LIEUTENANT Govenor

Hello Koalas!

We have had a great start to the 2014-2015 term! Although only two months have passed since District Convention and the Installation of the officers, we have already began achieving the goals I have set for the division: Service, Unity, and Inspiration. You truly are all amazing Key Club members. You have already gone above and beyond what is expected of you. As Key Clubbers we have been serving the community around us on almost a weekly basis. It is because of all of you that we are making a difference around the world, one community at a time. All of you have proven that you can serve as competent, servant leaders to the community. Strive to serve the community as often as humanly possible. Never forget that we are here to serve the community as Key Clubbers. Since DCON, we have also grown so much closer as a division. There are new friendships developing between members who serve different home clubs, the occurrence of inter-club events, and large participation in division-wide functions. Our constant community service as a family has proved that we are one dynamic force striving toward the betterment of the community. We are truly defining what it means to be a koala ohana. Both the hard work of members and officers are alike are beginning to inspire the people around us. You have already started inspiring those we volunteer for, the other members in the division, and me. Your actions as Key Clubbers have left a mark on the division as well as the community. Never forget that your community service and fundraising can have a huge impact worldwide. We are shaping communities one service hour, one dollar, and one random act of kindness at a time. Spirited with Koala-ty Service, Monica Reyes Division 25 East Lieutenant Governor 2014-2015

Sadly this school year has come to an end, and we will have to give our final goodbyes and hugs to graduating seniors. But rather than an end, a new year creates new opportunities and new goals to look forward to. Fortunately unlike the school year, being in key club gives me activities to participate in all throughout summer. Giving me great reasons to see my friends often while giving to the community. Its a "win win" situation. At this moment I am enthusiastic of what key club holds for me and Cleveland next year.

GRANADA HILLS CHARTER

El Oro Fun Day Saturday, May 17th, marked a very special day for both the kids that attend El Oro Elementary School and the Key Clubbers that volunteered! This was a service event where Granada’s koalas served at different booths where kids played entertaining games and participated in lively activities; such as Bounce Houses, Raffles, Spill the Milk, Vine on a Line, and so much more. But as a suprise, our mighty volunteers were able to engage in the booths they were working at as well! It was an awesome reminder that even though us Key Clubbers genuinely choose to serve without expecting anything in return, we still always get something back anyway…whether it was the smiles on the kids’ faces or treating ourselves to a fun game we played back when we were younger!

Officer Reflection : Vice President Maiko Fujiki-Guadagno

“Hey y'all! This past month we've had quite a few events. We've gave back to the children of our community by volunteering at Everybody Reads as well as El Oro's Family Fun Festival. We also enjoyed this month's Super Hero themed DCM. Lastly we volunteered at this year's World Fest! It was fun helping out and meeting wonderful people as we did. Next month we plan on having many more events and fundraisers so be on the lookout!”

Kennedy RUN OR DYE Memorial Day, Kennedy key clubbers got to experience the world’s most colorful 5k! Run or Dye was certainly one of the most enjoyable runs that Kennedy has ever done. We had the opportunity to paint each other and the sky. In the end we cleaned up the running pathways and got treated to some free Run or Dye gear.

Reflections “Summer has just begun but that doesn’t

mean the service stops! This term we have so many exciting service events planned for our members to participate in. Color Run one of the events the members (including the board) are super ecstatic about! We also started to sell our koala wristbands again, which is one of many beneficial fundraisers to come. I can hopefully show that service doesn’t have to be boring but also fun. This way as a club we can gain more members!” Jesse Gonzaga, Club Vice President

James Monroe High School Key Club

Monroe Key Club at Operation Gratitude!

This month’s events Monroe Key Club participated in Operation Gratitude once again this month! And once again, members had an amazing time packaging items to send to our troops all over the world! Monroe Key Club participated in Everybody Reads! Members had a great time working with the younger kids! Three of Monroe’s members were recognized for their attendance, so great job to them!

Officer Reflection

This month has been super successful! Our club has accumulated over 200 hours of community service! All the officers seem to be adapting really well to their positions! Member involvement has been amazing! I am really excited for member recruitment during the fall! But meanwhile, we have events planned for the summer. Overall, I’m ecstatic to see what the new school year brings because our work is never done!

Northridge Academy Chatsworth CBI Prom On Saturday May 3, 2014, Chatsworth Kiwanis hosted a Special Needs Prom for students of Chatsworth High School. From 10:3012:30 Link Crew, Key Club, and Kiwanis members helped setup the 1920s themed dance, by 6pm it was Prom time. Students helped serve food, wait tables, wash dishes, clean up, and dance with the attendees. This was a great service event to attended, because not only did we serve our community, but we also had the chance to interact with the teens that attended the dance. If you're looking for a fun, energetic service event this is one you don't want to miss out on.

Northridge Academy

Officer Reflection There's been up and downs, but we've pushed through. Northridge has been trying to up our game to represent our home club. We may not be a big club, but we have some pretty rad devoted members. My goals for the 2014-2015 term are: member retention, creating competent members, inspiring people to run for a position, having fun, memorable service events and fundraisers, and to build a closer relationship with my fellow D25E clubs.

Operation GRATITUDE

Kayla Gonzalez | Monroe HS

Last month, Monroe Key Clubbers enjoyed volunteering at Operation Gratitude so much that we decided to make it a monthly event. At this event, we can do all sorts of activities, from packaging boxes, making paracord bracelets, write letters to servicemen, write addresses on the boxes, and even work behind the assembly line. What Monroe loves about this event is that there is always something to do, no matter what your preference is. Operation Gratitude is definitely an event for member who just love to continuously serve. The people who run the organization are very passionate and friendly, which spreads to all of the people volunterring. Plus, the amazing food trucks don’t hurt either. Personally, my favorite activity to do it work behind the assembly line. This month I was stationed at the book area and got to give everybody books to put in the boxes. Other members were stationed at the magazines and even the Girl Scout cookies section. Members also enjoy making the paracord bracelets. When the instructor teaches you to make them, she always says to put all of your good karma into them and hope that whoever gets this bracelet will never have to use it, since the bracelet is for people in danger. This is one of the reasons Operation Gratitude is such an amazing organization to volunteer with. Giving back to people who have given their life for this country is an extremely rewarding feeling. Some of our members have family members that served or are serving in the military, and they have expressed how much this event means to them. Monroe definitely plans on returning to this event next month!

Ask Kenny The Koala

This is your chance to get all your questions about Key Club answered. Don’t forget to ask Kenny questions because he loves to answer them.

Q. What is so special about Key Club? Do you make KEYS? In my opinion, the thing that makes Key Club special is the many opportunities that it give you. When you join Key Club you are not only shown the beauty of serving your community but you also make new friendships with those that have the same interests as you. Key Club gives the members the opportunity to provide service, build character and develop leadership. We also don’t make Keys its an acronym meaning “Kiwanis Education for Youth”

EVERYBODY READS

Mizelle Felx | Granada Hills Charter HS

At the last Everybody Reads for the school year at Noble Elementary School, many children from Kindergarten to fifth grade gathered in the auditorium with the volunteers. They seemed to be really shy at first, but eventually, they had the biggest smiles on their faces as they made cards for the volunteers. There were many volunteers, so many children had multiple helpers with them. In the fourth grade table, a girl named Carrie was with many of us from Division 25 East. She told me that she liked having us with her. One of the advisors told the volunteers that there was a last minute ceremony to be held, since it is the last Everybody Reads for the school year. We were assigned to have the children read a poem in front of everybody. Each grade level had a specific poem t o present to the parents, staff, schoolmates, and volunteers. When the volunteers had to bring their designated grade levels to the classrooms, the children were happily running to the classrooms. We all practiced for about an hour and a half. Then, each grade level presented with their volunteers. Some volunteers told me how hectic it was to watch over many children. My designated grade level only had three students, so we were very lucky. The poems read were very random, but the students did an excellent job for a last minute ceremony.

Kiwanis’ current global campaign for children is known as the Eliminate Project, aiming to raise 110 million dollars to save millions of mothers and their children from maternal/neonatal tetanus. This is a disease that kills one baby every nine minutes. This project was announced at the 95th Annual Kiwanis ICON June 2010.
