D15 NIGHT MARKET

04

Media Makeover by Regina Tambunan, Alta Loma The Gracious Living Church in Upland has established a vicinity called the “Teen Center,” where teens can come in and hang out with others around their age, get help on homework, utilize computers, etc. The spot is essentially a “safe haven” in which kids can get escape and get help from the “outside world” of harassment, drug-pushing, etc., while promoting the teens to join organizations like Key Club. The Teen Center has been a popular gathering area for the Upland and Alta Loma Key Clubs, especially for when the two clubs collaborate and hold officer meetings together. The Center is also where last year’s Karaoke Night was held, and is also the same set location for this year’s Karaoke Night (P.S., it’s going to be on September 17th, hope to see you all there!). However, the place isn’t in an “ideal” shape. The Teen Center functions without air conditioning, so it gets very hot when teens gather there. Thus, the purpose of the event was to raise money for the teen center in order to improve their facilities. Joe Cano, Upland Key Club’s Kiwanis Advisor, gave a brief presentation on the issue, followed by a performance from entertainers including comedians and a magician. Clubbers’ presence at the event aided in persuading attendees to donate because they essentially set themselves as examples of what great works the Teen Center is promoting by volunteering at the event. Amery Castro says that at the event, “volunteers did tasks like clear[ing] the tables and dishes at the end of the event.” Clubbers were KEY elements in making the event successful by helping set and clean up.

Upland Rehab by Andrea Ruiz, Los Osos One event that Los Osos High School's Key Club always promotes is Upland Rehab. Upland Rehab is basically an event where members can play board games with seniors. I really love this event because it lets you bond with other members and the elderly there. They always talk about their life and how certain things have affected them positively and negatively. They also talk about their family, which is really cool to hear about because you can hear the love for them in their voice. Listening to them is also very fascinating because it shows you what life has is in store for you. As teenagers, we have our whole life ahead of us. We have so many things to learn and experience, that it makes you realize how beautiful life truly is. Another favorite thing about Upland Rehab is the prizes that we can take to the seniors. Besides us getting extra hours for that, just seeing them smile when they win and get a prize is so heartwarming. You can see how grateful they are, and that is so worth that 35 minute drive there. You can make someone's day just by playing a board game with them, so why not do it? I highly recommend this event to future and present members so that they can also experience that same happiness and satisfaction that I do when going to Upland Rehab.

Doggie Dash by Justin Andal, Rancho Cucamonga At this event, we’re given the opportunity to help the American Cancer Society raise money by having the community walk their dogs in a 5k lap. We helped by setting up booths for vendors and staff and lead the runners to the finish line. After helping direct the runners, we were able to walk around and look at the booths, play with the dogs, and dance with the DJ. This event was also a good opportunity to meet our new members from the club and others and see each one of them work really hard to make this event a fun time for the people. When all was said and done, we helped clean up and take down the booths to end the day.

First General Meeting by Grace Yang, Los Osos Los Osos Key Club’s first meeting was the Friday of our school’s club rush, which made it extremely convenient to advertise to the members that week. During our first meeting, an overwhelming majority of the members were new freshman, which is always exciting and a great thing to hear. We had our Kiwanis Advisor, Mr. Billings from the Rancho Cucamonga Kiwanis attend, as we had an informative meeting and explained to the members what Key Club is, what we stood for, and were able to explain the Kiwanis Family and introduce Mr. Billings to the members. We also had Roy Garcia, our immediate past president speak a few words, as well as our Lieutenant Governor, Ricardo Ruiz, tell the members to not be afraid to ask him questions about our club. In the end, we were happy that many of these new members were eager to volunteer right away, and had many volunteer event sign ups. The year is off to a great start, and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for our club!
