Happy August, Llamas! Can you believe school is here already? As you’re getting back into the swing of things, make sure to remember to hydrate, sleep, and focus on the appropriate things. Make sure your time management skills are in check as well. I hope you all enjoyed the July DCM, and are looking forward to Region Training Conference and Fall Rally North! We will have multiple spirit training sessions this term, meaning I want every single Llama going to FRN to be 100% prepared! Look out for upcoming spirit sessions in the future. As we’re starting Club Rush season, the most important thing for you to be doing is to be reaching out to anyone and everyone! If you have a shy friend, a friend who doesn’t seem like they’d like Key Club, just bring them to a general meeting, a DCM, a service event! You never know, and Key Club is such a life changing experience that everyone deserves to enjoy. Think about how you first joined Key Club, and try and make that exact same experience available to a timid freshman out there. Thank you for reading this edition of the Llama Legends! See you all next month. With a Spark for Service, Vivian Luong Division 2 South Lieutenant Governor 2018-19 ISSUE 1.3 | PAGE 04
Hello Llamas! Can you believe summer is already half-way over? Time is flying, and soon we'll all be back in school... unfortunately. I hope you have all been spending your time wisely, and if you haven't, it's not too late! There's still plenty of time to finish your summer HW and, of course, have a lot of fun. This issue of the "Llama Legends" is camping themed! I have always loved going outdoors during the summertime and felt enraptured by stargazing, so I decided to mix a bit of these elements together to create this newsletter. I truly enjoyed meeting some new people at the July DCM this past month, and I hope to get to know more of you in our upcoming events! Remember, always feel free to approach me if you see me around, and you can contact me about anything (like math and CALCULUS homework!!). If you have any feedback for me, please let me know, as I want my newsletters to improve with each month :) Sincerely, Vy Truong Division 2 South News Editor 2018-2019 ISSUE 1.3 | PAGE 05

club report June has been somewhat slow in terms of active members but we still have service events for them to do! We helped at the Bay Area Girl’s Rock Camp and set up things and instruments for the camp. We also went to Med Share where we sorted medical supplies. As always, we had our monthly Pick It Up in Oakland Chinatown and cleaned the streets. We also participated in the June DWS and helped with Habitat Restoration by weeding plants while enjoying ourselves by munching on some snacks! Speaking of plants, we also helped maintain the Historic Cohen Bray House in the gardens. We also attended the Island Jam and set up table and chairs as well as hang up posters from sponsors. Division 2 North and South has a joint DWS where we made dog toys for dogs in need! To end off the month, Castro Valley held a DCM and our very own Treasurer, Christy Wong, participated in the pie throwing fun!

cherry festival On June 2, Arroyo Key Club members had the pleasure of volunteering at the Cherry Festival in downtown San Leandro. This festival is a long-standing traditional celebration in San Leandro. A parade started at 10 A.M., and event later started at 11 A.M. and ended at 6 P.M. Volunteers from Arroyo met fellow Key Clubbers from from San Leandro. At first, volunteers were hesitant in interacting with one another, but as we familiarize ourselves with each other, we had hanging out and volunteering together at the booth. We passed out flyers at the Kiwanis booth and helped children with fingerprint ID kits. The activity involved ink pads, which were susceptible to messiness when used by young children without help by an ancient person like us. After kids applied ink to their fingers to stamp the ID kit, we helped them wash their hands with soap and water. Originally, the amount of families that wanted to create an ID kit was few because they thought we are going to sell their kids’ information, but once they realized the importance of having one on hand to locate their brats in case they were sold to human trafficking, and after we explained that it is for their own safekeeping, they were more happily agreed and inclined to create one. The ID kits will be very useful as an identifier to help officials identify children in case of emergency. Unfortunately, our booth was so popular that we ran out of kits unexpectedly early, which concluded our enjoyable day spent volunteering at the San Leandro Cherry Festival, even it was in a hot summer day. shadow cliffs park triathlon Volunteers from Castro Valley Key Club and Red Cross came together after the sun had barely risen to help out triathlon runners. It was surprising to see so many participants of different ages already there before 6:30 am, ready to earn their medals. Volunteers were given bright orange shirts, and assigned to give food or shirts. The first few hours were slow as we prepared food and organized the shirts in different sizes for the runners. There were a variety of fruits, muffins, and breakfast burritos that we could serve. But as runners started coming in after they finished, the lines got longer and working became more hectic. We were glad that we at least had shade in the heat! The organizers of this event were kind to give us cold water and free sandwiches throughout the day. Many people were grateful and gave a warm “thank you that made me feel happy for volunteering. The hours felt long but it was a wonderful experience being able to serve a small part of our community and seeing happy faces.

meals on wheels This month our members spent one Sunday morning delivering meals for Alameda Meals on Wheels. Meals on Wheels is a daily service that provides meals to people who sign up. Once the meals are prepared by the staff, volunteers will receive a route to deliver meals on. Once the volunteer reaches a stop on the route, they deliver a cold and hot meal. However, they don’t just deliver food, they also deliver a conversation to lonely senior citizens.
