A quick message from your 2013 - 2014

Division News Editor Hello my wonderful Koalas! It has been quite lovely to meet many of your during this past month! From running around RTC to make sure everything ran smoothly (in terms of technology that is) and walking my final AIDS Walk this past October 13th was absolutely incredible, especially considering together we were cheered out lungs out! I definitely look forward to the rest of the term with all you new members. I look forward to seeing you all grow as members, leaders, and, most importantly, as people. Although there immense amounts of stress from school, family, college applications, I still make time for this wonderful Ohana we have constructed throughout the years. Please, if you ever see me around any kind of event, whether it is on the club, division, region, or even district level, stop me and say introduce yourself! I love meeting new people and it would be a great pleasure to cross paths. I’ll be standing with open arms, so ask for a free hug or maybe even ask me how I feel! I may pretty small but I really can scream my heart out. For now, considering you can’t just magically conjure me out of this computer screen, enjoy this month’s newsletter! I am always trying to find new ways to make this publication better and better every single month. Thank you so much for everything, Koalas! I will be seeing you all next at Fall Rally South! (:

Sto p Cancer Walk Alan O’Hara | Cleveland

Natalie Warmoth | Birmingham Community Charter

On September 22nd, Cleveland Key Club participated in the Cancer Walk of 2013. It was a great experience for all the members who joined in on the run and also those who volunteered to work at the booths. One ways we pitched in was that we organized the trash cans in various locations around the park to keep the environment clean. We also helped the workers at the booths by organizing papers, informing new participants about the sign-in sheet and park area, and cleaning up after the event. The Cancer Walk of 2013 gave new members a taste of what Key Club events are like and how involved they will be if they continually join in on the fun. It also showed the amount of participation and teamwork the officer board would be dealing with for the rest of their term. Overall, it was exciting to say that this was our biggest Key Club event of our term so far.

On September 22, at Woodley Park, we participated in the Stop Cancer Walkathon. Although, it was not as huge as the Nautica Triathlon, a lot of people came to support the Cancer Walk. We had over 10 members show up to the Walkathon and it was a joy to see them there on time. The event started and ended at 5:45AM-11:00AM. When we first arrived we received our free t-shirts and waited for our instructions. One of the leaders, Jenny then called us to wipe down the dew off the tables for booths to set up later. We all worked together and it was very dark and a little scary. It was fun and it was very hard to be up so early in the morning, so they gave us some bagels and coffee for free. After we all ate, we had to wait for further instruction and we were able to explore the park and see the booths. They had a booth for whole foods and giveaways. All our clubs got together and also did our famous “How do we feel” chant! It was so much fun. We all got closer as embers and as a division. It was awesome to see so many members work for a good cause and to support cancer patients.

events Jessie Aw | Granada Hills Charter On September 13th, 2013, Granada Hills hosted Back to School Night. At this event, our Key Club sold Chick-Fil-A and water to the parents and students. Serving as our first fundraiser of the new school year, Key Clubbers were more than excited to participate by selling and advertising. From the other side of the school, you could probably hear the chants, “Chick-Fil-A! ChickChick-Fil-A!” or “ GET YOUR CHICK-FIL-A HERE!!” The turnout was amazing and we sold out by the end of Back to School Night. Not only were sales profitable, parents and students were able to learn more about what Key Club is. For those who did not know about our club already, they asked questions and showed interest in joining our club! All in all this was a fantastic event to kick off the new school year and get members involved with Key Club!

Club Rush/btsn Agnes Jeniffer | Van Nuys To commemorate the start of the new school year, Van Nuys High school held one of its many traditions of promoting clubs on Wednesday, September 25. Several new and old clubs gathered around the quad to promote their clubs and show off their club spirit. In the midst of all of the chaos and shouting stood Key Club, all of the officers that participated roared with such excitement in order to garner attention from the passing students. Our club, also, passed out several flyers to curious students who seemed confused yet intrigued by all of our yelling and enthusiasm. Luckily, our tactic of showing our Koala spirit helped gather several students around our small both who stood in a long line to sign up for our club and ask questions about what Key Club is about. The most intense part of this event, however, was a spirit battle between us and our fellow Kiwanis! They constantly bombarded us with “How do you feel?!”

Natalie Warmoth | Birmingham Community Charter On September 21, Everybody Reads was held at Noble Elementary from 8:45AM to 11:45AM. Our job as volunteers is to read to these kids, discuss on comprehension, and to have fun with them. We try to make everything as fun as possible in order to help the kids realize that reading is a lot of fun. They get to make new friends, and get to know the volunteers. Birmingham has about nine members show up to the event and it was awesome to see them enjoy reading to the kids. Our new members are very motivated and work hard to show up to these events. All the new volunteers received quick training and reviewed for the program. As their older peers, the kids look up to us and we can greatly influence these kids lives. We basically take the group of kids into an assigned room and separate into smaller groups. It is normally one volunteer per group of kids and we follow a guide on what to do. We read a page, analyze the pictures with the kids, and then the kids write about what they learned. It is really fun to see the kids laugh and write about the meaningful messages from the story.

events Dedicated members from Granada Hills Charter High School and from Divison 25E woke up bright and early to drive to Malibu for a day full of service. With the start of the new school year, the division was able to participate in this event once again. This event was held on Saturday, September 7th and 8th and started at 4:30 AM at Zuma Beach. The 27th annual Malibu Beach Triathlon has participants swimming 1⠄2 a mile, biking 18 miles, and running 4 miles to the finish line. This event lets athletes, celebrities, philanthropists, and spectators come together on September 7th and 8th to witness and participate in a great event that raises funds for the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles’ Pediatric Cancer Research Program. Our volunteers were given different jobs from the start of the morning. The members helped mark bib numbers on participants, hand out water, organize race times, hand out medals, and etc. Our

members gained experience on character building and responsibility. As the day progressed they helped each other in small groups and took on many different responsibilities that they were assigned. While passing out drinks to the many participants, they used inclusiveness by using all the members to find a system to where they could quickly and efficiently pass water on both sides of where they athletes were running. This event was truly exciting for both the members and the participants. Although the athletes looked tired, they had thanked us after their long race for our volunteer work. The members had a great time participating in the numerous service opportunities at the event that day. The enthusiastic members enjoyed their time helping and gaining memorable experiences and experience for the coming years. Although the day was long for the members, it was all worth it in the end. C L U B RECAPS

Club Recaps are created by each individual club giving each club an opportunity to reflect, make goals, and advertise to the entire division!

Cleveland Key Club “My last Region Training Conference was excellent. As an old member, it was great to see new and old faces in Key Club. The agenda was filled with plenty of workshops based upon our interests. Even though I am an old member, I still learned a few things here and there and I am sure that the new members did as well. I am 100% sure that most of them got intimidated by the cheers. Everything simmered down after lunch and the rest of RTC was tiresome.”-Elbert Lim Secretary.

On Thursday, October 3, Cleveland Key Club sold Chow Mein and Fried Rice at Cleveland’s back to school night. May Koala’s came to volunteer and all the food was sold. A small profit was earned from this event and friendships were made stronger!

Kennedy Club Event: Kennedy Key Club volunteered at the 11th annual Tierra Del Sol Fall Festival on October 19th, 2013 from 9:00 AM – 3:30 PM. We helped with setting up the event, game booths, the pumpkin patch, and face painting.

Club Goals: “This month, I’d really love to see a lot more spirit and events within my club and the members I serve. Hopefully by the end of this month, I’ll also be able to have a website up for our club and various social media accounts so that we don’t always have to rely on using FaceBook and have more things accessible to members.” -Isabel Evangelista, Historian/Temporary Tech Editor

James Monroe High School Key Club Goals:

Upcoming Events:

- Member Retention

-AIDS Walk

-More Service Events

-Everybody Reads

-More Fundraisers

-Kiwanis Clothes Drive

-More Spirit from Monroe Key Clubbers!

-Division 25 East Clothes Drive

“Region Training Conference was very helpful because it really helped me understand my job a lot better. Not only did I learn about my position as tech chair, but I also learned a bunch of things about Key Club that I would not have known otherwise if I hadn't attended to RTC. There so many components of being tech chair that were discussed, that have made me realize all I can do as tech chair. I experienced all of the spirit that comes from Key Club, and it definitely motivated me to do my best for the club I serve. -Amy Diallo, Tech Chair

Re g i o n Training Conference Re-C Isabel Evangelista | Kennedy Key Club On Saturday, September 28th, 2013, Region 7 was reunited once again at John Burroughs High School in Burbank, CA for our training conference. As I arrived, my mind was filled with anxious thoughts as I was looking forward to meeting many new Key Clubbers. Before the welcome session began, former Tech Editor, Aaron Aguas, and I began to take pictures of random Key Clubbers with the ‘got success?’ poster as a way to easily get associated with one another. As the welcome session began, we had many guest appearances which included Division 25 East’s first LTG, Missy Dominguez and District Treasurer Johansen Pico. At the second half of the session, we had a guest motivational speaker. Afterwards, we were dismissed to our workshop sessions which lasted from 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM. I learned about future positions I plan on running for, and learned a little bit more about my current position as a club historian. I definitely enjoyed being given further insight on how to properly do my job. As lunch began, we were given Costco pizza, which is my favorite kind of pizza. The moment that people finished eating, that’s when the cheering began. It started with the ‘I Feel Good’ cheers from numerous

{ Birmingham

people and then escalated into full blown spirit battles against divisions. It was very fun, and very surprising that within an hour I was able to lose part of my voice. When general session began, we spoke about Fall Rally South, DCON, and were raffled off many items. As general session came to a close, the division in Region 7 went to their designated areas to begin their DCM. In Division 25 East’s DCM, we were lucky to have District Treasurer Johansen Pico as our special guest. We also had a very interesting activity, which incorporated the use of the four elements and groups from Avatar: The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra. This was used to describe the types of leaders our division has and how though we can be diverse, when we come together, we’re strong and become the “Koavatar”. After DCM was the Otter Pop social, where we were allowed to purchase merchandise from other divisions. I was able to buy my division’s bee-utiful shirt, some pins from Division 3 north, and bracelets from Division 16. Region 7 training conference was personally an extremely great experience for me. It caused me to become more excited for many upcoming region and district events such as AIDS WALK and Fall Rally South. I can’t wait to be with my Region 7 Ohana once again.

Cleveland Key Club has accomplished so much despite the influx of membership recruitment, PTP fundraising, and Fall Rally preparation. The qualifications Cleveland Key Club has shown is inspirational to all the clubs within the division. Its officers work collaboratively and effectively in updating the members on new service projects, communicating with the club Kiwanis and faculty advisors, and enhancing the quality of the club they serve. Its Kiwanis advisor Irene and Bob are so supportive of the club and their work is beyond impressive. Simply over the past month, its members have performed nearly 75 hours. The spirit and leadership exuded by the members continue to serve as a source of inspiration to aspire growth within this division. For these reasons, I am proud to present Cleveland Key Club as the club of the month for the month of October.
