2013-2014 CNH Division 15 November Newsletter

Page 1

Hello Division 15, I am so proud of what we have accomplished together during Fall Rally season! Leaders across the division successfully helped all of us prepare and have a great time at Six Flags Magic Mountain-so shout out to all of you! Though Fall Rally is over, we know that we have much more to do, so let us take advantage of these next few months and make more great memories together. As the Holiday seasons are coming up, I hope all of you are using this great time to your advantage. This period always has plentiful service opportunities available and members have great motivation to serve during this jolly period! As January is coming up, it means elections are also coming. As leaders, please pay attention to the next generation of leaders. Encourage them, foster them, and be their biggest supporters. As for me, I hope that those great leaders of Division 15 can take that extra step and run to LTG! Do not forget that I can be a friend you can always talk to if you are anxious. Yours in Service Amy He D15 Lt. Governor 2013-2014

Although it’s fall, the summer heat waves continued to persist well into the late months. With times like these, nothing was more satisfactory than frozen yogurt. On October 29th, the Division Host Club committee held a north and south Yogurtland Fundraiser. With the perfect weather for the occasion, many Key Clubbers came to and fro in this “united” fundraiser to make the Host Club event possible. Host Club is an event based off the show “Ouran High School Host Club” which has “hosts” entertain customers. Thanks to all of the Key Clubbers participating in the fundraiser, this event will be able to accomplish all it hopes for!

With the lingering summer heat persisting on still, the annual Ice Skating Social was the perfect fundraiser social to combat the heat as well. Every year, the Division holds an Ice Skating Social to raise money for the Pediatric Trauma Program. Furthermore, this even helps kick off the new school year and provide a chance for new members to assimilate into the division and meet new people. The event was fun-filled, and with the giraffes invading the Center Ice Arena. Many members danced and skated together as groups, friends, and more. Though many struggled, giraffes, resonating the caring core values of a Key Clubber, helped pick others up every time and stayed by their side. At the end of the day, members were able to hang the skates and smile to a rewarding day filled with fun, laughter, and smiles.

Pre-Gift Wrapping for Inclusion By: Chong Peng On October 25th, Los Osos Key Club participated in Pre-Wrapping for Inclusion to prepare for the upcoming Wrapping for Inclusions. Eight Key Club members met with the representative from the National Inclusion Project, Southern California Wrapping for Inclusion organizer Leslie Grimes to learn and perfect gift-wrapping skills in order that members be ready for the upcoming wrapping events. While teaching members how to wrap, Leslie explained the causes of the National Inclusion Project and that the money raised during the holiday season would be used to create and certify inclusive play institutions— places where children with and without autism can play together, allowing for these children to receive the social development that they often are behind on. Leslie explained that through this program, not only do children with autism improve their social skills, but children without autism realize that the stereotypical label of “Autistic person” does not accurately represent the majority of people with this condition. She explained that it allows children to realize the invalidity of the labels and to understand that autism or not, children can be friends and play together. This touching story was able to motivate our members, who, as a result, are not only determined to make a difference on the first Wrapping for Inclusion event on Black Friday, but are determined to seek more of the opportunities Key Club provides them to make a difference in their community.

Hello Kitty Day By: Jason Lai Hello Kitty Day was a holiday dedicated to Hello Kitty and hosted by the Paul A. Biane Library. Avid hello kitty fans attended and enjoyed activities such as story time, arts & crafts, and carnival. Key club volunteered and arranged the activities. It was a wonderful sight seeing the children have and brought back nostalgic feelings. Key club had a great time helping the children and assisting the employees with the festivities. At the event, volunteers were split up into various groups: greeting, decorating, and game committees. My friends and I were a part of the game committee, and we assisted by helping adorable adolescents throw bean bags. Regardless of whether or not the children got a beanbag into a hole, they were rewarded for their efforts with an adorable Hello Kitty “tattoo” or sticker. The kids looked so happy, and I look forward to going back next year.

Cranes Stringing Workshop By: Jaie Peshawaria Cranes Stringing Workshop is an event that our club reintroduced to its members. The purpose of this workshop is to string an adequate amount of cranes that will be able to be hung throughout various children’s hospitals. Many may think that these simple decorations don’t have an effect on the kids, but in reality, it is a small gesture that can liven up the white walls they are surrounded by. Members seem to enjoy this event as it has proved to be quite therapeutic. The strings of cranes are held up with paper rolls and are tied on a couple at a time. This creates a beautiful effect as each member puts his or her own artistic vision into it. Though this wouldn’t be considered a very direct service event, the mere thought and purpose behind it, is something to be really appreciated. Chino Hills Key Clubbers are fully aware of how blessed they are to be healthy and with their families, while also realizing that there are youth out there who live in hospitals for months at a time because they are frankly too ill to be living at home. This event is proof that even the smallest of actions can truly make a difference, even if it’s just brightening up some plain old walls in a hospital room.

Returning to Where It All Began By: Sarah Jeon As we dwell in the depths of high school, Ayala Key Clubbers took a step back-returning to where all things began, elementary school. Elementary school. The place where many still reminsice their first memories. Memories of school recitals, reccess, and the infamous family fun nights. This past month, our key clubbers formed a partnership with Eagle Canyon Elementary School, volunteering at their holiday-themed family fun nights. They aided the PTSA in every aspect of this festivity. From setting up jumpers to giving out prizes to the children, many enjoyed interacting with the young students at the very same place they used to call "school." Although tiring from continuous hours of picking up rings from the ring toss games or blowing balloons to make the school look more appealing, Ayala Key Clubbers never phased, their smiles never leaving their faces. Proving that the hours of service did not go to waste as we were truly building connections with our local schools and community.

Bakesale for PTP By: Austin Frenes On Saturday October 19th, our club sold various baked goods at a local Boy Scout’s car show in order to raise funds to donate to PTP. Members of our club had gathered at our President’s home the previous night in order to prepare cookies, cake pops, cheese cake, brownies, and lemonade. At the car show, we saw a good response from all who attended, as well as the Boy Scouts, whom are treasurer is a member of. Some members who were working our stand walked around to sell our goods to those who had vehicles entered into the show. For a few of the members who attended, this was their first, or one of their first events of their Key Club experience, and they said that they felt that the event was a positive experience. After reimbursement, our club raised $83 for PTP.

Night of the Stars By: Ingrid Channa Many people can remember those young years celebrating grades and scores with award nights, which brings that feeling of being at the top of the world. Thus, it was especially satisfying for the Alta Loma Key Clubbers to return to Alta Loma Elementary School this month—helping them celebrate the Night of the Stars, an awards night celebrating CST scores. The elementary school asks high schoolers to volunteer every year because of the young children’s “admiration for older ‘cool’ teens, who seem so grown up to them,” a teacher said. The elementary school goes all out for the children, laying down red carpet, with a “paparazzi” line celebrating them and taking pictures of every family, having a banquet, and holding a separate awards night for the families. This takes up many rooms in the school for all the different parts. Usually Alta Loma High asks sports team, but they tried asking Key Club this year and were overwhelmed and more than satisfied with the amount of volunteers. Volunteers got to act as the paparazzi, serve food, help set up, and help clean up. This awards night was so special every volunteer and family was asked to dress up semi-formal for the event. All in all, it was an extremely fun and heartwarming event—witnessing the younger generation grinning from ear to ear on their amazing achievements thus far.

Typhoon Haiyan By: Jamie Alarcon The devastating news of Typhoon Haiyan hitting central Philippines worries the whole world. Everyone is doing their best to contribute whatever they can to help those in need. As for Etiwanda Key Club, we helped spread the word that the nearby community center, Jesse Turner, is holding an open table donations on November 17, 2013. All the donations will go towards Red Cross and ABS CBN. A member of Etiwanda Key Club is also gathering nonperishable food and clothes because her and her family will be putting together numerous balikbayan boxes. These boxes would normally contain gifts that would be sent to loved ones back home and instead we will be sending abundant blessings partially from Etiwanda Key Club to those affected by the typhoon. More than half of our club is Filipino so this contribution really hits home to many of our members. Other than that breaking news, our club is starting to gather canned foods for the Gap Food Bank. These canned foods are specifically for those in need during Thanksgiving. Tomorrow, November 16, 2013, we will hold a park clean in Hunters Ridge. This provides our club more community service as well as bonding time with the rest of our members. For the officers, it’s amazing to see how much time has gone by this year and we look forward to the many events to come this month.

Pilgrim Place Festival By: Lucia Zhang The Pilgrim Place Festival, held once a year, is one of the most exciting events of the year for Claremont residents. From dancing to baked goods and even to dressing up, the diverse community can be seen during the first weekend of November. The Pilgrim Place community strives to reach out to those who want to continue a path of religious or charitable non-profit organizations while exploring different opportunities. Each year, there are special home-made jams, cookies, and other sweets. The Festival that takes place each year in November draws many people to get involved. It truly is a wonderful experience for all! This year, many Claremont Key Club members came as early as 9:30am to help set up the booths and stayed as late as 4. There were three different shifts: 9:30-12, 11:30-2, and 1:30-4. A popular booth was the baked goods booth, in which members collected money and organized all the baked goods on the table. Some helped cash out change while others helped pick out the sweets customers wanted. Around noon, volunteers had the opportunity to venture around and get lunch. After lunch, Key Clubbers continued with aiding others and helping out at different booths. There were also fun activities including a mini-train ride around the community, dancing, face painting, and singing. Claremont Key Club members had an amazing time volunteering there and were grateful to have such a great opportunity in helping out Claremont!

Hello lovely giraffes! Thank you again for an unBEElievable experience at Fall Rally! This will definitely be something I will never forget. I’m so thankful to have been able to spent my last Fall Rally with the best Division anyone could ask to serve. And as a senior, I’ve come to realize that Fall Rally is an experience that will definitely leave a mark in my high school memories, and I don’t any other event will be able to replace it—so treasure every Fall Rally well! I wish I could’ve attended more Fall Rally, since this was only my second year. But even then, it’s gives me such pride to see just how much we have fundraised for PTP and what a difference we’re making as Key Clubbers. I hope the passing of Fall Rally alleviates some stress for all of the officers, and I hope everyone else had a great experience as well! The holiday season is coming—and that means the busiest volunteering time of the year. It also means the most heartwarming time as well. Let’s all remember all the great things we have in our lives and don’t forget to show appreciation for them! Since Thanksgiving is coming up, I’m so thankful of every Key Clubber for everything you guys have done, and how every member has left an impact on me. -Ingrid Channa

Hey Division 15! I hope everyone had a wonderful time a Fall Rally. I personally had an awesome time, meeting new people and growing closer to my lovely giraffes. I am so proud of what we have accomplished so far. At Fall Rally, it struck me how much we are really doing. When the Kiwanis advisor was talking about how our efforts, through the money we had fundraised and also the time we put in, had been saving lives, I was shocked. But I remembered that a little effort, a small contribution from a lot of caring people, can have life-changing effects. With the holidays coming up, I know that there will be many events dedicated to giving those in need a helping hand. We should do our best to attend these events and help these organizations do as much as they can for these people. This Saturday, November 23rd, we will be talking about how we can make a difference during the holidays and much more at the November DCM. At this DCM, there will be information about the “Christmas of Euclid” event and Region Winter Formal, as well as info. about how we can help the current crisis in the Philippines. I look forward to seeing you all soon! Bye! -Jaie Peshawaria
