The Service Awakens

03

On June 18th, Division 15 hosted our annual Officer Training Conference along with our long-time friends, the Division 36 West Huskies. Starting in the early afternoon, the Division Leadership Teams from both divisions collaborated and worked to set up at the Cali-Nev-Ha district office for the upcoming event. While members filed in, we all could feel the excitement and energy everyone had, as friends reunited and members met new people, including Kiwanians! After were the DCMs, and general session. During the general sessions, members got to listen to LTGs Ricky Ruiz and Shomari Sterling present informational power points about topics such as the preferred charities of Key Club International, and participate in activities such as writing “love notes” to one another. Together, we laughed, cheered, and learned as one group, one club, one family. Members also were able to attend two sessions of presentations hosted by their peers. From learning about the duties of specific officer positions such as “Presidents and Vice Presidents” to daily habits such as “How to BEE Organized,” both members and officers were able to ask questions and share their tips from experience in order to help one another strive to help better serve their home, school and community. Although the next OTC is far away, many are looking to RTC, or Region Training Conference, coming in the fall. So until then, be on the lookout for the OTC power points that will be emailed out to everyone, in case you missed them! - Grace Yang, D15 Executive Assistant

Soups On!

05

The Soups On event at Grace Lutheran Church was actually very fun. At the beginning of the event, we set out cold waters for each competitor. After, groups of people were assigned different jobs. I separated raffle tickets that would later be sold to guests, while others helped set up. When the event actually started, we all served soup to anyone that wanted some. We even got to go around and try soups for ourselves. At the end of the event we helped clean up. We folded and stacked chairs and tables, brought pots to the kitchen to be washed, and threw away all the trash. I think the event was actually really fun. The soup served there were all really good. They even served ice cream and cookies. The best part though, is that all the food was free. I really enjoyed this event; it is definitely something I want to do again next year. -Kristine Martin, Upland

United Way Backpacking

06

Being given the pleasure to work alongside a company with identical goals as us, we had the opportunity to help kids who are in need of food. These kids rely on their school to provide food for the weekdays, but over the weekend, would have little to no food to eat. Our goal with the United Way program is to provide the food that they need. With our local Kiwanians, our members packed the food and boxed them to be shipped to the schools, where they’ll be given to the teachers to distribute to their students. - Andrew Le, Rancho Cucamonga

Relay for Life

07

As my school year came to a close, I participated in an event known as Relay for Life. Relay for Life is a fundraising event held by the American Cancer Society to raise money for the fight against cancer. Before the event, I was able to raise more than eleven dollars which doesn't seem like much, but Key Club has taught me that everything helps and it sincerely felt good to donate, even if it wasn't the largest amount. During the event, many of the Key Club officers and a couple members formed a group known as Ninja Giraffe Squad and together we competed against other teams to raise the most money. We were even joined by a cancer survivor who the president of the American Cancer Society club knew personally. It really touched my heart to see her with a smile across her face as she helped our group with the many activities. Just like how Key Club showed me the importance of the Eliminate Project, Pediatric Trauma Program, and March of Dimes, Relay for Life showed me how important the fight against cancer truly is. Overall, it was nice to donate and fund raise for the event and I do plan on donating more to ACS in the years to come. -Nasser Elhajjaoui, Los Osos

Townsend Dance

08

The Townsend 8th Grade BBQ Dance was an amazing event! I had a lot of fun during this event and it was a good experience. I went to the dance when I was in 8th grade last year, so it was cool being able to volunteer for this event. Many people wanted to sign up for this event, and I hope we have more events throughout the year that attract people like how this event did. We helped set up the food, make the cotton candy, make the snow cones, clean up, and help set up their promotion practice. We took shifts because there was a really good amount of volunteers at this event! Unfortunately, the advisor of this event did not let us take breaks. Even if we were off of our shift, had nothing to do, and worked hard, he did not let us go into the dance area and get face paint, take photos, or dance. We were all very disappointed. I would definitely go again to this event next year, and I will encourage others to come next year!! - Gina Min, Chino Hills
