2 - FROM THE...

Hey There!

Aloha!

Our last week of school has fallen upon us! The long days, and stressful nights are finally at an end. I hope you’ve ended this year strong! This may be the ending of a school year but, the beginning of a new Key Club year. Whether you’re an officer, member, or an advisor, dont forget to continue to be an active member of Key Club International. For club officers, ensure that you remain and maintain being proactive for the coming school year. Summer doesn’t need to be the end, nor will it be. This is the best time to reach out to your community, plan for the coming school year and see how you can leave a lasting legacy within your school and community! For members, remember to stay active throughout the summer, as you are still members! Whether it’s attending service events, division events, or studying for the act/sat there’s always room to improve as an individual/leader. Feel free to reach out to me at anytime or the Division leadership Team we are here to serve you all and we’re excited to see what this new term will bring us! Don’t forget to Join the division reflector and follow D28E on all social media platforms and I hope to see you all at the upcoming June Joint DCM this summer!

Lieutenant Governor Estefany Merino

How are you feeling pandas? Cliche, I know, however, as the school year just ending, and summer taking over, we can all finally unwind, and “live it up” a little! Now, as it may be summer time and most of us check out for the summer, service never sleeps! We are Key Clubbers, which mean even through the summer, we should all aim to continue to serve our homes, schools, and communities, as a way to unwind from a stressful year. As this is the very first issue I will be producing, I want to shed light and encourage planning, goal setting, and aiming high for the term ahead. Though, just as implore each of you to do so, I will also be doing the same. I hope to provide monthly newsletters that are graphicly advanced, and provide knowledge and insight about our division, and the world of Key Club. Furthering, I cannot wait to bring a much needed update to the functionailty of our divsion, and I cannot wait to see what we accomplish this term. I hope to serve as a resource, a team member, and a shoulder to cry on to each of you, and I encourage you all to ask me anything, and introduce yourselves if you ever see me! Lets make some memories this year Division 28 East!

Anyways, to say I am not excited for this year, is a lie, as you can tell by my repetition of this statement in this section alone, but its true. 8 - MEET THE DLT

Division Tech & Media Editor Khadija Rashidally

Hi Pandas!

I am a Senior at Valley High School currently in the International Baccalaureate program. I have been in Key Club for three years and they have been some of the best years in my life as getting to be a part of such a huge and welcoming family who share similar passions and values. I’m honored to be serving as the 2018-2019 Technology & Media Editor for Division 28 East and look forward to be working closer with the other clubs in division as well as with the division leadership team. I want to further help maintain and improve the division to serve the members and individual clubs. I aim to use updates and use social media more often to inform members, gather photos

and videos from individual clubs to showcase their work, gather input/comments at the club and member level via social media, create public calendars/FAQ sections, and overall bring our division closer together. I want to create a tight knit family and give members the community, moments I had the privilege of experiencing which truly made me fall in love with the organization. I strive to inspire members to also become leaders and advocate not only in Key Club but in their communities as well. I know I might be a bit ambitious but I have the passion & determination and I believe in this division as well as its ability to do incredible things this term. I want to put all my effort into making this year enjoyable as well as an amazing experience and I look forward to seeing what we can accomplish this year!

Division Fundraising Chair Lizeth Garcia

Whats up Pandas!

My name is Lizeth Garcia, the first thing everyone says about me is that they find me very funny and loud. Everyone knows that I’m a chill person who doesn’t like to have/cause problems with anyone, I’m very open minded and like to hear/understand everyone’s opinions on anything. I will always help anyone who needs my help with hesitation because that’s how I am. I will be serving as division fundraising chair for the 18-19 school year. I hope to raise way more money than we did last year for FRS because we only raised 2,000 dollars

which is a very low number in my mind and I know with our new division board we can accomplish a number higher than we achieved last year for FRS. I like to go out and walk anywhere because it helps me be productive and I love going to jiu jitsu because it helps me release my stress and anger at times when I’m having a hard time. I’m very excited to see the cheers the clubs have planned for RTC this upcoming year and to see if we can raise way more money than we did last year for FRS for the upcoming year.

MEET THE DLT - 9

Division Service Chair Hector Ballez

Hey Pandas!

I am currently serving as your 2018-2019 Division Service Chair and am a Senior at Green Valley High School. I am a dancer for both The Dance Zone as well as Green Valley and that is my largest passion in life that i hope to continue as a career. I would love to further our division by uniting us all in service and going above and beyond as members this year to meet at least 50 service hours each. I want to inspire members to become more active and reach for high achievements in Key Club whether it be a club, division, or district level such as those before have inspired me. I

Hello Pandas!

want to remind people why we all joined this amazing family in the first place, and that is to serve our community and make a difference in the world for the better, and show the world how caring is our way of life.

My name is Alessandra Quintanilla, I am an incoming Senior at Valley High School currently enrolled in the IB program, and I will be serving as the spirit chair for the division 28 east pandasm and i’m a LIBRA. As the spirit coordinator I will be in charge of the FRS and RTC, my goal is to see the 28 east pandas flourish and grow throughout the 2018/2019 term. Regarding my position, I am strongly motivated to pitch in new ideas for fundraising and rise money for PTP. I plan to work with my team to start new scholarships for members throughout the division, so they could experience the

Division Spirit Chair

Alessandra Quintanilla full enjoyment of key club (frs, dcon, icon etc.) I’m am extremely excited for FRS for I have cheer ideas already luring my head.

10 - PEDIATRIC TRAUMA PREVENTION

PEDIATRIC TRAUMA PREVENTION WHAT IS IT?

The Pediatric Trauma Prevention Program is one of the FOUR preferred Charities of the CNH District! Being one of the largest organizations that we as a CNH District Contribute to, we have a strong bond, and large goals to achieve each year for this program. The last term alone we were able to achieve a record breaking $220,000 raised for PTP. This program aims to provide the necessary tools and training to ensure that children everywhere are able to experience the things that normal kids should be able to, without the fear of forgetting it all, or losing the ability to do so due to other outling circumstances. This can include providing bike helmets, or covering care for children in hospitals, who are suffering from the effects of trauma. This Program was established in 1994 with the understanding that the resources that are out there for children, was not enough, and the CNH Kiwanis Foundation wanted to ensure that stopped. Today, the CNH Kiwanis Foundation is able to support Partner hospitals around California, Nevada, and Hawaii. The CNH Key Club District is also able to support an entire hospital on its own. We as Key Clubbers, are able to achieve so much, and the pediatrict trauma prevention program is evidence of that.

STATISTICS

1. Each year, 9,000 U.S. families lose a child because of a preventable injury 2. It is estimated as many as 90% of unintentional injuries can be prevented 3. Among children ages 14 and under, it is estimated 40% of deaths and 50% of nonfatal unintentional injuries occur in and around the home 4. The majority of childhood injuries occur between May and August 5. Children ages 4 and under are at greater risk of unintentional injury-related death and disability and account for 45% of the deaths among children ages 14 and under 6. Each year, injuries to children ages 14 and under result in 234,000 hospitalizations, nearly 8.4 million emergency room visits and nearly 11.7 million visits to physicians’ offices 7. Every day, more than 39,000 children are injured seriously enough to require medical treatment, totaling more than 14 million children each year

PEDIATRIC TRAUMA PREVENTION - 11

PEDIATRIC TRAUMA PREVENTION HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Key Clubbers from all over have been contributing to the fight against Pedaitrict Trauma, and it only continues through each term. Every year we all work together to raise money, volunteer at partner hospitals, as well as preform various other service projects, that help the children everywhere make their experince even better than having to live in a boring, stale, and sanitary building such as hospitals. Here are some of the many ways you can contribute to the pediatrict trauama prevention program: // Fundraise // Attend Fall Rally // Donate Bicycle Helmets // Trauama Awareness Campaign // Raise Money to Provide Grants // Partner With Kiwanis // Hold Dances to Raise Money // Sponser a Bicycle Rodeo // Campaign for Safe Driving // Host workshops about Safety // Educate Adults about Safety // Participate in PTP Week! There are so many different ways you can get involved, and these are only a taste of all that you are able to do, so be sure to reach out with your sponsering Kiwanis Club, and interact, fundraise, and make memories about all the amazing possibilities and lives you would be able to save with PTP! 5K RACE FOR HOPE AND FUN WALK Coronado | Justin Truong At the 5k run, we held up signs with inspiring messages that motivated people to continue on. It was exciting getting to cheer on the runners with the other Key Clubbers along with giving high fives to everyone that ran by. My favorite part about the event was seeing how happy and motivated everyone was after they heard our signature cheers and chants towards them. I definitely recommend going to the 5k run in the future or any marathon run in general because seeing the amount of people uniting to fight a cause is a truly great incentive to join the fight.

ROBERT TAYLOR GARDEN B U I L D SECTA Scarlette Levezzo I’m a very outgoing person when it comes to being outside and I’m not scared to get my hands dirty. So, when I saw the opportunity to volunteer to help build a garden at an elementary school, I knew I had to sign up right away. The whole progress of learning and being to garden was really fun. It was also nice that if I did need help my friends and the farmers were eager to help me. If I could get another chance to be able to do another garden build event like this I absolutely would.

R O Y A L T E A FESTIVAL Valley Pauline Arfapo Royal Tea was a very fun experience for me. It was in the Mandarin Oriental and it was really nice inside. During the event, I got to meet different people from different schools and clubs that were also volunteering the event. When the event started, I didn’t expect there to be a lot of kids but it was still a great experience. In the end, there turned out to be much more kids than I thought there’d be. In the station I was at, kids created swords and wands that they wanted. I’m not usually good with kids, but I think this taught me some skills to handle them. All in all, this service event was a first and I would definitely do it again because it’s also for a good cause.

Y E A R E N D BANQUET

SECTA Charlie Garcia Our End-of-the-year Banquet definitely held a lot of memories I won’t forget for a long time. Lots of tears were shed, both of sadness and joy. There was so much food from the potluck we did that we didn’t finish any of it, but it was still delicious nonetheless. We made everyone feel included at the banquet, with the awards we given out and the giveaway done. Nearly everyone gave a speech during the awards ceremony, and there was so much emotion in the room at once. The banquet was truly and unforgettable experience.

This June-Joint DCM was anything but uneventful! I had such a joyous time spending it with my peers and ohana all across the region! From helping set up the station where we held our Pie-in-the-Face fundraiser for PTP, to assisting Lt. Governor Estefany Merino provide information about upcoming events and other items regarding our division, and most of all, participating in our PTP fundraiser truly fed the fuel for what it means to serve! An overall of $125 was raised for a preferred charity just by one exciting activity and that sincerely fills my heart with overwhelming glee. When us Key Clubbers hear the words “preferred charities” we instantly think of Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP), UNICEF, March of Dimes, and Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMNH), but do we really know what and why we are fundraising for these specific charities? Why do we prefer these over hundreds of thousands of others? Presenters from Division 28 east and Division 28 south gave members a better insight as to why we prefer these charities and what these charities stand for. Just like us, these organizations want to aid the community by doing what they can and with our help, knowledge, and determination, we can help them save another life. I am glad that I had attended this Division Council Meeting because not only was I excited to participate in the fundraiser, but I was also given a chance to see what the other three divisions were up to keep updated on what other clubs continue to do even within the summer months! I am truly grateful of this given opportunity and I look forward to attending more meetings like this with new faces!
