Merry Christmas, Giraffes! Let us enjoy this jolly season. Drop your Key Club work and worries, and thankfully enjoy the holidays with your family and friends. However, once it is over, let us go back to our work with full speed and energy! In January, we will have some serious business to cover, including Member Recognition Program, District Convention, Monthly Report Form edits, as well as contest applications and scholarships. However, there will also be socials and dances coming up that would make this work worthwhile. As elections period is coming up, please keep in mind to be thoughtful of your successors in order for your club to keep going to greater heights. But also—let us make the rest of our term worth it. Every moment and every memory counts. Have a great Christmas and Happy New Year, Amy He D15 Lt. Governor ’13-‘14

By: Jaie Peshawaria "On November 24th, from 7am-9am, Division 15 had the opportunity to volunteer at the Graffiti Run in Pomona. Members arrived bright and early to learn more about their jobs they would be assigned during the run. We were to help out in two areas, Registration and the actual colored powder-throwing. Those who would be throwing the powder were called the “Graffiti Squad.” Those who were part of the Graffiti squad were split into four groups, which all had a specific color that they would be throwing. The color zones were blue, pink, green, and yellow. The event started at around 9am, and the runners came in waves. It was awesome to be able to throw the powder at the people. My blue station got everyone who came by, and the runners were all “blue” by the tine they got through our wave of color. I ACTUALLY had the chance to run through the course and it was unbelievable. All the Key Clubbers aimed for me and by the time I had gotten through all four zones, I literally looked like a rainbow. When I returned to my station, all my fellow volunteers looked “smurfs.” I just wanted to thank everyone who volunteered for their effort and hard work."
Candidate Training Conference was a training conference for those interested in running for Lieutenant Governor for the upcoming or maybe later terms in Key Club! Members got to witness the inside scoop on what it’s like to be LTG and what they need to prepare for. Many times people who interested attend this event and can get a clearer view of whether or not they would like to run This year’s CTC was a huge success with many members thoroughly satisfied with the experience once asked. They were divided into smaller groups, making it easier to bond and get to know others in something called, “break outs,” in which many members found extremely helpful and satisfying. Overall, it was a great experience and we look forward to seeing our future leaders soon!
Right now many details are still being worked out for the January DCM! Look forward to it being either the 11th or the 18th depending on the Winter Formal! A distinguished contest workshop led by the Division Board will also be held at the DCM, so watch out for that!
Tentative date: January 11th or 18th Location: STC Center Semi-formal Theme: NIGHT UNDER THE GOLDEN STARS What is Region Winter Formal? It’s an annual dance where members all across Region 13 come together to dance for a night full of fun! Start preparing for the upcoming Winter Formal—ask those dates, friends, and get those dresses ready!
Start choosing delegates for the upcoming Conclave! Conclave is a Region event where delegates from each high school elect the next Lieutenant Governor for their Division! The Region 13 Conclave is on February 22nd Start incorporating future leaders and officers to events like these—since it will impact them the most!
It’s almost election season! Make sure you follow election procedure when running elections! Some basic things to note:
No campaigning is allowed at all! All candidates should be in a separate room from the person speaking There should be a caucus session
And your club may choose the rest of the election procedure! Have them elected before DCON!
Cal Aero Family Night By: Jaie Peshawaria The Christmas cheer was felt by everyone at the Cal Aero Preserve Academy Family Holiday Night. This event was the first event that we had participated in with this elementary school, and we were lucky to have had this opportunity. The event was from 5:30pm-8:30pm on December 11th, and was actually an event that the school had never done before on such a large scale. We arrived at the gymnasium of the Cal Aero elementary school at 5:30pm to help set -up. We laid out tables, helped bring out boxes of supplies, set-up chairs, and bring in a bag full of boxes of pizza that were to be given out to the families later on in the evening. There were tons of fun activities planned for the kids such as crafts, puzzles, and coloring stations. There was also an awesome photobooth, with props, and a hot chocolate/s’more-making station. The students and their families came in around 6pm, and were greeted with festive holiday music. Straight away, many people came to get their dinner. I was personally in charge of the food, and along with a few other members, would pass out the meals. The meals consisted of pizza, cheese or peperoni, a bag of chips, and a drink. Elsewhere at the event, member Megan Walsh was charge of one of the craftmaking tables and helped the kids make snowflakes made of beads and pipe cleaners. About midway through the event, the students apart of the band program played a couple of Holiday songs for everyone. I did have a chance to talk to the principal of the school at the end of the night, and she thought our club did a fantastic job. She even asked us to help at their next family event, which will be sometime in January. Our club did an excellent job in making sure that this night was enjoyable for the children and their families.
Christmas on Euclid By: Nanxi Liu The clouds overhead the gloomy skies on December 7, 2013 threatened to rain as Key Clubbers began arriving at the U.S. Bank on Euclid Street in Ontario. Christmas music danced around the street and into everyone’s hearts as tens of volunteers worked together to carry out several chairs, a couple tables, and a multitude of childrens’ books. As soft rain began sprinkling the city, Key Clubbers began organizing books into categories, while simultaneously shielding the books. Categories ranged from dinosaurs to animals to Magic Tree House and Junie B. Jones books (which brought back lots of nostalgia), and the books were sorted to aid children in easily choosing a book they liked. As more rain began to fall, so did our faces as we knew that books could not last long in the rain. Sullen-faced, the Kiwanians informed us that the event had to be rescheduled because of the rain; books and tables were rushed back to the U.S. Bank back room. I was devastated- this was my favorite event of the year; my friends and I did not lose hope, and we tried to find several solutions to give out books under an awning where everyone would be dry. In the end, Mr. Morris told informed us that it would not be possible, and I felt so sad. However, walking back to the back room, I saw that coffee and tea were being distributed, books were still being sorted and packaged, and an abundance of Christmas cheer was still intact. Although the event may have been cancelled for the day, all the Key Clubbers were still working as hard as ever with a smile on their face, and that was one of the most inspirational realizations. “There’s a lot of children who do not have any kind of book at their house, and we work all year long to get donations of slightly-used books to children. Last year, we gave out 3,000 books to kids. In the end, you could not do anything without the lower being with you. Nothing could be done, and I’m the president, but all the people of my Kiwanis and Key Club help me with my endeavor. Look at how many key clubbers, over 75 individuals from different clubs! What a turnout!” Kenneth A. Morris, president of Ontario Parkway Kiwanis, stated. The people of Kiwanis inspire me so much, and I am ecstatic that Christmas on Euclid was even better than the last year; although the weather was not perfect, Key Clubbers and Kiwanians adapted, and showed me one of the best Christmas miracles; the thousands of books will still be distributed as long as everyone in Key Club and Kiwanis work hard and keep this dream alive with a hope that burns brighter than the sun.
Holiday Service By: Jamie Alarcon On December 4th, the Student Achievement program at Etiwanda held a Barnes and Noble fundraiser. We attended this event to participate in reading to little kids as well as coloring with them. Some of us were able to wrap numerous presents for buyers raising money for the fundraiser. All in all, this event was successful for our school and Student Achievement was very thankful to Etiwanda Key Club for volunteering. Following that week was Christmas on Euclid! Sadly December 7th brought rain that prevented Kiwanis and Key Club from handing out books to children. Although it was postponed, around 10 of our members attended the morning shift whether it was helping to set up or just to stick around and help support everyone at Christmas on Euclid. The next day, December 8th, it was early in the morning and about 5 of our members attended Target Christmas. Members were separated into small groups and given $100 to spend on a child. This child got to bond with the members and go around Target finding whatever they wanted as long as it was in the $100 budget. One member shared the complete joy that filled their hearts when they saw how happy the little girl or boy was to receive all those gifts. The experience was totally priceless and all the members would love to do it again next year if they could. Closing the school semester and nearing winter break, Etiwanda’s Staff decided to have a holiday party Friday morning on December 13th. Majority of our school participated in creating a wonderful gathering for all the teachers. ASB set and decorated the event as well as the Jazz band, Chambers choir, and our Epic Improv club for entertainment. As the staff entered the MPR, Key Club greeted our fellow teachers and had the chance to assist them with serving food. Near the end of the meeting/gathering, Key Club threw the staffs empty dishes and cups away. It was interesting to be waiters and waitresses to our teachers but in a way fun and worth it. It’s only mid-December but Etiwanda Key Club continues to plan more community service events whether it’s teaming with other clubs within our high school or more bonding with our own club and hopefully our buddies such as Alta Loma and Rancho Cucamonga. These events include Feed the Children and the Gap Food Bank. Until then, we officers are very pleased with how the year has been filled with service and growth.
Isaiah’s Rock By: Vanessa Luu To help out during the holiday season, Don Lugo Key Club had members attend both days of service for Isaiah’s Rock. Through Isaiah’s Rock, multiple clubs, schools, and organizations helped to collect, sort out, and package Thanksgiving baskets for families in need. The members had a great time serving with each other as well as meeting a few new people who also felt the joy of helping others. Members were also able to spot some alumni who wanted to come back and serve the community after graduation. One of the best parts of the event was the beginning when everyone who was there to volunteer gathered together to sing along to “Hello Neighbor”. The song was able to bring everyone together and remind us all why the world needs service and that we all should give each other a helping hand because we do not know when we might need help as well. The three hours that the members were there were quite hectic. People were jumping into large boxes of cans in order to reach the bottom while others were crowded around to take those cans to their appropriate places. Boxes for food were torn open and sorted as well. Time passed by quickly as basket after basket was made and stored away. Eventually, with everyone’s collective efforts, Isaiah’s Rock was able to package over 1000 baskets of food. To end the day, the members had a dinner together and enjoyed the feeling of being able to help others. The next day, Key clubbers volunteered to distribute the baskets to families in need.
Bows for Chandler By: Vanessa Hsia Very recently, Ayala’s treasured teacher and coach, Mr. Jefferey Chandler, passed away from stage four ardenocarcinoma. Mr. Chandler’s passion for teaching, his lively personality, and remarkable sense of humor will always be deeply embedded in our minds. He has touched us all and is a truly inspirational man. In order to further celebrate his life as well as preserve his memory, Ayala Key Club began a “Bows for Chandler” fundraiser. The goal of said fundraiser is to honor Mr. Chandler and to make a donation to the American Cancer Society in his name. The purple bows symbolize his fight and unwavering courage against the treacherous disease. They are being sold by Ayala Key Clubbers, many of them students of Mr. Chandler. We believe the bows should be sold by the people who knew him best, the people he taught and loved. They are $3 each and we will be totaling the amount on Tuesday, the 17 th. Mr. Chandler’s sudden passing really shocked and punctured Ayala’s spirit; we hear terrible stories of cancer but we never truly understand until we ourselves are affected by it. Therefore, intimes like these, it is important for our school to unite and do something good, together, for ourselves, for Mr. Chandler, and for other friends and families affected by this disease. Cancer must be stopped; there is no other option, and “Bows for Chandler” is our solution. We hope that the funds we raise through “Bows for Chandler” will lead us one step closer to a cure and cancer-less future.

In the essence of the holiday spirit and channeling the giraffe message of compassion and caring for others, I always enjoy giving back, whether it's to those who have already given so much to me or to those who just deserve the extra love and attention during this winter season!
Our family has an annual tradition of going to Mammoth Mountains. We usually spend Christmas up there too! Snow snow snow !!!
With my family! A lot of the relatives have birthdays very close to Christmas, so we also bring cakes for them, so every year, there are 5 cakes.
Be with family and friends as much as I can..and EAT! I celebrate by eating as much tamales as I can. (also by hoping I recieve something more than a potato like last year)
I celebrate the holiday season with my family and friends. My family and I stay up until 12 o'clock on Christmas Eve and go to church. Then after church we go to my aunt's house and say Merry Christmas and open our gifts. :D I sleep and stay home all day. Oh and I also like to play with my dog

Hello Giraffes! I hope you’re all enjoying the holiday season right now—being with friends, family, food, sleep, games, and much more! December DCM was super fun seeing so MANY giraffes! And now’s a wonderful time to catch up on everything and truly enjoy the spirit of giving, service, kindness, and all those other warm fuzzy feelings! We’re entering a pretty hectic season in Key Club as we start to prepare for the new term. Start looking into those contests because you all deserve recognition for all of your hard work towards Key Club! Don’t forget to also keep an eye out for new blood, successors, and the like for the upcoming elections. It’s a sad thing to think about the term ending soon, but it’s also quite exciting to see the changes that will be coming. Hopefully you guys enjoy this winter-y holiday-ish sort of theme going on. It was a bit crazy, but worth a shot! -Ingrid Channa Division Newseditor
