School has begun and that means it’s time to change things up a bit. I’ve spent some time over the past few weeks trying to find new ways to improve this newsletter.

As the school year rapidly approaches, I would like to say that Summer 2013 has been a great season for the division. This summer has been filled with many great events such as the Lt.G Banquet, Officer Training Conference, and our monthly DCMs. It was great seeing all you guys out there at so many of the events! It was even better seeing some new faces. One of my goals for the upcoming school year is to not only to recruit more members but to also make them want to stay in Key Club. I hope we can develop a huge family among each of the members—making friendships that will last a lifetime.

Wow! Can you believe it? School has already started and it’s another year closer to graduation. Anyway, this division has seriously been growing stronger and stronger each day; it’s incredible. Without the help of each club and the help from Lieutenant Governor Andrew, this division would not be complete. You all are super cool and keep up the great work!

Hello D25E Key Clubbers, I hope to meet each and every one of you this upcoming year. I am very excited for some upcoming events where I can hang out with my Ohana, and provide our communities with service. Events such as bonding days, service projects, a benefit concert, and much more are to be expected throughout this new term. I hope to get the opportunity to get to know you on a personal level.

As summer comes to a close, a new chapter in this Key Club year begins. School has started, and the next generation of Key Clubbers will be joining us shortly in the fight against MNT and the fun of community service. I know our division has the spirit and passion to make these new Koalas feel as welcome as possible. The officers are working their hardest to make this year more impactful than the last, and I cannot wait to see what great service events and fundraisers will take place! Region 7 Beach Clean Up Recap (More on page 20!)

Kayla Gonzalez | James Monroe HS On July 20th, the Region 7 Ohana gathered together for their annual beach clean up. It was a day filled with service, amusement, and spirit! This summer event was a great opportunity to meet new friends and come together to serve the area! The clean up was followed by games and spirit battles that made for great memories. The Region 7 Beach Clean Up was an experience that will not be forgotten! We can’t wait until next year!

Park Clean Up Norman De La Fuente | John F. Kennedy HS Kennedy Key Club’s main project for the month of July was a park clean-up. The event took place in Balboa Lake Park where a large portion of the surrounding area is made up of grass and sand picnic spots, the spots are often littered with plastic cups and water bottles.

Key Club President Jeymz Hipolito saw a chance to combine a community service event with a board member brain storming session. He made sure that we had adequate time to clean a large area then have a meeting afterwards.

The meeting was beneficial to club growth especially since the board members had enough time to think for back-to-school events. This meeting left everyone with a big boost in confidence that is much needed in the upcoming year.

Club News

On a very sunny day at the Balboa Park you could smell the sweet scent of baked goods. On July 13th, Birmingham held a bake sale during the Children’s Baseball game. The game went from 9-4 in the afternoon. All officers contributed goods.

Historian Natalie brought cookies and brownies. President Ruben brought small bags of chips, change, water, ice, and a cooler. Vice president Taylor made very cute cupcakes along with Secretary Allen.

We had assorted goods for snacks during the game. It was very hot and we were only allowed to sell outside the gates. Water was a very big success because everyone was very thirsty and the players especially.

We were able to make around 30 dollars.

This was a good learning experience for Birmingham Key Club because we learned about placing our sale in better locations.

We learned that we shouls bring more products appropriate for the weather since it was too hot for sweets. As we watched the game, we discussed ways to make more profit like the ice cream man. During the times when the sales went slow, we had a small club meeting. Since our Vice president Taylor couldn’t make it, our co-vice president Ali showed up. He came up with strategies to attract the people to our water and goods. Though the profit was small, we learned many new things for future venues and better products. At the end of the day, each one of us took some good advice home. All in a hard day’s work!

“Though the weather wasn’t at its best for the beach, it was definitely a pleasant joy to see the Region 7 family since there are only so many Region events. Not only was it a happy reunion, what’s a Key Club event without service? So, we further bonded while we were in groups scavenging the beach for litter.” –Hannah Luong Cleveland Key Club President.

Kennedy OPERATION GRATITUDE: Operation Gratitude is an event that pays tribute to the men and women who serve the United States Armed Forces. It consists of activities such as paracord survival bracelet making, stuffing bears to send to children with parents currently fighting overseas, and making care packages consisting of essential supplies for the soldiers. Operation Gratitude was held from July 31st to August 2nd, and August 6th at the Army National Guard Warehouse. “My personal experience with Operation Gratitude was more demanding but equally more rewarding. In attendance were 3 other Kennedy Key Clubbers together with Division 25 East LTG, Andrew Chang. The main activity for the day was stuffing camouflagedressed bears. The task was pretty basic and we had enough time to converse, socialize and talk about events while in the process of stuffing the bears. However, after about 30 minutes of stuffing, one of the people in charge of the operation asked me and Jeymz Hipolito, the Kennedy Key Club President, to help with the actual boxes. We transferred the boxes from one crate to another in an assembly line fashion; we then covered the finished crate with shrink wrap. The work was actually a lot more fun than it sounds like. After that we resumed to stuffing bears, it got repetitive but the company of my fellow Key Clubbers made a seemingly boring event into a chance to get to know each other better and show our gratitude to troops at the same time. If given the chance, I would happily do it all over again.�

JAMES MONROE For James Monroe Key Club, this past month has been dedicated to planning for the new school year. The board I serve and I have met and discussed all our goals for this coming school year. We have brainstormed many ideas for member recruitment, our first meetings, new events, and new fundraisers. We are planning start working with the MEND organization, and hope to turn it into a monthly service project. We plan to hit the ground running this year, because we want all of James Monroe High School to see what Key Club is all about.

This coming school year, I plan on bringing the Key Club spirit to the halls of James Monroe High School. The board I serve wants to see an increase in enthusiasm for Key Club.

We want the incoming members to experience all the fun and joy we have while serving through this organization. We plan to make this the year of Key Club for Monroe.

Northridge Academy Northridge Academy August was a big month for Northridge Academy Key Club. This month we were presented with our official club charter! On August 6 some of the board members attended the Chatsworth Kiwanis DCM, our sponsoring Kiwanis club, to be officially presented with our charter! At the Kiwanis meeting, we sat next to some other Key Clubbers from division 25 West, Reseda and Chatsworth Key Clubs. It was really nice to see others clubs that were being sponsored by Chatsworth Kiwanis to be participating in the meeting too! Hopefully, we will attend more DCMs from our sponsoring Kiwanis club. We heard some great things from the Chatsworth Kiwanis Club president Timothy Ross about all the events their club is taking part in. After hearing all these great reports and future events of the Kiwanis, we were presented with our charter by Lieutenant Governor Lucia Montano and presented with Northridge Academy Key Club’s bell and gavel. Watch out Koalas!

Up n a le C h c a Region 7 Be Overview

Isabel Evengelista | John F. Kennedy HS On a very overcast morning, I awoke to the excitement for Region 7 Beach Clean Up at Dockweiler Beach. I was looking forward to developing closer relationships with the members and board of the club that I serve and meeting new people throughout the Region.

As the day progressed, Beach Clean-Up turned out to be more eventful than expected. As soon as I arrived at the beach, we began with various ice breakers to become acquainted with one another. Afterwards, we were given some free time to go in the water before we started grouping up to clean up the beach.

Once Beach Clean-Up began, everyone was assigned to group up with people who share a mutual birthday month. This allowed everyone in the region to have a chance to meet at least one person from each division.

After beach clean-up, we had lunch provided by food trucks then had DCM. Afterwards, there were a couple more activities to squeeze in before the day was done.

This included tug of war, making s’mores, and spirit battles.

Overall, I feel that Beach Clean-Up was a great day. I got what I expected out of it, and more. I look forward to the next time I can bond with my Region 7 ohana and see everyone again.
