Hello D25E members! As you may or may not know, I am the Director of Finance & Management for this division! To the returning members, welcome back for another exciting year of service! If you are a new member, I would personally like to get to know each & every one of you! Key Club may seem a little weird, who am I kidding, it is like REALLY weird, but I believe it wha sets us apart from all the other service clubs (in a good way). This year will be full of exciting events & opportunities to bond and make friendships with the other Key Clubbers. Things to look forward for this month: RTC & Stop Cancer Walk! I would like to personally invite each and every one of you to attend because it is an excellent way to learn about Key Club. Key Clubbers can and will seem very intimidating at first because of our SPIRIT, but as time progresses you will find that each & every person in Key Club is genuine & very friendly! I hope to see a lot of new faces in the upcoming events! D25E ROLL OUT! Michael Lee | Director of Finances and Management email: michael.lee.dfam@gmail.com

What is Key Club?

08

WHAT IS K

Key Club International is the oldest, largest, and most successful non-profit student-led organization for high school students. We teach and spread our core values through community service: caring, character-building, inclusiveness, and leadership which were adopted by our Key Club International Board in 2002. Members of Key Club, a part of the community-service based Kiwanis International Family, develop themselves into young leaders as they positively impact their schools and communities. Our organization was the inspired vision of California State Commissioner of Schools Albert C. Olney, and vocational education teacher Frank C. Vincent, who together worked to establish the first Key Club at Sacramento High School in California on May 7, 1925. Female students were first admitted into Key Club in 1976, eleven years before women were admitted to Kiwanis International, our sponsoring organization. Today, Key Club exists on almost 5,000 high school campuses, 30 different countries, primarily in the United States and Canada. It has also grown internationally to the Caribbean nations, Central and South America, and most recently to Asia and Australia. With over 12 million hours of community service a year, Key Club International is an organization comprised of multi-state districts, divisions, and individual Key Clubs on high school campuses around the world. Our organization is funded by nominal dues paid by every member, as well as generous contributions by Kiwanis International to fund service-leadership training programs. Key Club’s district & international officers are high school leaders elected by the members at district and international conventions. Our community-service organization offers a wide range of opportunities to its members, such as by supporting our International Service Partners March of Dimes (funds research to reduce premature births), UNICEF (works to overcome poverty, violence, discrimination, and disease that afflict children around the world), and Children’s Miracle Network (raises funds for more than 170 children’s hospitals).

Past Event

DCM, Membership Recruitment Leadership Conference, Movie Night by Tyler Kowta On the day of August 10th, 2013, Division 25 East Key Clubbers gathered for a fun day with all their peers at Frost Middle School. The members participated in many events including a DCM, MLRC, and a Movie Night. The DCM was hosted by Birmingham High School and focused on a back to school theme since school was coming around the corner. The members participated in fun icebreakers such as forming themselves to make school materials with their group and were judged on how well they made their school material by Granada’s Club Advisor and Kiwanis Advisor. Another creative activity the members participated in was to hold streamers together with their group to form geometrical shapes. This activity was great for bonding with other members. After our DCM, we merged inside a large classroom to hold our MLRC to inform the members and officers about how to act during the first meetings, crowd control, and how to lead a meeting. The MRLC turned out to be very informative to our new officers and members for the new school year. The presentations also focused on membership recruitment and informed the officers on how to gain more members and have promotional material. The lights then went dim and Movie Night began. Movie Night was a relaxing time where members from Division 25 East gathered together for a fun-filled night of movies, food and friends. Our members enjoyed popcorn, pizza, and drinks that were sold throughout the movie. The division sold the drinks and food to raise money to go toward division level needs. The members had a great time enjoying the movies, Wreck it Ralph and Up, together inside of the classroom after the long day of learning information about Key Club and the new school year while bonding with other Key Clubbers.

Kennedy “ For the month of September, Kennedy Key Club will make a goal to gain membership recruitment through the involvement of volunteering in-school. Just by volunteering in school with other organizations, it can create a synergy of spirit and motivation to drive high school students to think about the community and join Key Club! Another goal Kennedy Key Club is working towards is more personal involvement with the Key Club members that we serve. In order to keep member retention in the beginning, we will create inclusive events and enthusiastic club meetings that get all members of the club to be involved in a GOLDEN experience. “ -Jeymz Hipolito, Kennedy Key Club President

ONGOING FUNDRAISER Kennedy Key Club is currently selling rubber bracelets that say ‘KOALA NATION’ on them for a donation of $3! All the proceeds will go towards the Pediatric Trauma Program! Support your fellow koalas by purchasing one of these bracelets at any upcoming club, division, or region event! There’s plenty to go around!

James Monroe High School Key Club James Monroe Key Club has elected new officers! As co-vice president of Key Club, I'm very lucky to be involved with this kind of organization and even luckier to be involved with other dedicated Key Clubbers. At first, I didn’t think I was immersed into Key Club enough to be co-vice president and that is definitely something I am determined to change. Becoming more involved in outside events is not only something I but also the rest of the club I serve has to work on, and I will try by best to motivate them. Our elections were fun but still achieved what we wanted. Now Monroe Key Club has great officers and I truly believe that with them Key Club will flourish! Taking on a leadership position has already been truly worthwhile, and I can't wait to see what this year hold for Key Club!

-Bianca Quintero, Co-Vice President

Aminata Diallo, Tech Editor

Last year I joined Key Club in hopes of becoming more involved. Little did I know that Key Club would be one of the most rewarding clubs you can possibly join. I made new friends and was also able to give back to my community. I ran for the position this year because I want to be part of the club in a more interactive way. I will provide my time and energy in hopes of making this a great year! With my experience in writing newsletters and such, I'm committing myself entirely to Key Club. I'm making it my personal goal to encourage our members and keep them involved. I'm positive this year our Key Club is going to make a strong comeback! As the historian, I'm going to spread a lot of spirit among our members and make sure to capture all the fun we have!

VAN NUYS

The school year started with a HOWLLLLLL! Literally. During the orientations, we had the school mascot, Wolfie, run around and help support our club. With so many freshmen, or fresh meat, coming in, we were able to grab so many people interested in joining Key Club. Our very own president, Joyce Kim, was so excited that she ran around the school with a Key Club poster as a cape. Of course other clubs were competing against us, but we had our keys to fend them off. We are ready to rock this year!!!

Talking about the start of a new year, we already have a Perler Bead Fundraiser coming up. We will make a whole bunch of our D25E mascot, the koala, with the perler beads. And we will sell a whole bunch. AND WE WILL BE SUCCESSFUL. We have the spirit of key club in us. -‐Wayne Kuang Van Nuys Key Club

Lorraine Pacilan Koala of the Month

Lorraine has not only increasingly been attending events, but also has demonstrated an interest of becoming more active in the club in a leadership role. Although she may not have received the Historian position, she is still dedicated to Key Club. In one instance, she voluntarily asked her mother to chaperone for a club event in order for others to enjoy some time with fellow koalas. With the events we have offered in the past month, Lorraine has shown up to the majority of them, always sporting a smile on her face, eager to serve. She has attended all of the conferences. Although they might not be the typical idea of “fun, she has shown her strive to become a leader and that is very admirable. With her increased dedication, there is no doubt that Lorraine is a great candidate for Koala of the Month for September.

Recognition

James MonroE HS Club of the Month I cannot begin to express how grateful I am to serve James Monroe Key Club as the Lt. Governor and how fortunate I am to witness so much growth from the club over the term. Over the past term, James Monroe Key Club has remained a suspended club with fewer than ten members regularly attending its meetings. Seeing this, I have been worried of the progress for James Monroe Key Club during this term. Nevertheless, over the past five months, James Monroe Key Club has brought more than just constant surprises to the division. It has instilled a vibrant spirit and new inspiration for the other clubs within the division to grow in service. From almost no active members, James Monroe Key Club members is now present in numerous division wide functions. At the club meetings for the new school year, James Monroe Key Club had over 80 members attending each of its meetings. Even the Kiwanis advisors were impressed by the effort of James Monroe Key Club officers and the growth James Monroe Key Club has developed. The inspiration James Monroe Key club has brought to the division is unrivaled and the division is proud to nominate James Monroe Key Club as the Club of the Month for the month of September.

Isaac Leon Officer of the Month

Vice President Isaac Leon has truly been constantly impressing me throughout this term as an officer for Granada Hills Charter Key Club. Despite serving on the officer board for the first time, Vice President Issac has displayed such maturity and professionalism, qualities which even experienced officers have troubles achieving. Every week, I would regularly get an update from Vice President Isaac informing me the ongoing discussions within Granada Hills Charter Key Club. His messages brought me even greater motivation to assist the club he serves and linked the club he serves to the division. I would always receive paperwork submissions from him on a timely manner and his paperwork submissions would always be one of the most quality work I have seen as the Lt. Governor. During the club meetings for his home club, he displayed immense leadership potential as he correctly educated the members he served. Therefore, I nominate Vice President Issac Leon as the Koala of the Month for the month of September.

I look forward to attending all of the different RTC’s, including Region 7’s of course! Name one thing people wouldn’t normally know about you.

People don’t know that I’ve played the piano for nine years; I started in the third grade and I’ve been playing ever since.
