SHOP

One of the first steps in creating a business is sending out paperwork for the business formation and acquiring the licenses or permits needed. Save time and effort by using a one-stop small business services shop to have documents notarized, faxed, copied, scanned and securely shredded.

Be sure to regularly let your customers and prospective customers know when you’ve added new products and services to your portfolio with both print and digital marketing. Update the company website, blog and social media channels regularly and be sure to use tried-and-true methods of promotion as well, like direct mail services. The UPS Store, which can help you design, print and mail postcards, flyers and other marketing materials, offers two direct mail options, one that provides total market coverage, and another, more targeted option to reach a specific list of customers.

DON’T PAY FULL PRICE FOR BUSINESS SERVICES

Some vendors may have discounts for qualifying businesses, so be sure to inquire about that. You can also access deals and promotions on packing, shipping, logistics management, printing, marketing consultation, secure mailboxes and more by joining The UPS Store email program.

GET INSPIRED BY THE WORK OF OTHER SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS

The UPS Store and Inc. Magazine are teaming up to host the 2023 Small Biz Challenge, which offers an opportunity for entrepreneurs to win up to $25,000, one-on-one mentoring with a business expert, an editorial feature in an upcoming issue of Inc. Magazine and Inc.com, and a trip to the final event in New York City. Recognizing the inspiring business skills and expertise of entrepreneurs since

2019, this year’s competition required entrepreneurs to demonstrate their unique problem-solving skills and innovative thinking.

“Every day we see entrepreneurs overcome obstacles on their path to success. Our goal was to find the most unstoppable business owners across the country,” says Van Slyke.

To learn more about this year’s contest, visit https:// www.theupsstore.com/smallbizchallenge.

For more tips and resources, visit The UPS Store small business blog at: https://www.theupsstore. com/small-business-services/small-business-blog. Running a small business presents new challenges every day. However, finding the right resources can help you focus on the big picture, so you can grow your business and see your vision through.

Old Folks Saying NOT TODAY, SATAN

The term has been widely used in the Black community as a staple for not letting the enemy or anyone get you down. Think of the times you’ve been tested with a trial or a thorn in the bush. Although it’s temporary, our human emotions remind us that we simply don’t have the time for an additional problem or want to avoid mishaps altogether. As far as who coined the term? The internet is convinced that Bianca Del Rio from RuPaul’s “Drag Race” originated the term. However, we’re convinced she got it from somebody’s grandmother. How do you respond when things don’t immediately go your way?

HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR BUSINESS’S FINANCIAL HEALTH WITH DETAILED MANAGEMENT

As a business owner, you know that maintaining a healthy financial status is crucial to the success of your company. But how can you ensure that your business is on the right track? The answer lies in detailed financial management.

By keeping a close eye on your revenue, expenses, and cash flow, you can make informed decisions that will help you improve your bottom line and grow your business. In this article, we’ll explore some practical tips and strategies that you can implement to enhance your business’s financial health.

From creating a budget to monitoring your financial statements, you’ll discover the key steps that will enable you to take control of your finances and achieve long-term success. So, let’s dive in and explore the world of financial management!

CREATE A DETAILED BUSINESS PLAN

Develop a comprehensive business plan that outlines your company’s goals, target market, revenue projections, and expenses. A well-thought-out plan will serve as a roadmap and help you make informed financial decisions.

SEPARATE PERSONAL AND BUSINESS FINANCES

Open a separate business bank account to keep your personal and business finances separate. This will make accounting and tax reporting much more manageable and ensure you can track business expenses accurately.

MONITOR CASH FLOW

Cash flow management is vital for any business. Monitor your cash flow regularly to ensure you have enough funds to cover operational expenses, investments, and growth.

BUDGET WISELY

Create a budget that accounts for all expenses, including fixed costs (rent, utilities) and variable costs (inventory, marketing). Stick to the budget and identify areas where you can cut costs if needed.

BUILD AN EMERGENCY FUN

Set aside funds for unexpected emergencies or slow periods. An emergency fund can help your business weather challenging times without resorting to high-interest loans or credit.

MANAGE DEBT WISELY

If you need to take on debt, do so strategically and responsibly. Understand the terms and interest rates, and only borrow what you can comfortably repay.

EMBRACE TECHNOLOGY AND AUTOMATION

Utilize financial software and tools to streamline your accounting processes, invoicing, and expense tracking. Automation can save time and reduce the chances of errors.

DIVERSIFY REVENUE STREAMS

Avoid relying too heavily on one source of income. Look for opportunities to diversify your revenue streams, which can help protect your business during economic downturns.

INVEST IN MARKETING

Allocate a portion of your budget to marketing and advertising efforts. Effective marketing can help you reach a broader audience and attract more customers.

SEEK PROFESSIONAL ADVICE

Don’t hesitate to seek help from financial advisors, accountants, or business consultants. They can provide valuable insights and guidance to improve your business’s financial health.

NETWORK AND COLLABORATE

Connect with other black business owners and entrepreneurs in your community. Collaborating and networking can lead to new opportunities and partnerships that can benefit your business.

REMEMBER THAT FINANCIAL SUCCESS TAKES TIME AND DEDICATION. STAY PERSISTENT, ADAPT TO CHANGING CIRCUMSTANCES, AND CONTINUOUSLY EDUCATE YOURSELF ABOUT FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT AND BUSINESS STRATEGIES.

By managing your finances effectively, you’ll be better positioned to achieve your business goals and contribute to the growth and prosperity of your community.

VICE PRESIDENT KAMALA HARRIS JOINS IN CELEBRATING DR. FREDERICK D. HAYNES, III AS THE NEW HEAD OF RAINBOW PUSH COALITION

Rev. Jesse Jackson made an official announcement regarding the appointment of Dr. Frederick Douglass Haynes, III, as the new President and CEO of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition. This transition of leadership occurred during the organization's national convention at the Apostolic Church of God in Woodlawn.

President Joe Biden commended Rev. Jackson for his many years of leadership and expressed his appreciation as he handed over the reins to the next generation. Vice President Kamala Harris also spoke at the event, honoring Rev. Jackson for his guidance and expressing her confidence in Dr. Haynes as the new leader of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition.

Vice President Harris shared her joy in congratulating Reverend Dr. Freddy Haynes, highlighting their long standing collaboration dating back to their involvement in the early stages of the criminal justice reform movement. She expressed her confidence in Dr. Haynes' ability to uphold the organization's values and tackle the challenges of the current moment.

“It is my joy to congratulate Reverend Dr. Freddy Haynes. I have known him and worked with him for over 20 years, including when we worked together years and years ago in the early days of the criminal justice reform movement,” she said during her remarks.

“Rainbow PUSH has been the organizational vehicle that he has driven in the movement for justice. I am honored and humbled that he has “tapped” me to serve as his successor as the President and CEO of this great organization. Rev. Jackson has been a mentor and I have been greatly influenced and inspired by this gamechanging social justice general, international ambassador for human rights, and prophetic genius. Sadly, justice and human rights are under attack in the nation and around the world. The work of Rainbow PUSH is as necessary as ever and I am committed to standing on the shoulders of Rev. Jackson and continuing the fight for freedom, peace, equity, justice and human rights.”

Aside from his new role at the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, Dr. Frederick D. Haynes, III, serves as the senior pastor of Friendship-West Baptist Church, a large congregation in Dallas, Texas, boasting over 13,000 members. While Dr. Haynes recently appointed Pastor David McGruder as the Executive Pastor of FriendshipWest, he will continue his responsibilities as the senior pastor.

“Rev. Jesse Jackson has made the world a better place, breaking down barriers, opening previously locked doors of opportunity, fighting for justice and refusing to take “no” for an answer on behalf of those who have no voice,” said Dr. Haynes.

Dr. Haynes is best known as a social justice pastor and advocate for marginalized communities. Known nationally as “the drum major for justice,” he has modeled his ministry like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., focused on the intersections of faith and justice. Dr. Haynes works diligently to stand up for justice and to create positive change nationally.

From leading protests and demonstrations, to registering thousands of voters, to providing food and other needed resources, to decreasing crime, to serving as a voting super center, Dr. Haynes and Friendship-West Baptist Church have always been in the forefront of creating positive and lasting social change.

Dr. Haynes holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religion and English, a Master of Divinity degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary as well as a Doctorate in Ministry from the Graduate Theological Foundation where he was afforded the opportunity to study at Christ Church, Oxford University in England. Currently, Dr. Haynes is a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) candidate at the Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis, Indiana where he is studying African American preaching and sacred rhetoric.

He also serves in the academic arena, teaching college courses and workshops at Paul Quinn College, Texas Christian University, McCormick Theological Seminary, New Brunswick Theological Seminary, and other institutions of higher learning. Dr. Haynes also serves on the Board of Trustees for Paul Quinn College as well as various other boards, particularly those in underserved and minority communities. Dr. Haynes is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

A life-long learner, Dr. Haynes is committed to education and has led FriendshipWest to donate over $1 million dollars to historically Black colleges and universities. In addition, Friendship-West has donated over $2 million in scholarship aid to students who are members of the church and the greater Dallas community. Dr. Haynes is the namesake of the Dr. Frederick D. Haynes, III Global Preparatory School, located on the campus of Paul Quinn College, which serves students grades 6-12 who seek to enter the International Baccalaureate program.

Dr. Haynes has received numerous awards and honors for his ministry and activism. In 2011, Dr. Haynes had the prestigious honor of being the featured speaker at The Congressional Black Caucus’ Annual Prayer Breakfast. In 2012, Ebony Magazine named him to its Power 100 list of most influential African Americans.

He was also inducted into the National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame. In 2013, Dr. Haynes was honored to give remarks at the memorial service of one of the most respected world leaders of the 20th and 21st centuries, President Nelson Mandela. In 2016, Dr. Haynes was inducted into the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame. In 2020, Dr. Haynes was a featured speaker during the Democratic National Convention’s faith event, “Our Values, Our Voices, Our Votes.”

The prestigious April 4th Foundation awarded Dr. Haynes the I am a Man Award in 2020 and he joined the ranks of past honorees that include Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Diane Nash, Congressman John Lewis, and Harry Belafonté. In 2022, Dr. Haynes was awarded by President Joseph R. Biden Jr., the Joseph R. Biden Jr. Presidential Lifetime Achievement Leadership Award in Community Service. As a reflection of his commitment to community transformation and social consciousness, Dr. Haynes serves in various leadership capacities in organizations that champion social change and education. In 2003, he founded the Samuel DeWitt Proctor Conference along with Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. and Dr. Iva E. Carruthers and currently serves as co-chairman of the board. Dr. Haynes is on the board of the Conference of National Black Churches, the National Action Network, and the IC3 Church Growth and Development Conference.

EMPOWERING BLACK STUDENTS: HOW HAIR PRODUCT VENDING MACHINES ARE BRIDGING THE GAP AT REMOTE COLLEGES

lacks a reliable selection of products for Black hair.

“The only time I was able to go to the beauty supply store was when I went home or if one of my friends were going to the beauty supply store and I would tag along with them,” said Kelley, who is a senior studying business administration.

Kelley typically had to wait until she went home or tag along with friends who were visiting a beauty supply store. However, she recently discovered Thee Beauty Genie, a company that offers vending machines stocked with Black hair care items, such as edge control and deep conditioner.

This vending machine will be stocked with a variety of Black hair care items, including bonnets and combs. While the initial Beauty Genie machine was recently placed in a train station in Chicago, the founders of the company recognized the need to serve Black students at remote colleges.

These students often struggle to find personal care products specifically tailored to their hair needs. Although retailers like Walmart, which are commonly found in small towns and college towns, do carry some hair care products, Quintella Rodgers, co-founder of Beauty Genie, explained that many of these products are not suitable for Black hair.

In addition to the beauty products, the vending machines showcase brief videos featuring experienced hair stylists discussing various aspects of hair care and recommending the most suitable products for different hair types.

Rahya Kelley, a student at Olivet College, not only attends classes and participates in her cheerleading squad, but she also offers her hair styling services to Black students on campus.

However, Kelley faces difficulties in obtaining the necessary hair care products for Black hair, as Olivet, Michigan, is located in a relatively remote area. While there is a Walmart 12 miles away, it often

Kelley, along with other students in the Hiram Archer Student Success Academy, worked to bring a Beauty Genie vending machine to Olivet College, making it the first college campus to host one. This initiative aims to address the difficulty Black students face in finding suitable hair care products in remote college towns. The H A S S A serves as a mentorship program for students of color at Olivet College where 18.1% of students are Black.

Beginning on August 1st, Olivet College will become the first college campus to feature a Beauty Genie vending machine.

In fact, they can even cause damage or breakage. Rodgers, who also owns Thee Hair Bar in Blue Island, Illinois, mentioned that many of her college student clients wait until school breaks to style their hair.

“I think oftentimes, we don’t have many options,” Karim said. That’s why “being comfortable wearing our hair naturally, not having to always straighten it, being able to purchase products that we don’t have to either travel a long distance for or we don’t have to order them online and wait for them to be shipped” is at the core of the company’s mission, she added.

TIPS TO BUILD A STABLE, SUSTAINABLE FINANCIAL FUTURE FOR YOUR FAMILY ACCUMULATE

The first, and one of the most challenging steps, is saving for your future while covering basic expenses. Establishing and working toward defined financial goals in the short-, medium- and long-term is a good place to start. Also, understanding your money mindset can help you identify opportunities to create healthier spending and saving habits.

Over time, it’s important for you to position yourself to take advantage of opportunities to raise your income. Consider discussing a raise with your current employer, taking a job opportunity with higher pay or starting a side business to supplement your income. You should also begin to build an emergency fund, which will better position you to weather unexpected financial emergencies. In general, you should save enough in this fund to cover three to six months of your typical monthly expenses.

Swanzetta Lewis, a managing partner and braider at Rodgers' salon for the past four years, stated that the Beauty Genie team aims to provide students with valuable information that they can easily apply to their own hair care routines. “Some students may have not even experienced or even know certain things like possibly how often to get their ends clipped,” Lewis said. “And so, if we can provide tutorials for those kids to take back and know that, it’s also educational for them as well.”

“We’ve been receiving amazing feedback,” Karim said. “I think it’s only just a matter of time before more colleges jump on board.”

Building wealth is not as easy as it sounds. It can take time, discipline and a plan to keep those dollars protected. However, if done correctly, it can provide security for your family for years to come. No matter where you are in your personal financial journey, there are steps you can take to help build a financially secure future. Although your approach should be personalized to your specific situation, Freddie Mac suggests building your plan on three main pillars: accumulate, preserve and protect what you’ve built.

In addition, if you are financially prepared for it, purchasing a home can help you build wealth in ways that renting cannot.

PRESERVE

Once you’ve begun to accumulate wealth, the next step is preserving it. You can accomplish this by protecting and growing your money over time.

Managing your debts and expenses is paramount. Pay down debts in high-interest accounts and prioritize other expenses that require immediate attention.

Your credit score is a critical part of this equation, and the time to improve it is right now. A strong credit score can help you receive a better interest rate and loan terms

when working with lenders, as well as provide a host of other long-term benefits.

PROTECT

Lastly, you should have a plan in place to eventually transfer the wealth you’ve built to family and loved ones. CNBC reports that an estimated $68 trillion will be passed down from the baby boomer generation between 2019 and 2044. Having an estate plan can give you peace of mind that your assets will be allocated according to your wishes when the time comes.

In the meantime, you should also protect your assets from the unexpected. In addition to taking steps to safeguard your property from natural disasters, you should invest in a comprehensive renter or homeowner insurance policy. And always be mindful of the wide variety of scammers and hackers looking to access your resources.

Education has power. As you begin your journey, you can build your financial savviness with Freddie Mac CreditSmart Essentials, a suite of free education tools and information covering topics like how to buy a home or car, how to improve credit and how to build wealth.

To learn more, visit creditsmart.freddiemac.com.

Building wealth doesn’t happen overnight. With consistency and commitment, and the right knowledge and mindset, you can create a stable future for you and your loved ones.

HBCUs Revamping Admissions Policies AMID AFFIRMATIVE ACTION DECISION

In the wake of the Supreme Court’s recent decision to end affirmative action in college admissions, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have taken steps to adapt their admissions policies.

With the expected increase in applicants, HBCUs reportedly are gearing up to become more selective, aiming to maintain the quality of education they provide. Last month’s ruling by the high court, which prohibits colleges from considering race during the admissions process, has sent ripples through the academic landscape. For many universities, affirmative action has been crucial for fostering diversity and inclusion.

While not entirely unexpected, the decision poses a significant challenge to HBCUs, which have historically played a pivotal role in educating Black graduates and promoting racial diversity.

The Root reported that HBCU leaders anticipate a surge in applications from students seeking environments that encourage open discussions about race during the admissions process.

The schools have long served as bastions of support for Black students, especially in the face of systemic challenges like underfunding, housing shortages, and aging infrastructure.

Compared to predominantly white institutions, The Root noted that HBCUs have also struggled with subpar cybersecurity measures and limited WiFi access, further adding to their uphill battle.

“If our applicant pool doubles, we could not double our student body without seriously compromising the quality of our education,” David A. Thomas, the President of Atlanta’s prestigious Morehouse College, told the outlet. With Morehouse College expecting a significant surge in applications over the next three years, maintaining its commitment to providing an economically diverse student body is at the forefront of its agenda, Thomas asserted.

To combat some aspects of the Supreme Court’s ruling, Aminta Hawkins Breaux, President of Bowie State University, suggested the inclusion of an essay component in admission applications as a possible measure. She said that approach would allow students to reflect on their experiences and articulate the importance of race in their lives and aspirations.

Meanwhile, Morgan State University’s Admissions officials reportedly are contemplating using essay prompts or letters of recommendation to encourage applicants to engage in meaningful discussions about race.

As the spotlight shines brightly on HBCUs after the affirmative action verdict, officials at those schools maintain that they are determined to rise to the challenge and continue their commitment to fostering diverse, inclusive, and intellectually stimulating environments.

Howard University President Wayne A.I. Frederick, said in a nationally televised interview.

“We represent only 3% of the higher [education] institutions, but we are responsible for 25% of the bachelor’s degrees,” he said. Frederick called the court’s decision, “unfortunate.”

He added that, “By not allowing race to be considered in admissions elsewhere, you can put an even more outsized burden on historically Black colleges and universities who don’t have the capacity to carry that type of a burden.”

Frederick further acknowledged that HBCUs admissions decisions now will become more complicated.

“Obviously, we all are going to be kind of avoiding lawsuits, and so trying to have a very sterile process,” he asserted.

“It is going to be almost impossible, and trying to create one is going to be far more difficult today given this ruling. So, I think that we are all going to have to look at the rules very carefully.”

Finally, Fredrick told CNN that the ruling could put an additional burden on HBCUs to produce more graduates to work in various industries and set up institutions to worry about legal challenges that could be presented over admissions.

“So, it is going to be a road that is going to require a lot more resources. I think that for institutions that don’t have as many resources could be blindsided by lawsuits about this,” Frederick said.

12 STRATEGIES FOR OVERCOMING NEGATIVE BODY IMAGE POSTPARTUM

Getting your body back post-pregnancy is a journey that requires patience, dedication, and a focus on overall health and well-being. Here are some tips to help you get started on your postpartum fitness and wellness journey:

1. Consult with a Healthcare Professional: Before starting any postpartum fitness regimen, consult with your healthcare provider to ensure you are medically cleared for exercise. They can provide personalized advice based on your individual circumstances.

2. Start Slowly: It's essential to give your body time to recover after childbirth. Begin with gentle activities like walking and pelvic floor exercises. Gradually increase the intensity and duration of your workouts as you feel stronger.

3. Incorporate Core Strengthening Exercises: Pregnancy can weaken the abdominal muscles and pelvic floor. Focus on core-strengthening exercises, such as pelvic tilts and gentle abdominal exercises, to help regain core strength.

4. Engage in Postnatal Exercises: Many fitness programs cater specifically to postnatal recovery. Look for postnatal exercise classes or videos that focus on restoring pelvic health, core strength, and overall fitness.

5. Eat a Balanced Diet: Focus on a balanced and nutritious diet to support your postpartum recovery and overall health. Include plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains.

6. Stay Hydrated: Drinking an adequate amount of water is essential, especially if you're breastfeeding. Aim to stay hydrated throughout the day.

7. Prioritize Sleep: Rest is crucial for postpartum recovery. Try to nap when your baby sleeps, and create a relaxing bedtime routine to improve sleep quality.

8. Consider Breastfeeding Benefits: Breastfeeding can help with weight loss as it burns extra calories. However, remember that it's essential to consume enough nutrients to support both you and your baby.

11. Join Postpartum Support Groups: Connecting with other new moms can provide emotional support and practical tips for postpartum recovery.

9. Involve Your Baby: Include your baby in your workouts when possible. Babywearing during walks or doing gentle exercises with your baby can be a fun bonding experience.

10. Be Kind to Yourself: Remember that your body has gone through significant changes during pregnancy, and it's normal to take time to regain strength and fitness. Avoid comparing yourself to others and celebrate your progress along the way.

12. Set Realistic Goals: Focus on feeling healthy and strong rather than striving for a specific appearance. Set realistic and achievable goals to avoid putting unnecessary pressure on yourself. Always listen to your body and be patient with yourself throughout your postpartum journey. It's essential to remember that each woman's experience is unique, so embrace your individual progress and focus on taking care of both your physical and mental well-being. If you experience any pain or discomfort during exercise, consult with a healthcare professional.

LIVING WITH COPD? HOW TO NAVIGATE PALLIATIVE AND HOSPICE CARE

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is also referred to as emphysema or chronic bronchitis and makes it hard to breathe. During every stage of the disease, starting when a person is first diagnosed, different supportive care options are available that can improve quality of life, including palliative and hospice care.

It’s important for families affected by COPD to have a plan in place regarding these care options. Having trusted tools and information can make getting the conversation started with healthcare providers easier.

That’s why the American Lung Association, in partnership with Embassy Health, has launched a new campaign to educate patients and families about the benefits and differences of palliative and hospice care.

PALLIATIVE CARE

Palliative care provides specialized medical care for people living with a chronic or serious illness. Surprisingly

to many patients, it’s appropriate at any stage of COPD. Early delivery of palliative care has the potential to reduce unnecessary hospital admissions and the use of health services. In fact, it’s never too soon after a COPD diagnosis to ask a healthcare provider about adding in palliative care.

The intent of palliative care for those living with COPD is to improve their condition, manage symptoms and address their wishes and treatment goals. These services are often provided by a team of palliative care specialist doctors and nurses, social workers, nutritionists and spiritual advisers, and can take place in the home, a hospital, outpatient clinic, assisted living facility, nursing home or palliative care center.

HOSPICE CARE

When curative treatment options stop working, it’s often referred to as endstage or advanced COPD. This can be an extremely difficult time for patients and families, and a time where they need to make difficult decisions.

One treatment option for advanced COPD is hospice care. Hospice care focuses on bringing comfort and relief to a person with life-limiting COPD who has opted to no longer

seek curative treatment. The goal is to consider the patient’s overall wellbeing and improve their quality of their life. While many worry it’s too soon to start talking about hospice care, many patients discover that it comprises much more than end-of-life care.

check-ins, chaplain visits, and inhome healthcare so that she doesn’t have to travel to numerous medical appointments. This level of support has allowed her to focus her time and energy on her family and her favorite hobby, baking.

“I am living at home, and I can do as I please and hospice is helping me do it,” Carolynne says. “It’s just a different style of living; you are living with help.”

As she learned more, she began to understand that hospice encompasses supportive in-home care that could help prevent hospitalizations with another COPD flare-up. Carolynne’s hospice care includes assistance with showers and medication, weekly nurse

Hospice care is delivered by a multidisciplinary team that can consist of nurses, doctors, social workers, spiritual advisors and trained volunteers. KIDS HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT THEIR BODIES, NOW YOU HAVE ANSWERS

Children have a lot of questions about the way the world works and parents hope to have straightforward answers. But when it comes to questions regarding the body, parents and kids alike can find these conversations awkward, uncomfortable and embarrassing. Experts say that destigmatizing a child’s curiosity about their body will not only help them take better care of their health, it may even spark their interest in science.

“Kids have so many questions about their bodies, some practical, some pure curiosity. Sadly, society sometimes chastises children for even asking these questions. By better understanding their bodies though, they can adopt good habits that stay with them for life, and learn about physics and biology in a fun way,” says David L. Hu, Ph.D., a professor at Georgia Institute of Technology and author of “The P Word: A Manual for Mammals.”

Dr. Hu, an award-winning scientist, animal expert and author, wrote “The P Word” for his 10-year old son, who like many children his age, is eager to learn more about his body. While previous books dealing with this topic are written with teenagers in mind, Dr. Hu believes it’s important for younger kids to enter puberty already having all the facts about their biology. His book, meant for ages 7-12, introduces the penis as an organ that unites all biologically male mammals. It’s meant to serve as a gender-neutral, definitive resource about the penis for kids, providing tools kids need to recognize and name their body parts, understand when something might be wrong and practice good hygiene.

If you’re a parent of a curious kid, or a parent of a child who hasn’t yet voiced their questions, Dr. Hu offers the following tips:

1. Try not to shy away from these conversations or make your child feel ashamed for asking a question about their body. Keep in mind that many children will turn to the internet for answers if you aren’t open to answering their questions, where they may encounter false information or inappropriate content. Instead, acknowledge their curiosity by answering their questions as best you can, and by pointing them to trustworthy resources.

2. Don’t wait until your child reaches puberty. If you start talking to kids about their bodies when they are young, you’ll normalize and desensitize the subject, and the act of talking about it. Helping a child feel comfortable in their own skin before things start to change, will set the stage for less stress during puberty.

3. Help kids understand that their body is natural and normal. In “The P Word,” Dr. Hu intentionally presents colorful, engaging images and facts about different mammals around the globe alongside information about human bodies, including how animals use their penises to pee, mark their territory and reproduce. “Comparative biology makes learning fun and amusing, lightens the mood around a serious subject, helps young kids understand their place in nature, and offers insights into the role of their penis or vagina outside the role of sex,” says Dr. Hu.

A valuable resource for parents, librarians, educators and of course, kids, more information about “The P-Word” can be found by visiting sciencenaturally.com/ product-page/the-p-word-a-manual-for-mammals.

“My hope is that kids realize that every question they have, no matter how embarrassing it is, can be addressed by the tools of science. They should be proud of being curious about their own bodies,” Dr. Hu.

The mission of Winners Circle Group of Texas (WCGT) is to offer innovative and effective programs that empower special needs individuals, both children and adults, as well as their families, to succeed. Their primary goal is to deliver top-notch mental health services, enabling individuals to develop their strengths and live healthy, productive lives.

During a meeting with the founders of Winners Circle Group, Mack Montgomery and Reggie Barnes, it is evident that their primary focus is on fostering the growth of individuals, particularly young men, women, and adults while prioritizing success. Their aim is to create a pathway toward a better quality of life for those facing challenging circumstances beyond their control. The organization’s practices are distinctive, but there are individuals who lack knowledge about WCGT, its activities, and the extent of its care services. During a personal interview with Montgomery, we discovered a multitude of initiatives focused on mental health, foster care, and other areas.

Reggie Barnes, with his extensive 30 years of experience in mental health services, established Winner’s Circle.

The Winners Circle Group of Texas:

Addressing Mental Health for Children and Young Adults

Drawing upon this expertise, he formulated his vision for the organization. Having previously founded similar companies in North Carolina and Virginia, Barnes and I reconnected four years ago to bring this vision to Texas. Through thorough research, relationship-building, and extensive planning, we have reached the point we are at today.

MENTAL HEALTH STATISTICS IN THE U.S. REPORTS

Texas has a severe shortage of child and adolescent psychiatric care providers, leaving many children untreated. Mental health disorders and behavioral problems are much more common among children in the U.S. than they were previously thought to be. According to the Health Resources and Services Administration, between 2016 and 2020 there was a 29% increase in children ages 3-17 diagnosed with anxiety and 27% increase in those diagnosed with depression. This equates to about 7.7 million children annually, per UT Health School of Public Health.

Q&A

THE WINNERS

HOW DOES WINNERS CIRCLE TRAIN EMPLOYERS TO ADDRESS MENTAL HEALTH CONCERNS?

We have an internal training structure that ensures our qualified mental health professionals are fully qualified in accordance with Texas state regulations before they begin working with clients. Moreover, we provide additional training to effectively serve the children in foster care that we work with. New hires are given opportunities to shadow experienced professionals to ensure their comfort when engaging with clients. The Winners Circle specializes in offering programs designed to enhance the lives of special needs children and adults, promoting their overall well-being.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR ENROLLING A CHILD OR ADULT IN ONE OF YOUR EXISTING PROGRAMS?

To enroll in our program, children must have a preexisting diagnosis. Our licensed clinicians can provide a diagnosis following a referral for a comprehensive biopsychosocial evaluation. Additionally, we are a preferred provider of Superior insurance, meaning that any child with a diagnosis and Superior insurance can qualify for our program.

IS THERE A GREATER PROPORTION OF ADULTS REQUIRING ASSISTANCE COMPARED TO CHILDREN?

The demand for mental healthcare among adults is substantial. However, our focus has primarily been on children. Currently, we cater to individuals aged 3-21. With over 15,000 children in foster care and a significant number of children who have been adopted, our efforts have been concentrated on meeting this specific need. Nevertheless, adults are not disregarded. As we continue to expand, our intention is to introduce adult services into our program.

The effectiveness of special needs programs can vary significantly depending on various factors, including the type of program, the specific needs of the children, the resources available, and the level of parental involvement. PROVIDE US WITH MORE INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR PROGRAM(S), INCLUDING THE FOCUS AND THE EFFECTIVENESS YOU HAVE OBSERVED AS EVIDENCE OF THE GROUP’S SUCCESS.

Our program centers on building relationships. We believe that the time spent with children is an invaluable resource. By following a calculated individual service plan, we have witnessed remarkable success stories. Our approach has resulted in a decrease in problem behaviors across all areas that we serve. Additionally, our wraparound approach to supporting foster families has proven to be effective, as we connect them with a wide range of community resources. We are committed to further helping the community through various activities. One of our goals is to see the children graduate from high school and continue their education.

HOW DO YOU DEFINE “SUCCESS” AND HAVE YOU ESTABLISHED SPECIFIC CRITERIA FOR MEASURING IT?

Success can take many forms. For us, it means seeing children with challenging behaviors graduate from high school. It means enabling them to attend and participate in school without having to be sent to alternative programs. It means being able to aid in resolution in crisis situations. Success also involves equipping foster homes with necessary resources that would otherwise go untouched, as well as helping children open up to moving past trauma and rebuilding trust. Moreover, we consider it a success when we can find stable placements for ‘high-level’ children who would otherwise be moved from one place to another.

If I’m not winning, I’m learning.

CAN YOU DESCRIBE THE DIFFICULTIES YOU HAVE FACED THAT MAY HAVE CAUSED DOUBTS AND REQUIRED YOU TO REASSESS YOUR APPROACH?

We have not encountered any challenges that would lead us to doubt our passion for helping young people or the need for mental health services. However, some of the challenges we have faced include foster parents who are hesitant to fully embrace our program, case managers or organizations that are consumed by their day-to-day responsibilities and only send referrals when a crisis occurs, and overall skepticism towards mental health practices. Some foster homes perceive our presence as burdensome, considering the multiple entities already involved in their lives. However, we have been able to overcome this by explaining our purpose and emphasizing our support for their households. Another challenge stems from the overwhelming number of children in foster care, leading to overloaded case managers and agencies with high turnover rates. As a result, there may be a lack of follow-through in sending referrals and initiating services for the youth. Mental health is a crucial aspect of our organization’s advocacy.

Montgomery says working with the company has helped change his level of empathy, “I’ve always been passionate about helping people. I think that one thing that has changed about me is not being so quick to judge. I try not to judge people anyway because the Bible says not to judge people. But I think sometimes we inherently do judge people based on maybe what they look like and experiences they went through,” he said.

WHAT DO YOU WANT THE AUDIENCE TO KNOW ABOUT THE WINNERS CIRCLE, FROM YOUR PERSPECTIVE, AND WHY IS IT A GREAT PLACE TO SEEK HELP AND ASSISTANCE?

For the clients that come into our care, we provide individual service plans, so we work on every kid as an individual. It’s not a group, it’s not any of that. We don’t use the same method in any given situation because everybody has different things that they need to work on. We have baselines in which we do that, but through our individual service plans, we can meet the need of any diagnosis that a child has. So, from the client side, I want the audience to know that.

IF YOU COULD PICK A QUOTE THAT DESCRIBES THE WCGT, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

I think the connotation speaks for itself. But if I wanted to say a quote, there’s no losing. Reggie always says, if I’m not winning, I’m learning. So that’s really what we kind of base the company off of because anything that goes wrong is a learning experience, any sort of problem, so there are no losses. They’re just learning experiences. I think by having that mindset and just being more solution-based, we can solve problems as opposed to just soaking in the negative.

The company’s focus on mental health and fostering youth and young adults doesn’t stop there. With a recent conference under their belt, Montgomery detailed the event saying, “We had consistent fixtures of male role models.” As for young ladies, sex trafficking and domestic abuse are just a few of the cases the company takes on in addition to children (young adults) being removed from their homes.

“I’m very mindful to be empathetic towards their circumstance because it had to be a reason that they got into foster care. They had to be removed from their homes because of something bad that happened,” he said. “Something that the state deemed they needed to investigate, and it was bad enough for them to go into foster care. I’m very mindful of kids’ previous experiences, more so than I ever was because you just never know what a kid has been through.”

WCGT is dedicated to delivering excellent service and is committed to supporting individuals and families seeking stability and nourishment.

The company currently operates in four Texas citiesHouston, Midland, Duncanville, and Tyler - with plans for expansion. For further details on their efforts to assist those in need, please visit: www.WinnersCircleGroupOfTexas.com.

But one thing that I have learned is that you never know what that child has been through. To me, it doesn’t matter the behaviors that they’re exhibiting at this moment. We don’t know the backstory. We know what people might have said the backstory was, but nobody’s been with that child for 24 hours/7 days a week.

BLACK WOMEN FACE DIRE CONSEQUENCES WHEN UNEMPLOYMENT RATES RISE

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the impact was particularly pronounced among Black women, especially those working in the public sector.

In a setback to the progress made in narrowing the racial unemployment gap, an increase in joblessness among Black workers has raised concerns over the waning prospects for the Black labor force.

The Bureau of Labor and Statistics revealed that the unemployment rate for Black individuals rose from 4.7% to 5.6% between April and May.

Earlier this year, unemployment rates among Black workers reached their lowest levels in over a year, narrowing the gap with their white counterparts.

However, according to the Economic Policy Institute (EPI), the economic fate of Black women in America provides compelling evidence of the enduring impact of gender and race discrimination on workers and families.

Researchers at the EPI found that employer practices and government policies have historically disadvantaged Black women compared to white women and men, leading to unfavorable labor market positions.

Negative representations of black womanhood have reinforced these discriminatory practices and policies.

Additionally, the EPI highlighted that the view of black women as primary workers, dating back to the era of slavery, has contributed to their devaluation as mothers with caregiving responsibilities at home.

Approximately 50 percent of the increase in the number of unemployed workers was attributed to a rise in Black unemployment, suggesting that Black workers may bear a disproportionate burden during joblessness.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the impact was particularly pronounced among Black women, especially those working in the public sector. Their unemployment rate rose from 4.4% in April to 5.3% in May.

As Black workers constitute around 13% of the labor force, the significant increase in unemployment among Black women in May contributed significantly to the overall unemployment rate, Michelle Holder, an associate professor of economics at John Jay College at City University of New York, explained to NBC News.Black men’s unemployment rate increased from 4.5% to 5.6%.

Holder highlighted that more Black men work in transportation or warehousing compared to Black women, who have a strong presence in the public sector and work in retail, leisure, and hospitality.

The unemployment rate for Black workers reached its lowest level in over 50 years last month, driven by the substantial job growth in the transportation and warehouse sectors, which added one million jobs in the past three years, primarily benefiting Black men.

Experts underscored that while the loss of income from unemployment affects all households, it poses additional economic challenges for Black families, who are less likely to have savings or multiple earners.

Nonetheless, they said it’s worth noting that despite the recent increase, the overall unemployment rate for Black people has been declining since 2020, when it reached historically high levels, peaking at 16.8%.

“The rise in unemployment among Black workers counts as another example of systemic inequalities that have failed to ensure equal opportunities for all individuals in the labor market,” EPI researchers asserted.

concluded EPI researchers.

Black women have consistently exhibited the highest levels of labor market participation among all women in the United States, regardless of age, marital status, or the presence of children at home.

According to Nick Bunker, the director of economic research at the Indeed Hiring Lab, the latest report’s increase in the unemployment rate was its most concerning feature.

“Efforts to dismantle discriminatory practices, promote fair employment policies, and support marginalized communities are vital to ensuring sustained progress and inclusive economic growth for everyone.”

3 WAYS AI CAN SAVE SMALL BUSINESSES TIME AND STRESS

Generative AI is creating an extraordinary amount of buzz, and it's catching the interest of people wondering how to take advantage of what it has to offer. If you're a small-business owner, you're likely curious about how it can help you grow and succeed, especially as your business becomes more complex. Beyond the initial start-up phase, there are some clear indicators that your business is beginning to scale. For example, you may be expanding your online sales channels or in-person locations, hiring more employees, and increasing your inventory - all of which demands more of your time. It's critical to prepare yourself with the best tools and technology for continued success.

Turning to AI tools that are in products like Intuit QuickBooks can help automate tasks that would otherwise need to be done manually - freeing up your time to focus on what really matters to you.

WORK SMARTER, NOT HARDER

Almost all small-business owners note that they are turning to AI to help them automate low-level tasks, according to a recent Intuit QuickBooks Small Business Survey. They plan to adopt AI to help with marketing and content creation, analyzing customer trends and behaviors, and customer service support. Another 28% plan to adopt AI tools for managing cash flow and 24% say they want to use AI to automate low-level tasks.

The number one question I'm asked by our customers is 'How do I ensure the success of my business?'

said Kelly Vincent, a VP of the Small Business Group at Intuit. "The short answer is, know where to invest. If ever there was a time to tune in and understand how AI and technology can help your business, it's now. AI can help reduce the operational burden and automate low-level tasks, leveling the playing field for businesses by giving owners more time and resources to focus on what really matters."

Saving time and streamlining tasks are top reasons why small-business owners adopt AI. Wondering where to start? Here are three examples of how smallbusiness owners are using AI to their advantage:

• INVENTORY MANAGEMENT

Making sure you have enough inventory at the right time is challenging and time consuming. AI can help analyze your inventory and make recommendations including how often to restock popular items, what items to put on sale to move more product, which items may be worth eliminating and much more.

• BOOKKEEPING

Financial management is essential to a business's success. However, most small-business owners don't have a background in accounting or the resources to hire a dedicated accountant. In fact, 47% of small businesses wish they could automate financial reports. Fortunately, the AI features in QuickBooks can automate several accounting and bookkeeping data entry tasks as well as generate reports to inform important business decisions.

• MARKETING

A business can't succeed without customers. Getting and growing customers is equally important to the product or service you offer. Nearly 30% of business owners would like to automate customer engagement

and communications, like email marketing and customer support. Intuit Mailchimp has rolled out generative AI capabilities that help small businesses design onbrand marketing content faster, get copy ideas and inspiration, and test variants to deliver more personalized and engaging content to their customers.

AI helps small-business owners save time so they can focus energy on other key areas of your business like developing more products and services or finding new ways to reach customers.

Services like QuickBooks Online Advanced leverages AI to help streamline operations and provide financial management and helpful insights to drive your business forward.

Whether setting out for a beach day, a hike or sightseeing, I always pack a book, game or other activity. If you have any downtime, you'll be so much happier you can initiate in a group activity or pursue a passion, rather than resorting to scrolling on your phone.

Summer is the time for exploring new places, spending time outdoors and relaxing in the sun. Whether you are heading to the beach or to the mountains, it is important that you prioritize wellness in whatever ways you can and prepare in advance for a weekend away, keeping your personal health and nutrition in mind. NYT bestselling author and podcast host Max Lugavere is sharing his seven steps to prepare for a successful weekend trip that prioritizes well-being and incorporates his go-to healthy snack: almonds.

1. GET THOSE ZZZ'S

The beginning of a great trip starts the night before. Sleep sets the tone for the way we feel throughout the day, so make sure to get enough hours, especially if you have a big day ahead. Most adults require on average 7-9 hours each night.

2. FUEL UP WITH A NUTRIENT-DENSE BREAKFAST

You've heard it before, breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and a non-negotiable before spending a day out and about. Protein is a must in my breakfasts. One staple for me are almonds, which contain 6 grams of protein and 4 grams of fiber per serving, along with 13g

To maintain sustained energy levels, I grab almonds to snack on throughout the day. Almonds are a natural, whole food that will keep you full and are low in sugar, so no need to worry about your energy crashing.

5. GET SOME SUN, BUT DON'T OVERDO IT

We need some direct sun exposure to create vitamin D, get a nice healthy glow, and even help generate nitric oxide which can keep our cardiovascular system healthy. But there's no need to burn, which causes photoaging. I like to eat foods rich in skin-protecting astaxanthin (such as wild salmon) and antioxidant vitamin E (from almonds, for example). I also always keep mineral-based sunscreen on hand if I anticipate overexposure. Trust me, your skin will thank you by the end

From the beach to the mountains, summer is the season of adventure and of snacks, but feeling good throughout a weekend trip comes down to making nutrient-dense choices! That's why when I'm preparing for a day out and about, I'm packing almonds. Convenient and filling, almonds have 6g of protein and 4g of fiber in each serving, perfect for midday refuels. When energy levels are high, spirits will be too!

Are you ready to incorporate healthy habits into your summer routine and beyond? By utilizing Max's tips above, you'll surely be able to have your best summer yet. Check out almonds.com for more information on how you can kickstart your wellness routine this summer.

BBQ RUB ROASTED CHICKENS WITH POTATOES AND CARROTS RECIPE

This simple and tasty recipe yields a generous portion of chicken that can be enjoyed for another meal. The classic BBQ seasoning blend is exceptional, and it's a good idea to store some in an airtight container for future use, whether it's for enhancing pulled pork or a salmon steak. The chicken is cooked alongside small red potatoes and baby carrots, making cleanup a breeze. To maintain a rustic feel at dinnertime, serve the meal family-style by bringing the baking sheet straight from the oven to the table.

INGREDIENTS

Preheat the oven to 375°F. Combine the first 5 ingredients, 4 teaspoons of salt, and 2 teaspoons of pepper.

Remove the necks and giblets from the chickens and set them aside for later use. Pat the chickens dry.

Place 1 teaspoon of the brown sugar mixture inside the cavity of each chicken. Massage 1 tablespoon of olive oil into the skin of each chicken.

Sprinkle the remaining brown sugar mixture evenly over the skin and massage it in. Fold the wing tips underneath.

In a separate bowl, toss together the potatoes, carrots, remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil, remaining 1 teaspoon of salt, and remaining 1/2 teaspoon of pepper.

4 tsp of dark brown sugar

1 tbsp of smoked paprika

1/2 tsp of ground cumin

1/2 tsp of garlic powder

1/2 tsp of onion powder

5 tsp of kosher salt, divided

2 1/2 tsp of black pepper, divided

2 whole chickens (4-5 lbs each)

3 tbsp of olive oil

1 1/2 lbs of small red potatoes, halved

1 package (8 oz) of baby carrots

1 tbsp of chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley

Spread the potato mixture in a single layer on a rimmed baking sheet that measures 17 inches by 12 inches.

Place the chickens, breast side up, in opposite directions on top of the potato mixture to ensure even browning.

Bake in the preheated oven until a meat thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the thigh registers 165°F, which should take approximately 1 to 1 1/4 hours. Cover the chickens and let them rest for 10 minutes before slicing.

Stir the parsley into the vegetables.

DID YOU KNOW?

The path to finding a forever family can be strenuous and filled with challenges for Black children in foster care. Despite comprising just 18% of the child population in the county, Black children account for a staggering 47% of those in foster care. Currently, there are over 1,300 Black children residing in foster homes locally. Black youth are two to three times more likely to be reported for abuse or neglect, leading to investigations and subsequent removal from their biological families. Data reveals that Black children face longer waiting periods compared to children of other races when it comes to being adopted or reunited with their biological families. The Winners Circle Group of Texas works against those statistics giving hope to the needs of others while putting them in loving environments with purpose. For more information call 972.499.5066.
